Located in downtown New York City, this project necessitated an innovative conveyor design for successful muck removal. This paper will discuss the technical challenges and engineering solutions of the muck transport system which consists of every commonly recognized version of a belt conveyor. The elaborate system includes a TBM conveyor integral to the back-up system, a wall-mounted extensible conveyor, a crown-mounted transfer conveyor, a floor-mounted fixed-length conveyor, a pocket-belt vertical conveyor, three cascading overland conveyors, and one radial stacker. The most challenging design element was an over-land conveyor featuring a box truss for muck transportation over Northern Boulevard while simultaneously going under the Queens Plaza railroad viaduct. An overview of the project is provided along with the following topics: developing final plans from the proposal concept, interfacing with existing works, communication with the joint venture, and complying with local regulations.

Although every structural blasting project presents special challenges, this undertaking was most notable for its unusually unique structural design, tight clearances, and high risk to adjacent structures.

AngloGold Ashanti operate a pyrite flotation plant at their East Gold Plant, Acid Plant and Flotation Plant (EGAF) metallurgical complex within their Vaal River operations in the North West province in South Africa. The flotation plant feed is reclaimed pyrite rich tailings and the concentrate produced is used as the source of sulphur for the EGAF acid plant. The sulphuric acid produced is in turn used for the recovery of uranium at the Vaal River South uranium plant. The original flotation plant built in 1960 was based on the use of many small volume flotation cells and was becoming very expensive to operate and its age severely limited further operation. A decision was taken in 2005 to replace this plant with a new one based on fewer, larger volume flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of using larger volume flotation cells in this new flotation plant when compared to the smaller volume flotation cells in the old plant. The benefits of the new plant include a smaller plant footprint, fewer flotation cells, fewer pumps, no distribution boxes, simpler piping, a greater flotation volume and a reduction in installed power. The saving in capital cost could not be quantified because of the age of the old plant. The savings in operating cost will arise from fewer operators, less maintenance and reduced power consumption. The new plant has not been in operation long enough to quantify the benefits in operating cost and metallurgical performance. However, recovery improvements can be expected given the greater flotation volume (increased residence time) and the installation of larger, more efficient flotation cells.

In Part I of this work,1 equations of elasticity were formulated for transversely isotropic, axisymmetric, homogeneous, porous media exhibiting pore fluid pressure. Equations of elasticity and the thermal analogy method were used to determine transient horizontal, tangential, and vertical stresses and radial displacement in a semi-infinite cylindrical region when either a constant rate of pressure or a constant rate of flow is maintained at the wellbore. In this paper, the approach presented earlier is extended to finite reservoirs for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at the well bore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Results of this work show that radial and tangential stress gradients are high near the wellbore but diminish rapidt; away from the well; the vertical stress gradient behaves in the same way but is less severe. Radial stresses are compressive or neutral, whereas tangential and vertical stresses may be tensile, neutral or com-pressive, depending upon the boundary conditions, the physical Properties of the system and the radial distance involved (vertical stresses are always compressive in an unbounded system1. For constant boundary pressures, both radial and tangential stresses increase with time whereas they both decrease for a closed outer boundary and constant pressure at the wellbore. The vertical stress decreases with time for both systems. For steady-state systems, radial displacement may be positive or negative, depending upon the dimensions of the system, the pressure differential and the porosity. Radial displacement may be positive or negative for a closed outer boundary but is positive for constant pressures at both boundaries. INTRODUCTION The importance, utility and complexity of a realistic appraisal of the stress state at and local to a wellbore were indicated in Part I. In this paper the analytical approach presented earlier is extended to finite, cylindrical reservoir geometry for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at wellbore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Other than the outer boundary of the reservoir being finite, the physical system and assumptions pertinent thereto are the same as before. The reader may wish to review the mathematical development through Eq. 49 of Part I before proceeding here. The regional shear zone runs along or near the southern margin of the Chinhoyi greenstone belt. It hosts four of the seven mines in the southern part of the belt with recorded production above 100 kg Au, including the top two current producers. Displacement occurred in the late Archaean, producing a shear zone with a trend ranging from northeast at Golden Kopje to east at Muriel. The orebodies at the two mines formed synchronously with the shearing and show strong but contrasting structural controls on mineralisation. The Golden Kopje orebodies plunge to the southwest, parallel to the intersection of curved foliation with discrete shear planes and sub-perpendicular to local stretching lineations. The Muriel orebodies plunge steeply west but parallel to local stretching lineations. The greatest fluid flow during mineralisation of the shear zone was along either the intersection of fabrics (Golden Kopje) or the extension direction (Muriel). There is no unique relation between the orebodies and the extension or shear direction. Where earlier mining has not established the directions of the oreshoots it is essential to understand the possible structurally controlled geometries of orebodies before planning a drilling programme to evaluate their potential

