This report is Volume III of a three volume final report dealing in general with the microseismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. The research presented in Volume III was undertaken as part of the overall microseismic project in an effort to relate, if possible, observed micro seismic activity with surface subsidence. A discussion in regard to the correlation of these factors is presented in Volume I of the final report. Field measurements of subsidence carried out at a Central Pennsylvania Coal Mine are described. Comparative analysis of actual field results with data obtained using empirical and finite element techniques Has undertaken. Comparison of field results with published National Coal Board data revealed marked differences. The influence of stronger rock beds overlying the coal seam in the current study was assumed to I be the main cause. Use of the general Gaussian profile resulted in a satisfactory fit to the field data provided the value of the maximum field subsidence was used in the analysis. In general, when low tensile strengths were assumed for the associated rocks, finite element techniques gave results which compared well with the observed field data. The study also indicated that at shallow depths there is a marked difference in subsidence over dip and rise sides of the coal-face, maximum subsidence being shifted more towards the dip side. Finally, time-dependent deformations were shown to be insignificant shortly after mining operations ceased.

"Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States killed 234 employees during January 1924, according to reports from State mine inspectors to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, Included in the number of fatalities are 68 deaths caused by two explosions during the month, one explosion occurring in a mine at Johnson City, Ill., and causing 32 deaths, and the other in a mine at Shanktown, Pa., and causing 36 deaths. The fatality rate for the month was 3.94 per million tons, based on a production of 59,435,000 tons of coals In January 1923 the fatality rate was 3.52, based on 206 deaths and an output of 58,458,000 tons.Bituminous mines in all States reported 202 fatal accidents, the production being 51,170,000 tons., and the fatality rate being 3.92, as compared with 3.28 for January last year, For the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, the reports covered 32 fatalities, which, on the month's output of 7,955,000 tons, indicated a fatality rate of 4.02 per million tons, as against 4.89 for January 1923.As compared with January 1923, the reports for January of the present year indicated lower fatality rates per million tons for all of the main causes of accidents except explosions. For falls of roof and coal, the fatality rate per million tons declined from 1.85 in January 1923 to 1,68 in January 1924; for haulage accidents the rate declined from 0.62 to 0.42; for explosives, from 0.19 to 0.12; for electricity, from 0.12 to 0.07. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a mass spectrometer method for determining helium in the parts-per-million to 10% range to an accuracy of ± 1%. The method employs a mass spectrometer, an inlet system utilizing a chromatographic gas-sampling valve, and an activated coconut charcoal trap cooled with liquid nitrogen. Gravimetrically prepared standards of helium in nitrogen were used to demonstrate the linearity of the method over the concentration range of 10 ppm to 10.66% helium.

The postwar demand for insulating material such as mineral wool, in-creased in proportion to the rapid construction of new buildings, placing an enormous burden on the existing mineral-wool industry both in known sources of raw materials and in available plant facilities. In view of the increased demand on the industry, the Bureau of Mines in its Mississippi Valley Experiment Station" Rolla, Mo., undertook an investigation to aid the industry by establishing resources of raw materials through actual laboratory wool-blowing tests and by developing certain methods for evaluating the physical proper-ties of a mineral wool. As material was received from the public, laboratory-evaluation technique had to be developed, the results of which would reflect in the mineral-wool-industry standards. The methods of testing used by the mineral-wool industry, not only would have required a pilot-plant installation capable of producing a large tonnage of mineral wool, but each wool-blowing campaign would have been very expensive and necessitated considerable personnel and equipment. The present laboratory wool-blowing equipment can produce as high as eight wool-blowing campaigns a day. The nature, simplicity, and size of the physical testing equipment permit testing as small a sample of wool as 25 grams and give information as reasonably accurate as in a 40-pound bag of wool. The purpose of this report is to describe the laboratory method of production and the evaluation of the physical properties of small quantities of mineral wool. Considerable work has already been done, and the interest of the public and industry is measured in the number of samples being submitted for testing.

This paper describing the methods of ruining a sand, gravel, and bowlder deposit 20 miles east of Los Angeles, and the classification and preparation of these materials for market, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and cost of mining sand and gravel. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding, the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion anti study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations stall ensue. The description contained herein is typical of this industry in Southern California. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author acknowledges tine assistance of L. L. (a) Moisture. - Moisture, "as fired," is specifically significant in pulverized-coal firing because of its effect upon the continuity of raw-coal feed to the pulverizer, pulverizer capacity, flame stability, and speed of ignition. The extraneous moisture content is a rough index of potential difficulties in unloading and maintaining the flow of raw coal to the pulverizer and of pulverized coal to the furnace, with the troubles increasing geometrically as the percentage increases. Sticking or other stoppage of coal flow at any point between the bunker and the furnace is especially serious with pulverized-coal firing because there is danger of immediate loss of output. Where moisture is a problem, the designer must exercise great care in the design of coal-handling and preparation apparatus.

