The subsidence monitoring program at the Old Ben No. 24 Mine was planned in 1976 as part of the on- going demonstration of longwall mining. The construction and installation of the network of surface subsidence monuments was started in Play of 1976 and completed four weeks later after which an initial reference survey was made of all surface monuments. Mining of the first longwall panel started in September of 1976 and was completed in May of 1977. Mining of the second panel started in August of 1977 and is continuing at this time. The Automatic Data Acquisition System (ADAS), which is the subject of this paper, was installed over the second panel on March 29, 1978 near the panel center (Figure 1) and approximately 104 meters (370 feet) in front of the face position at that time. Mine No. 24 is located approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) Northwest of Benton, Franklin County, Illinois. Coal is being mined from the Illinois (Herrin) No. 6 seam which is at a depth of about 189 meters (620 feet) at the site. The Herrin No. 6 is up to 2.7 meters (9 feet) thick in the mine but a constant thickness of 2.1 meters (7 feet) is being mined by the demonstration longwall with both roof and floor coal being left for stability. Although the seam is flat laying at the mine, it dips north- ward regionally. Topographically, the surface over the demonstration panels is essentially flat and low laying with several areas of standing water. The Rend Lake Dam (United States Army Corps of Engineers) is about 305 meters (1000 feet) north of the demonstration site.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies to evaluate dust control technologies on deep cut continuous mining sections. These surveys have been conducted in different mines using various mining methods, face ventilation systems and dust control systems. The surveys typically consist of respirable dust sampling combined with a time study of mining activities. Measurements of dust control and operational parameters are also made. Critical elements identified for controlling respirable dust in deep cut mining systems include controlling intake dust, dust collector capacity, face ventilation quantities and velocities, positioning of workers, work practices and selection of equipment. This paper discusses how the dust surveys are conducted in deep cut mining sections and how these surveys are used to identify specific dust generating sources.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. Coal pretreatment at the mine could eliminate all solids fuel handling

Rising electricity costs in South Africa have resulted in a need for optimized compressed-air networks in the mining environment. As a result, the financial benefit of air receivers needs to be reconsidered along with the economic dispatch strategy. This study investigates the use of an evolutionary algorithm in the mining industry to determine the potential financial benefit for various-sized air receivers, as well as their dispatch strategy. A genetic algorithm was selected due to the improved solution reliability and accuracy compared to other optimization techniques. This study indicates that a genetic algorithm can be used to determine the optimal dispatch of compressed air in the deep-level mining industry. Further, this study indicates that air receivers are financially viable in the mining industry and can be used to reduce operating costs, improving profitability.

The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). With the inauguration of the open pit operation in Bagdad, plans were formulated for a large scale leaching operation. Dump stockpiling was started almost immediately, but actual production was not initiated until the spring of 1961. Like all neophytes, we started something about which, on a commercial scale, we knew next to nothing, either dump preparation or leach procedure, and as a consequence, we are still paying the piper. True, we had been through an extensive laboratory pilot program, but it soon became apparent that there was considerably more to increasing solution volumes than simple multiplication. Had we initially possessed our present acumen, the Cyprus Bagdad plant could be operated more efficiently and at a better profit. During the past several years, the art of dump leaching of copper has improved in many ways, primarily because of the application of scientific principles gleaned from general mining practice. Rigid pH control and the use of atomic absorption techniques for rapid," accurate assaying have probably played a leading role in this respect, although we cannot overlook the other sophisticated electronic controls lending improvement to acid addition and pumping, better piping materials, and lastly, the more efficient use of our pregnant liquors. Thin too, the years of experience have given us a greater understanding of dump behavior in general; and, we can, to a greater extent, measure, predict, and avoid some of the idiosyncrasies inherent in every dump. However, it is my firm belief that we will still be confronted with unexplainable dump behavior as long as we are involved in leaching. We have found our dump to be a wonderful money bank, but one that is capable of yielding a wildly fluctuating profit.

