(Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

Geostatistical modelling aims at providing unbiased estimates of the grades of elements of economic interest in mining operations, and assessing the associated uncertainty in these resources and reserves. Conventional practice consists of using the data as error-free values and performing the typical steps of data analysis - domaining, semivariogram analysis, and estimation/simulation. However, in many mature deposits, information comes from different drilling campaigns that were sometimes completed decades ago, when little or no quality assurance and quality control (QA/AC) procedures were available. Although this legacy data may have significant sampling errors, it provides valuable information and should be combined with more recent data that has been subject to strict QA/QC procedures. In this paper we show that ignoring the errors associated with sample data considerably underestimates the uncertainty (and consequently the economic risk) associated with a mining project. We also provide a methodology to combine data with different sampling errors, thus preserving the relevant global and local statistics. The method consists of constructing consistent simulated sets of values at the sample locations, in order to reproduce the error of each drilling campaign and the spatial correlation of the grades. It is based on a Gibbs sampler, where at every sample location, the actual sample value (with error) is removed and a conditional distribution is calculated from simulated values at nearby sample locations. A value is drawn from that distribution and kept only if it satisfies some statistical requirements-specifically, the global relative error and local means and variances must be reproduced. All sample locations are visited and simulated sample values are generated iteratively, until the required statistics are satisfactorily attained over all sample locations. This generates one realization of possible sample values, respecting the fact that the actual samples are known to carry an error given by the global relative error. Multiple realizations of simulated sample values can be obtained by repeating the procedure. At the end of this procedure, at every sample location a set of simulated sample values is available that accounts for the imprecision of the information. Furthermore, within each realization, the simulated sample values are consistent with each other, reproducing the spatial continuity and local statistics. These simulated sets of sample values can then be used as input to conventional simulation on a full grid to assess the uncertainty in the final resources over large volumes. The methodology is presented and demonstrated using a synthetic data-set for clarity.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

There were three distinct periods in the career of Laurie Bushel, each enlivened by some special interests or achievements.

Resin bolting in South Africa has been developed and refined in underground coal mines (i.e., soft rock) since the late 1940s. The extension of resin bolting to hard rock mines started in 2003 and has required significant adaptations, challenging the status quo from both a supplier and applicator perspective. As far as resin bolting is concerned, the most affected aspect in coal mining and hard rock mining environments, is the rock drills or machinery used for installation. Hard rock mines mostly use hand-held airlegs with limited thrust, low torque, and rotation speed, relative to coal mine mechanised bolters. Resin bolt development for hard rock mines was, and still is today, predominantly focussed on compensating for the ‘shortfalls’ of using hand-held airlegs. At face value, hydro-powered rock drills, which are more powerful than traditional handheld equipment, provided hard rock mines with a means to attain more consistent and reliable resin bolt installations. This paper assesses the quality and performance of hydro-powered resin bolting at an intermediate to deep level platinum mine in South Africa and its potential contribution to rock-related instabilities when applied erroneously. The findings of this paper necessitate a revision of current quality control and quality assurance measures related to resin bolting for underground support.

The application of the Monte Carlo technique to production planning and everyday economic decisionmaking in mine production management is demonstrated. The logic is detailed using an example of underground production with continuous miners (CMs) and truck haulage. It is argued that availability of equipment and personnel are the predominant variables influencing mine output and productivity and that those availabilities may be well represented by binomial probability distributions. The probabilistic model is implemented in a standard Excel® spreadsheet with Palisade’s @Risk add-on to facilitate simulations. Starting from model calibration against data obtained from a mine’s annual reports, some general interdependencies of availability, utilization, productivity, and costs of production processes are outlined. Finally, several possible options and their consequences as regards production improvements are explored.

Methods of research and control of the intensity of gas inflow to undersoil layers, after the mines were abandoned are presented in the paper. Gas migration causes them to penetrate to lower storeys of buildings and earthen structures being a menace to people's health and life. The results of measurements of gas concentration in undersoil layers, gas emission to atmosphere and their accumulation in buildings on the territory of closed down mines are presented.

Finsch Mine is a Kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface-mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a Modified Blast Hole Open Stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1,2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a Block Cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a mining method to mine the Block 5 ore body started in 1991 and in 2006 Inclined Caving was identified as being a technically feasible method. This report aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 Pre-Feasibility Team as well as discussing the technical challenges encountered during this process.

The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

Silicon Smelters consumes more than 80000 t/a of wood-derived charcoal as carbonaceous reductant in the production of silicon metal. More than 10% of this material is discarded as fines (<6 mm) generated due to abrasion during processing. Charcoal fine residues (<650 μm) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) binder were used in this study to produce mechanically strong charcoal briquettes for metallurgical application as carbonaceous reductant. The PVA binder was added in mass percentages of 1, 3, and 5 wt% to the charcoal fines. The compressive strength, abrasion resistance index (ARI), drop shatter resistance (SRI), and water resistance index (WRI) were measured as functions of curing for up to 7 days under atmospheric conditions, and the results compared with metallurgical grade coarse charcoal. The ash content of the produced briquettes was found to be high (6.6–8.0%) compared with the coarse charcoal (1–3%). The 3 and 5 wt% PVA-bound briquettes were found to be the strongest, with compressive strengths of 40 and 115 kg/cm2 respectively, with WRI values of 75 and 73% respectively. The produced briquettes were found to have lower ARI and SRI values compared to the coarse charcoal. Future work should include beneficiation of the fine charcoal discards prior to briquetting, and an increase in binder addition to above 6 wt% to improve the ARI and SRIn.

