The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. "A geotechnical centrifuge can characterise and model the interaction of tailings and fluids over very long time periods by accelerating drainage and consolidation processes. This technology can be considered an environmental ‘time machine’ for designing and evaluating tailings storage projects and verifying numerical models. The Broadbent G-18 geotechnical centrifuge (2 m diameter, up to 875 rev/min) and associated equipment is a unique facility commissioned in 2011 at UNSW Australia for applied research in low-permeability materials such as mine tailings. Two centrifuge modules are available: the permeameter module for characterisation and physical modelling and the strongbox module for physical modelling.This paper presents examples of geotechnical centrifuge applications for the: consolidation of slurries and dewatering design of earthen barriers compatible with tailings chemistry prediction of contaminant mobility. The specifications and capability of the UNSW Australia geotechnical centrifuge and associated instrumentation is also presented, along with preliminary analysis of the confidence intervals associated with permeability testing of a set of samples of varying heterogeneity. Drainage velocity through a mine tailings sample increases linearly with g-level in the centrifuge permeameter until tailings consolidation occurs. Alternatively, geotechnical centrifuge experiments can be designed to limit consolidation so as to quantify permeability changes that may occur with geochemical interactions between fluids and mine tailings or earthen containments. Reactive solute transport through mine tailings can be simulated at realistic solid:liquid ratios when chemical equilibrium is maintained during geotechnical centrifuge testing. Carefully designed physical models of tailings disposal tested at accelerated gravity can therefore provide a realistic evaluation of tailings consolidation and drainage and the potential for subsurface migration of contaminants from mine tailings over long time periods.CITATION:Timms, W and Anderson, D, 2015. Flotation frothers are heteropolar molecules that are preferentially adsorbed at the bubble interface to enhance the flotation performance by promoting the formation of small and stable bubbles. Frothers have different characteristics that can be used to classify them. A classification framework has been recently presented by Saavedra Moreno et al (2022) to classify non-ionic frothers by conducting a principal component analysis (PCA) and a hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). However, for the purpose of the present research, only five frother characteristics, including molecular weight (MW), hydrophile–lipophile balance (HLB), critical coalescence concentration (CCC), the minimum Sauter mean diameter (DL), and foam stability index (DFI) were used in the PCA and HCA. All those characteristics were evaluated for a two-phase system in the absence of particles. Realising the important role that particles play in froth stability and behaviour, the effect of hydrophobic particles on the presented frother classification framework was investigated in this study. Four frothers with different characteristics, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 1-pentanol, tri (propylene glycol) (TPG), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether (TPM), were chosen. The experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of silica particles esterified with 1-pentanol. It was evident that the results for 1-pentanol, TPM, MIBC, and TPG in the three-phase system agreed well with the frother classification presented for the two-phase system as frothers were clustered in the same groups. The findings from this research support the use of the frother classification system presented in two-phase system to select a specific frother for a particular application without the necessity of conducting laborious experiments in a three-phase system.

The mining industry is quite often faced with declining selling prices for its products in the face of rising prices for the input cost resources that it uses. Blasting is a key activity within the mining system and has a vital role to play within the Mine to MillTM concept. It is therefore important that blasting makes a positive contribution to mine profit and productivity. There are several variables involved in considering the profitability and productivity of blasting. The rock types and structures, the bench height, the blast hole drill rig specifications, hole diameter, spacing and burden, explosive loading and initiation and blast size fragmentation. Productivity accounting is a methodology which is used elsewhere to give additional insights into the productivity and pricing factors that drive the financial performance of a business. Miners know intuitively that productivity and pricing influence costs and profit, but only with productivity accounting can the dollars involved be calculated. Drilling and blasting are part of a chain of unit operations in a mine. For an owner-miner, drilling and blasting would be considered as cost centres and a productivity accounting cost model approach would be relevant. On the other hand a contractor is likely to consider drilling and blasting as a profit centre, in which case a productivity accounting profit model approach would be appropriate. Both of these will be explained. The paper provides a basic outline of deterministic productivity accounting and demonstrates its application to blasting. Drilling and blasting data from a mine was obtained for a two-month period. The change in productivity and prices was calculated to obtain the dollar contributions from them towards the change in cost. It was determined that although there had been productivity dollar gains these were offset by larger pricing dollar losses, the net effect being that total drilling and blasting costs increased. The productivity accounting analysis gives the facts and the mine is in a position to establish priorities based on knowing the dollar contributions of each input used.

