Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Diesel-powered haulage equipment is used in this mine, and the electromagnetic noise environment it creates was measured to see how it differs from the environment created by electric-powered haulage equipment. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data are recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape and are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and in amplitude probability distribution plots.

Electrostatic separation depends on a number of electrical and mechanical properties such as conductance, contact potential, dielectric constant, and particle shape. In routine testing it is desirable that the application of each of those properties be investigated. The conductance property is best utilized in a separator having an ionic field, whereas the contact potential requires a separator with a pure static field. Dielectric constant and particle shape also influence the response in these two fields. There is no separator on the market that can be adjusted for all these requirements. The separator described in this paper is satisfactory for this purpose and is provided with a dielectric electrode, which permits formation of high-intensity static fields.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (sec. 303 (b)) stipulates that no working section of the mine shall contain more than 0.5 percent carbon dioxide and no harmful quantities of other noxious or poisonous gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The concentration of methane should at all times be maintained below one percent. A split of air returning from any working section shall contain no more than 1.5 percent of methane (sec. 303 (i) (2)) and air that has passed by an opening of any abandoned area shall not be used to ventilate any working place in the coal mine if such air contains more than 0.25 percent of methane (sec. 303 (j)). Methane concentration in the returns from the bleeder entries should not exceed 2.0 percent (sec. 303 (i) (3)), and no air that has passed through an opening which is inaccessible for examination shall be used to ventilate any active areas. While the air quantity requirements alone can easily be met, the governing condition in most mines is the dilution requirements for quality control. A sufficient quantity of air is required to render harmless and carry away noxious and respirable pollutants. In recent years, changes in coal extraction methods, rates of advance, location of available reserves, position of prominent methane sources and horizons, and geological sequences have contributed sig¬nificantly to alterations in rates, patterns and character of numerous methane emissions. Gas production of 10 to 15 million standard cubic feet per day is not uncommon from deep mines (Cervik, 1969). The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to selectively extract and recover chromic oxide (Cr203) from waste high-temperature shift catalysts that contain approximately 6 pct Cr and 62 pct Fe, both in oxide form. The Bureau's procedure consists of roasting the waste catalyst with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium carbonate (Na2C03) followed by water leaching. The chromium from the leach liquor was recovered utilizing an oxidation-reduction reaction with pH adjustment to form a hydrous chromic oxide (Crp3oXHp) precipitate. The roast-leach procedure produced chromium extractions greater than 89.7 pct, with product recovery in excess of 99 pct from the leach liquor. The costs of the NaOH and Na2C03 roast processes, including sizing and equipment-related recommendations, were determined by the Bureau's Office of Process Evaluation. The economic evaluation indicates that producing a Crp3 product, at the present time, is not competitive with the present-day cost of imported chromites. The estimated average operating cost for both processes was $5.44/1b of recovered Cr203 concentrate. However, this procedure offers a potential alternative to the disposal of this waste through landfiIl.

Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 3S0 meters (1150 ft.) and 488 meters (1600 ft.). The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broadband, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or F layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. As with the first article in the May-June issue, it is based on interviews with 214 miners conducted at 7 underground mines (?A? through ?G?) by researchers of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Center [Vaught et al. 1996].In the first article, the authors presented an overview of the study conducted by NIOSH on mine fire response preparedness and provided a general perspective on underground mine fires. In this article, we will describe miners? preparedness to evacuate a fire and their experience with incipient fires.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the relation-ship between geologic features and linears. Cleats, kettlebottoms, and roof rolls were mapped and superimposed on the linear plots for a coal mine in West Virginia. No clear relationships were evident. This may be due, in part, to the mining practice of leaving head coal, which obscures geologic features that may exist in the roof. Future studies should concentrate on mines where roof is extensively exposed.

