"A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; possible uses are discussed. A case study of how the technology was used at Hemlo Gold Mines is presented.IntroductionUsing gravity to supplement either flotation or cyanidation is a well established practice in the gold industry. It differs from most recovery circuits in that most of the gold recovered by gravity would be recovered in any case by the circuit downstream, be it flotation or cyanidation. The economic justification of gravity is therefore based on small margins (for example. a net smelter return of gravity gold of 99%, as opposed to 94% by flotation). It was easily demonstrated when either flotation or cyanidation were relatively inefficient processes, and labour costs low (as gravity can be labour intensive). Over the past thirty years, the advent of better flotation machines (flash, column, high capacity), more effective collectors, and better control systems has increased flotation's metallurgical performance, thereby decreasing the incentive for gravity recovery. Cyanidation technology has undergone similar changes, with the advent of activated carbon, oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and improved impeller design.Today, gravity could remain an attractive option only inasmuch as it can be implemented with very low capital and operating costs. This has resulted in a relative shift away from gold gravity recovery (except for alluvial deposits), in the seventies and eighties. For example, as of the early nineties, gold gravity recovery has disappeared from the typical South African flow sheet. The advent of the Knelson Concentrator, at the beginning of the eighties, foreshadowed a resurgence of gravity recovery, as gold's grinding and classification behaviour (Banisi, Laplante and Marois, 1991) makes it possible to achieve adequate gold recoveries with very simple, Knelson based, gravity circuits (Laplante et al., 1994).Consider for example the Hemlo recovery circuit, made of a single 61 cm x 122 cm (2' x 4') screen, an automated 76 cm (30"") Knelson feeding a Gemeni table, to produce a 70-80% Au concentrate which accounts for approximately one fourth of the gold production (about 3 million grams per year). The low capital and operating costs make it possible to justify the gravity circuit on the basis of savings in other operating costs (e.g. fewer carbon stripping and reactivation cycles). Any improvements in recovery, which would at Hemlo be difficult to measure, would be additional benefits. Such a circuit is rapidly becoming a standard in Canadian and Australian operations.The justification for installing a gravity circuit must be first based on an estimate of how much gold it will recover (irrespective of what the potential benefits are). This is a function of the nature of the gravity circuit to be installed; however, Knelson circuits, by their very simplicity and efficiency, limit the options. This leaves the amenability of the ore to gravity recovery as the single most important parameter. Various approaches can be used to characterize this response (Woodcock, 1993). "The presence of excessive water in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit initiated studies into the ground-water conditions that might be expected in mining the Granite Lake and Pollyanna pits. Hydrologic information obtained from a pump test program in 1974 indicated that deep-well dewatering could be successfully achieved. In 1976, a deep-well dewatering system consisting of eight wells was installed on the periphery of the Pollyanna pit . it has been responsible for a significant decrease in mining costs.This paper presents a brief summary of the engineering principles involved in the design of the Gibraltar dewatering system and the problems encountered in the installation and operation of deep-well pumps. IntroductionGibraltar Mines is an open-pit copper-molybdenite mine located approximately 230 air miles north of Vancouver in the central interior of British Columbia (Fig. I). The property consists of three separate major orebodies; Gibraltar East, Granite Lake and Pollyanna (Fig. 2). Mining commenced during the summer of 1971, in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit. The Granite Lake Stage 1 pit was mined from mid 1974 to mid 1976. The Pollyanna Stage 1 pit is currently being mined and the Gibraltar East Stage 2 is being developed for production. This report is intended as an outline of the studies and tests leading up to and including the installation of the Pollyanna pit dewatering system, the problems encountered and the results obtained.GeneralIn the summer of 1973, mining in the Gibraltar East pit progressed below ""daylight"" on the down-hill side and ground water very quickly became a costly nuisance in the day-to-day mining operations. Mining, maintenance and blasting costs reflected these problems. Concern was also voiced about adverse effects of ground water on pit wall stability. This concern later became a reality in the Gibraltar East and Granite Lake pits. A study was initiated to investigate various methods and costs of dewatering the pit areas. The study included in-pit sumps, deep peripheral wells and a drainage gallery system located below the pits."