In laboratory testing, the Bureau of Mines established criteria by which common resin-grouted roof bolting systems can be evaluated and compared. Ultimate strength and stiffness were determined for nonten-sioned full-column, point-anchor, tensioned full-column, and debondable resin-grouted bolts, and for variations on full-column boltsn Bolt per-formances were compared using the performance of the 3/4-in full-column resin-grouted bolt as the standard. New and innovative systems can also be qualitatively compared against this standard. Since the medium into which a resin-grouted bolt is installed is one of the most important parameters affecting bolt performance, various host mediums were used in the testing: sandstone, concrete, simulated coal, simulated shale, and plaster. Bolt performances expected in other mediums can be inferred from the response patterns obtained in these mediums. Results indicate several functional differences among bolt types. Where resistance to shear is important, point-anchor bolts may outperform nontensioned full-column bolts at a lower cost. In medium-to soft-strength rock, tensioned full-column bolts perform best. Also, varying the resin-steel ratio seems to have little effect on the properties of a full-column bolt, when proper resin mixing is ensured.

[Experimental studies were made to develop a laboratory technique for direct removal of cadmium and germanium from sphalerite concentrates. Cadmium- and germanium-bearing concentrates from the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar field were sound to be, amenable to an inert atmosphere fuming process for removing these two moats in the form of gaseous sulfides. Treating the condensed fume by pyrometallurgical methods upgraded the material end provided a means of partly separating the constituents. Cadmium was concentrated about 35:1 arid germanium about 300:1. The extractive investigations were supplemented by vapor-pressure studies on the sulfides of germanium to obtain fundamental data for larger scale laboratory conditioning and control when treating the zinc concentrates. Vapor-pressure curves were developed for synthesized monosulfide and disulfide The results of these- investigations indicate the possibility of significantly increasing the recovery of cadmium from zinc concentrates. Comparison with present recovery of germanium cannot be made, since commercial recovery data arc not available.]

This report is concerned with the conditions affecting the methods and costs of mining phosphate rock in that part of the western phosphate field that is in Bear Lake and Caribou Counties in southeastern Idaho ( see fig . 1) . The area was selected because it contains most of the known phosphate reserve and because its geology has been studied more extensively than that of other sections . Deposits of phosphate rock on public land may be leased from the Government under the terms of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 , subject to the regulations of the Bureau of Land Management . Public interest in phosphate production is growing , as shown by an increasing number of applications for leases . Two mines are being operated steadily for the production of phosphate rock by companies that have also the necessary processing plants for the manufacture of fertilizer . Total western phosphate - rock production in 1947 is reported by the Economics Statistics and Division of the Federal Bureau of Mines to have been 1,193,000 long tons , mined in Idaho , Montana , and Wyoming . The average grade was 30.7 percent of contained phosphorus pentoxide (P205 ) ; the average value at the mines was $5.67 per long ton . Idaho contributed 905,000 tons , or somewhat more than 75 percent of western production . Western fertilizer plants took 23 percent of total production; 76 percent was exported . Strip mining accounted for 75 percent of the Idaho tonnage; the remainder was stoped from underground workings . Rock must contain a minimum of 30 percent P205 to be commercially useful for the production of superphosphate fertilizer by current acid treatment methods . Research by corporations and Government agencies has been directed toward the use of lower - grade ore . So far , only by smelting can rock containing as little as 25 percent P205 be used economically . Any development of processing or use pattern that would render the mining of , say , 20 percent rock profitable would have important effects in reducing the unit cost of mining . In the search for metallurgical improvements , consideration should be given to the saving of valuable components of the rock, such as vanadium and fluorine , both of which are present in the beds .

"The main objective of this research is to identify the mechanisms of control of respirable dust generation in coal mines. Full understanding of the mechanics of crack propagation in coal is of fundamental importance in studies of the generation and control of respirable dust.The main objectives of this fracture investigation are: 1) to determine reliable data on the fracture toughness of coal as a parameter controlling unstable crack propagation; 2) to determine fracture propagation velocity in coal providing data on the terminal velocity at which crack bifurcation occurs and fine fragments of coal material are generated; and 3) to apply the critical strain energy density criterion to model mixed mode crack propagation in coal.The development of the protocol, laboratory procedure and equipment necessary to conduct an extensive mixed mode fracture toughness testing program has been completed. About 80 mixed mode fracture toughness tests, 10 good fracture velocity records and over 50 fracture surface examination with the SME are available. The details of the mixed mode fracture toughness testing are available in a paper titled, ""Development of Mixed Mode Testing System for Geologic Materials"" which is available from the center. The average fracture toughness and critical strain energy density values for the three seams investigated to date are included in the attached Figures 71, 72, 73."

