The Bureau of Mines has extended its previous development of cast Mn-Cu damping alloys to powder metallurgy (P/M) consolidation of alloys containing 55 to 75 wt-pct Mn. Blends of minus 200-mesh elemental powders were compacted cold in directional and isostatic presses. With 1 pct binder, typical green densities ranged between 76 and 80 pct of theoretical when pressing at 30 or 48 tsi. Green strength increased with compacting pressure and copper content. As-sintered tensile strengths ranged to 60,000 psi fox a hydrogen, sintered 60Mn-40Cu alloy, along with 5-pct elongation. Sintered densities ranged between 90 and 96 pct of theoretical. Sintering (a as effective when holding for 1 hr at maximum temperatures of 900° to 1,040` C, dependent on composition. Strength and ductility were considerably lower than for equiva¬lent cast alloys. When aged to the damping condition, alloys containing 60 to 70 pct Mn exhibited >40 pct specific damping capacity (SDC) at 5,000-psi stress, considerably higher than values reported for equivalent cast material. Effects of 1 or 3 pct Sn or Zn additions on SDC and other properties were assessed. Trials were conducted on consolidating rings and gears of the 65Mn-35Cu alloy on industrial-type P/M equipment.

Michigan is becomining one off the important oil-producing States of the country, The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 1935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the tame amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 12 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue of about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. Bioleaching of nickel laterite ores is the extraction technology based on the use of heterotrophic micro-organisms and their organic acid products to dissolve metals from oxide minerals. This study examined the chemical leaching kinetics of limonite and nontronite ores with metabolites including citric, lactic and malic acids. The leaching process was found to follow the chemically controlled model. The leaching kinetics was found to be significantly influenced by the acid strength or dissociation of acids in solution. Although increasing the acid strength increased the rates of leaching, this trend was not indefinite. An optimal acid concentration that defined the fastest leaching rates was identified for each acid. The amenabilities of the minerals hosting the nickel and cobalt in limonite and nontronite to organic acid leaching were also established.

Vertically stirred media mills are a highly effective low-footprint solution for the ultrafine grinding of industrial minerals. This work investigates the effect of media density on flow patterns within the mill. Direct irradiation of a media particle leads to decay through positron emission, consequently forming two anti-parallel gamma rays, which allow for the real time tracking of particle position. Grinding media of the same size, but with a range of specific gravities are followed using this method, and the effect on the flow within the mill is revealed. The technique is seen to be an effective method to highlight the velocity profiles within the mill, as well as the zones where grinding is less efficient ? areas of relatively low velocity and high residence time. The changing media is seen to effect the overall flow patterns within the mill, having consequential effects on the efficiency of the grind.

This contribution focuses on the role of stress analysis for mine planning and the selection of suitable computer programs for the task with special emphasis on coal mine pillars. In this regard, barrier pillars that defend a set of five main entries at the Crandall Canyon coal mine in central Utah were formed during extensive longwall mining north and south of these main entries. Numerical analysis for ground control guided the mine planning and permitting. Retreat mining of pillars led to disastrous events August 6 and 16, 2007, with the loss of nine lives. A most difficult lesson taught by the Crandall Canyon tragedy is the need for education in the selection and use of computer programs for pillar design. Much of this contribution is taken from a report prepared for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (Gates, et al, 2008). Details appear in Appendix Q of the report (Pariseau, 2008). The Crandall Canyon mine is about 16 miles west of Huntington, Utah, in the Wasatch Plateau coal field. Geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972) as gently dipping Cretaceous sandstones, mudstones, coal seams, and shales. Joint systems are present in strata above and below coal seams where cleat systems are present as described by Hucka (1991). Several major fault systems transect the field and form grabens with 450- 760 m of drop. One such structure is Joes Valley fault that crosses the Crandall Canyon mine. Mines in the Wasatch Plateau are generally developed from outcrops in steep canyon walls. Overburden increases rapidly as mining progresses into the plateau; mining depth varies with topography between 450 and 600 m in the region of interest. A stratigraphic column derived from a borehole into the mine is shown in Figure 1. There are 11 layers in the column.