"The internal operation of a tumbling mill is a very hostile environment and precludes the sustainable operation of internal sensors to measure the mechanisms of charge motion and breakage events. Instead indirect methodologies are required to expand the current understanding developed within a framework of perfect mixing of the mill contents. A number of measurement approaches have been successfully used to explore the operation of SAG mills including strain instrumented lifter bolts, mill shell strain measurement and thermal (energy balance) of operating mills.Early acoustics measurement was developed by Hardinge using a 'microphone' located close to the expected toe location. This signal was an indicator of the mill fill. Improvements were implemented with the use of two microphones straddling the toe location to try to increase the sensitivity of the measurement and reduce ambiguities. Further improvements included a filtered signal indicative of steel interactions. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of signal generation and the complexity of the processes do not provide a consistent signal.In recent years, advanced acoustic measurement using arrays of microphones utilising signal processing techniques have been implemented as SmartNoise and validated on over 30 mills. This paper will discuss the results obtained with signals such as water holdup, mill shell steel hits and two each of the toe and shoulder angles. An estimate of the internal mill component wear rates is also accessible.Advanced acoustic measurements with wide bandwidths when combined with physics models and process understanding has achieved a step change in the understanding of the dynamic internal operation of a tumbling mills on time scales of 80 ms. These techniques have been used extensively on SAG mills, but have also been applied to FAG and ball mills. Acoustic measurement is used for the rapid diagnosis of mill conditions and holistic control for optimisation and stability."

In recent years, the secure supply of critical and technology metals has become increasingly important tomajor industrialized economies that seek to sustain their industrial base and develop advanced technologies, such as clean energy. Canada, with its significant reserves of rare earth element (REE) and other metals, has an opportunity to supply some of the global demand for these materials. However, to transition from promising mineral deposits to marketable products, investment in strategic research and development (R&D) and expertise is needed to address the complex technological challenges around the production, separation and processing of these metals, and to better understand the global market for these key commodities. To this end, in its April 2015 budget, the Government of Canada committed to invest $23M over 5 years to accelerate production of REE and chromite/ferrochrome. The goal of this program, developed in close association with industry, is that Canada contributes a sustainable supply of REE to the global market. The research and development program will provide the technological capacity to establish a Canadian REE industry. This paper will discuss REE R&D advances achieved in the first year of the program in areas of mineral characterization, beneficiation, leaching, separation and environmental management and will highlight the Canadian model of collaboration where industry (e.g. prospective producers, technology companies), government, academia and other stakeholders work closely to ensure that the R&D is targeted, innovative and effectively deployed and commercialized.

"Extraction of Gold in Ketone from a suitably prepared sample of sulphide or siliceous ore or concentrate permits a rapid and accurate determination by Atomic Absorption. Mill test products and exploration development samples are acid-treated to effect complete dissolution of silver, copper, zinc, lead, molybdenum and iron present. Interferences in the determination of molybdenum are described. Results by Atomic Absorption are comparable to those afforded by other acceptable methods.INTRODUCTIONDuring recent years much has been written and discussed concerning Atomic Absorption Spectrometry as a technique for determining the concentration of metallic elements. We would, however, recommend a perusal of the paper presented by J. C. Ingles at the annual meeting of Canadian Gold Metallurgists held in Ottawa, January, 1966. The paper was published in the August, 1966, issue of the Canadian Mining Journal, and contains general information on Atomic Absorption.The purpose of our paper is to present certain specific method procedures for the determination of several precious and base metals normally present in Mine, Mill and Smelter products. Of necessity, analytical results should be as accurate as the most suitable available method permits, whether for metallurgical balance, settlement purpose, ore beneficiation programs, or exploration property development. The success of such programs is relative to the accuracy, speed and economics of the analysis. It is obvious, therefore, that in presenting our paper we consider the technique has achieved the desired evaluation."

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

"Included in the Mines Gaspe mining complex located at Murdochville, Quebec, is a copper smelter which comprises a reverberator furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters, an anode furance, and a sulphuric acid plant.The 50% smelter capacity available is supple mentedby custom concentrates for treatment. As these concentrates can be varied and extremely complex many modifications and improvements have been brought about to optimize and make the process more flexible since its inauguration in 1955.IntroductionThe copper smelter of the Mines Gaspe mining complex is located in Murdochville, a small municipality in the heart of the Gaspe peninsula, 90 km northwest of the town of Gaspe .This metallurgical installation has a daily smelting capacity of 650 tonnes of concentrate and an output of 250 tonnes of copper and 900 tonnes of sulphuric acid. Its main components are: a reverberatory furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters, one rotary anode furnace and one acid plant. The gases, which are produced by the converters, are treated at the acid plant then combined with gases from the reverberatory furnace before being vented through a 152 metre high stack .From the beginning of its operation until the present day (1991), the smelter has treated 7 million tonnes of concentrate and 100 thousand tonnes of scrap for a production of 1.8 million tonnes of copper and 2.2 million tonnes of sulphuric acid."