The Bureau of Mines discovered that silicon and nickel additions can prevent the formation of copper alloys of Sn, Sb, and As on the surface of steel during reheating to hot-working temperatures. When molten, these copper alloys cause surface hot shortness during hot working. Wrought steels were reheated isothermally and by simulated industrial practice; the resulting surfaces were metallographically evaluated. The steels contained, In weight-percent, 0.20 C, 0.45 Mn, and up to 1.00 Si, 1.00 Cu, and 0.15 Ni, and up to 0.30 Sn, Sb, or As. The larger the Cu, Sn, Sb and As content of the steels, the greater the amount of silicon necessary to prevent copper alloy formation. A content of 0.10 Ni considerably decreased the amount of silicon necessary for copper steels containing tin and antimony, but not for those containing arsenic. Theories for the beneficial effect of silicon and nickel additions are presented.

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. "Modification of Quarry Process.Limestone beds are formed by processes of nature, processes that have been in operation for thousands and perhaps millions of years. Therefore, their com- position and physical properties are long-established and unalterable features over which man has no control. He must take them as he fields them.It is undoubtedly true that the character of lime depends largely on the nature of the parent limestone. A high-calcium lime cannot be manufactured from a dolomite, nor can a pure lime result from the calcination of an impure raw material. However, in the process of turning limestone into lime man is not entirely helpless in his control of quality. Even though a deposit is variable in character a single lime product of uniform quality may be produced by judicious quarrying. A single grade of product may not always be desired, the producer may wish to supply the needs of a variety of users each demanding U different grade or quality of lime such a series of graded products may be produced in part at least by modifying the quarry method. Thus, by changes in quarry practice a single product or a variety of products may be made. The latter problem will be considered at a later time, and the present paper devoted to the first named question' that of producing a single grade of lime from a deposit of variable rock,It is realized of course that uniformity in the product is influenced greatly by manufacturing processes such as calcining' hydrating' grinding or storage, but the present discussion is confined to the influence of raw materials only. In considering the various devices that may be employed it is realized that much remains to be learned, and it is hoped that many operators will contribute to the discussion as they have already done in connection with previous papers of this series."

The heats of formation of gehlenite and talc were determined by hydro-fluoric acid solution calorimetry. The results are reported in terms of the constituent oxides (?H298.15 = -31.1 ± 0.5 kcal/mole for gehlenite and ?H298.15 = -44.9 ± 0.3 kcal/mole for talc) and in terms of the constituent elements (?H298.15 = -952.8 ± 0.7 kcal/mole for gehlenite and ?H298.15 -1,415.5 ± 1.4 kcal/mole for talc).

"The significant facts in the problem of the relation between the production of crude petroleum, and the ever-increasing demand for petroleum products are that in spite of continually increasing production, improvements in methods of refining and utilization, and heavy increases in imports, demands grow still more rapidly and we seem always faced with a shortage at hand or lust ahead. On the other hand, our foremost authorities warn um of entirely inadequate domestic reserves. Looking abroad we find some large fields and many of speculative promise, 'tut the situation is complicated by international relations and demands by other countries which promise to be even more insistent than oars. This is the situation, then. We can not rely upon our own Crude Petroleum to meet the Ever Increasing Demand for Petroleum Products.I wish to follow this somewhat alarming statement by saying at once that the Bureau of Mines is not pessimistic in facing this situation. To my mind those who discuss the oil situation may be placed in three categories; the pessimists, the optimists, and the super-optimists. The pessimists I call those who see darkly and will concede no possibility of solution. According to them a few years will see the automobiles piled in windrows of 'dilapidated junk, I have no sympathy with this point of view and deem it vicious and entirely unwarranted.The optimists I term those who believe that there is a solution and that we shall be able to meet all of our reasonable requirements for as far into the future as can be foreseen, yet who recognizes that this desired end can not be attained without prevision and energetic effort.The super-optimists are those who will say to you, ""There is nothing to this talk of shortage, whenever we have needed oil we have always found it and always will."" To these gentlemen the possibility of an inadequate supply of oil is as incomprehensible as the possibility of the extinction of the passenger pigeon was to the early settlers who saw flocks that hid the sun for days during their passage. The passenger pigeon disappeared within two generations thereafter, and I deem this point of view as being perhaps more vicious than that of the extreme pessimist. It seems to me it is nothing less than improvidence lulling us into a false sense of security. There is an old proverb to the effect that ""The Lord helps him who helps himself."" I believe that we shall solve the oil problem, but I do not think it will be solved by vague optimism. It is going to call for our most energetic efforts and I believe we shall have to do a lot of ""helping ourselves."""