The emerging coal seam gas (CSG) industry has the potential to provide a large-scale energy province for Queensland. Aquifer impacts and management of associated by-product water, both in terms of quantity and quality, are pivotal considerations for the development of a sustainable CSG industry.Legislative changes have been introduced to ensure that the CSG industry manages potential groundwater impacts and beneficial reuse of the by-product water to a level acceptable to both government and the community.The relevant new pieces of legislation covering petroleum and coal seam gas activities include the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (P&G Act), Petroleum and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2004 (POLA Act), the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004 and the Petroleum Regulation 2004. Other relevant legislation includes the Petroleum Act 1923 (Petroleum Act) and Part 7AA of the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Coal Seam Gas Regime). The P&G Act introduces a full regime for managing water rights. This includes provisions for monitoring and reporting on the effects that the taking of underground water under petroleum tenure has on other bores in the area. The P&G Act also imposes a æmake good obligationÆ on petroleum tenure holders, which requires the restoration of bores affected by the taking of water or the payment of compensation. These provisions represent a significant departure from the Petroleum Act, which says very little about water rights and does not specify restrictions on the taking of water under petroleum tenure. This paper attempts to outline the requirements and obligations of the P&G Act for the CSG industry in terms of underground water rights, development impact assessments, aquifer trigger thresholds, monitoring and reporting requirements, as well as the make good obligations.

This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and on- site applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no de- watering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

Completeness of extraction of a mineral from ore depends on many reasons. First of all it is a function of quality of disintegration of ore. It is supposed that two basic factors: character of structure and texture of the ore aggregate and a disintegration technique influence the quality of the mineral aggregate destruction, æopeningÆ of its internal boundaries. In this paper, the problem of technological mineralogy from the point of view of genesis of the mineral aggregate, its typomorphical features and methods of their quantitative description are discussed. The purpose of this research is to provide information for technologists. It should enable the development of a rational flexible scheme of disintegration of ore with full extraction of a useful component, without its losses and without unnecessary expenses of energy. For achievement of this purpose the mineralogical information should have ½number and a measure+. By the authors, the technique of the quantitative analysis of fabric of the mineral aggregate based on several models û thermodynamic, crystallographic and geometrical is offered and discussed. The leading role in the quantitative analysis of a fabric of ore belongs to internal bounders. But internal bounders of the mineral aggregate by bounders or faces of the mineral individuals or mineral grains are formed. Their geometry, orientation concerning own (mineral grain) crystallographic lattices, orientation and distribution in space of the ore aggregate are proportional to the energy accumulated at origin and the further growth. These characteristics of mineral individuals are consequences of conditions of their formation. That is why the named triad of models is used. From crystallography it is known that faces of different stability and mobility form borders of crystals. They also contain different quantity of energy. Mineral grains also are faceted by different energy borders. They form intergrowths with each other according to a principle of balance or unbalance. That is why in addition to traditional parameters of the description of a fabric of the mineral aggregate (mode and grainmetrical composition) it is necessary to add new. For example, length and the square of intergrowthing bounders of mineral individuals differentiated (in couples), crystallographic symbols of borders, their roughness and so forth. Consequently, solving a problem of the geometrical characteristic of borders, we define also its power characteristic. In this paper experience of application of our technology in studying ores of one of deposits of Urals Mountains is presented. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices, which are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode, are possessed. Structure and texture of rock or ore aggregate reflect its formation and transformation conditions. It is important to understand that disintegration energy cannot be more than aggregation energy, the energy of intergrowths formation. The square and orientation of mineral individuals borders vary at pressures or stresses of mineral aggregate evolution. These phenomena often cause selective increase in the square of borders at constant average grain size, ie the granulation. Granulation presents the increase in quantity of mineral individuals while their modal share remains constant. At the same time their average mineral grains size. Some mineral individuals increase in size at increased pressure. When lithostatic or lateral pressure drops the majority of mineral grains increases in volume at the cost of intersticial or film solutions or fine grains. These are only special examples of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate. They illustrate our statement that all changes in fabric of the mineral aggregate are a reaction on varying external (ie geological) conditions. It is possible to consider that structurisation of totality of mineral individuals as a whole is a process of adaptation of the mineral aggregate, which forms and exists in varying force and energy fields. Differential and integrated geometry of total internal boundaries of the mineral aggregate serves as adaptation mechanism of the mineral grains system. Boundaries form intergrowths of the mineral aggregate. Thus, it is possible to consider that the most informative parameters of the stereometric analysis for restoration of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate are the following. First of all, it is a quantitative estimation of the volumetric shape of the ore mineral in crystallographic coordinates, a total area of borders of all mineral grains in the aggregate, the specific square of their boundaries, the specific square of intergrowth boundaries of the ore mineral separately with grains of each minerals of the matrix of the mineral aggregate as well as traditional grainsmetric and modal composition. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices that are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode are possessed.

