I report results of over 850 microprobe analyses of sulfides, sulfosalts and electrum from the Favona adularia-sericite epithermal deposit of the Waihi district in the southern Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand. Pyrite and marcasite from altered wall rocks that enclose the veins are stoichiometric, with compositions of FeS2, and no significant trace elements. In contrast, pyrite in veins commonly contains appreciable As (up to 3.2 wt per cent), and locally contains several tenths of a percent of Cu, Zn, Co, Ag and Sb. Vein pyrite may contain up to 0.22 per cent Au, but Au contents do not show a positive correlation with As. Limited electrum data indicate that it ranges from Ag0.47 Au0.53 to Ag0.54Au0.41Cu0.01Zn0.04. Chalcopyrite is stoichiometric CuFeS2, and most galena is PbS, but some galena contains up to 4.4 wt per cent Se, which substitutes for S in its lattice. The galena is not argentiferous; the highest Ag content is 0.45 wt per cent Ag. Sphalerite averages 4 mol per cent FeS, but ranges up to 15 mol per cent. Tetrahedrites [(Cu,Ag)10(Zn,Fe)2(As,Sb)4S13] show variable substitution, but most are Cu- Zn- and Sb-rich. Veins also contain aguilarite (Ag4SeS), stromeyerite (CuAgS), naumannite (Ag2Se), and mckinstryite [(Ag,Cu)2S].

The southwest Pacific has produced at least four of the world’s premier porphyry copper-gold deposits, and the current level of exploration is likely to produce even more. An appreciable amount of gold is being produced with this copper, with obvious economic advantages. Gold content, in addition to their large size, makes the southwest Pacific’s porphyrycopper-gold deposits very attractive exploration targets. The recognition of telescoping and overprinting of porphyry systems has produced a greater awareness of the likely surface expressions, in particular the significance of advanced argillic lithocaps in porphyry exploration. The recognition of the spatial and genetic association of porphyry copper and epithermal gold systems (Sillitoe, 1972), as in other parts of the world, has had important implications for exploration in the Asia Pacific region.

It should be stating the æbleeding obviousÆ to say that the most efficient method of recovery must be used during the testing and evaluation phases of an orebody. Furthermore, the company will be literally throwing away money by not using the most efficient recovery plant during mining. This is especially true in the case of a low concentration/high value commodity such as diamonds. Unfortunately, this economic recovery criterion is not always the driving force. Some inexperienced companies think that they can preserve capital by using cheaper, and generally less efficient, recovery plants to mine their product. This philosophy is invariably a fallacy. Furthermore, it is also important to use the correct sized plant for the proposed task. It is no use trying to use a small testing plant to treat large quantities of ore, as this may result in loss of recovery efficiency. The converse is equally true.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. The 115-year history of the Hall-Heroult process for production of aluminium has been characterised by a sustained technology-driven improvement in costs and productivity. In the past decade the industry has effectively transferred best practice into older technology with improvements through computer control of the process, and redesign of cell linings using computer modelling . Incremental development is now at the point where diminishing returns will apply for further technical improvement effort however, until the gap between technical limits and current best practice is addressed through major process redesign. The process remains a long way short of its technical limits in energy consumption, carbon anode consumption, cell life and product purity. Investment cost in new capacity is very high, supporting the retention of older and less efficient technology and hence limiting the application of best practice in environmental performance and occupational health exposure. The industry is a major emitter of greenhouse gases yet the process has the potential to release oxygen as the primary waste. All of the above issues will be addressed in the new century, but only through commitment to the necessary long-term research and development that is required to achieve a redesign of the process.

To improve the ventilation of large-opening under-ground stone mines by using stoppings made from stone left in place. Background Underground stone mines typically use large room-and-pillar openings with little ventilation control. Stone miners may be exposed to contaminants that include silica dust, diesel particulate matter (DPM), exhaust gases, nuisance dust, and face shot (blasting) fume gases. The health risks from breathing these fine particles and toxic organic materials are well documented. Although contaminants such as dust or diesel exhaust can be some-what controlled at the source, the escaping contaminants are often diluted and removed from work areas using ventilation with minimal controls. In many cases, current mine ventilation practices use trial-and-error techniques to improve ventilation. The growing realization of the importance of a healthy work environment along with increased regulations will require many stone mines to implement new ways to improve ventilation. In-place stone stoppings are one option. Mine air flows from one point to another because of a pressure differential between those points. This pressure differential is established using a mechanical fan in conjunction with separations (stoppings) between high-pressure (intake) and low-pressure (return) airways. The separation of intakes and returns is an important concept that is used in most other types of mines. Normally, air moves through underground stone mines with minimal control technology. Fans are placed in locations where they are thought to be most beneficial, and intakes are not separated from returns. In a few smaller underground stone mines, proper ventilation can be achieved with a few strategically placed fans. However, as these mines increase in size, moving adequate quantities of air through-out the mine becomes harder, and separation of intakes and returns becomes a problem. Building traditional mine stoppings to separate the intake and return airways in entries with a cross-section area often exceeding 800 ft2 is difficult. The stoppings must be able to withstand both the dynamic pressure from face shots and the static pressures created by the fans. Construction and maintenance difficulties, as well as high costs, are the main factors preventing these traditional mine stoppings from gaining wide acceptance by the stone mining industry.

