A detailed treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located near a linear discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility, and porosity are uniform, but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. These results generalize previously published works which assumed the permeability ratio for media on different sides of the discontinuity was zero, one, or infinity. One application of this material would be to facilitate detection of facies changes or fluid-fluid contacts by transient testing. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables examined includes dimensionless time from 0.1 to 100, rnohility ratio from 0.001 to 1000 and specific compressibility ratio from 0.001 to 1000. For dimensionless tinze less than 0.4, the pressure behavior is essentially that of a well in an infinite reservoir. Thus, reservoir properties near the well may be estimated in the usual manner. Using an overlay technique to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves, it is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time , at which a match occurs into the equation where is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Because of both the complexity of the solutions and limited computer facilities, well interference problems were not examined extensively. However, it was found that well interference may be masked by the discontinuity in some cases. By superposition of the results of constant rate fluid production, the problenz of pressure buildup may be treated. Such results show that for early shut-in times correct values for the transnzissibility are obtained from conventional semilog plotting. However, erroneous values of the static reservoir pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION Transient well testing has yielded estimates of such reservoir parameters as static reservoir pressure, permeability. porosity, and well bore effects. In most tests, it was assumed that the reservoirs were homogeneous and iso-tropic. Anisotropic media' and radial discontinuities were considered.'.' Various studies have been made on multiple-layer reservoirs." ' Linear discontinuities have been described for problems of one-dimensional flow.' In the present paper, a mathematical treatment is given for a well located near a linear discontinuity in an otherwise infinite medium (see Fig. 1). An actual reservoir analogy would be a well in a relatively thin reservoir near a fluid-fluid contact, or a well located in a reservoir exhibiting a sudden change in rock and formation characteristics, such as thickness, porosity, or permeability. A sudden change in porosity or permeability may be caused by clay fill or other types of facies changes. Sudden thickness changes niay be the result of such geological formations as buried shore lines and channel deposits. In otherwise uniform formations, a linear discontinuity may be caused by fluid-fluid interfaces such as oil-water contacts. 3s-oil contacts, or gas-water contacts.

Aclivilies of magnesium in liquid Alg-Si alloys have been delermined between 5 and 60 at. pcl Si, close to the melling point of Mg2Si, by an improved isopieslic melhod. Silicon specinrens, held in alumina crucibles and graplrile conlainevs of special design, were healed in a letrlpevalure gvadient and equilibrated with mag-nesilcrrl rapor in a closed lilanium system. The ther-madynamic Junctions were calculated and compared with the thermodyuamic properties of the other three mg- Gvoup IVB systems. Lattice paramelers of three Mg2X compounds were measured. The bonding in the Mg2X compounds is largely covalent with small and uarying amounts of metallic and ionic conlvibutions. The Mg-Si phase diagram1 has one congruent melting compound, Mg2Si, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and very limited terminal solid solubilities. Little information is available on the thermodynamic properties of this system. The free energy of formation of Mg2Si has been determined by the Knudsen cell technique2 in the range 572" to 680oC, by the transportation method3 between 858" and 950oC, and by the electromotive-force method4 in the range 400o to 600°C. Kubaschewski and villa5 and caulfield6 have measured the heat of formation of Mg2Si. An electromotive-force study of magnesium-rich liquid alloys was recently published by Sryvalin el al.7 The present investigation was undertaken to complete a general survey of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVB systems, i.e., Mg-Pb,a9,Mg-Sn,10,11 mg-Ge,12and Mg-Si. An isopiestic technique, previously developed for similar measurements on liquid Mg-sn11 and Mg-Ge alloys,12 was modified for the Mg-Si system. Specimens of the nonvolatile component, silicon, were contained in dense alumina crucibles placed inside covered graphite crucibles which were heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known vapor pressure. The alumina crucibles prevented contact between the highly corrosive liquid Mg-Si alloys and graphite. The graphite cruci- bles effectively