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) was developed 10 years ago to fill the gap between geologic characterization and engineering design. It combines many years of geologic studies in underground coal mines with world-wide experience with rock mass classification systems. Like other classification systems, the CMRR begins with the premise that the structural competence of mine roof rock is determined mainly by the discontinuities that weaken the rock fabric. However, the CMRR is specifically designed for bedded coal measure rock. Since its introduction, the CMRR has been incorporated into many aspects of mine planning, including longwall pillar design, roof support selection, feasibility studies, extended-cut evaluation, and others. It has also become truly inter-national, with involvement in mine designs and funded research projects in South Africa, Canada, and Australia. This paper discusses the sources used in developing the CMRR, describes the CMRR data collection and calculation procedures, and briefly presents a number of practical mining applications in which the CMRR has played a prominent role.

The high degree of mechanisation, which is mainly diesel-powered, has a significant effect on heat loads; heat output from this source often exceeds the heat flow from the surrounding rock. The extensive use of diesel-powered equipment also influences ventilation rates and minimum values are necessary to ensure that emissions of diesel exhaust are adequately diluted. Many Australian mines are in subtropical or tropical areas with high ambient wet- and dry-bulb temperatures on surface. This, coupled with the large amount of heat from mechanisation, usually means that refrigeration is required at much shallower depths. A secondary problem is associated with the definition of acceptable thermal environment conditions, which are sometimes based on the assumption of no air movement. "The investigation is dedicated to study of biohydrometallurgical processing of refractory gold-arsenic concentrate with the large content of pyrrhotite. Sulfide concentrate of chemical constituents: 75g/t Au, 4,7g/t Ag, 6,3% As, 29,3% S, 2,3% Sb, 0,5% ? (organic) and of mineral composition, %: 11,8 arsenopyrite, 39 pyrrhotite, 12 pyrite, 2,9 antimonite and the rest – aluminosilicates, carbonates and quartz, was studied. The recovery of gold from concentrate by cyanidation is 51,2%. The rest of gold is embedded as finegraded segregation in sulfides.Sulfide oxidation process study is described. Bacterial oxidation was executed on a pilot laboratory unit using combined autotrophic bacterium: A. thiooxidans , A. ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans and sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidation, pH=1,5-2,2, t=28-32?C, oxidation time 120 hours. Pyrrhotite is the least stable sulfide mineral with electrode potential 0,45V versus arsenopyrite (0,55 V) and pyrite (0,55-0,6 V) and is oxidated primarily. Pyrrhotite oxidation is followed by large amount of elemental sulphur, which has a bad influence on cyanidation.It’s established that the rate of arsenopyrite (for the first 48 hours) from concentrate containing 39% pyrrhotite is 2-3 times as less as the rate of arsenopyrite bio-oxidation from concentrate without pyrrhotite. The arsenopyrite bio-oxidation is accelerated only after the elemental sulfur was oxidized by bacterium A. thiooxidans and elemental sulfur percentage was reduced from 6,8 to 3,9%. The bacterium concentration is increased from 2,5x107 to 2,5x109 cells/ml. Almost full oxidation of arsenopyrite (98%) and pyrrhotite (98- 99%) is finished in 120 hours. We have studied two pretreatment methods for elimination sulfur content influence on cyanidation: aeration in lime and electrochemical treatment. Such an operation enables to have supplemental oxidation of elemental sulfur and other oxygen and cyanide absorbants before cyanidation. After treatment the content of elemental sulfur was decreased from 3,9 to 2,2%, gold recovery from 90 to 96% and cyanide consumption from 16,2 to 7,2 kg/t decreases. The content of toxical rhodonite-ions in liquid phase of pulp and disinfection reagents consumption were decreased as result of elemental sulfur content in bio-oxidated product reduction."

