"A brief history of previous mining activity on Coal Mountain, near Corbin, British Columbia, is followed by a description of the steps leading up to the resumption of mining in /974 by Byron Creek Collieries. New developments, including a preparation plant, a rail spur and a totally enclosed facility, as well as operating techniques, are also discussed. IntroductionThe Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Limited is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 110 air miles southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), 15 miles south of Highway 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). Development of the area began on July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J . Robert s, first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. , after acquiring 15,000 acres of land in the area , began to develop a mine.F.J. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 14-mile rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production.The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3), and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,337,800 tons. This production was allocated to the mines as shown in Table 1. No.3, 4 and 6 mines were operated intermittently from 1931 to 1935."

The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). "The location of Quintette Coal Limited's pit and geologic nature of the dedicated reserves combine to introduce a number of factors which can adversely affect waste dump stability. These factors include steep terrain, variable material type and particle size, and precipitation. This paper describes the solutions to related waste dump problems. A brief geotechnical review of the waste dumps is given and Quintette's operational strategies during periods of dump stability and instability are discussed. Despite best efforts, failures occasionally occur and discussion is included on Quintette's success at bringing failed dumps safely back into use. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is situated on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Tumbler Ridge, approximately 120 km southwest of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. This surface mine is located on mountainous terrain and is subject to climatic extremes of wind, precipitation and temperature.QCL has a current annual production of 4.75 million tonnes of metallurgical coal with a stripping ratio of 7: 1. This correctly implies the extraction of over 33 million bank cubic metres (BCM) of waste which is placed on numerous waste dumps at various locations adjacent to the pit.There are three active pits - Mesa, Wolverine, and Shikano (Fig. 1). Shikano is a newly developed pit located near the plant site. It is not subject to the unique dump management problems prevalent at the Mesa and Wolverine pits, therefore the Shikano waste dumps will not be discussed . The dumps for the Mesa and Wolverine pits, however, have been technically and operationally challenging since shortly after mining began in 1983. Their characteristics, associated site specifics and management, therefore, are the subject of this paper.Waste dump locations for the Mesa and Wolverine pits are shown in Figures 2 and 3 as is the relative waste distribution . Each sub-pit is connected to a principal waste dump in reasonable proximity and to an alternate dump should disposal of waste be necessary at that location. The waste dumps are constructed from the top elevations initially to coincide with subpit development. In the initial years (1-7) waste dump heights will be up to 250 m, then, as the mine matures (8-20 years), waste dump maximum heights will continuously decrease to coincide with lower bench elevations"

Although no complete mineralogical balances have been published, the background knowledge and proven, highly sensitive analytical techniques to produce them already exist. For PGE-Cu-Ni sulphide ores a combination of ore microscopy, image analysis and electron microprobe analysis with proton microprobe analysis of sulphides for Pd, Rh and Ru and ion microprobe analysis for Pt, Ir and Rh (in some minerals) should provide the necessary data when combined with reliable assays. Other sulphide ores, such as the Cu-Ni-(PGE) ores of Sudbury, Ontario, require a similar approach except that the ion microprobe would be more suitable for the analysis of Pd, Pt and Rh because of its greater sensitivity. Oxide-silicate ores may be harder to deal with quantitatively, although the potential to confirm the presence of trace PGE within silicates and oxides may be greater than in PGE sulphide and Cu-Ni-(PGE) sulphide ores. However, solid solution of PGE in oxides and silicates still requires thorough documentation and evaluation in terms of their significance for the overall metallurgical balance