Bauxite can be regarded as a mixture of hydrated aluminium oxides the predominant constituent - and oxides of iron and titanium, silica and silicates. Heterogeneous and non-crystaline, most bauxites vary in average composition from one deposit to another both in terns of impurities as well as the proportion of Gibbsita and the Monohydrates Diaspore and Boehmite. Iron levels (as Fe2O3) can vary from less than 1% to as high as 30% with the alumina content ranging from 40 to 6o%,. Gore than 90% of all bauxite mined in Guyana is used as feed for the - production of refractory grade calcined bauxite. There are -however, several speciality grades used in various industrial applications and these are characterised by the quality of the bauxite in particular ;,with regards to iron and silica levels which generally have to be low. The main speciality grades are designated Refractory, Abrasive and Chemical. Bauxitte is also used in the production of nigh alumina cements,, activated bauxite end in the manufacture of electrical insulators.

Two pressure balancing chambers were constructed at a Colorado coal mine to reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion. Each chamber was established by installing a Kennedy stopping at about 10 ft (3 m) in front of an isolation seal, and equipped with two safety doors, a nitrogen injection system, and a set of environmental monitors. Several pressure balancing tests for different ventilation conditions were conducted in these chambers. During each test, pressurized nitrogen was injected into the chamber and the pressure differentials across the stoppings and seals monitored. This study presents a summary of the results achieved, lessons learned, and the basic requirements to operate a pressure chamber effectively.

The action has been studied of three types of reagents used as intensifiers in grinding copper-molybdenum, sulphide-sheelite, polymetallic and other types of ores, namely N-donor, dispersant, and surface-acting agents. It has been proved that, depending on the type of ore treated, the C (N-donor) and C-170 (dispersant) reagents increase the yield of the principal size fraction of 0.074mm by 8-16% (relative). Consequently, the specific mill capacity improves by 13-21 %. The C and C-170 reagents activate the subsequent flotation stage and are thus beneficial to the mineral recovery. The surface-acting reagents affect the mineral grinding process to a lesser extent. The intensifying action of the reagents is attributed to the effective crushing energy decrease (lower crack-resistance factor) or else to the slime-dispersing effect of the reagents. The pilot-plant test results for the C reagents are given. Both C and C170 reagents are commercially produced and recommended for use at a number of concentrators in Russia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.

Unlike most ore minerals, the raw materials for lightweight-aggregate, such as clays and shales are abundant everywhere. In view of this ample choice, what are the reasons for many plant failures attributed to the raw material? How can we arrive at a proper choice of the raw material, the proper processing method for the chosen material, predict its behaviour in a plant and the properties of the final product? Determine the uniformity of the raw material and possible harmful impurities? One basic choice is sintered versus kiln-fired aggregate. It will be based on market preferences and availability of the raw material. Almost in every case a good raw material for one process is poison for the other.

Chemical dewatering aids for mineral slurries generally fall into two classes: surfactants and flocculants, which can be used separately or together. Current industrial use of both types of reagents is summarized for sulfide and non-metallic minerals, as well as uranium and gold leach residues and coal refuse. "Durability design for underground structures is an increasing focus of designers and owners in the underground construction industry. Many owners have expanded their requirements for durability design, with specific requirements for structure lifecycle and designer certification of structural durability. This paper describes current trends and best practices including: defining the underground structure lifecycle, historically durable underground structures, design methods for underground structure durability built of reinforced concrete, and durability of materials. Criteria to be used for defining end of structure life and owner’s maintenance responsibilities are crucial to lifecycle contract requirements. Current practices of several major owners are presented. Design methods are presented including United States code requirements. Current best practices for enhancing the durability of materials used in underground construction are discussed including: low permeability concrete, steel reinforcement concrete cover, the use of steel fiber, and testing for verification. INTRODUCTION Durability design is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of good design practice. Infrastructure owners recognize that to serve the public interest, constructed facilities must be lasting and durable. The public understands that structures with limited service life result in increased costs and add to their daily inconvenience with frequent repair and reconstruction. Engineers are increasingly asking not only is the structure strong enough but will it last for generations. Durability design requirements are no longer just adherence to some accepted practices, but are based on analytical approaches, with results that can challenge our beliefs in what construction materials and details result in a durable structure. This paper describes current industry requirements and practices for durability design of underground structures, and offers some suggestions regarding future trends and developments. SERVICE LIFE DEFINITION The service life of a structure is the sum of the time to onset of deterioration, called initiation period (ti), and the subsequent time period of deterioration ending when the structure is no longer functional, called propagation period (tp). Figure 1 shows a conceptual service life diagram. These time periods can be substantially affected by the level of maintenance performed during the life of the structure."

