Marathon PGM Corporation?s PGM-Cu Project in Northwestern Ontario (Figure 1.0) serves as a case study to describe the process involved in advancing a deposit from grass roots exploration to the completion of several feasibility studies and the parallel commencement of environmental permitting. Through the following examination of historical exploration activities, it is clear that these activities are directly related to economic stimulus, mostly measured by downturns in the mineral industry. Other factors that influence the success of exploration advancing to feasibility and new mine development includes the ownership of the mineral claims, which also changes under these economic influences and the crucial role of interactions between the Company, the Crown and First Nations. The Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is hosted within the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Proterozoic Coldwell Complex, which intrudes and bisects the much older Archean Schreiber-Hemlo Greenstone Belt. The sub-circular complex has a diameter of 25 km and a surface area of 580 km2 and is the largest alkaline intrusive complex in North America (Walker et al., 1993). Mineralization at the Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is part of a very large magmatic system that consists of at least three cross-cutting intrusive olivine gabbro units that comprise the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Coldwell Complex (Figure 3.2.4-3). In order of intrusion, the three gabbroic units consist of (1) Layered Gabbro Series, (2) Layered Magnetite Olivine Cumulate (LMOC) and (3) Two Duck Lake (TDL) Gabbro. The relative size and abundance of the gabbroic units decrease in the order Layered Gabbro Series>TDL Gabbro>>LMOC. Late quartz syenite and augite syenite dikes cut all of the gabbros but form a minor component of the intrusive assemblage.

"A long-standing objective has been to obtain interpretable measurements of the oxidation-reduction potential in mineral slurries. For this purpose several sensing electrodes (black platinum wire, platinum foil and spiral, gold foil and spiral, and sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and galena) were investigated to determine their response to the presence of sulphide minerals in the pulp, and to the addition of reagents commonly used in flotation. The observed discrepancies between the electrodes may be explained using a combination of the classical mixed potential model for complex solutions and the probability of contact between the mineral particles and the sensing electrode. It is shown from laboratory testwork that gold spirals are preferred over platinum electrodes. Finally, some of the practical aspects of using the electrochemical measurements in a plant environment are discussed.IntroductonThe interpretation of flotation of sulphide minerals in terms of electrochemical (electron transfer) processes has brought new possibilities for process control of selective flotation. Investigations on massive and compacted particulate bed electrodes have shown that the flotation of a given mineral in the presence of a collector can be controlled by the potential induced on the mineral surface. Also, phenomena such as collector less (self-induced) flotation, activation by heavy metal ions, and natural selectivity sustained by galvanic coupling during flotation might also be controlled by electrochemical means.The technique for measuring electrochemical potential in slurries is an adaptation of that used for solutions. The measurement of the oxidation-reduction potential of a solution (ORP , Redox, Eh) is usually carried out by immersing a noble metal electrode (platinum, gold or silver) and a non-polarizable reference electrode: Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE), Standard Calomel Electrode (SCE), or silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) in the solution. (The abbreviation Eh implies the SHE is the reference electrode.) The potential difference between the two electrodes is measured using a high impedance electrometer. ASTM standard D 1498-76 (revised 1981)(1) covers the practical details of such measurements; however, it does not deal with their meaning either in complex solutions or in mineral slurries ."

With the attainment of high temperatures it becomes possible to process any kind of material (particularly ceramics) in their liquid state. In the plasma spraying process, the material to be sprayed is rapidly heated until it is molten and is propelled by high velocity gases onto a surface where it adheres, to give protective coatings for a wide range of applications. The method could be considered as one of the most versatile and rapid to build up thick deposits (of plastics, metals, ceramics, cermets) and also free-standing artifacts for particular requirements without resorting to lengthy forming and sintering studies. Although plasma spraying is at the production stage in industry, advanced processes have also been developed for economically producing a wide range of new materials. This paper illustrates the benefits of the process and evaluates the challenges it represents.