preserved the high-temperature equilibrium composition of the liquid alloys containing highly volatile magnesium on termination of the experiments during the quench to room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silicon of semiconductor-grade purity (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Brevard, N.C.) and 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) were used. Graphite crucibles with press-fitted lids were machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The alumina crucibles had a purity of 99.7+ pct (Triangle RR grade, Morganite, Inc., Long Island City, N.Y.). In preliminary runs the liquid alloys were contained in graphite crucibles following the exact procedure developed for the Mg-Ge system.'2 These runs failed due to appreciable reaction between the molten Mg-Si alloys and graphite, and the results have been discarded. The procedure was then modified and the Mg-Si alloys were subsequently held in alumina crucibles. For most of the runs alumina crucibles of known weight and approximately 6.3 mm ID, 12.5 mm height, 1.0 mm wall thickness were loaded with weighed amounts of silicon and encapsuled in tightly covered weighed graphite crucibles 5/16 in. ID, 2 in. helght, 3/32 in. wall thickness). The graphite crucibles were machined from rods which were 85 pct of the theoretical density. These crucibles were therefore sufficiently porous so as to permit magnesium vapor to effuse through the silicon under the experimental conditions of approximately 970O to 1220°C and 1 day equilibration time. However, negligible magnesium was lost from the crucible during the quench due to the slow effusion rate through the pores of the graphite. The inner alumina crucible prevented the liquid alloys from contacting the graphite, and the very tightly fitting graphite crucible lids served to retain any magnesium vaporizing from the alloys inside the crucibles during the quenching step.12 The loaded silicon-alumina-graphite cells were positioned, one above another, on a 16-in.-long titanium thermocouple well and tied securely to the titanium tube with thin molybdenum wires held in grooves around the circumference of the graphite crucibles. A thin (0.005-in.) molybdenum strip prevented contact between the graphite crucibles and the titanium. This assembly was lowered into a titanium reaction tube (la in. ID, 16 in. long, $ in. wall thickness) closed on one end which contained a 11/2-in.-long cylinder of magnesium at the bottom. The inner titanium thermocouple well was positioned eccentrically in the large tube because of the eccentric mounting of the cells on the well. The relative costs of heating a reservoir by steam injection and by combustion have been examined. The comparison was based on a model similar to that proposed by Chu.' The cost of boiler feed water, the price of fuel, pressure and plant capacity were parameters in determin-ing the costs of air compression and steam generation. The analyses compare the cost of heating to the same radius by the two methods. Results suggest that the two primary factors for comparison are the price of fuel and the amount of crude burned during underground combustion. The cost of fuel has a greater effect on the cost of heat from steam than it does on its cost by combustion. As a result, analyses indicate that when the price of fuel is low, steam may be unequivocally cheaper than air. The influence of heat loss is such, however, that as the heated radius increases combustion becomes relatively more competitive depending upon the amount of crude burned. This implies that steam may be cheaper for small stimulation jobs (huff and puff) but combustion may be more economically attractive for heating large areas (flooding). INTRODUCTION Use of thermal methods of recovery is an accepted fact today. After an induction period of several years, processes are being widely used that involve reservoir heating to augment recovery. Of the several techniques, steam injection and forward combustion appear to be destined to dominate the field. Although the objectives of both are the same, the basic differences between generating heat in situ and injecting heat after surface generation influence the cost in different ways. This study compares the cost of heating a reservoir either by steam injection or by forward combustion. There has been no consideration of recovery. Presumably, recovery from the swept region would be high in either case. The sole consideration was the cost of heating to the same radial distance by either process. PROCEDURE THE MODEL The basis for comparison was a mathematical model similar to that used by Chu' for combustion. The model simulates a radial heat wave in two-dimensional cylindricaI coordinates. It includes heat generation, conduction and convection within the reservoir and conduction in the bounding formations. Thus, heat losses from the formation are considered. Three significant modifications were made. 1. Equal logarithmic increments rather than equal increments were used for the mesh spacing in the r direction. By this technique large distances were simulated with relatively few mesh spaces. 