Silica-Kaolin Sand Wet Sizing The Bulgarian deposits of silica-kaolin sand are localised in the eastern part of the Danube plain. After wet separation the raw material yields two products - washed kaolin (different grades) and silica sand (different grades). The water washing technology includes: disintegration; spiral classification; hydrocyclone classification and dewatering of kaolin grades; hydroclassification; sizing using drum screens and dewatering of silica sand grades. Research and development program has started to improve the silica-kaolin sand separation in processing plants. Based on the raw material and tails characterisation data and the preliminary experiments using Derrick Stacksizer screening machines a silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology was developed. The full-scale pilot flowsheet includes the following units: Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.43 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 500 mm Flat bottom Hydrocyclone; Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.150 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 100 mm Hydrocyclone and Derrick Dual Motor Linear Motion Machine equipped with 0.064 mm opening Derrick Pyramid Panel. The pilot-test data clearly demonstrate that the new silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology is suitable for Bulgarian silica-kaolin raw material. There are possibilities to increase the silica sand recovery increasing the production of silica sand grade PK 0.16 and starting the production a new grade PK 0.10.

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with potassium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 4 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is treated with EDTA, adjusted with ammonia to give a pH value between 5 and 6 treated with cyanide, ammonia, and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate then bismuth diethyldithiocarbamate is extracted with chloroform and the yellow colour is compared visually with a standard series. Alternatively, the bismuth complex may be filtered on a "Millipore" filter and subjected to x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

The mining industry faces concurrent pressures of reducing water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in coming years. However, the interactions between water and energy use, as well as GHG emissions have largely been neglected in modelling studies to date. In addition, investigations tend to focus on the unit operation scale, with little consideration of whole-of-site or regional scale effects.This paper presents an application of a hierarchical systems model (HSM) developed to represent water, energy and GHG emissions fluxes at scales ranging from the unit operation, to the site level, to the regional level. The model allows for the linkages between water use, energy use and GHG emissions to be examined in a flexible and intuitive way, so that mine sites can predict energy and emissions impacts of water use reduction schemes and vice versa. This paper examines whether this approach can also be applied to the regional scale with multiple mine sites.The model is used to conduct a case study of several coal mines in the Bowen Basin, Australia, to compare the utility of centralised and decentralised mine water treatment schemes. The case study takes into account geographical factors (such as water pumping distances and elevations), economic factors (such as capital and operating cost curves for desalination treatment plants) and regional factors (such as regionally varying climates and associated variance in mine water volumes and quality).The case study results indicate that treatment of saline mine water incurs a trade-off between water and energy use in all cases. However, significant cost differences between centralised and decentralised schemes can be observed in a simple economic analysis. A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. Before presentIng my address I wish to acknowledge the honour which has been conferred on me by my appointment to the position of President of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.It is a matter of great concern to us all to find our Empire at war. I am confident that, as was the case in the war of 1914-1918, members of this Institute and of kindred Institutes and Associations will contribute in full to the Empire's needs and that in the end our cause shall triumph.I think it appropriate that I should take as the subject of my address that of the Broken Hill Lead-Silver-Zinc Industry. The subject matter of this address has been confined to the operations of Mining, Ore Dressing, Lead Smelting and Refining and production of Electrolytic Zinc in Australasia. The review of the Broken Hill Lead-SilverZinc Industry would not, of course, be complete without reference to those Australian industries which trace their origin to the Broken Hill field, but· it is thought that an outline of these industries would make thIs review too extensive.HISTORICALMany efforts have been made to translate the early history of Broken Hill and its subsequent growth throughout the years into one of the wor~d's most famous mining fields in the form of a simple story.