Description of the Springhill Coal Field The Springhill coal basin, which lies in the approximate centre of Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, is of Carboniferous age, and forms a syncline plunging to the westward at an angle of 32° at the outcrop but gradually flattening to the dip. It contains several workable seams of varying thicknesses, a generalized section of the measures in descending order from the surface being: [] The 1,114 feet of strata is composed of shales and sandstones, and all of the coal seams mentioned, with the exception of No. 4 and No. 5, have been mined commercially. The coal is said to be the best steam and domestic coal in the Province of Nova Scotia.

To establish a process for the electrochemical recovery of rare earth elements from used magnet scraps, the electrochemical formation of RE-Ni alloys in molten NaCl-KCl-RECl3 salt at 973 K was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry and open-circuit potentiometry indicated the formation of several phases of RE-Ni alloys. The formation potential for each RE-Ni alloy phase was determined from the results of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction of alloy samples prepared by potentiostatic electrolysis of a Ni plate electrode at various potentials. The optimum electrolysis conditions for the separation of Nd, Dy, and Pr are discussed.

Fine refuse slurry impoundment is a requirement for the coal industry to dispose the fines. Impoundment maintenance is an on going problem for the coal industry and its breakage creates environmental as well as financial problems. Deep Cone thickener technology which has been successfully applied in the alumina industry to dewater red mud was evaluated for fine refuse slurry. Preliminary obtained in a pilot-plant test showed that properly flocculated conventional thickener underflow slurry could be thickened to about 52.5 wt % solids and could replace belt filter press. The Deep Cone thickener was also found to dewater clean coal slurry to about 70 wt % solids. Further testing of the unit at other coal preparation plant is in progress.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. This paper documents the North American database.

This paper provides an introduction to wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and its successful application to the beneficiation of rare earth element (REE) enriched eudialyte. The analysis includes an in-depth reporting of the deportment of key elements as well as a statistical interpretation of the relative importance of operational parameters including magnetic field intensity, flow velocity, and matrix loading density. Conclusions are drawn on the relative success of the technology, potential areas for process improvement, and the research direction that continues to be investigated. Three original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technologies were subjected to a series of screening and characterization tests to identify the optimal operating parameter set to magnetically beneficiate eudialyte from Norra Kärr, Sweden. Upon the completion of the characterization test it was apparent that the Metso HGMS technology was superior with respect to REE recovery and gangue rejection for the Norra Kärr composite. The Metso HGMS was then subjected to a series of verification tests to confirm the repeatability and reproducibility of the system.

"IntroductionWE HAVE HEARD quite a lot recently on newer methods -of supporting roof, such as roof bolting or the use of metal props and •booms, but, with the exception of roof bolting, these methods are confined mostly to comparatively low, regular seams and even .bolting cannot be used to hold soft sides. Thus, where a seam of coal has great variations in thickness, or where it is faulty, or where the coal sides must be supported, nothing can wholly take the place of timbering with wood. This paper will deal mainly with the method of timbering such a seam, namely, the No. 3 seam mined by Brazeau Collieries, Limited, at Nordegg, Alberta, where the full height of a thick seam is mined in development. However, a few words on one or two other systems practised in Alberta when, in development work, a thick seam is only partially mined, should be of interest.Examples of Timbering in High SeamsThere .are several methods in use today for dealing with high seams of coal. The most popular is to develop the seam by driving road-ways in the coal by some conventional method, usually recovering the full thickness of the seam on the retreat. The following examples illustrate two variations of this method.In Figure I we have a thick •seam of friable coal, with a good roof, pitching about 30 degrees, which is being mined by taking the upper part of the seam in the development work, leaving the •bench coal in place. "This paper provides a foundation for studying the growth of fractures in presence of other discontinuities and different anisotropies of low permeable hydrocarbon formations and helps to improve the design strategies for multistage fracturing.The multistage fracturing technology has recently been used to exploit low permeable hydrocarbon reservoirs. However, the mechanism of hydraulic fractures interaction and the impact of local heterogeneities on ultimate trajectory of the growing hydraulic fractures are not yet understood in depth. A fully coupled poroelastic Finite Element based model is developed to investigate the mixed mode propagation behaviour of growing hydraulic fractures. This model takes advantage of an explicit representation of the fracture which enables us to take the effects of rock and fluid related parameters into account. Moreover, impact of fracture geometry and leak-off phenomenon is investigated. The refined mesh around the crack provides the added advantage of more detailed stress distribution, pore pressure change and back stress in the vicinity of the fracture and in particular at the fracture tip. The potential deviation propensity of the fractures is evaluated based on the fundamental rule that fractures propagate perpendicular to the direction of the minimum horizontal stress.This study shows that pressurization of transverse hydraulic fractures results in the reorientation of local principal stresses, particularly in vicinity of fracture tips. Variation of flow patterns clearly influences the evolution of shear stress around the fracture tips which will potentially lead to mixed-mode I and II fracturing and consequently, fracture deviation. The presence of local heterogeneities such as preexisting fissures and/or fractures is a main source of such pore pressure induced stress redistribution and reorientation and potential deviation of hydraulic fractures.Most existing models ignore or simplify the effect of pore pressure/stress coupling as well as the fracture geometry and fluid flow within the fracture. Also, the fluid leak-off from the hydraulic fracture into the formation, which is a controlling factor in fracture growth, is often considered using analytical models. Taking advantage of a fully coupled porelastic model along with an explicitly discretized fracture, this study provides a more realistic insight into the complex fracture propagation processes of multistage fracturing operations particularly in presence of reservoir geo-mechanical complexities."

