A geological model accounting for uncertainties possesses important advantages for resource estimation. Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) employed on multivariate geochemical datasets open up ways to new methodologies for such geological models with ease in comparison to traditional geostatistical methods. This article proposes a two-step MLA with an ensemble implementation to define geological domains and their uncertainties based on geochemical data. The proposed workflow is applied hierarchically on a dataset from a porphyry copper deposit to perform binary classification that can be attributed to alteration domains.

THE subject matter of this paper will be primarily restricted to the metallic mineral industry, which last year was responsible for almost 60 per •Cent of the total value of Canada's mineral production. It has been written that, in the broad sweep of eternal time, sixty years is as transient as a flicker of lightning in a summer night's sky. In the history of mankind and human endeavour, however, six decades can encompass momentous events and far-reaching •circumstances, all of which affect the lives of men and change the destiny of nations. This observation is con-firmed very positively by a study of our Canadian mining history, from either the broad viewpoint of human progress or the more specialized viewpoint of national economy. The past sixty years have witnessed vast changes in the economic importance of mining in this country's affairs, and also in the technology of the industry. Mining has emerged from the days of rule-of-thumb practice and is now taking on the stature of a highly diversified science.

Computer control has been one of the fastest moving and most glamorous fields of industrial development in the past decade. A review of this period shows some truly remarkable accomplishments in both system development and applications. In addition, work now under way promises results which will continue the rate of progress of the past. This paper will review the history and status of the field of computer control and point out the major breakthroughs which have occurred. It will analyze the present trends and extrapolate them to predict the early future developments in the field.

Mineragraphy is a coined term to signify the field of microscopic investigation of ore minerals. The term is not euphonius and is sometimes regarded as superfluous because the subject is no more than an enlargement of the scope of petrology. In the past the practical field of petrology has been largely limited by the instruments which were designed for the study of rocks and' the microscopical properties of the transparent minerals. The addition of mineragraphy has been brought about by the use of the reflecting microscope and a totally different technique.The use of the petrological microscope, as it has been employed in the training oi geologists and mining engineers for nearly half a century, has been justified many times, not only in its application to general geological problems, but also in the more restricted field of the exploration and examination of ore deposits. It provides information of the gangue minerals and rocks associated with an ore body which is of great value in some mining fields. In cases where ore deposits occur selectively in certain favourable types of rock, the recognition and delineation of these rock types is a useful guide in prospecting. The Boulder Belt at Kalgoorlie forms one of the most striking examples in Australia where important significance is attached to different rock types, and the petrological microscope is essential to their elucidation.

The growth and influence of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in the nickel producing industry has been quite phenomenal. Although the company's Lynn Lake deposit in Manitoba was actually dis- covered in 1941, it was not until 1945, when men and materials were more readily available as a result of the end of World War II, that the area was staked and news of the discovery leaked out. As a result of the discovery, Professor Frank Forward of the University of British Columbia was commissioned by Eldon Brown, then President and Man- aging Director of Sherritt, to develop a new nickel refining process. A pilot plant, based on the results of Professor Forward's research, was constructed in Ottawa, and after the successful testing of the Lynn Lake ore, Chemical Construction Co. was given a con- tract in 1952 for construction of a producing plant. By 1954, the Fort Saskatchewan refinery was operating at an annual production of 15 million lb of nickel metal in the form of briquetts or powder. Capacity has since been increased to 30 million lb.

An account of a new method of investigating the electrical .properties J the earth's crust is presented. The method, called AFMAG, employs, as a source, natural alternating magnetic fields of audio and sub-audio frequencies. Measurements of the distortion of these fields caused by geological features are made with the aid of search coil detectors at several discrete frequencies. Many results of field surveys made with the method are presented and they illustrate its advantages and limitations when applied to the search for massive sulphide mineralization. The advantages far outweigh the limitations and in fact indicate that a major breakthrough in geophysical exploration technique and instrumentation has been made.

The Upper Devonian Kettle Point black shale of southern Ontario is poorly exposed. Structural maps pre-pared from the data of numerous wells show that the upper surface of the formation has low regular relief, and that the lower surface reflects domes in the Middle Devonian and also local subsidence of the Devonian rocks due to solution of salt in the Silurian Salina Formation. The appearance of minor amounts. of marcasite, pyrite, and calcite, m that order, as interpreted from the evidence of concretions from the type locality at Kettle Point is thought to have been influenced by a rise m the pH within anaerobic sediments preceding compaction.