An instrumented spherical vessel has been used for many years to study laminar combustion waves. Concurrent measurements of flame speed and pressure-rise rates have led to evaluations of burning velocities, the pressure dependence of the burning velocity, and the expansion ratios of the gases passing through the combustion wave. For the most part, these studies have involved flames initially at atmospheric or subatmospheric pressure. The old spherical vessel used by the Bureau of Mines was not designed for use at elevated pressures. Moreover, being made of wrought iron, it was susceptible enough to corrosion to prohibit its use with many combustible mixtures that figure in industrial research. In mid-1956, under sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, the Bureau undertook the development of a stainless steel spherical vessel capable of withstanding explosions of gaseous mixtures at initial pressures as high as 20 atm. and initial temperatures as high as 250° C. The design called for a double array (cross) of closely spaced small windows for observation of the flame as it traversed the vessel and a piezoelectric transducer to measure concurrently pressure-rise rates. Because no commercial contractor was willing to bid on the construction of such a vessel, it was built at the Bureau's Bruceton machine shop.7

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

This paper is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and operation practices. It describes the open-pit mining method and operations of the Kaiser Steel Corp. Eagle Mountain iron-ore mine, which is in the extreme southeastern part of California 175 miles east of Los Angeles in Riverside County. Nearest town to the mine is Indio, which is 60 miles away by an excellent highway (fig. 1). Elevations at the deposit vary from 1,400 to 3,000 feet. Figure 2 is a plan map of the Eagle Mountain iron mine. Kaiser Steel Corp. built a model camp at the mine, with all modern conveniences (fig. 3). The camp, comprising 145 homes, dormitories, mess hall, commissary, post office, and recreational facilities for 600 people, is at 1,390-foot elevation. The area has winter-resort weather between October and May, with occasional drops of temperature to 25° at night. From June to September temperatures sometimes rise to 1200 during the day. Rainfall is scant, approximately 2 inches a year, the majority of which comes as cloudbursts during the summer months.

"The VALMIN Code was developed and formally adopted by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) in 1995 and a revision was issued in 1998. The VALMIN Code applies to all relevant reports under the Australian Corporations Law, including submissions to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).The VALMIN Code and Guidelines sets standards for the preparation and commissioning of independent assessment and/or valuation reports on mineral and petroleum assets or mineral and petroleum securities.It is mandatory for AusllvI:M's members to follow this Code in these relevant circumstances and failure to do so will result in serious sanction of the member by the Ausllvllvfs Ethics Committee. Public support for the use of this Code has been given by regulators (ASX/ASIC) and market participants ( eg major accountancy firms). It is also endorsed as a guide to general best practice in project assessment and valuation.This paper will discuss how the VALMIN Code has worked in practice over the past few years. It will also examine areas where the Code could be improved and how it could form the basis of a new Canadian Code for mineral property valuation."

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 310 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 16 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1978 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis appara¬tus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862/ and 576.3/ The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Twenty previous publications have presented the results of 11,573 gas analyses made prior to 197R. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Immobile-element lithogeochemistry is providing a detailed chemostratigraphy of the submarine Ordo-Silurian volcano-sedimentary sequence. Primary lithologies and magmatic affinities of the sericitised and silicified volcanics are determined from binary plots of Nb, Zr, Y, TiO2 and Al2O3, while mass-change calculations using immobile-element anchors can identify and quantify zones of significant hydrothermal alteration. Stratiform polymetallic mineralisation at the western margin of Parys Mountain, around the Penymynydd fault zone, has been shown to have a distinct hanging-wall and footwall stratigraphy. These ore zones are probably part of a homoclinal, north-younging volcano-sedimentary sequence. The apparent stratigraphic complexity results from primary lithofacies variations and pervasive alteration, with the modifying role of the Caledonian orogeny much less than previously suggested

Recently, the great amount of funds has been invested in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and house of subsidence area of coal mine and mine reclamation. This is a benevolent and popular work, which is highly praised. However, because of complicated collapse area problems in China, especially the less integrated control research in the collapse area of metal mine, and the technological weakness, how to effectively control the subsidence area, restore landscape and ecological environment, and utilize the abandoned mine land, are major issue related to the mining area of sustainable development. The research situation about the formation of metal mine collapse area at home and abroad is reviewed, and then the effect of the collapse area on the mine safety and ecological environment, the existing technical problems and development direction are analyzed. Lastly, the technical measures of the collapse area control and cooperative underground mining is put forward.

The details of a three-phase study (total time period of 12 months) entitled ?Fire Alert Systems for Metal and Non-Metal Mines,? are presented. Phase 1 consists of a state of the art survey on fire detection devices and gas sensing techniques. Phases 2 and 3 include laboratory screening and systems concepts testing on various detectors classified as products of combustion, optical view-field and contact (or thermal) types under incipient and flaming combustion conditions. Recommendations for a mine fire detection system to protect shaft, sealed off or mined out (from spontaneous combustion of sulfide containing ores and cellulosic materials), and fuel storage areas are also included. me principal problem area noted during Phase 1 study is the high expected occurrence of false alarming of products of combustion detectors (POC") subjected to normal mining operations---diesel vehicles and equipment and shot firing or blasting operations. Simultaneous gas sensing of either the ratio of CO/NOx or CO2/NOx with detection of one or more fire signatures (smoke, radiant energy, or heat sensing) is the recommended approach to discriminate against these operations.