The bending strength and flexural stiffness of a micropile at its threaded connection is less than its intact strength and may fail due to thread slippage or by fracture through the pin (reduced cross-sectional area of male threads in the threaded zone of the casing). The mode of failure depends on the reduction in cross-section necessary for machining the threads, and details of the threaded connection such as the length of threaded connection, size and shape of threads, and the thread density (threads per inch). Based on data from bending tests conducted on 9-5/8 inch diameter micropile casing, a method has been developed to predict the ultimate moment capacity and initial bending stiffness of round threaded micropile connections. Two modes of failure were observed from four-point bending tests conducted at the University of Illinois on 9-5/8 inch casing with round threads. Threaded micropile casing connections with an effective thread length of 1.35 inches typically failed by slippage at the threads (jump out), while connections using an effective thread length of 1.89 inches failed by fracture of the pin. These two failure modes were described by W.O. Clinedinst in his report to the American Petroleum Institute on tension tests of threaded pipe casing. Clinedinst developed an empirical formula to determine the tensile strength of threaded connections. A method to predict moment capacity for threaded micropile connections by modeling the micropile cross-section and applying Clinedinst?s equation to determine the max tensile stress along the threaded connection while satisfying force equilibrium is proposed. The predicted moment capacity for threaded connections using this approach is within ten percent of measured for both modes of failure observed from the bending tests.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. An integration of S isotopic, fluid and mineralogical data for granitoid-related mineralisation showed that the porphyry systems had a predominantly subcrustal magma source, but the inner magma pulse of two-mica granite in the Fleet pluton was derived mainly from reduced sediments. The porphyry-style mineralisation formed from boiling fluids at high crustal levels, with a moderately saline fluid percolating down to the upper veins as they cooled but not penetrating the deeper Talnotry deposit. Veins in peripheral greywackes have a significant magmatic component but also incorporated CO2-rich components and metals released by dewatering of host sediments in response to granitoid intrusion. The low grade of regional metamorphism resulted in the significant fluid input from country rocks which led to the more exotic mineral compositions, especially where argillaceous sediments were involved

The subject of optimal planning of level and raise spacing for inclined narrow reef deposits has received intermittent attention over the years because the subject matter is inherently complex. Previous work has approached the problem as simply that of simultaneously minimizing the total excavation and haulage cost associated with the development workings. However, when level and raise spacing are altered, other factors such as productivity are negatively affected, thus requiring a delicate trade-off of contradicting planning or optimization criteria. The paper concludes that the problem is actually of the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type, contrary to traditional thinking that the planning problem is achieved solely by minimizing waste development.

Diffusion phenomena in mine airways are important to trace gas and dust introduced into mine ventilation flows. Authors have carried out tracer gas measurements to check mine ventilation using concentration-time curves measured in mine airways, however dispersion mechanism to enhance effective diffusion have not been cleared. A numerical model using discrete tracer points dosed into tube flow has been presented to simulate their movements in consideration of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation. Numerical simulations have been carried out to predict distributions of dosed points in tube flows with turbulent velocity profile, turbulent intensity profile and Reynolds stress. The numerical simulation results show that a combination of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation creates extremely large dispersion of points in longitudinal direction and concentration curve with long tail was observed. This dispersion by velocity profile and fluctuation contributes large effective diffusion coefficient compared with original diffusion coefficient dominating in uniform velocity fields. Furthermore, the effect of Reynolds stress on the concentration-time curves is discussed.

Until now there has been controversy about which tests should be performed to diagnose early Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Initial screening questions, especially about tingling and numbness, routinely given to patients prior to examinations proved to be a very important tool in the diagnostic process1, 4. However, standardized tests that are simple, quick, valid and reliable are needed to support a diagnosis of HAVS. Purpose: To find the most valid and reliable tests to diagnose HAVS. Material and Methods Five major tests were performed on Group I and Group II. Group I: Control group of 12 volunteers including students, nurses, secretaries and physicians with no history of using vibrating tools (age 20 to 50y, mean age 38.5y; 5male, 5 female.) Group II: 12 workers (age 17 to 65y, mean age 39y; 9 male, 3 female) were sent by a local trade union with a history of using vibrating power tools on their jobs for varying amounts of time (mean 12.2y, from 0.5 to 35y.) Pre-enrollment survey showed that each had more than 4 complaints commonly associated with use of vibrating tools (including numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, finger color or nail changes, temperature change, and difficulty moving.) 1. Sensory nerve conductive tests: Amplitude and nerve conductive velocity (NCV) were evaluated. 2. Cold Stress-Temperature recovery time tests were done on the index finger of the dominant hand following these steps: Confirm water bath is within 4-5º C. Place the finger temperature probe on pad of the index finger of the dominant hand. Record temperature every 15 seconds. Place subject’s hand in the cold- water bath for exactly five minutes. Record temperature every 15 seconds for ten minutes. 3. Blood test: Venous blood was taken by a 21-gauge needle with the yellow collection tube adapter. S-ICAM, Sera Thrombomodulin, Norepinephrine levels were evaluated by Henderson Research Centre, Canada. 4. Finger Sensory Evaluation: Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test and 2-point discrimination tests were performed on bilateral fingers. 5. Digital blood pressure test: blood pressure was measured in bilateral index fingers. Results 1. Median nerve sensory conductive amplitude from palm to wrist : GI: mean 96 ± 31µm; GII: mean 43± 30µm; for dominant hands. GI vs GII: P<0.001