"Indirect recovery and use of waste heat contained in smelter off-gas is proposed to expand regions available for year-round, on-site production of micro-algae–sourced biodiesel, a fuel that could be used in underground machinery. A dynamic model of an off-gas heat exchanger describes capture and distribution of heat into open, external, rectangular micro-algae ponds. Smelter off-gas contains sufficient energy to maintain large-scale micro-algae cultivation pond temperatures above 15°C, even with winter ambient temperatures below –15°C. Results highlight opportunities that could lie in tapping these heat resources to produce renewable biofuels on-site and sequester CO2 while leaving the industrial process unaffected.RÉSUMÉ On propose la récupération et l’utilisation indirectes de la chaleur résiduelle contenue dans les dégagements gazeux des fonderies pour développer les régions se prêtant à une production toute l’année durant et sur place de biodiesel à partir de micro-algues, carburant dont on pourrait se servir pour le matériel d’exploitation souterraine. Un modèle dynamique d’échangeur de chaleur contenue dans les dégagements gazeux décrit le captage et la distribution de la chaleur dans des bassins rectangulaires ouverts de micro-algues en extérieur. This biomass can be up to 50% oils (lipids), which can be extracted and converted into biodiesel through transesterification (Demirbas, 2008). Compared to terrestrial plants that produce similar oils (e.g., jatropha, soybean, and rapeseed), micro-algae represent an order of magnitude increase in areal productivity, do not require arable land, and can be continuously harvested (Rawat, Ranjith Kumar, Mutanda, & Bux, 2013). The potential advantages through the production of biodiesel from micro-algae also include sequestration of carbon dioxide, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and the co-production of other value-added bioproducts."

"OLI Analyzer is a software package that uses the powerful Mixed Solvent Electrolyte (MSE) model to simulate the behavior of multicomponent electrolyte solutions from infinite dilution to the limit of fused salt, and from temperatures below the freezing point up to near critical temperature of the mixture. The software also allows the creation of thermodynamic parameters for new chemical systems unavailable yet in public-domain or commercial software databanks. This communication reviews the basics of the model and provides some examples of modeling hydrometallurgical applications with emphasis on high temperature applications, including calcium sulfate scale formation in autoclaves, high temperature pH inference and iron control. INTRODUCTIONModeling of electrolyte systems has been of particular interest to various industrial processes, such as separation processes (e.g., solution crystallization, extractive distillation, seawater desalination or bio-separations), environmental applications (e.g., gas treatment, wastewater treatment or chemical waste disposal) and hydrometallurgy (e.g., pH control and neutralization, iron control, scaling and fouling of equipment). Using a chemical model, time-effective predictions of various properties of electrolytes can be obtained, which is beneficial not only during process monitoring, but also during process optimization and process scale up. As a result, pilot scale studies can sometimes be eliminated where budgetary constraints exist. Development of such a powerful model requires the use of a speciation-based model, in which solution chemistry is explicitly addressed (as compared with some models that treat electrolytes either as undissociated or fully dissociated systems), despite being computationally challenging. In addition, as a feature of electrolyte systems, speciation equilibria inherently influence the phase equilibria due to complex formation, ion pairing, and acid-base reactions. Therefore, how the electrolyte solutions behave at various conditions may differ significantly due to the non-ideality, which must be carefully addressed to obtain a model that is applicable to a wide range of conditions such as concentration, temperature, pressure and solvent system."

