The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to identlfy and evaluate alternative binder materials for use in stabilizing and consolidating highly fractured roof along longwall faces and gate roads. The desirable characteristics of a stabilization material were defined, and an extensive search was conducted to find materials satisfying these characteristics. Of 20 materials originally scrutinized, 9 were chosen for laboratory analyses. The laboratory tests evaluated bond strength and tensile strength under both dry and wet conditions. An optimum material was not found. The laboratory analyses indicated two possible candidate materials for longwall stabilization: high-aluminous cement and two-component epoxy; however, the tensile strength of the high-aluminous cement was mediocre, and the epoxy cement is toxic, flammable, and fairly expensive. The potential market demand for an effective and economical stabilization macerial is discussed in the appendix.

During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples from three oxide manganese ores in the Columbia and Elberta Mining Districts, Tooelo and Juab Counties, Utah. To determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods: of concentration, extensive laboratory tests were made. The Wildcat property, one of those sampled, is 7 miles east of Fairfield, Tooele County, Utah. The ore is described as a replacement deposit and occurs along fracture and bedding planes of shale and limestone. Experimental work was done on a sample taken from a stockpile at the mouth of the shaft. The Wildcat manganese ore is intermediate in grade (25.7 percent manganese) and contains clay as the principal gangue constituent. A high-grade product was obtained with high recovery of Manganese by simple washing.

The Bureau of Mines investigated leaching of selected copper sulfide minerals and a composite of impure flotation concentrates at elevated temperatures and pressures with ammoniacal solutions. Copper 1 (tractions of 96 percent were obtained by leaching chalcopyrite at 75° C under oxidizing conditions for 60 minutes. An extraction of 99 percent of the copper contained in the composite concentrate was obtained by leaching the product for 90 minutes at 75° C. In tests of bornite, chalcocite, and covellite, 90 to 97 percent of the copper was extracted at 20° C provided an 8-hour reaction period was used. At 75° C essentially complete dissolution of the copper from these three minerals was accomplished in 60 minutes. Additions of ammonium sulfate to the leach solutions were required to obtain high-percentage extractions of the copper from bornite, chalcocite, and covellite. Although ammonium sulfate was not required when digesting chalcopyrite, copper extraction was enhanced and less free ammonia was required when ammonium sulfate was added to the leach pulps. The chemistry of leaching copper minerals was studied. It was C, termined that chalcocite altered to covellite as one step in the dissolution When leaching iron-bearing copper sulfides, hydrated iron oxide formed on the mineral surfaces, indicating that a diffusion process prevailed. No evidence of covellite was detected.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a trace helium analyzer for deter-mining helium-4 in the parts-per-billion range. The instrument is used for analyzing pure gases, laboratory-prepared standards, and atmospher-ic samples. Accuracy at the 95-pct confidence level in the 50-to 20,000-ppb range is within ±2 ppb or ±0.4 pct, whichever is greater. The minimum detectable helium-4 concentration is calculated to be 5 ppb. The analyzer consists of a modified helium leak-detector mass spec-trometer, a laboratory-built sample inlet system, and a liquid-nitrogen-cooled charcoal trap. A programmable integrator and event-control module make automatic operation possible. The portability of the analyzer allows it to be used in the field.