The Federal Bureau of Mines performed laboratory tests using direct current to dewater and densify fine-grained coal sludge in order to alleviate disposal problems and lead to recovery of high energy value often present in this waste. The laboratory tests described in the main body of the report were performed on thickened underflow (no flucculant added) from a northern Appalachian coal preparation plant. Solids in this slurry was very fine with 65 percent of the particles less than 0.1 mm in diameter. A variety of application procedures tested is exemplified by a test in which a soupy slurry (55 percent dry-weight moisture content) was converted into a firm dense material with a 20-percent dry-weight moisture content. These results were achieved in 3 hours with current density of 3.7 amp/ft2 and a power expenditure of 35 kwhr/yd3. The treated material has an average heating value of 10,400 Btu/lb. Varying current density, electrode configuration, and placement depth makes application of the treatment flexible. Two other types of sludge were tested briefly--thickener underflow from a southern Appalachian coal preparation plant with flocculant added, and sludge from an acid mine drainage treatment plant. The underflow responded well to the treatment, but response of the sludge from the acid mine drainage treatment plant was poor.

"Numerous accidents are still being reported that have resulted from the delayed explosions in drill holes. Some of these accidents have boon due to retarded burning of the fuse, causing the charge to explode after the miners had returned to the face, but the majority have been caused by the minors drilling or picking into unexploded explosives, either in unexploded bolas or in broken rock. Although the industry has been cautioned by the Bureau of Mines, manufacturers of explosives, and other agencies regarding the care that is necessary in the handling of explosives, yet reports of these accidents are still being received and many of the accidents are fatal, They occur in spite of the best efforts of the mine officials and men, but many of those that have been reported could have been avoided if the following precautions had been observed:Misfires should not be approached even for the purpose of inspection until three hours have elapsed if fuse was used, and ten minutes if electric detonators or electric igniters were used. These are minimum recommendations. It would be preferable to allow a longer time, for fuses have been known to hang fire for twelve hours."

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in deter-mining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ ton of coal, for a total of 190 to 400 billion cubic feet of methane in this coalbed in Fayette County.

The Bureau of Milts studied repetitive batch electrowinning of molybdenum from molybdic oxide ) to determine the effects upon the electrolyte life, purity of metal product , and overall cell performance. The electrolyte consisted of 54.0 weight-percent sodium tetraborate (Na2B407), 23.6 weight-percent sodium chloride (NaC1), 14.9 weight-percent sodium fluoride (NaF), and 7.5 weight-percent Mo03. The feed materials were pure and technical-grade Mo03. Electrolysis was conducted at l,000° C in a graphite cell in an atmosphere of air and carbon oxides. Electrolyte degradation did not occur during repetitive winning of molybdenum from pure Mo03 in an 8-day (5,400-ampere-hour) period of operation. Electrowon metal contained <0.1 percent total impurities. The electrode configuration is a key factor in the direct conversion of technical-grade Mo03 to metal by repetitive cyclic electrolysis. The best configuration found was a cathodic crucible and a central anode. Metal purity of 99.8 percent and a current efficiency of 91 percent were maintained until the combined impurity buildup the electrolyte reached 4.7 percent silicon, l.0 percent aluminum, and 0.6 percent iron. One pound of molybdenum was produced per 1.5 pounds of solvent salts employed. About 25 percent of the initial NaCl and NaF contents of the electrolyte were lost owing to volatilization and crucible penetration.

A test program was conducted to determine the adequacy of molded case circuit breakers for dc electrical systems in coal mines. Mine electrical system parameters and the most severe operating conditions to be expected were determined. Tests of the interrupting capabilities of several molded case breakers were made under the worst conditions to be expected. Continuous and pulsed current carrying capability of the breakers was also investigated. Breakers from two different manufacturers passed all tests successfully. Based on the results of these tests, a set of guidelines for applying molded case breakers to dc systems has been prepared.

"INTRODUCTION There is urgent need for a satisfactory permissible multiple-shot blasting unit capable of firing 10 detonators in series and safe for use in underground mining where a. gas-ignition hazard may exist.. As there is at present no entirely satisfactory permissible unit of either the battery or generator type, tile described capacitor-battery type has been developed. Consideration of the Bureau of Nines approval schedule pertaining to the generator and magne to-type units and of the electrical characteristics of the unit described in this report indicate that this unit should meet Bureau of Mines permissible requirements.This report gives a detailed description of the design and operation and results of tests to determine safety of operation in gassy atmospheres.DESIGN AND OPERATION OF UNITOperation of the vibrator-type multiple-shot blasting unit is based upon utilization of the discharge energy from a capacitor charged to a given. voltage and having capacitance adequate to store enough energy to initiate 10 detonators in series. The primary source of energy is a 4-volt cap lamp battery such as is carried for illumination on the person of underground workers in nearly all mines. As this battery is already available and is recharged daily it is considered to be a reliable and convenient source of energy for a blasting unit. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the circuit for an improved unit, and figures 2 and 3 are views of the experimental unit. The battery potential is applied through a radio-type synchronous vibrator (8) to an 8-volt center-tapped primary of a small transformer (9) having a high-voltage center-tapped secondary. The vibrator introduces an alternating low-voltage potential into the primary and mechanically produces full-wave, rectified, pulsating, direct current from the secondary. A buffing condenser (11) across the secondary gives the proper wave form for long vibrator life: a resistor (12) its in series with this condenser across the total secondary to protect the transformer in case of• failure .of this capacitor. A voltage divider (10) with an adjustable slider permits accurate adjustment of the potential applied to the high-capacity firing condenser (5)."