"Eight volcanogenic massive sulphide districts in Canada and Japan, ranging in age from Archean to Miocene, were selected for analysis. The study revealed that: {I) each district has an average diameter of 32 km; (2) the districts contain 4 to 20 deposits each, with an average of /2 deposits; (3) the average total base metal content per district is 4.6 million tonnes, with a coefficient of variation of32%; (4) ranked in order of size, the largest deposit in each district contains, on average, 67% of the total metal and the second largest about 13 %. The remaining deposits range downward in decreasing proportions. Empirical observations such as these may be used f or evaluating the undiscovered potential of new districts as well as contributing to a better understanding of the distribution and genesis of this important class of base metal deposits. Previous WorkThe characteristic geological features o f volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits have been described by numerous authors over the past fifteen years and it is now widely accepted that these deposits comprise a major ""deposit-type."" In addition to these geological parameters, however, it is now becoming apparent that volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits show several distinctive grade-tonnage relationships. For example, Singer et al. (1975) demonstrated a slight negative correlation between copper grade and ore tonnage in their sampling of 146 volcanogenic deposits. In a study of 110 Canadian Precambrian deposits of this type, Boldy (1977) showed that the size of the modal deposit is 0.39 million tons, that of the median deposit is 1.40 million tons and the arithmetic average is 6.85 million tons. Moreover, Boldy's data show that the average grade of combined base metals (Cu + Zn + Pb) for each of the se three deposit-sizes is, respectively, 6.25%, 5.35% and 6.47%. Because the lead content of Canadian Precambrian volcanogeni c deposits is most frequently less than 1%, the total metal grade is effectively Cu + Zn . From Figure 2 in Bold y (1977), it can be seen that 83% of the deposits fall in the range of 0.l to 10 million tons ."

"The presently increasing world-wide interest in advanced ceramic materials is generally focussed on their exploitation in both structural and functional applications. With the opportunity to engineer microstructures and thereby closely control and tailor the final properties, there are many new applications being made for these materials in both areas.The scope and some of the applications for functional ceramics are reviewed and examples of the present Canadian activity in this field are discussed.BackgroundThere has been progressively increasing international interest in the development and exploitation of ceramic materials in the last five years. The stimulus for this interest arises from several quarters, each of which are independent of the other.• There is a growing awareness of the strategic nature and vulnerability of supply of the raw materials used to produce high performance metal alloys.• The metal alloys are reaching the upper temperature limit for their performance as structural components in engines.• The dramatic increase in oil prices during the late 1970s focussed attention on the need for reduced consumption in many sectors, i.e., there is a need for more efficient engines that operate at higher temperatures - above those tolerated by the present superalloys.• A number of ceramics, especially the structural materials such as SiC, A120 3, AI20rSi02, Si3N4 and the Sialons are produced using non-strategic raw materials and they can exhibit startling performance-auto turbo-rotors are in production mad e of Si3N4 that operate up to 190000 rpm at 600°C, 150000 rpm at 900°C.• Ceramic s are generally of lower density - significant in the weight-reduction of automobiles such as the replacement of a 20-kg five-segment steel leaf spring with a single segment carbon-fibre reinforced unit of 3 kg. • Ceramics also offer major ad vantages in generating, monitoring or controlling the electromagnetic spectrum whether in bulk or thin-film devices that exploit optical, magnetic, pyroelectric, piezoelectric, electronic and I or ionic conductivity characteristics.The opportunity to combine several of these char acteristics in a single material by composition, processing and microstructural design has resulted in an advanced ceramics industry that had world-wide sales in 1980of $4.2 billion (U.S.)(I) and is predicted to grow to sales in the range $7 to $10 billion by 1990 and $16 to $24 billion by the year 2000(2). However, at present, advanced ceramics account for less than 20010 of the total ceramic market."

"High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. Boron (B) co-precipitation was investigated with ettringite to establish a cost efficient method of removing B from acid mine drainage. For 25 mg/L of B solution, most appropriate pH for B removal was pH 11.5. The most appropriate amount of reagent for B removal within Japanese effluent standard (10 mg/L) was B:Al:Ca:SO4 = 1:3:9:4.5, which corresponds to the composition of Ettringite (Al:Ca:SO4 = 2:6:3). The effect of silicate, carbonate and temperature on efficiency of B removal is important as groundwater and hot spring water are often contaminated. When silicate and carbonate are present, more Al and Ca salts are needed for B removal since some aluminum and calcium precipitate with silicate and carbonate as kaolinite and calcium carbonate. These precipitates do not contribute much to B removal. As the temperature raised, the most appropriate pH for B removal decreased. B removal became less efficient as monosulfate precipitated more rapidly as ettringite.