The Bureau of Mines stabilized 10 acres of windblown copper mill tailings at McGill, Nev., by a combination chemical-vegetative procedure. Legumes, winter wheat, wheat-grasses, and wild rye were seeded, and the area was subsequently sprayed with a resinous adhesive chemical to stabilize the sands until the vegetation could grow. During the year since treatment, the area has been well stabilized against wind erosion. The established vegetation appears to be capable of self-perpetuation and renewal without irrigation. The cost of stabilizing the area was $135.50 per acre.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a reconnaissance of the less accessible parts of the Beluga River coalfield in August 1957 to determine, if possible, which areas were most favorable for developing large reserves of coal suitable for open-pit mining. Several outcrops of subbituminous coal were observed within an area about 30 miles long and 3 miles wide; neither the length nor the width of the coal-bearing area was delineated by the examination. Coal beds 30 feet thick or more outcrop at two places, and beds 5 to 20 feet thick or more outcrop fairly abundantly along the Beluga River and its tributaries The coal measures appear to occur in a series of folds. The overburden comprises glacial gravels and poorly cemented sandstones and ranges from 20 to 400 feet in depth. Few partings were seen in any of the coal beds. Samples ranged in calorific value from 6,240 to 8,246 B. t. u. on an as-received basis. Adequate water is available for stripping by hydraulic methods.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). "A tabulation is printed below showing the accident record of the thirty-two mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., in Montana, for the years 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919 and 1920, with summation for the six years. The table gives the number of shifts worked by each mine with the serious plus fatal accident rate for each 10,000 shifts worked.It is seen that in a total of 16,460,767.5 shifts worked by employees of the company's mines during this six-year period, there were only 2,005 serious and fatal accidents and of these, 200 were fatalities, leaving 1,805 serious accidents (a serious accident being one in which 14 or more days' time are lost). This is at a rate of 9,120 shifts per serious accident and at a rate of 82,304 shifts per fatality. Hence, if 300 days be adopted as a year's work, there would be one fatality per 274.3 years of work in these mines and one serious accident for every 30.4 years work.According to Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 286, (Metal-mine accidents in U. S. in 1919, by W. W4 Adams), during the years 1916, 1917, 1918, and 1919, the metal mines of the United States worked a total of 210,548,640 shifts and had 39,705 serious accidents. During the same years, according to the following tabulation, the mines of the above-mentioned company worked 11,958,978 shifts and had a serious accident rate of 0.995 accidents per 10,000 shifts worked. If the metal mines of the United States, working these 210,548,640 shifts, had this company's serious accident rate of 0.995 serious accidents per 10,000 shifts, the total number of serious accidents would have been only 21,000 or the country's metal-mine serious accidents would have been reduced nearly one-half, and there would be 18,705 fewer serious accidents than actually occurred."

The optimum situation in sealing the soil with latex would be to locate the sealant at the depth where natural permeability is lowest, and to narrow distribution of the latex to a film. To ascertain how closely we were achieving these objectives it was necessary to devise a method to measure the concentration of latex in soil. A number of methods were explored and two were used in actual field tests. SBR latex tagged with c14 was prepared and used to determine the distribution of polymer in the soil. The latex was made by copolymerizing a mixture of radioactive and normal styrene with butadiene in bottles by conventional methods. Average particle size was 600 Å. Diluted aliquots had 1.40 microcuries radioactivity per gram of latex. Tagged latex was mixed with soil in a range of proportions from 0.01 to 0.25% by weight to develop a calibration curve. Analyses of soil in the laboratory and from the field were determined by comparison with this master curve. Styrene-containing polymers have a characteristic peak at 700 cm-1 but crosslinked SBR is not soluble in solvents normally used in infra-red spectroscopy, e.g., carbon disulfide. We developed a method for solubilizing the crosslinked polymer by stirring overnight at room temperature a soil sample in chloroform with t-butyl hydroperoxide and osmium tetroxide. The filtered chloroform residue was dried to constant weight, thoroughly mixed and pressed into a KBr pellet, and concentration was determined by measuring the absorption at 700 cm-1. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies hearing loss as a separate illness category. Hearing loss accounted for 11% of all illnesses in 2005 (U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006a). According to occupational data for coal mining provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2000 to 2005, operators that exceeded 100% noise dosage were from only seven types of machines: auger miners, bulldozers, continuous mining machines, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric) and trucks (Title 30 CFR Part 62, 2000-2005). Roof bolting machine operators rank second among all underground machine operators that exceed 100% noise dose. There are approximately 600 underground coal mines with 3,930 roof bolting machine operators (U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2005; U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics,

Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for coal preparation plants by state during 1990-1999. Table 28 also shows the risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by state. For coal preparation plants, 91 fires occurred in 1 1 states during 1990- 1999. Twenty-three of those fires caused 25 injuries (the yearly average was 9.1 fires and 2.5 injuries). Ten fires and eight injuries involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 24 1 x 10' hr (Irr = 0.02 l), and the LWD value was 198. Pennsylvania had the most fires (24 fires and 4 injuries), whereas West Virginia (22 fires and 7 injuries) and Kentucky (22 fires and 7 injuries) had the most fire injuries. Among these states, Kentucky had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.025). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires decreased during most of the periods (an increase is seen only during the last period). The number of fire injuries show a decrease followed by an increase during the periods, accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours throughout the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values (see table 29 and figure 11). Tables 30-35 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 12 shows the major variables during 1990-1999. Table 36 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

This paper, describing the mining methods and practice at No. 2 mine of the American Zino Co. of Tennessee at Mascot, Tenn., is one of a series of papers issued by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. Its purpose is to summarize methods recently put into practice whereby increased efficiency has been effected. These improvements have to do principally with mill-hole mining, slushing, contract labor, and bonuses. In general, this paper supplements earlier articles and brings them up to date. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating several types of low-grade uranium deposits. Projections indicate that an increased percentage of future production will be derived from such sources. One material studied was from the Coso Mountains of California; this material contained 0.04 to 0.12 percent U3O8. The deposit contains at least two distinct types of mineralization. The material representing the bulk of this deposit was amenable to acid leaching; 80 to 85 percent U308 extraction resulted from leaching with 20 to 40 pounds per ton of sulfuric acid. No oxidizing agent was required. This ore fraction could be treated by either agitation or percolation leaching. Uranium recovery and purification from the acid leach solution was accomplished using anion exchange followed by precipitation with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. The second type of mineral was very refractory to acid leaching; a maximum extraction of only 44 percent was obtained with sulfuric acid. Nitric and hydrochloric acids were ineffective also.

Condensate waters from the Bureau of Mines Synthane process for coal gasification have been investigated by mass spectrometric methods to determine the organic contaminants. Waters from the gasification of six coals were extracted with methylene chloride, yielding 0.6 to 2.4 weight-percent extractable material. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and low-voltage mass spectrometry, 60 to 80 percent of the extract was found to be phenolic. About 20 organic contaminants have been identified and are present in the condensate waters from each coal gasified. The relative distribution of contaminants in the condensate water was nearly the same for the six coals gasified under various conditions; phenolic compounds were the most abundant in all cases.

Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the "gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ultimate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficacy of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity show a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate of gas injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.

This paper dealing with the mining methods used in producing iron ore from an underground operation located in the central-western part of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The mine here discussed was laid out in accordance with a plan adapted to a rather unusual type of ore body, the nature of which is such that the mining method necessarily differs in certain respects from the method used at most of the mines in this district. A description of it may therefore be of interest.

"The health, comfort, and efficiency of men engaged in the mining industry may be impaired, in some instances very seriously, by abnormal physical conditions of the mine air or by variations in its composition. This is true in some of sheet metal mines of the West where high temperatures with varying humidities are encountered. Physiological studies have been made in some of these mines showing the effects of various temperatures end humidities. As it is difficult to carry out studies on many controlled temperatures, it was thought best to make the experiments in a laboratory and apply the results to the industry insofar as practicableThe effects of moderately high temperatures and humidities are more difficult to measure perhaps than the extreme conditions, but may be predisposing causes of fatigue, discomfort and disease, A cooperative study of the physioloical effects of heat and humidity is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Public Health Service cooperative with the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, in the Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa."

This paper describing the methods and costs of milling scheelite ore at the Silver Dike concentrator of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. In the Silver Dike mill tungsten ore which contains about 1 per cent of scheelite is treated at the maximum rate of 45 tens per 24 hours by tabling followed by magnetic separators to clean the table concentrates. Unusually high-grade concentrates are produced which average between 70 and 75 per cent of W03.