In an inflationary environment the need for reduced cost is a daily concern of all industries. The Du Pont do Brasil "Expanded Pattern" method has proven to be an extremely effective means of reducing costs in mining, quarrying and construction operations. Over the past years much emphasis was placed on rectangular drilling patterns where the burdens are less than the spacing. The Expanded Pattern method combining rectangular and staggered patterns, was implemented in 1971 in Brazil after extensive trials in close collaboration with numerous explosives users and Du Pont do Brasil Technical Services Engineers. The best multiple row spacing-to-burden ratio (S/B) was demonstrated to be in the 2 to 5 range and the effective spacing to burden ratio (Se/Be) was found to vary from 5 to 11. These ratios are for the interior of the blast pattern and do not hold true along the front row of holes. Geological rock properties, hole diameter and inclination, explosives energy and loading density, explosives characteristics, blast pattern geometry, bench height and delay patterns along with type and size of digging, hauling and crushing equipment must all be evaluated for each and every operation. The integration of these interrelated parameters, together with sound blasting practices are the basis for the Expanded Pattern method. Color slides and documented case histories will be presented.

A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson, Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001,000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,411,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

The Objective: To reduce the noise generated by the exhausting air from a pneumatic roof bolting drill to a maximum of 90 decibels. Any attachment used for this purpose must be lightweight and must not cause a significant increase in back pressure. The Approach: Absorb the noise with a properly designed muffler that will permit sufficient airflow without affecting the normal operation of the drill. How It Works: The air exhausted by the drill enters the muffler through perforated disks into a resonator chamber. It then passes through a series of expansion and contraction chambers and is expelled to the atmosphere through another perforated disk. The basic muffler design for the pneumatic drill was established by using both digital computer analysis and experimentally simulated noise tests. Metal casting is one of the most important operations in ferroalloys factories. After the tapping of the furnace and the depuration of the metal, the preparation for customers with cooling, crushing and sizing begins. In total production costs, this contains around 8 % of the total cost of the metal, depending on the value of the fines and other important parameters. From an investment point of view, this represents around 20% of the total capital for a new furnace. Casting onto a water-refrigerated copper plate is not new for molten metals. In steel, continuous casting machines are normal in every factory. Water granulation casting exists at some ferroalloys plants. However, the majority of plants and production technology still use the technology of lumping, crushing and sizing. This technology is time consuming, produces fines and requires a relatively large work force. In 2001, Ferroatlantica put into operation a new water-cooled copper casting-machine, which seems to be a very convenient solution to solve all these problems. It is in operation at a silicon factory; the same place where the new ELSA electrode was developed for silicon metal production. This paper describes our experiences using it.

"The adaptation to platinum-group minerals (PGMs) of a protocol developed to predict gold recovery by gravity is presented. The protocol is based on three different data sets: ore characterization of gravity-recoverable minerals, description of their behaviour in cyclones and ball mills, and performance of recovery units. Examples of these are given. It is shown that the gravity-recoverable PGM (GRPGM) content can be very high. A case study at the Clarabelle mill is presented. Sperrylite is the dominant platinum mineral, and its partition curve is very similar to that of gold, despite its lower density. Its grinding kinetics is significantly higher than for gold. As a result, sperrylite accumulates in finer sizes than native gold, but can still be recovered by gravity or flash flotation. Recovery projections based on gravity recoverable data are presented.BACKGROUNDReliable modeling of gold recovery by gravity or flash flotation from a grinding circuit is based on the ability to describe the properties of gold-bearing particles in the ore, their behaviour in grinding and classification units and the performance of the equipment used for recovery, be it gravity or flotation. Three complete connector assemblies and six separate contacts were submitted to a series of tests to establish the connectors permissibility and compliance with U. S. Bureau of Mines research Contract #H 0110423 D.C. portion. Test Procedure TPC-0118 was coordinated, and the test plan approved by the Bureau as fully complying with the intent of the contract for the direct current connectors. The components and connector assemblies have been demonstrated in testing that they meet or exceed all the requirements of the test procedure.

Today, a typical blaster is likely to wear many hats, including, but not limited to, supervisor, risk manager, safety coordinator, explosives engineer, communicator, as well as professional decision maker. Simply put, a blaster in the new millennium is an all encompassing blast site manager. As you know, accidents on the blast site can range from blast crew injuries to blasting incidents resulting from vibration, flyrock, misfires, etc. Not surprising, the incidents can quite often be traced back to direct preventable human action on the blast site. They can, however, frequently be avoided, if responsibly identified early and managed properly by an efficient blast site manager. Your company cannot afford to simply employ blasters; good blast site managers are necessary to produce the safest results possible.