The demand for good white minerals for many industries including paint and plastics have made it necessary to import high grade industrial minerals from various parts of the world. Some of the calcium carbonate, barite and talc minerals are from China, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. These materials can be processed by custom processors. The custom processor can provide a service to the Industrial Mineral owner. The imported materials can arrive in various feed sizes from lumps (3"-6") down to 325 mesh. The materials can also be in various size shipments or container loads. The economics for importing should be investigated thoroughly. The two factors just mentioned can influence the quantity of material to be processed. These two factors can also influence the total cost for each end product.

This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the West Virginia University Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30-ft x 70 -ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18-in., variable-speed, axial flow fans; an 18-in. -diam, fiberglass tubing; associated fittings for arranging networks; and a picot-tube measuring and data-acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into non-planar networks of two or three fans. The setup is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points and fan stall for multiple fan ventilation systems.

The consumption of industrial minerals, like most other commodities produced from the earth, depends on the demand for the goods and services that use these materials. Minerals are not generally used directly by final consumers (table salt is a notable exception) but instead are used to either make products that are then purchased by customers, or the minerals are used to make industrial products that eventually contribute towards producing other goods and services. Therefore the demand for industrial minerals in most uses is derived from the ultimate demand for goods and services by consumers. The problem for producers of industrial minerals is that the demand for their mineral product fluctuates greatly in response to the changes in the production of goods and services over the course of the business cycle. In this respect, the producers of industrial mineral are innocent victims, subject to market fluctuations outside of their control. Because the demand for most minerals depends on the demand for the product and because minerals typically make up a minor portion of the costs of producing the product, changes in the price of the mineral often do not influence demand for it to a significant degree in the short run. This is described as a very low price elasticity of demand, as shown by the steep slope of the hypothetical demand curve in Figure 1. This demand curve shows that changing the price of the mineral does not alter the quantity demanded very much, but shifts in the demand curve will be the important determinant of the quantity of the mine.ra1 that is sold. The shifts are caused by the changing demand for the products using the mineral over the course of the business cycle.

Rössing Uranium Limited has operated since 1976 a large open pit uranium mine and extraction plant at a remote site in the Namib desert, South West Africa/Namibia. The geology (Berning, I., et al. Economy Geology) and the technical aspects concerning mining, grade control and metallurgy have previously been described (Rössing Uranium, Mining Magazin and Whyllie, R.J.M. "Rössing Uranium reaches rated production", World Mining). The improvement of leach 'extraction has been reported in 1984 (Kesler, S.B. et. al. "Uranium extraction at Rössing") and the installation of a central process control system has been described (Kesler, S.B. et al. "The introduction of a central process system at Rössing"). At the beginning of 1983 a decision was made to develop a computer system for metallurgical plant optimisation which included mass and volumetric balances, analytical assays for up to 5 chemical elements and the costs for the major consumables. Within 10 months this computer system was developed and implemented. A large number of test runs were made and computer studies were undertaken. The metallurgical division now has a scientific tool for production; planning for actual comparison with plant results and for strategic investigations and decision making.