2. A backward difference approximation to the convection term was used to avoid troublesome oscillations which result from a central difference approximation when the convection term is large. 3. The radial increments of the combustion zone motion were not necessarily uniquely related to the mesh configuration. The cumbersome step function introduced by the heat of vaporization of steam was circumvented by assuming the enthalpy of the steam to be a linear function of temperature between reservoir temperature and steam temperature. This is equivalent to assuming an average heat capacity numerically equal to the difference between the enthalpy of saturated steam and the enthalpy of water at reservoir temperature divided by the difference between the two temperatures. Heat losses obtained by this model are in essential agreement with those obtained by the analytical solution of Rubenshtein.' A detailed description of the model is presented in the Appendix. Using the model, the times required to heat to particular radial distances were obtained as a function of injection rate and other physical parameters. For the steam case, injected fluid was assumed to be saturated steam at pressures of either 500, 1,000 or 1,500 psia. The corresponding temperatures are 467, 544 and 596F, respectively. Thickness ranged from 10 to 50 ft and injection rate ranged from 100,000 to 1 million Ib/D. Reservoir and overburden temperatures at the injection well were assumed to be that of saturated steam at the injection pressure. The effect of maintaining the overburden temperature at the well at a different temperature (initial reservoir temperature) was examined with no significant change in behavior. The influence of wellbore heat losses for the steam case was determined in the following manner. The rates of heat loss as a function of time were estimated using an approach similar to that suggested by Ramey." he data were based on injection through 2%-in. tubing in 7-in. casing. Integration of these data over the entire iniection period yielded the total heat loss. Total heat losses were then corrected to their equivalents in steam (this number resulted from dividing the total heat loss by the latent heat). This was considered additional steam required to accomplish the reservoir heating and the total cost was increased accordingly.

In brief, this is the story of an attempt to Americanize a process originally developed in Europe. The story will be recited in two sections, the first dealing with the process as developed by the European engineers; the second containing the improvements and modifications of American origin, together with some details of the operating results of the unit as finally assembled. Developments in other directions in this same field have not, up to the present, pointed out an economic future for the process, therefore our record here is largely a report of development progress. Whether some particularly favorable location will be found at some future time for a commercial installation cannot as yet be foretold. The project is now at a standstill. The peculiar tools of the electrometallurgist should be of great interest to the zinc smelter. The low thermal efficiency of the zinc retort, its comparatively small-scale unit and its intermittent cycle as it stood in 1925, should make this art a particularly fertile field for the electric furnace. Yet in spite of years of work recorded in volumes of literature, and an expenditure of large sums of money, there is not a single electrothermic zinc smelter operating anywhere in the world. In this industry the electric furnace plays only a secondary part today. Historical The first serious proposal to use the electric furnace for the smelting of zinc ores was made by the Cowles Brothers in 1885, but their experimental work did not advance the art to any extent. The next investigator of this field was Dr. Gustav DeLaval, a Swedish engineer well known to the industrial world through his development of the centrifugal and the steam turbine. The DeLaval cream separator is a familiar household appliance in most parts of the world. Although Dr. DeLaval commenced his experiments in the field of electric zinc smelting in 1893, it was not until 1898 that he had a practicable furnace, even then operating but intermittently. Often, as viewed by the public and many in the mining industry, abandoned limestone and gypsum quarries offer a simple, economic solution to the twofold problem of solid-waste disposal and land reclamation. In a state where about 75% of the existing quarries are in hydrologic connection with carbonate aquifiers the rationale for considering the storage of solid waste in them must be critically examined. Consistent with the requirements of water resources protection, criteria are suggested to evaluate the potentiality of using abandoned limestone and gypsum quarries as sanitary landfill sites.

The leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which, according to Pélabon,' is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgstroma 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343", if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430" if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S33 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)z.Sbz03 melts at 517°C.6 4. The volatility of Sb2Ss and SbzOs, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures. THE amount of gold that occurs in a ton of milling ore from most of the large-scale copper mines is so small that unusual care and special attention are necessary to recover it. In some cases the gold is not considered important enough to warrant daily assays of the various products. Considering the large tonnage of copper ores that are now concentrated by flotation, as computed in a recent review, the gross gold content is surprisingly large, probably amounting to over 10 million dollars per year in the United States. The indications are that in many of the copper-milling operations with gold content under $1 per ton, only 50 per cent. of the gold is recovered in the flotation concentrates. Lime is generally used as a depressant for pyrite in the flotation circuit. The authors have shown that high lime or a solution high in calcium ions is also a depressant for gold. Their experiments on several well-known ores show that by careful regulation of the alkalinity of the mill solutions, a higher flotation recovery of the gold can be obtained, together with equally good copper recovery in a good grade of copper concentrates. In cyanidation for the recovery of gold, the best accepted practice demands that the mill solutions be tested and regulated by simple chemical reactions at definite periods during treatment or with each change in the treatment. It is similarly important for the recovery of gold that the solution in the flotation circuit be analyzed for calcium ions at regular periods and at each step in the flotation practice. The lime should be added when and where needed and not in excessive amounts at the head of the mill.

Salt production in Louisiana and Texas at the present time is entirely from salt domes of the interior and coastal groups. Before and during the Civil War salt was recovered from numerous salines and salt springs by evaporation in open kettles. The location of these in nearly every instance was near what is now known to be a salt dome, and the source of the salt in the salines and spring waters was that in the salt core. The tops of many of the shallower domes have been subjected to erosion1. The discovery that the salt occurred as large masses of rock salt in the form of domes was made in May, 1802, at Avery Island, La., by John Marsh Avery, grandson of the original owner, John C. Marsh, who built the old salt works in 18122. The first shaft for mining was sunk on the Avery dome in 1867 by Chouteau and Price. It was 90 ft. deep, about 58 ft. being in solid salt. It was abandoned in 1870. There are three general groups or fields of salt domes; interior Louisiana in northern Louisiana, interior Texas in northeastern Texas, and the coastal domes nearer the Gulf Coast and extending from the Mississippi River to the Rio Grande. This last group contains by far the greatest number of domes. As many of the coastal domes especially are prolific producers of petroleum and a few of sulfur, their geology has been intensively studied and fully covered in the literature. The depth to the top of the salt varies from near the surface, where shallow ground waters have dissolved the salt to just below recent deposits, to several thousand feet, where the depth has been cstimated only by geophysical methods. The diameter of the salt core varies from less than 1/2 mile to over 2 miles. Only domes where the salt is comparatively near the surface have been developed for commercial salt. Three deeper domes, which will be described later, have recently been developed or are in process of development, as a source of brine for chemical use. There are three general groups or fields of salt domes; interior Louisiana in northern Louisiana, interior Texas in northeastern Texas, and the coastal domes nearer the Gulf Coast and extending from the Mississippi River to the Rio Grande. This last group contains by far the greatest number of domes. As many of the coastal domes especially are prolific producers of petroleum and a few of sulfur, their geology has been intensively studied and fully covered in the literature. The depth to the top of the salt varies from near the surface, where shallow ground waters have dissolved the salt to just below recent deposits, to several thousand feet, where the depth has been cstimated only by geophysical methods. The diameter of the salt