THE Ross mine, a subsidiary operation of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, is situated near the north end of lot 1, concession 2, Hislop township, Ontario. The property comprises the north half of lot 1, concession 2, and the south one-third of lot 1, concession 3. It is readily reached by a good motor road from the village of Ramore, 7.5 miles to the southeast on the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway. The-mine has been developed to a depth of 900 feet and the current daily production rate is about 260 tons. From the inception of operations in March, 1935, until December 31st, 1942, 455,720 tons of ore with a total value of $4,169,-316 have been milled. The silver to gold ratio of 1.48 to 1 is unusually high for Ontario gold mines. The deposit is interesting because the relationship between hydrothermal metamorphism and three successive stages of fracturing and mineralization is marked with considerable clarity. During the past seven years, detailed geological maps of the mine have been kept up to date, many thousands of feet of diamond-drill core have been logged, and numerous thin and polished ore sections have been studied. The present paper describes the structure and mineralogy of the orebodies.

"Rod mills processing nickel and copper ore experienced recurring failures of liner bolts. In some cases failures became very frequent, requiring constant mill intervention and consequently impacting process stability and operating costs. Investigation related to the causes of bolt failures involved a multidisciplinary approach with the participation of engineering, maintenance and operation. It included the determination of bolt failure mechanisms as well as the assessment of mechanical properties, fabrication quality and handling and installation procedures. In addition, other parameters affecting bolt performance such as mill and liner design, operating parameters and maintenance practices were studied. This paper reports the failure investigation results and proposed solutions for failure prevention. INTRODUCTIONOccasional liner bolt failures are common in rod mills. However, chronic bolt failures developed in rod mills processing nickel and copper ore caused frequent shutdowns for bolt replacement to an extent that affected process stability. At first, it was thought that the cause of recurring failures was related to bolt quality. The operation then submitted several failed bolts to failure analysis. However, it became apparent that bolt quality was unlikely to be the main cause of failures. The determination of root cause (s) then became more complex, requiring a multi-disciplinary approach to failure investigation, requiring the assessment of bolt installation methods, mill design, operating conditions and maintenance practices. The results of the metallurgical failure analysis and investigation of other possible causes of failures are reported here."

SMS Siemag (SMS) has always been the front runner in safety aspects of electric smelter plants for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. The awareness for safety increased significantly over the past decades and SMS contributed with its design features greatly to a safer design and operation. Today, safety aspects are not only part of the smelter design but also of the overall plant layout. Explosions in electric smelters are rare, but have a huge impact on peoples’ lives, on equipment and on production. For this reason, SMS wanted to have a better overview of explosions within the smelting industry in order to see if useful statistics could be extracted. Generally, there is a lack of statistics regarding explosions in the electric smelting industry, and not enough information is collected or published. A significant portion of the explosions seems to be water related. Many companies, both operating and engineering, are trying to handle the risks of water, and apply methods to detect water leakages. Installing such a system is a management decision and management has then to make sure the system is properly implemented. The disadvantages and limitations of these systems should be carefully considered and communicated to operators and authorities.

In this research work, a process was described for the recovery of copper and zinc in copper converter flue dust from the Black Sea Copper Works' Samsun Smelter Plant. After characterization of a representative flue dust sample, the process included roasting of the flue dust and then leaching in dilute sulfuric acid solution. Roasting time and temperature were studied to determine the optimum roasting conditions. Sulphuric acid concentration, duration, temperature of leaching and solid to liquid ratio were the parameters studied in the bench scale laboratory leaching experiments.

The hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of an a -titanium alloy and its two kinds of welding samples have been investigated. The results show that this alloy has very low susceptibility to SCC, and the values of Kiscc for the alloy are 46.4 MPa ? m' 65.86 MPa ? mu2 in the direction of T-L and L-T, respectively. The scanning electron fractographs show transgranular and quasi-cleavage fracture. The hydrogen embrittlement results show that the notch sample of the alloy is not sensitive to hydrogen, but the electro-beam welding and diving-arc welding samples are sensitive.