Since 1995, when "freeze lining" refractory systems were introduced to the ferroalloy industry, they have gained in popularity, due to the freeze lining?s reputation for reliability, safety, and the contribution it makes to profitability. As with many popular and effective technologies, however, the freeze lining has spawned low-cost pretenders that claim the "freeze lining" name. On the surface they appear to contain some of the components of the technology, such as thermally conductive materials, but they fail to incorporate all of the principles that define a true Freeze Lining. The term "freeze lining" refers to the refractory system?s ability to maintain a temperature profile that is low enough to freeze a layer of process material on its hot face, which insulates the refractory and prevents direct contact with molten metal and slag. In doing so, the common wear mechanisms found in the submerged arc furnace - chemical attack, erosion, and thermal stress - can be prevented. These wear mechanisms are all related to high temperature; thus, they are prevented by maintaining low temperatures. Certain refractory properties and design concepts are absolutely necessary for the lining system to function as a true Freeze Lining. The paper explains these requirements and why they are important - the Truth of freeze linings - and further explains why systems that ignore one or more of these requirements cannot claim to be freeze linings, thereby exposing the Myths.

These inspection standards have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of bituminous and lignite mines. They are a revision of "Tentative Coal-Mine Inspection Standards," published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7204 in February 1942 and employed a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes have been made in the original standards owing in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part because of need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions' arid' practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared. About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however; failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also' lead' to the loss of lives.

Introduction This paper is a descriptive analysis of injuries and fatalities at small surface bituminous coalmining companies in Pennsylvania. The purpose of analyzing a specific industry sector and location is to identify issues that might be missed in a wider analysis. Other studies of small mine safety (e.g., Peters and Fotta, 1994, Randolph and Boldt, 1997) have shown that the relationship between safety and mine size is not a simple one. Some injury types occur at higher rates at small mines, while others occur at lower rates. Consequently, an analysis limited to a specific type of mining can help identify hazards and issues specific to that sector. The results of this analysis will be useful for directing training, intervention, and research efforts towards the most prevalent causal factors and incident types. Procedures and Definitions Data sources The primary sources of data for this analysis were files provided by MSHA containing information collected under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50. These files, commonly referred to as “Part 50 data”, are provided though MSHA’s Program Evaluation and Information Resources directorate. Two primary types of injuries were selected from the Part 50data: Fatalities (MSHA “degree of injury” code 1) and lost-time injuries, otherwise known as nonfatal with days lost (MSHA “degree of injury” codes 2 through 5). Lost-time injuries involve either actual days away from work or days of restricted activity or both. Fatality and lost-time injury incidence rates were calculated using the standard MSHA formula: Number of injuries per 200,000 employee-hours. Additional information on company sizes and mine ownership was provided by the Pennsylvania State University College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Time span A five-year time span was selected for this study. More than a single year of safety experience is usually needed to capture a broad range of incident types. Many types of injuries, especially fatal injuries, can be extremely rare, and may be missed if too short a time span is selected. However, a time span that extends too far back may begin to suffer historical threats to validity. That is, incidents that occurred several years ago may be caused by hazards that have since been remedied or may be related to mining practices and conditions that no longer exist. A five-year span offers a practical compromise between these two concerns. Consequently, the MSHA Part 50 data files from 1993 through 1997 were used. The 1997 file was in “preliminary” form at the time of the study, so small variations from the final 1997 “close out” file can be expected. Based on past experience, we do not expect the close-out variations to have a significant impact on the findings.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. City Water Tunnel No. 3 is being built in order to provide a redundant system for delivering 4,542,500 m3 (1.2 billion gallons) of water per day throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The present tunnels, City Tunnel No. 1 and 2 (Figure 1), were put in service in 1917 and 1936 respectively, and both have been in continuous service. Tunnels No. 1 and 2 can-not be shut down for inspection or repair until City Tunnel No. 3 has been completed. City Tunnel No. 3 has two stages (Figure 1).Stage One is 20.1 km (12.5 mi) long and is presently delivering drinking water to the boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan. Stage Two consists of the Brooklyn-Queens Tunnel 17.7 km (11 mi) and the Manhattan Tunnel 14 km (9 mi). The Brooklyn-Queens leg is complete and is set to be put in service soon. The Manhattan Tunnel is being constructed and is the subject of this paper. The Manhattan Tunnel (Figure 1) is comprised of three legs: the north, south and east legs. The con-tract includes the excavation of 8,976 m (29,500 ft) of tunnel and the lining of 14,561 m (47,773 ft) of tunnel. The south tunnel, 5,705 m (18,720 ft), was excavated but not lined, under a previous contract. The tunnel ranges from 181 m (600 ft) to 152 m (500 ft) in depth in the bedrock under Manhattan. The tunnel contract also includes the construction of nine new shafts, 161 m (530 ft) average depth, and the completion of a tenth shaft (the previously built construction shaft). The Manhattan Tunnel contract was awarded to the sole bidder Schiavone/Shea/Frontier Kemper Joint Venture (SSF) for $668,532,680.00, on January 31, 2005. The Manhattan Tunnel was designed ?in house? by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the construction management was provided by a combined staff of the DEP and a joint venture of Jenny Engineering and URS.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.