On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. To carry out a physicochemical substantiation of a transition to ?soft? modes of reduction of calcine obtained by desulfurizing roasting of nickel concentrate produced as a result of copper-nickel converter matte separation in a nickel anode production circuit, an analysis has been conducted of the macrokinetic behavior of actual calcine samples in the presence of gaseous H2-CO mixtures and solid reductant additives. Within a temperature range of 900°C to 1100°C the main regularities typical of the calcine reduction process with individual gases (H2, CO) also take place when using a gaseous mixture. Under the conditions of low-temperature (900°C to 1000°C) nickel oxide reduction with products of fuel oil conversion in the presence of coke, the role of the latter is insignificant from the technological viewpoint. As a result of the present investigations, we have obtained analytical expressions of macrokinetic parameters of the reaction interaction within the [NiO] calcine-H2-CO-C-CO2-H2O-O2-N2 system.

"Hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is the most prevalent industrial disease. It is ranked on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) priority list for major work related injuries. Uncontrolled noise not only has a physical effect, but is also a psychological hazard affecting the performance and well being of man. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is irreversible, yet it is preventable. The first defence against noise (noise control engineering) is a high priority in the mining industry. Second defences should be a last resort when the engineering control of noise is inadequate. Hearing conservation programs and the use of conventional hearing protection devices seem to have failed in the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. If compensation payouts that quadrupled in the past ten years are used as a barometer for the success of existing hearing conservation programs, then new strategies and technologies need to be investigated. The best practice Hearing Protection Device (HPD) may be seen as the minimum standard for second defence noise control.Conventional hearing protection is widely applied, but also misused in the industry as well as in the mining sector. Empirical research results, ownership, general attitudes of workers as well as qualitative aspects will be explored. The paper provides reasons, evidence, case studies and strategies regarding the best practice hearing protection philosophy (the Noise Clipper Model) as implemented in the Implats Mining Group. Worldwide tendencies towards custom-made HPD’s, findings that indicate improvements in hearing conservation programs and finally the successful application of Custom-made Hearing Protection Devices, will be outlined."

The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. "Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this due to higher solar cell efficiencies, larger and thinner wafers, more extensive recycling of waste material and new routes for the production of silicon feedstock. The raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. This may favour increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar cell production chain.SOLAR CELL PRODUCTION CHAIN SCENARIOSThe major problem concerning solar cells is the production costs. Electricity produced from fossil fuels and hydropower plants are currently much cheaper than the electricity produced from solar cells. Also, limited availability of silicon feedstock for the production of crystalline silicon solar cells is considered a major threat to the further growth of the PV industry. The present route for solar silicon feedstock goes from quartz, through metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) and to electronic-grade silicon (EG-Si). The reject from the EG-Si production are further processed into wafers and solar cells. This situation is not satisfying, however, because it has created a silicon feedstock shortage and a PV energy price that is not competitive in a large scale.Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. Also, the future silicon ""feedstock"" is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon, as it is today. There will probably be a more direct solargrade silicon route, excluding the very expensive electronic-grade silicon ""detour"". Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain"

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Tech (Engineering Metallurgy) degree This investigation relates to a multi-purpose electrolytic system. Its primary purpose is to electrowin gold from high or low concentration gold cyanide solutions and/or from gold sludge, and to convert the recovered gold into a gold (alloy) electroform or electrode at the gold mine itself. These operations are carried out sequentially and in situ in the same electrolytic cell. Electrorefining of the gold recovered may also be done in the cell. The system applies to silver as well, and may be adaptable to base and platinum group metals. It could also be used in environmental applications, to remove undesirable metals present in aqueous solution at very low concentration. The work to be discussed forms part of recently filed patent applications. Subsequent and future developments of the system are briefly outlined. With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand &#8596; Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1962; in general, the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 gives the results of an investigation which, although too limited to warrant separate publication, merits presentation in some detail because of current interest in ammonium nitrate-fuel oil compositions.

In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. These variables should allow any operator and short-term planner to take action in mines operated with conventional panel caving in a complex geotechnical environment.CITATION:Rivera, N, Music, A and Cisternas, C, 2016. Drilling of a pier hole is accompanied with stress releasing in the surrounding soil and often with loosening of soil at the pier base. In effect the drilled piers are more deformable than driven piles of comparable dimension. The bearing performance of a pier may be considerably improved by properly executed base grouting. Various techniques of base grouting are used; many of them were described by Bruce (1986). The grouting devices are often placed within the pier. Alternatively the soil at or under the base is treated by cement or chemical grout. Preloading of the base subsoil by use of a special grouting cell is considered as the most effective way. Treatment of the ground below pier base with cement or chemical grout may be also useful. It may be performed immediately after the pier construction or during service, as a measure for increasing the pier capacity.
