Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular S02 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, i.e., pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and violarite, have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: pyrrhotite solid solution (FeO.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu 0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic, ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinet crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag. Deposition of calcium carbonate scale on activated carbon in the Pinson Mining mill carbon column circuit was causing erratic gold recovery rate, long acid wash time, high carbon attrition and long strip times. Continuous addition of a blended antiscalant into the mill thickener overflow at 8 ppm reduced the average carbon acid wash weight loss from approximately 10% to < 2%. Cleaner carbon improved the gold loading rate in the mill column. The loading on Column I was increased to 175-225 oz/ton carbon from 125-150 oz/ton for a two-day carbon advance cycle. The higher loading capability has given Pinson more flexibility and better control of gold flow through their carbon adsorption, stripping and electrowin­ning processes. Preventing calcium carbonate build-up on activated carbon with this antiscalant reduced acid wash batch time. This enabled Pinson to acid wash and regenerate every batch of stripped carbon for all the adsorption circuits. Shorter strip times have also resulted from the lowering of the calcium carbonate scale level in the loaded carbon. Carbon consumption has been reduced and is now averaging 0.046 lb/ton ore for the first six months of 1990 compared to 0.072 and 0.083 lb/ton respectively in 1989 and 1988.

An expert process operation advisor system can increase plant efficiency, even in a complex, natural environment where not all elements of the production process can be measured directly. This system, develaped and tested in a Frasch process sulphur mine, monitors key process variables with extended qualitative pattern processing and provides on-line advise to the operators of sulphur production wells. An expert system framework captured common sense rules generated from years of experience obtained in the operation of a sulphur well monitoring system. The existent operating procedures were enhanced by process analysis using a qualitative modeling approach which provided extended rules for on-line classification of a well operational status and an expert alarm system. The methodology for development and implementation of the process advisor is presented in this report. Qualitative process modeling, statistical process control and heuristics were incorpomted into the process advisor resulting in a more efficient use of heat, an extended well operational life and the resulting cost savings. The computer process advisor also allowed the operator to concentrate his attention on the weak wells or wells in trouble. A process management system improved plant operation by automatically storing well data into a commercial database for operator validation. The enhanced relational data base system provided valuable and timely information for planning and decision making. The synergistic combination of on-line process analysis tools, expert control systems and database technology is shown to facilitate the flow of materials, energy and infomation in a modern plant.

Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.

The influence of reagents dosage, pH, temperature, and particle size on the kinetics of apatite flotation response from magnetite has been investigated. The first-order models characterizing rectangular distribution and fast and slow distributions (F-S model) of floatabilities gave an excellent fit to the results of apatite flotation when compared to other models. However, the latter model is found to be better than the former in the goodness of fit and also in the description of flotation performance. The kinetic parameters in the F-S model are estimated by using a nonlinear least squares fitting program. The ratio of fast and slow rate constants is observed to be an important parameter for identifying the optimum levels of the variables and to outline the selectivity between apatite and magnetite. The influence of collector dosage is realized from the model parameters by relating it to the fraction of slow- floating particles. An attempt has been made to describe the apatite flotation behavior with the determined model parameters.

When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.

The City of Phoenix, Arizona designed a 7.2 km (4.5 mi) long water transmission main from the South Mountain Reservoir to the Ahwatukee Foothills Reservoir to address the growing demand for drinking water in the southeast valley. The pipeline design called for a bored tunnel in a very environmentally sensitive area. The Reach3B contract included an 2.44 m (8 ft) diameter TBM excavated tunnel, 1,847 m(6,060 ft) in length. The geotechnical investigation revealed that the tunnel would likely pass through zones of loose to moderately cemented soils (caliche). The primary tunnel support would consist of rock bolts, circular steel ribs, hard wood lagging, and mine straps. A TBM that could handle the ground conditions and allow for efficient ground support installation was required. This paper describes the construction of a small diameter rock tunnel in challenging ground conditions.