core varies from less than 1/2 mile to over 2 miles. Only domes where the salt is comparatively near the surface have been developed for commercial salt. Three deeper domes, which will be described later, have recently been developed or are in process of development, as a source of brine for chemical use. An investigation was performed to determine conditions for optimizing the spacing of simultaneously initiated multiple explosive columns. This was done by using models of mortar, dolomite, and Plexiglas with 10-grain mild detonating fuse as the explosive charge. It was desired to simulate blastholes with multiple primers initiated by detonating fuse or when high-velocity explosives are used in low-velocity materials. It was found that optimum spacing between multiple charges was strongly influenced by charge length. At less than optimum charge length, the spacing at which complete shearing was possible between adjacent charges decreased exponentially with a subsequent loss of broken material volume. For charges fired simultaneously, larger burdens and spacings were possible as compared to those necessary for single-crater charges. For each material studied, there was a characteristic optimum charge length and a maximum attainable spacing at any given burden. Proper selection of the spacing distance between charges is fundamental to successful blasting. Its value directly affects the cost of drilling and explosives used per unit of broken material. In addition, the choice of a spacing that is Compatible with a given set of blasting conditions aids in the control of fragmentation sizing, ground vibrations, overbreak, and throw which in turn, influence other production costs. For example, normally loaded blastholes that are spaced too closely invariably promote overbreak and usually give coarse fragmentation. Unless care is taken, airblast and violent flyrock will occur and under certain conditions cutoffs and misfires may result. Too large a spacing, on the other hand, frequently leads to conditions that form bootlegs or toes. The choice of a particular spacicg to use, however, is largely a matter of individual experience and judgment, usually based on trial and error. Very little is known or can be found in the literature with regard to how the spacing between charges is related to field conditions and charge geometry. As a general rule, the firing time sequence of adjacent charges and properties of a material are thought to have the most significant influence on the spacing distance best suited for any given field condition. For example, delayed initiation of adjacent charges usually always requires a closer spacing than when charges are fired at the same time. This should be expected if one considers that the energy normally dissipated and lost in the surrounding ground from charges fired independently would be captured and utilized for breaking material between charges when they are initiated together. Spacing can be extended also when charges are aligned with structural planes of a material, such as jointing, along which shearing is relatively easy. It is customary to relate the spacing (S) between charges to their common burden (B) in the form of a spacing ratio, or SIB. The burden normally is considered as the optimum depth or distance from any single charge perpendicular to the nearest free or open face at which the desired fragmentation and maximum crater yield are obtained. For production blasting, value of the ratio is generally considered to vary from 1 to 2, depending on conditions.1-6 When adjacent charges are fired independent of one another, the value varies from 1 to about 1.4, the closer amount being employed to square corners or produce craters having the ideal 90" apex angle. The larger ratio is the geometric balance value for craters having an apex angle of 135". The basic ideal crater forms in the plane of the charge diameter for charges fired independently are shown in Fig. 1. In the event charges are fired simultaneously, geometric balance in the plane of their charge diameters suggests that a spacing ratio near 2 would be appropriate, as illustrated by Fig. 2. In practice, however, some compromise ratio value must be selected to conform with the specific ground conditions. An example would be where the jointing planes tend to produce 60° or 120° crater angles, the appropriate geometrically balanced charge arrangement being given by Fig. 3. In this condition, the spacing ratio is 1.15, not 1 or 1.4 as suggested for the 90° cratering of independently fired adjacent charges. In view of the foregoing, it would seem logical to assume that whenever charges all having the same burden are fired at the same time, spacing distances always can be greater than those permitted by charges fired independently. In practice this is not the case, however.