Although much talked about, social licence to operate (SLTO) is a relatively new concept that has been deemed as one of the four biggest business risks to a mining project over the life-of-mine. There is no accepted single definition of SLTO and this author understands SLTO to be stakeholder perception of the legitimacy of a project, a company or an industry. At a specific site, and across different sites within the same organisation, SLTO ranges through different levels according to stakeholders’ degrees of acceptance in time and space. Management of SLTO is vital for the mining sector but is difficult as it is informal and intangible. Although there are no key performance indicators, there are certain indicators that enable relative measurement of the ‘level’ of the SLTO. Because of the importance of the SLTO, information management during the entire life-of-mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, becomes crucial for the continued operation of a project. "This paper presents the geologic and ground control challenges that were encountered by CONSOL Energy’s mining operations in southwestern Pennsylvania. A sandstone-to-limestone geology transition was encountered by Mine A, where the primary 8-foot bolts were anchored in claystone. Upon experiencing roof sags and a roof fall in the return entry, 6-foot high-tension, fully-grouted primary bolts were employed along with 16-foot center cable bolts at every other strap to improve beam building and to ensure proper anchorage into the competent limestone. No longwall delay was reported within this geologic transition zone, although there was some difficulty in maintaining an open #2 entry airway behind the longwall face.The geologic encounter in Mine B was more complex, where fluvial deposits of massive sandstone channels, shale channels and pyritic-rich, green claystones were encountered on both sides of the mains, and which impacted both development and longwall ground control. In particular, poor transitional roof areas near the edges of the sandstone and shale channels often posed significant ground control challenges. In addition, hydraulic fracturing was sometimes utilized to enhance caving of massive sandstone behind the shields to relieve pressure at the face. Longwall face conditions and advance rates were documented to illustrate the effects of sandstone channels, shale channels, and green claystones on safety and productivity and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing.Shale channels, slickensided zones, laminated roof zones, soft floor, and a regional syncline were encountered in Mine C, the combination of which posed unique ground control challenges during both development and longwall mining. The presence of soft floor, coupled with the presence of thick floor coal and deep cover, resulted in headgate convergence during retreat of the first right-hand longwall panel. Two-piece 8-foot bolts were sometimes observed to fail at the coupler within the laminated roof zone, and 6-foot, 1-piece, fully-grouted point-anchor bolts were employed as the primary bolts thereafter."

THE need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. WASHABILITY STUDIES The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money, can hardly be spent on "feed surveys" to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus.

Shane is enjoying his new work. Six months ago, he was stocking shelves at his local supermarket and decided to make the big move to a job in mining with more challenge and, of course, more dollars. He's been through his inductions, received his training tickets and is now working in a crew of eight underground at a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operation. There are many more systems and processes here than in his retail job, and Shane's comfortable that his safety is being looked after. He is enjoying the continually changing work and conditions, it makes the job interesting. It's taking some time to get used to the roster and he is worn out by changeover, but he gets more time with friends and family during R & R.   Generally, the mining industry has a maturing safety culture and well developed systems. This sometimes lulls people into a false sense of security. Safety systems cannot anticipate every possible situation, nor can they replace people's perception, thinking and decision-making. To manage safety, it's critical to find the right balance between dependence on systems and a healthy fear and respect of risks we face.   As safety standards are raised, systems tend to get more thorough and complex. When a new person joins a mining crew, we induct and train them to provide the information they need. As labour availability again becomes short, and many new people join our industry, we shouldn't assume they know the fundamentals. We need to explain not only what they are expected to do, but why doing what we ask and expect will keep them safe. We must equip people to deal with both the routine and the unexpected.   This presentation explores the challenges of balancing a structured, systematic approach to safety with the need to also equip people to deal effectively with risks everyday in dynamic and extraordinary situations.   Session purpose Introduce participants to a way of looking at risk from a different perspective, as a force for change and progress, if managed well. Demonstrate that risk is something we need to engage with emotionally as well as physically, if we want our risk management efforts to be successful. This purpose will be achieved through an entertaining and engaging presentation, using photos and case studies. The session will initiate interest to explore new ways of thinking about risk and generate discussion about the balance between people and systems. What is the right balance and why getting it right enhances the safety culture, while getting it wrong can impact on safety, business performance and sustainability.

The Bureau of the Mint of the United States Treasury maintains 13 ofEces for the purchase of gold-bullion, and this paper describes an investigation to establish the reasonable differences in the assay-results at the various institutions which may be commercially allowable in the settlements between them. Beginning with the comparative assay of proof-gold at the Philadelphia mint and the Utrecht mint, which shows 0.00002 as the closest agreement now possible, nine tables of comparative results, taken from the regular work of the service, are given..These tables begin with very fine gold, produced in an electrolytic refinery, showing close agreement in the assay-results, and follow through decreasing gold fineness and increasing amounts and complexity of base metals to very impure and complex bars produced at cyanide-mills, some of which give widely-varying results. Next is given a series of results on samples, prepared and sent out to various laboratories in the service, to test the influence of different metals and various combinations upon the agreement of the assay-results ; 11 samples were sent out and each one was assayed from 44 to 71 times, making a total of 623 assays. To these ire added 107 assays of identical samples of coin-gold. Fair market value, in the legal sense , is the price which a prudent and knowledgeable buyer and a prudent and knowledgeable seller, acting without constraint or compulsion , will agree upon to exchange an asset. In the ordinary commercial or engineering usage, the term may imply simply the market value or a reasonable and equitable price. The engineer evaluator who is called upon to express an opinion about the fair market value of an asset may be able to base his estimate on the sale price of similar assets or on the market values of stock. Frequently such indicators of value are not available and the evaluator must devise other means of appraisal. Mineral resource properties may be thought of as having value by virtue of the existing or potential ability to produce at a profit. Conventional procedures permit the computation of the present value of future revenues having due regard for the time value of money and the risks attendant upon the realization of the venture. Such computations have gained wide acceptance as a basis for the estimation of fair market value.