During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

The mechanism of cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite was studied in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by AES and XPS, and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by micro-flotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

A wide variety of subsidence prediction methods exist. They can be classified into empirical methods and mechanistic models. The empirical methods include profile functions and influence functions (Brzuner, 1973a,b; Kratzsch, 1974; Berry, 1978; Hood et al., 1981), the two empirical approaches of most practical value, if only be- cause they are readily programmed on calculators or computers. The profile functions have the advantage that they allow for ready determination of the necessary empirical parameters from field observations. They have the disadvantage of being restricted to subsidence calculations at a very limited number of points or lines above very simple (rectangular) mine geometries. This reduces greatly their practical applicability for damage predictions, which usually require estimates of strains, slopes or curvatures at structures that have arbitrary position and orientation with respect to planned mine excavations. Influence functions can be used to calculate subsidence at any point near an excavation of any in- seam outline. The main difficulty associated with empirical influence functions is the lack of uniqueness in the relation between subsidence and its cause, the convergence distribution over a mined excavation and its immediate surroundings. A secondary practical difficulty is the need for fairly arbitrary adjustments near the excavation edges, usually in the form of compensation zones (e.g. Brsuner, 1973; Hood et al., 1981). Determination of the appropriate empirical constants in influence functions is facilitated greatly when a direct mathematical connection exists between influence and profile function (several examples are given by Brauner, 1973 and by Hood et al., 1981), so that field data can be used to determine the parameters through backfitting of the profile functions, which is considerably simpler and more direct than backfitting of influence functions.

Silver is an economically important component of many complex, massive sulfide ores. Current beneficiation for these ores is almost entirely by flotation. Silver recovery often is low, but little is known about the flotation behavior of the silver-bearing minerals. Floatability studies were conducted using silver-bearing tetrahedrite and lead-zinc ore. The effects of xanthate collector concentration, conditioning time, potentiostatic control of the mineral potential, and pH on mineral floatability were evaluated. The floatability of the silver-bearing minerals was shown to depend on collector concentration and mineral potential. The effect of controlling mineral potential during the flotation process is discussed.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions has been studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was also developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a mixed mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion, but the film diffusion had a major contribution to the overall rate. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental baseline studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months, and the first gold bar was poured in March of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitoring program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine&apos;s twenty year life. Nonmined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

The high temperature (180-200 OC ) pressure oxidation (02 - HzSO4) process for the recovery of gold from refractory concentrates (FeS2/FeA8S) is simulated with the aid of a computer model. The model centers on the continuous operation of a multi-stage horizontal autoclave. In particular the effects of key process parameters controlling the autogenous operation of the autoclave are critically examined. The building elements of the model are (i) the continuous particle size distribution function of the concentrate, (ii) the residence time distribution function of the slurry and (iii) the shrinking core kinetics. Conversion is calculated on the basis of the segregated flow model. For the calculation of the particle size distribution at the exit of each compartment the population balance model is employed. The effects of feed rate, feed preheating, cooling, autoclave configuration and rate limiting regime (chemical reaction vs. gas-liquid mass transfer) on the autogenous steady state operation are discussed. Finally optimum reactor design and operation criteria are indicated.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) multiple seam interaction between web and barrier pillars in superjacent mines, ii) subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and mines, iii) pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, iv) the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist.

The design-build contract was awarded to Hampton Roads Connector Partners with HDR and Mott MacDonald retained as lead designers in a Design Joint Venture. This paper will highlight some of the e challenges related to the design of the twin bored tunnels from spaceproong, tunnel enabling wors, segmental lining design and durability considerations.

Sulphur deposits occur within the upper Salado and Rustler gypsum beds. The formation of a sulphur ore deposit requires large quantities of oil and /or gas, which must find a permeable pathway into the gypsum beds. The Permian beds weathered for 90 million years in an arid environment prior to the advent of a more humid climate at the beginning of the Cretaceous Period. The first Cretaceous rivers enlarged the sinkholes and caverns of the Karstified Permian terrain and deposited coarse conglomerates and sands into the subsurface gypsum beds. The resulting network of caverns and sinkholes, filled with permeable sediments, permitted the free flow of hydrocarbons through gypsum. All sinkholes and caverns infilled with Cretaceous sediments that have penetrated beds of gypsum are associated with sulphur deposits. The Castile gypsum lies directly upon the oil bearing Bell Canyon formation. Sinkholes and caverns filled with Cretaceous sediments occur in the lower Castile. Biogenic calcite and sulphur are adjacent to these sediments. However, faults assume the major role in generating the initial permeability, allowing hydrocarbons to penetrate the lower Castile gypsum. The largest faults are associated with biogenic calcite and sulphur for a distance of 250 meters up from the bottom of the Castile gypsum. It is apparent that two dynamic geological processes are generating permeability within the gypsum beds: (1) the Cretaceous sands decending with difficulty into gypsum and (2) the faults creating permeability in the lower Castile but losing energy through soft bed deformation in the overlying gypsum. Both of these sulphur ore controls are mappable, but another large sulphur deposit of the magnitude of the Culberson Sulphur Mine has yet to be discovered. SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.