The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. Mining operations are generally reluctant to install high-cost sampling systems at operations that have been functioning for many years. The principal objection to installing appropriate equipment to extract correct and representative samples in process flows is the time and costs involved. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) provides a structured framework for identifying and quantifying the errors and bias associated with any sampling event, but this may be insufficient to initiate substantial investment in correctly designed sampling equipment. Financial losses arising from substandard sampling installations are usually disregarded because the value-add from a good quality sampling solution is invisible, but the cost is quite obvious. Depending on the needs, a less-than-perfect or fit-for-purpose sampling solution may be acceptable, provided the magnitude of sampling errors is understood and the assay results are interpreted accordingly. Categorical levels of acceptable accuracy and precision can be established depending on the sampling position in the mining value chain and the nature of the decisions to be made. The objective benefits of proposed fit-for-purpose sampling solutions should be presented to relevant decision-makers in such a way that adverse subjective decisions are countered so that appropriate solutions are implemented. Practical examples of the benefits from motivating the implementation of fit for purpose sampling solutions at sampling facilities around the world are provided.

The quality and the production rate for the mining operations in the Garpenberg mine has been much improved due to a new system, that presents the latest exploratory and planning data for the driller at the moment he deploys the drill rig at the face. Other components in this improvement work are better planning procedure, large-scale production system with longer rounds and introduction of new drill rigs in the mine. The new Rig Control System (RCS) for the new series Atlas Copco Boomers L2C has made it possible to develop this system for production drilling in the Garpenberg mine. The ABC Regular has been extended with map navigation and drill plan generator. The driller will have the best estimate of the orebody in front of him and the best drill plan for that orebody. The customer’s specific system will also become a standard Atlas Copco product for the Boomer ABC drill rig family.

Optimization of panels, haulage fleet, and waiting area involves deterministic and low-fidelity methods and experiential knowledge. The process is challenging because coal recovery and operational capabilities must be considered in the solution. The approach in this manuscript comprises the development of an integrated stochastic simulation model of a coal room-and-pillar system that addresses these challenges. The decision variables evaluated are panel width, number of shuttle cars, and change-out time (COT). The results show that the mine should implement the shortest possible COT, decreasing the cycle time and thereby increasing productivity and continuous miner (CM) utilization. The highest productivity and CM utilization for a fleet size of three shuttle cars is found in the 15-entry panel width. For the evaluated fleet sizes, the 19-entry panel width is optimal for the four and five shuttle cars. Among the three variables studied, panel width and fleet size had the most significant effects (5% increase) on the CM productivity, cycle time, and utilization.

MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUSGENERALMEETING As the Minutes of the General Meeting held on June 18, 1969 had not yet been published in the Journal, the Chairman moved that their adoption and the discussion thereof be deferred to the next General Meeting. This motion was adopted unanimously. CHAIRMAN&apos;S ANNUAL REPORT 1968/69 At Mr Kirchner&apos;s request, Mr. R. C. J. Goode took the Chair during the presentation of the Chairman&apos;s Annual Report. (This report was published in the August 1969 issue of the Journal.) OFFICE BEARERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR THE YEAR 1969/70 The Chairman announced that the outgoing Committee had elected the following office bearers for the coming year: Chairman: N. A. Honnet; Vice-Chairman: J. N. Saunders; Immediate Past Chairman: J. G. Kirchner. The Chairman then read a letter from the scrutineers reporting that the following had been elected to the Committee: M. S. Grobler, W. R. Lawrie, L. O. W. Leimer, A. T. Lewis, R. S. Pearson, T. Zadkin. The Chairman thanked the scrutineers for their services, and congratulated Messrs Lawrie, Leimer and Zadkin on their re-election and Messrs Grobler, Lewis and Pearson on their election to the Committee. The Chairman announced that he had heard, with regret, that Mr. T. Zadkin would be leaving the O.F.S. at the end of August, 1969. Mr Zadkin had served on the Committee continuously since the inception of the O.F.S. Branch and records showed that he had only failed to attend three General Meetings in over nine years. The Chairman expressed the gratitude of the Branch for Mr Zadkin&apos;s invaluable services to the Institute, congratulated him on his well earned promotion and wished him well in his new position. INDUCTION OF CHAIRMAN The Chairman introduced Mr N. A. Honnet to the meeting by briefly outlining his past career and, after congratulating him on his election, called upon him to take the Chair. In congratulating the out-going Chairman on a very successful term of office, Mr Honnet said that due to the absence of many Committee Members for a large portion of the year Mr Kirchner had carried a heavy burden, and he moved a vote of thanks and appreciation for Mr Kirchner&apos;s efforts. This was carried unanimously. GENERAL BUSINESS There were no points raised under this heading. MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS The Chairman called on Mr W. R. Lawrie to give his talk on aspects of the Mining and Metallurgical Congress recently held in Britain. This presentation was illustrated with photographic slides and proved of great interest to Members. Mr D. D. Waterman proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Lawrie and the Chairman then asked Mr R. C. J. Goode to contribute to Mr Lawrie&apos;s address. Mr Goode thanked Mr Kirchner for his efforts during his very successful term of office and congratulated the in-coming Chairman and Vice-Chairman on their election. He then gave a brief talk on aspects of the Congress not dealt with in Mr Lawrie&apos;s address. These included the industry&apos;s requirements of graduates, the necessity of their rapid advancement and the desirability of sending such young men to attend future Congresses. Mr Goode announced that two symposiums will be sponsored by the Institute next year, one on Tunnelling and the other on Open Cast Workings.