It is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes in a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most of industrial products are made through the processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. In this paper, some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes are introduced. The treatment of solid wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse water, etching solution and pickling solution are accomplished using solvent extraction technique.

"The Keystone porphyry molybdenum deposit, located in southcentral British Columbia, is hosted by intrusive rocks of the Cretaceous Mount Lytton batholith and the early Tertiary Keystone quartz diorite stock. The molybdenite mineralization is associated with rhyolite porphyry dikes flanking a large 1300 m by 2100 m breccia complex. Recognition of the potential for the buried molybdenum porphyry system was based on quartz-molybdenite vein fragments within the hydrothermal breccias.The full extent of the molybdenum mineralization is not known. The few deep drill holes along one comer of the breccia complex defines strong metal zoning of molybdenum and associated elements of F, Mn, Zn, Pb, Au, Ag, Fe and W about the molybdenum stockwork mineralization that may be useful for guiding additional exploration. The best mineralization occurred near the base of the deepest drill hole with 0.114% Mo in rhyolite porphyry near the edge of the breccia pipe at a depth of 1350 m.The exploration history of the deposit has been complex, focussing on both porphyry-style mineralization and precious metal veins and stockworks on the periphery of the porphyry system. Exploration to date has defined an attractive porphyry molybdenum system with uneconomic grades at great depth; however, there remains significant potential to define economic mineralization elsewhere in the Keystone porphyry system and adjoining occu""ences."

THE year 1939 has seen the iron and steel industry driving for efficiency with unabated zeal. "Efficiency" is here used in the sense of enabling the customer to do more with less, either supplying him with more economically priced steels or with higher priced steels that will do a job more economically. The plain carbon steels have been improved tremendously in quality be- cause of recent control tests. All steel companies have been urged to hold to .closer chemical control, closer standards, soundness, and more control on grain size, and now attention is being directed to closer control of hardening properties. Better control of open- hearth operations undoubtedly will result in an increase in the application of special carbon steel. Further, with a better understanding of quenching, the present trend to study the quenching of this class of steels will be ex- tended. These steels will then be used for purposes to which they are best suited. Utilization of special carbon bars and large shapes seems to be developing less slowly than special car- bon in the form of strip. There are many reasons for this and the future development of this trend will be important. Continued development of the manufacture of parts from strip and sheet to replace forgings, and of formed; structural members such as channels or welded pipe, is notable. Special carbon sheets with nonaging properties have been produced during the year; they maintain a higher degree of ductility over a longer time and are less sensitive to the changes which took place in the former product when stocked.

MANY fields have been zoned by nature with shales and intermediate waters between oil zones. Limitations thus imposed have been the basis on which the field was developed. In contrast thereto, in the Ventura Avenue Field, nature proved more generous. Always expecting to find such similar limitations, operators drilled deeper and deeper into the oil zone without finding any distinctive shale bodies other that the Gosnell shale and only one intermediate water, which became the point below which the final water shut-off of each well was made. Thus, on top of the structure, about 3300 ft. of oil-bearing zone has been penetrated below this intermediate w9ter-a distance of 4000 ft. below the Gosnell shale. At first it seemed that the greater the penetration in the zone, the better the well. The error of this assumption became evident

The literature on radium is already voluminous, but mcuh of it is too technical to be intelligible to the average reader, and there is no single publication that covers certain economic features of the radium industry. As a result of the renewed interest in the possibilities of domestic carnotite deposits a number of requests have been made to the Bureau of Mines for information, more particularly with reference to the business aspects of the industry. In order to meet this apparent need, the present paper has been prepared from material available in the files of the bureau. The technical data are compiled from various sources and are believed to be reasonably dependable, but the attempt has been not so much to achieve meticulous scientific accuracy as to brim; together facts of industrial significance and popular interest. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Radium is a brilliant white metal that melts sharply at about 700°C. and volatilizes appreciably at that temperature. With an estimated specific gravity of nearly 6.0, it is more than twice as heavy as aluminum and 25 per cent lighter than irons. Although it has been isolated in its metallic state, it is not used in that form, partly because it tarnishes rapidly even in dry air (forming a nitride), partly because of the greater expense of reducing it to metal, and partly because of the difficulty of dealing with such minute quantities of material. It is used always in the form of its compounds, the most important of which from the vie point of utilization are the bromide, chloride, and sulphate.