Agglomeration techniques are widely used by industry to form fine particles into larger masses that are easier to handle and process. One area where agglomeration is potentially useful is in heap leaching operations. With-out agglomeration, fine particles travel through the heap, clogging the spaces between the larger particles and resulting in poor leach solution flow. Poor flow of leach solution will result in long leach rates and/or decreased metal recovery. Agglomeration immobilizes the fine particles and therefore improves heap permeability to fluid flow. Additional additives (binders) are needed to prevent agglomerates from breaking up as leaching solution percolates through the heap. Type II Portland cement and lime are two well-known binders used in gold and silver leaching, but these are limited to alkaline leaching environments. Various other products have been tested as binders, including polymers. This paper summarizes the benefits of agglomeration in heap leaching and the results obtained from the testing of several different agglomeration binders in heap leaching operations.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "Phosphate ore is one of the most significant secondary resources for rare earth elements (REEs), and Florida phosphate is of particular interest due to its much higher ratio of heavy REEs, especially yttrium. Analyses of numerous samples from different phosphate processing streams in Florida showed that heavy REEs account for about 50% of the total REEs in Florida phosphate with yttrium accounting for approximately 30%. It was estimated that the amount of yttrium from US phosphate processing could meet the world demand for this critical element. This research aimed at recovering both REEs and phosphorus from a phosphate flotation tails. This tails is composed of mainly silica and phosphate with a small fraction of heavy minerals including monazite and xenotime. Since the specific gravity of silica is 2.6 versus 3.2 for phosphate and 4.5-5 for rare earth minerals, pre-concentration of the minerals of interest by gravity separation was investigated first. A pilot scale shaking table was used in this study. One pass gravity concentration achieved a shaking table concentrate analyzing over 600 ppm REEs at about 40% recovery. Flotation of the shaking table concentrate resulted in a product containing 1809 ppm REEs and 26.37% P2O5 with corresponding recoveries of 73% and 82%. Sulfuric acid leaching at 75oC could recover over 60% REE and nearly all the P2O5. Higher REEs (>90%) recovery was achieved by conducting leaching at higher temperature with concentrated sulfuric acid. The phosphoric acid from leaching of the flotation concentrate is of superior quality compared with that generated from regular phosphate rock.INTRODUCTION Rare earths are a group of 17 elements including those of the lanthanum series, as well as the non-lanthanides, yttrium and scandium. These elements have very specific critical uses in a multitude of markets. For example, lanthanum is used as a catalyst in breaking down crude oil to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel and neodymium is the core magnetic component in high-strength magnets for electric car batteries, wind turbines and hard disk drives. Rare earths are also essential for many military applications. Many of these applications have no substitute materials and the move to green technologies has dramatically increased their demand."

The Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) project will extend commuter and future statewide high-speed rail service into the Transbay Transit Center, which will be located in the business district in downtown San Francisco. The DTX project includes 1.5 miles of underground construction, comprising complex sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. As part of the DTX preliminary engineering process, development of appropriate contracting practices, including contract packaging, procurement methods and contract terms for the underground construction, has been initiated. This paper provides a summary of the evaluations undertaken, preliminary conclusions reached, and proposed next steps to promote industry interest and maximize bid competition.