"Considering overgrinding in a grinding process, the grinding characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a HPGR and a conventional CC were comparatively studied. The major properties including particle size, grinding kinetics and grinding technical efficiency (Et) were investigated. Individual size distributions (ISDs) of -2.0mm in a HPGR product showed a more significant “double-peak” characteristic than a CC product. As a result, HPGR products were finer and had a wider full-size distribution because of the greater proportion of fines. The parameters m and zi in m-th order grinding kinetics were analyzed by the partial-derivative method and the critical time tc(tc = exp (1/ zi)) was obtained. zi mainly affected the breakage rate when t < tc; otherwise, m mainly affected the breakage rate. In these tests, tc was considerably higher than the grinding times, and HPGR products yielded a higher zi-value than the CC product for the same sieve size. This indicated that HPGR products had a higher breakage rate and needed a shorter grinding time for a certain grinding fineness. Et was calculated by simulating the size distributions of batch grinding products. HPGR products gave a lower Et at a decreasing rate than the CC products for -2.0 mm feed and -0.5mm feed, and then showed a slightly higher Et for -2.0+0.5 mm feed. This indicated that overginding in HPGR full-size products was more serious under the condition of coarse grinding, whereas the efficiency was higher and overgrinding weakened significantly in HPGR coarse products because of screening-out fines. Based on the above research, a new process of “ultra-crushing in HPGR – classified grinding” was advanced, reducing ores tonnage into first stage ball mill significantly, improving grinding efficient and weakening overgrinding in the whole grinding process.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, comminution accounts for a substantial portion (approximately 60~70%) of the energy consumed in plants. As an ultra-fine crushing equipment,the application of the HPGR for industrial comminution has been paid close attention because of its low specific energy, low steel consumption, high capacity and high ratio of reduction, among others (Schonert, 1998; Norgate & Weller, 1994; Fuerstenau & Kapur, 1995). HPGRs comprise two counter-rotating rolls that draw feed material into the roll gap. One roll is fixed to the mainframe, while the other movable roll is mounted on slides and positioned by hydraulic rams. The specific pressing force (SPF) (i.e., total force divided by projected roller area) is typically in the range of 3~9 N/mm2 depending on the application, while pressures of up to 1000 N/mm2 have been measured within the operating gap (Maxton , Morley, & Bearman , 2003)."

"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. "Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d&apos;Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d&apos;Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d&apos;Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n&apos;a été accordée à l&apos;étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l&apos;évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d&apos;altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n&apos;importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu&apos;à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L&apos;établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d&apos;exploration."

Introduction Most of the Flin Flon ore-body, like many others in northern Canada, was covered by water. The original discovery was made where the ore-body outcropped on a strip of land jutting out into Flin Flon lake. The outcrop could be traced for a distance of 600 feet across the strip of land, but disappeared under the lake on both sides of the peninsula. Following the discovery or location of the property, in 1915, and subsequent to its examination by the H.P. Whitney interests in 1925, an extensive diamond-drilling programme was completed, which proved the existence of an ore-body at least 2,600 feet long and 900 feet deep. In plan, the central part of the ore-body at surface attains an overall width of about 450 feet; including waste horses, and gradually becoming narrower to the south. To the north, it stretches out as a much narrower tongue. The main body is a solid sulphide ore containing gold, silver, copper, and zinc. Adjacent to, and on the footwall side of, the solid sulphide ore-body, there are considerable widths of talcy disseminated copper ore, particularly in the upper 300 feet of the deposit, where the maximum widths occur. The ore-body occurs in a greenstone area, the rock being quite hard on the hanging-wall side, with the footwall schisted, talcy, and much softer. The greater part of the ore-body was overlain by 12 to 15 feet of water and from 15 to 90 feet of mud and clay, this material requiring eventual removal, regardless of the system of mining adopted. The total of mud and clay overburden was estimated at 1,000,000 tons. After considerable study, it was decided to mine the upper 300 feet of the ore-body by open-pit methods; the balance of the ore to be recovered by underground mining . The present paper gives an account of the methods adopted in both operations, and of the problems encountered.