The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation to study methods of utilizing red mud residues from production of alumina from bauxite. Pilot-plant tests were conducted using Jamaican and Surinam red muds. Both the carbon-lime-soda sinter process and electric-arc smelting with coke and limestone were employed to recover iron and alumina. Alumina recoveries of 85 to 90 percent were obtained by the sinter process; although iron recovery was about 80 percent, the magnetic product was finely divided and difficult to separate from the gangue. Smelting red muds in the electric-arc furnace produced a pig iron with 98-percent recovery of iron; up to 84 percent of the A1203 was recovered by leaching the calcium aluminate slag with Na2C03 solution. A titania product assaying 96 percent TiO2 was recovered from the nonmagnetic portion of Surinam red mud sinter by extraction with H2SO4. Leached calcium aluminate slags and brown mud (from the combination Bayer process) are possible raw materials in the manufacture of portland cement.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the metallothermic reduction of copper oxide as a function of temperature, reactant proportions, form of reductant, and gaseous environment, using iron and steel scrap reductants. The reaction proceeded rapidly with powdered iron at temperatures above 560° C, attaining over 95 percent copper metallization within 3 hours. The importance of inter-reactant contacts on the extent of the reaction was evident from the variable, but usually lesser, degree of metallization obtained with iron from tin cans and automobile steel scrap. Reduction decreased as the molar ratio of copper to iron increased between 1 and 3. The most favorable gaseous environment for the reaction was a static helium atmosphere containing about 0.6 percent water vapor. Ferrothermic extraction of copper from its oxides appears to be essentially a "solid-state cementation" process. While ordinary cementation processes must be preceded by leaching, the ferrothermic method avoids this generally slow step and also the water pollution caused by the leaching agents. Sulfidic copper concentrates could likewise be reduced with metallic iron following their complete oxidative roasting.

Physical beneficiation, leaching, and solvent extraction investigations were made to recover a high-grade thorium oxide product from Bald Mountain, Wyo., conglomerate. The monazite in the Bald Mountain deposit contains 8.8 percent Th02 and, therefore, is higher in thorium content than the usual domestic or foreign monazite. A sample of composited drill cuttings for the study contained 4.3 pounds of monazite per ton of are. The work showed that the monazite, although unusually fine grained and friable, could be concentrated by tabling and magnetic treatment to yield a product assaying 5.65 percent Th02 with a recovery of 61 percent of the thorium. Subsequent decomposition of the concentrate by treatment with sulfuric acid and solvent extraction of the resultant solution with a primary aliphatic amine yielded a thorium oxide product of 99-percent grade.

In small-scale blasting experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines laboratory, small charges were used to produce craters in blocks of concrete mortar. The results are compared with larger scale experiments of other research workers, and the comparison demonstrates the similarity of the results obtained and indicates that small-scale blasting should be a useful tool for predicting large-scale blasting effects. INTRODUCTION The purpose at this investigation was to conduct blasting experiments in mortar in the laboratory and then, by comparing the results with those from larger scale field blasts in rock to determine to what extent, if any, the laboratory results resemble those in the field. The work described herein was the initial phase of a project aimed at evaluating small-scale blasting as a tool for use in improving blasting techniques. It is evident from the stand-point of control and cost that small-scale blasting would be valuable in the study of rock fragmentation by blasting in mines and quarries, if the extrapolation is valid.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in the country and regional reports that comprise the five other sections of 1991 Minerals Yearbook-International Review, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition is due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of national mining and geological agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, appreciation is expressed to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies.