The great expansion of production of aluminum for war purposes has aroused some concern regarding the available supply of carbon suitable for making carbon electrodes required in the electrolytic aluminum process. Approximately three-quarters of a pound of carbon electrode is consumed for each pound of aluminum produced. 5 Because of its small amount of impurities and its suitable physical characteristics, calcined petroleum coke is the standard material used by the aluminum industry for making electrodes As it may be necessary to use some substitute materials, the possibility of using coke made from coal has been considered. Besides this possible use, information concerning the source of low-ash coals is of general interest. Specifications of the aluminum industry for calcined petroleum coke suitable for the manufacture of electrodes are very stringent in regard to allowable impurities. In one such specification the maximum allowable ash is 1.0 percent; the maximum allowable content of iron (as Fe) is 0.06 percent and that of silicon (as Si) is 0.08 percent; the maximum for cal- cium (as Ca) and for sodium (as Na) is 0.12 percent for each, but the two combined may not exceed 0.12 percent; maximum allowable sulfur is 2.0 per- cent. The presence of barium, nickel, chromium, manganese, cobalt, or vanadium is objectionable, and only extremely small amounts are allowed. In regard to physical properties, the coke is required to be so thoroughly calcined that it has a real density of at least 2.02.

An aluminizing dross which is accumulating as a waste material in substantial quantities was tested for possible use as a steel deoxidizer. This material, consisting mainly of aluminum, silicon, and iron, was used to deoxidize laboratory-scale melts ranging from 7 to 100 pounds. Oxygen analysis showed that the aluminizing dross was effective in reducing oxygen levels in steel. A direct comparison with aluminum wire showed the dross material to be at least as effective. Under similar test conditions with 7-pound melts, 3 grams of aluminum reduced the oxygen concentration from 210 to 175 ppm, while 4 grams of aluminizing dross (equivalent to approximately 2 grams aluminum) reduced the oxygen concentration from 250 to 170 ppm. An additional 4 grams of aluminizing dross produced a final oxygen concentration of 140 ppm.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational disease in the U.S. with devastating consequences particularly in the mining industry. A study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) revealed that 90% of coal miners have hearing impairment by age 50, compared to only 10% of those not exposed to occupational noise. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Continuous Mining Machine (CM) operators account for 30% of workers exposed to noise doses exceeding the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL). This number becomes more dramatic considering that 49% of the total national underground coal production is extracted using these machines. In this context, NIOSH is conducting research to identify and control dominant noise sources in CMs. Previous noise source identification was performed using a Brüel &Kjær (B&K) 1.92-m diameter, 42-microphone phased array. These measurements revealed that the impacts from the conveyor chain onto the tail roller, and the impacts from the conveyor chain onto the upper deck are the dominant noise sources at the tail-section of the CM. The objectives of the work presented in this paper were: 1) To rank the noise radiated by the different sections of the conveyor, and 2) to determine the effect of a urethane-coated tail roller on the noise radiated by the tail-section. This test was conducted using an Acoustical and Vibrations Engineering Consultants (AVEC) 3.5-m diameter, 121-microphone phased array. The results from this new test show that a urethane-coated tail roller yields reductions in the tail-section of 2 to 8 dB in Sound Pressure Level in the frequency range of 1 kHz to 5 kHz. However, integration of the acoustic maps shows that the front-section and mid-section of the conveyor also contain dominant noise sources. Therefore, a urethane-coated tail roller in combination with a chain with urethane-coated flights that reduces the noise sources in the front and mid sections of the conveyor is required toyield a significant noise reduction on the CM operator?s overall exposure. These results show the applicability of phased array technology for low frequency noise source identification.

A few years ago, (March 3, 1915) Congress passed a law providing for the establishments of ten mining experiment stations under the supervision of the Bureau of Mines. In 1917 the Secretary of the Interior decided that one of these stations should be devoted to Petroleum, and in the early part of 1918, approved the establishment of the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, upon the condition that the city furnish the site for the buildings and guarantee $50,000. for the erection of the buildings. A building site of 5 acres and the necessary building fund was furnished by the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce.The buildings consist of an administration and laboratory building, both of brick construction. The former is a two-story structure of eight rooms. A large room occupying over half of the main floor is devoted to the library, reception room, and clerical force. The remaining rooms comprise a drafting room and six offices occupied by the staff assigned to this station. The laboratory is a one-story brick building and contains a well-equipped chemical and physical laboratory, also a machine shop and mechanical laboratory. In addition to the main buildings there now are on the property an experimental refinery, a blue-print house, and a store house. These latter buildings are all of sheet-iron construction.