The Yallourn Mine (YM) commenced mining of brown coal in the 1920s under operation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), prior to it becoming privatised in 1996. The present owners of the YM, Energy Australia Yallourn (EAY), acquired the site in 2000 and intend to continue operations until scheduled closure in 2028. Brown coal extracted from the YM is fed into the Yallourn Power Station which supplies approximately 22 per cent of Victoria’s electricity. Water within the YM is collected and stored in the Township Field Fire Service Pond. Water levels within the Fire Service Pond (FSP) may fluctuate considerably depending on the requirement for storage at the site. With due consideration to the stability performance of mine batters adjoining the FSP, the authors performed slope stability assessments to evaluate the risk and consequence of batter instability during the potential pond filling as it approaches the ‘critical pool’. The critical pond is defined as the level at which the driving forces (destabilising forces) are at their greatest and the resisting forces (lake forces, friction) are at their lowest. This assessment was undertaken using the Mine Geotechnical Risk Index (MGRI) approach.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise of two-lane tunnel boring machines (TBM) driven tunnels. The length of the TBM tunnel section is approximately 4.2 km. The TBMs employed are double shield TBMs. Typical support to the segment ring while advancing a double shield TBM comprises of filling the excavated annulus between the ground and the segmental lining by injecting pea gravel, followed with primary grouting to fill between the pea gravel some distance behind the excavated face. The methodology adopted for the Legacy Way project, however, did not follow this typical approach, instead, two component grouting of the annulus was carried out.Where the annulus is typically filled with pea gravel, support is provided to the segment ring very close to the end of the tail shield, whereas in the case of two component grout this is not practical as the risk of grouting in the tail shield is high. The staging of the two component grout injection, the grout early age strength properties become key issues in ensuring that the segment ring leaving the TBM tail shield is stable and can support the necessary external loads.Two-component grout is a grout with two components, cementitious grout (component A) and accelerator (component B), commonly adopted for earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM. The grout reaches its thixotropic state in a matter of seconds providing initial support for the segment rings. Manual injection of two component grout to fill the bore annulus was carried out in stages leaving a portion of the segment rings unsupported. Ring stability during TBM advance was provided by a combination of ram thrust and the segment circumferential joint shear connectors.This paper outlines the design considerations such as rock load derivation by probabilistic analysis carried out utilising the software JBlock, 3D finite element analyses using the software Strand7 for ring stability and the testing and back analysis of the shear connector load bearing behaviour. Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.

The water pollution hazard posed by the derelict Conrad mine site, to the water and associated stream sediment of Borah and Maids Creeks and the nearby Copeton Dam storage, has been assessed. Mine water, tailings and tailings dump leachate have polluted water and stream sediments in Borah Creek downstream of the mine site. Acidity, arsenic, copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc are the principal pollutants. Under dry and low flow conditions, mine water was found to be the dominant polluting source, however, leachate and run-off from tailings dumps were also significant under and following wet conditions. Soluble arsenic, lead, iron and silver species in mine water and leachate were found to be rapidly incorporated into sediments, but acidity, copper, and zinc persisted in the creek water. Under low flow conditions, the water of Maids Creek is polluted with copper and zinc (up to 4.4 and 34 mg/l for copper and zinc respectively) and the pH is decreased (from pH 5 - 7 to pH 3 - 6) by entry of Borah Creek water. Values found in Maids Creek were variable and related to flow regime and distance downstream from Borah Creek confluence. Water in Copeton Dam storage, having a much larger volume of water with a higher bicarbonate buffering capacity (50mg/l versus 15mg/1), is not affected by entry of Maids Creek water. Polluted sediment from Borah Creek has contaminated Maids Creek for 2km downstream to Copeton Dam storage. Stream sediment downstream of the Borah Creek confluence, contains up to 1.0% As and 1.4% Pb in the less than 200 micron size fraction. Under high flow conditions, arsenic was found to be moved out from the mine site as insoluble species, associated with suspended sediment in Run-off.