Use of the discretized batch-grinding model for the simulation of locked-cycle grinding tests from batch-grinding data is illustrated. The simulated results were compared with actual locked-cycle experimental data for the dry grinding of dolomite. To illustrate the utility of this simulation method, a number of relationships between operating and performance parameters were generated, including relations between batch grinding and the Bond test, the production rate and the circulating load, and the production rate and the product size. A large amount of testing is done each year in the mineral industry for use with grinding unit cperations, and much of the experimental test data is obtained by the tedious locked-cycle testing procedure. In addition to being experimentally complex and requiring large amounts of sample, the very nature of the locked-cycle experiment yields results that cannot readily be interpreted. The attempts that have been made to model comminution systems during the last few years may provide a better and simpler way to obtain and analyze grinding test data; these models involve elements of both fitting to "model equations" and deterministic representations.1-1 The traditional engineering design techniques for comminution systems have relied mainly upon large amounts of industrial operating data that have been correlated with locked-cycle grinding data.',' Bond's empirical mill-design procedure involving locked cycle testing remains the most generally available method to this day. The purpose of the present paper is to show how much more useful data can be obtained from a simple batch-grinding experiment that provides information which subsequently can be utilized with population balance models of the grinding process to simulate locked-cycle behavior. These simulation results can, of course, be used in Bond's general design scheme. However, the combination of batch-grinding tests and the population balance model allows many more conditions to be considered than do single laboratory tests under specific locked-cycle conditions. The use of these simulation techniques for prediction of locked-cycle behavior represents one of the first practical applications for the simulation method in comminution.

For many reasons, it appears that deep rooted, perennial shrubs offer potential for improved stabilization and provide maintenance free vegetative cover to harsh sites where perennial grasses have not been successful. The major objective was to select various shrub species of arid plants for initial soil stabilization of disturbed mining areas. The very fact that a drought-adapted shrub has a massive root system that can use moisture from a greater volume of mineral waste soil materials suggests that arid environment disturbed soils may be vegetatively stabilized using desirable forage shrubs. A secondary effort is underway to assemble information and plant materials of promising species from many arid regions of the world for reclamation of mined lands. Surprisingly, many of the better plants for arid sites are quite high in protein content. With proper management, breeding, and selection, they may prove to be very desirable livestock feed when mined lands are used in range land areas. Advancements in arid land solid waste stabilization hold favorable promise for many industries that mine and mill in arid regions for effective reclamation of disturbed areas. Particularly exciting is the possibility of establishment of high density maintenance free vegetative cover of climax vegetation that reclaims the disturbed area back to its original land use. Due to high shrub productivity, stabilization potential, nutritional quality, and reclamation success, greater use should be made of shrubs in disturbed land reclamation associated with mining and milling operations in harsh aril environments.

Iron, like other metals, solidifies through the formation of dendritic crystals; iron alloys forming solid solutions, like other solid solutions, solidify likewise through the formation of dendritic crystals. The alloying elements or impurities as well as the inclusions segregate generally in the interstices, or "fillings," between the axes and branches of the dendrites; that is, in the portions last to solidify. This results in dendritic segregation or heterogeneity, which is generally persistent and makes possible the revelation of the dendritic crystallization of the metal through the selective action of a suitable etching reagent.' For this purpose, a cuprie solution, such as Le Chatelier's, is generally used, copper being deposited on the pure, or relatively pure, ferrite present in the axes while the fillings remain free, or relatively free, from copper deposition. The dendritic structure, formed on solidification in a steel containing 0.50 per cent. carbon, 0.37 per cent. manganese, 0.12 per cent. silicon, 0.07 per cent. sulfur, and 0.035 per cent. phosphorus is shown, after treatment with Le Chatelier reagent, in Fig. 1 under a magnification of 8 diameters. Commercial steel always contains inclusions of manganese sulfide, which are located in the fillings of the dendrites. Comstock has shown that boiling sodium picrate imparts a dark coloration to these inclusions. We find that this reagent likewise reveals dendritic segregations in commercial steel, as shown in Fig. 2, under a magnification of 8 diameters. which represents the same spot as that shown in Fig. 1. The fillings have been darkened while the axes remain white, the action being, therefore, the reverse of that of cupric reagents. On closer examination, under higher magnification (Fig. 3) it is found that the picrate blackens the small particles of manganese sulfide, that these are frequently surrounded by a rim of white, or relatively white, ferrite, and that both the ferrite