Rutile concentrate, used in the manufacture of welding rode, smoke-screen chemicals, and alloys, is being produced by the Titanium Alloy Co. of Arkansas at its mine and. mill in Magnet Cove. The company estimates a substantial reserve of recoverable rutile. This is a new operation, and production figures are not known. Previous operations had stripped the placer material, leaving the underlying mineralized zone. INTRODUCTION This report describes the mining and milling; operations of the Titanium Alloy Co. of Arkansas. The property was examined by the author on March 4, 1942, and subsequent dates. J. A. Wood, general manager, was very helpful in supplying information.

With an experimental apparatus developed recently, model tests on piles were conducted in sand subjected to triangular soil movement profiles. Four instrumented piles tests are reported, which show the pile behavior predominantly determined by soil sliding depth. Axial load can create additional bending moment and pile deflection, which also make mode of pile-soil interaction change with sliding depth. Limiting resistance was found 1.5~3 times higher than currently used for laterally loaded piles in sand.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

Some low grade South Australian iron ores were classified on the basis of their physical characteristics. Ores from Mount Christie and Billeroo are coarse grained mixed ores; Mount Christie ore could be concentrated by gravity or dry magnetic separation at 10 mesh, but Billeroo ore needed to be crushed minus 36 mesh. Ores from Razorback Ridge and Wilgena Hill are fine grained mixed ores; ore from Wilgena Hill could be concentrated by flotation, but poor results were obtained on Razorback Ridge ore. Malcolm Creek ore is non-magnetic and crystalline, and can be concentrated by flotation, but the deposit is small. Ores from Grants Quarries and Peeralilla Hill are nonmagnetic and earthy and could not be satisfactorily concentrated.INTRODUCTIONThe Geological Survey of South Australia has for several years been undertaking a systematic study of the iron ore resources of the State (excluding the Middleback Ranges) in relation to their geology, reserves, and beneficiation. As part of the latter phase of the investigation samples of the ores have been submitted to The Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (AMDL), and it was the study of these samples which provided the material for this paper.The mineragraphic and metallurgical work was undertaken by several officers of AMDL and the results are contained in unpublished reports submitted to the South Australian Department of Mines. Field data published here was obtained from unpublished reports by G. F. Whitten, Senior Geologist, Iron Exploration, of the Geological Survey of South Australia.

"Abstract Pile design for building structures in the United States is typically performed by: 1) investigating and assigning engineering parameters to the respective ground bearing materials, 2) calculating ultimate pile to ground (geotechnical) capacity which is then reduced by a Safety Factor deemed appropriate by a registered Design Professional thereby arriving at an allowable pile geotechnical pile capacity, and 3) determining the required pile structural section using allowable pile section material properties. It is advantageous to use a Working Stress Design Method (WSDM) approach as one system of loads (service loads) are used in both the geotechnical and structural evaluation. There are a variety of methods used to determine the ultimate and allowable geotechnical capacity, and Building Codes often require a registered Design Professional to determine the appropriate method(s) and capacities. The International Building Code is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Structural design usually follows Building Code requirements and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) procedures. As design of the overlying structure typically follows a Strength Design Method (SDM) approach using factored loads, in some cases piling is first designed for pile-to-soil interaction using service loads, followed by evaluating the pile geometry for factored loads. Construction is the finalization and implementation of the designed piling. There are several Industry groups, including DFI, PDCA, ADSC, and ACI that provide guidance documents which the registered Design Professional can refer to in developing the piling technical specifications. It is the author’s opinion that the registered Design Professional is best suited to observe and verify the piling installation; many Building Departments require verification and documentation by a registered Professional as a condition of final acceptance.INTRODUCTIONPile design for building structures consists of: investigation, design, specification, and verification. In major metropolitan areas within the United States, Building Codes typically identify minimum requirements for each of the above steps. The International Building Code (ICC, 2012) is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Recognizing the ground conditions as well as piling construction means and methods can vary on a site-by-site basis, latitude is given to the registered Design Professional and Contractor to optimize the piling system for the respective project conditions. Field testing and quality control / assurance measures are typically implemented to verify the design intent is attained for the production pile elements."