"For many years, rejection of pyrrhotite at the milling stage has been a viable method for sulphur dioxide abatement. Pyrrhotite rejection options have included the use of selective pyrrhotite depressants in flotation; a depressant which has recently come into use is diethylenetriamine (DETA). This reagent has been the subject of recent research and development efforts in the processing of nickel-copper sulphide ores.In the present study, adsorption trends for DETA have been monitored under the dynamic conditions of flotation using a spectrophotometric method which has been adopted for this purpose at Falconbridge Limited. The results indicate that the adsorption of DETA is quite fast and in the majority of cases, accounts for the disappearance of 75-95 % of this reagent from pulp's liquid phase. The adsorption decreases linearly with an increase in the DET A dosage from 100 git to 600 git. The tailings produced in flotation tests were subjected to washing with deionized water at 60 °C to examine the desorption of DET A. These results indicate that the amount desorbed increases with increasing DETA dosage used during flotation but is less than 7 per cent of that adsorbed. It was found that adsorption of DETA alone, even at relatively high levels, does not always cause depression of pyrrhotite. A new combination of reagents identified in the metallurgical laboratories of Falconbridge Limited utilizes sulphur dioxide with DETA. These reagents together are capable of efficient depression of pyrrhotite on a consistent basis."

"Abstract - Oxide-facies banded iron formation in the Third Portage Lake area is hosted by ultramafic and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks and related sedimentary rocks of the Archean (2.8 Ga) Woodburn Lake Group, 80 km north of Baker Lake. These rocks record at least two phases of metamorphism/ metasomatism. Greenschist facies metamorphism, in the temperature range of 370°C to 520°C and at pressures above 2.3 kbar, has affected all rocks on a regional scale. Later mineralization and alteration of banded iron formation (BIF) and associated volcanic rocks resulted from metasomatic fluids which carried Mg, K, Ca, S, As, Cu and Au. These fluids were confined to ductile to brittle, cross-cutting and layer-parallel micro-shears developed in the thickened hinge region of a shallow plunging recumbent fold. Metasomatic reactions yielded cummingtonite + biotite-bearing assemblages which are associated with strongly mineralized iron formation. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide phase and occurs within ductily deformed iron formation where it pervasively replaces magnetite. Minor fine-grained chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite generally occur as inclusions within pyrrhotite and recrystallized magnetite, and rarely as individual grains. Pyrite is restricted to brittlely deformed iron formation, and to the contact between iron formation and altered ultramafic rocks, where it is associated with quartz veins. Pyrite typically replaces pyrrhotite. Native gold is associated with both pyrrhotite and pyrite, but higher gold concentrations are associated with pyrite. Grunerite/Ca-amphibole + stilpnomelane and sparse pyrrhotite and pyrite characterize weakly mineralized iron formation. Within adjacent ultramafic rocks, metasomatic reactions yielded assemblages of interlayered Ca-amphibole + biotite, and talc + Ca-amphibole + carbonate + biotite. K-Ar geochronology on metasomatic biotite from mineralized BIF yielded a 1791 ± 32 Ma age.An epigenetic model is favored for the emplacement of gold. The age of the gold mineralization in the Third Portage Lake area is uncertain, but may be Proterozoic based on the preliminary isotopic age and by analogy with Proterozoic gold deposits elsewhere in this part of the Churchill Structural Province."

Saganoseki Smelter, one of the largest copper producers in Japan, currently operates a single flash smelting furnace to produce 450,000 tons of new copper annually. The smelter used to employ two flash furnaces, and integrated the two into one in 1996. Since then, various improvements to its facilities and technologies have been made to increase productivity. To upgrade the operation efficiency, "stability" was considered a key issue, and the measures were taken to increase the operation and facility reliability. Currently, the furnace is running at a feed rate of 215 DMT/h, while the furnace utilization has been maintained at 97%. This paper outlines recent improvements that have made to increase furnace productivity and efficiency.