To improve the air quality in large-opening stone mines by developing better ventilation techniques, including appropriate fan selection in conjunction with air-coursing methods. Background Stone mines are the most common underground large-entry mines in the United States. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for the year 2000 indicate that there were 162 active nonmetal underground mines in the United States, of which 117 were stone mines. Many underground stone mines are drift mines developed from previous quarry operations. Typically, these room-and-pillar mines have entries that are 20 ft or higher and at least 40 ft wide. These large dimensions lead to a very small ventilating pressure loss, even when significant air quantities move through the mine. This is especially true of drift mine operations where ventilating pressure losses of <0.25 in w.g. are common. Underground stone mines with shafts that are<200 ft deep typically have ventilating pressure losses that are <2 in w.g. The pressure losses through these mines are much lower than those of a typical coal mine or deep metal/nonmetal mine. Therefore, the ventilation techniques and principles are quite different. In addition, because of new MSHA regulations that limit the concentration of diesel particulate matter, these mines may need to greatly increase their ventilation airflow. Therefore, large-opening mines need a fan that can move large air quantities and operate at low static pressures. There are three fan types for mine ventilation: centrifugal, axial vane, and propeller. Centrifugal fans are uncommon in underground stone mines as they are often associated with mines requiring the highest of ventilation pressures. Axial vane fans are widely used in all types of mining operations. They are the most common fan type currently found in underground large-opening stone mines. However, they typically do not operate at low static pressures with high efficiency. Propeller fans are currently uncommon in underground stone mines. They are designed for low static pressures and large air quantities at higher efficiency. This fan type best suits the ventilation needs in large-opening stone mines?they produce large air quantities at low pressure losses. Mines with air shafts<100 ft long and at least 12 ft in diameter have fairly low mine static pressures and may also benefit from propeller fans.

Grade control and short-term planning are usually based on the samples obtained from blastholes. These samples may carry a large sampling and sample preparation error. At El Tesoro copper mine in northern Chile, an advance drilling grid is used for short-term planning and grade control. These drill holes are sampled well in advance, and a short-term model that incorporates several variables and sophisticated estimation methods can be prepared for decisionmaking. An additional advantage of the advance drilling samples is that reverse circulation can be used instead of conventional down-the-hole equipment, and a very careful sampling and sample preparation process can be implemented, reducing the total sampling error. Advance drilling can be performed on a wider grid than blasthole drilling, hence the decision about the grid requires assessing the economic benefit of different sampling grids. Furthermore, this process allows the cost of poor sampling and the effect of different estimation procedures to be quantified. We demonstrate the optimization of the drilling grid for short-term planning and grade control at El Tesoro mine by means of the economic evaluation of the performance of different drilling grids, with different drilling techniques (which differ in the sampling error). The methodology is based on creating dense (exhaustive) geostatistical simulations of the grade distribution over a volume defined for a production period in respect of the geological model, and assuming each simulation as the true grade distribution. Then, samples are obtained from the exhaustive simulations at a spacing similar to the advance grid to be evaluated, and a sampling error is added. The short-term estimation procedures used on the mine are applied to determine the destination of each block and the profit obtained. This profit can be compared with the maximum profit (unachievable) and with the profit under different sampling errors and grids. The results show that the current 8 x 8 m drilling grid is appropriate and by reducing the sampling error, misclassification is also reduced, leading to an increase in profit of about US$ 5 million in 4 years.

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

One of the major problems of mineral exploration is the ability to reliably distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and economic mineralization. While the mining industry uses many geophysical methods to locate the mineral deposits, until recently, there was no reliable technology for mineral resources identification and characterization. The main goal of this project is to develop a new geophysical technique for subsurface material characterization, mineral exploration and mineral discrimination, based on electromagnetic methods. The proposed new technique is based on examining the spectral induced polarization effects in electromagnetic data using the modern distributed acquisition systems and advanced methods of 3-D modeling and inversion. The recovered parameters of the relaxation model will be used for the discrimination of different rocks, and in this way will provide an ability to distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and zones of economic mineralization using geophysical remote sensing technology (Zonge, 1976). The proposed research and development is undertaken using multi-partner collaboration between the University of Utah, four major mining companies, Kennecott Exploration, BHP Billiton World Exploration Inc., Placer Dome Inc., Phelps Dodge Exploration, and Zonge Engineering Inc., which is equipment manufacturer and service provider to the mining industry. The multi-partner collaboration between the academic institution, the University of Utah, and mining industry helps to identify the appropriate mining target and conduct the field experiment for practical demonstration of the developed new technology, which is an important part of the this project.
