1. INTRODUCTION In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center required that a large reverberation acoustic facility be constructed. This facility was designed to determine the sound power level emissions of mining equipment, especially continuous miners and jumbo drills. A contract for a conceptual design of a reverberation chamber was awarded to Wyle Laboratories of Huntsville, AL, which had extensive experience in the design, construction, and accreditation of acoustical reverberation chambers. The following standards were referenced as guidelines for the design of the chamber: ANSI S1.31-1980, “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Broadband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms” and ANSI S1.32-1980: “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Discrete-Frequency and Narrowband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms.” Specific requested criteria included that the room be large enough to accommodate typically large mining equipment and that there be adequate acoustical modal density in the frequency range of interest. It was also required that the room dimensions would support broadband acoustical measurements down to the 100 Hz third octave band. With the closing of the Bureau of Mines in 1996, this reverberation chamber lay dormant for a number of years. However, this facility is now part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). One of NIOSH’s missions is to decrease noise induced hearing loss among the nation’s mineworkers. To this end, PRL researchers are refurbishing and instrumenting this reverberation chamber to facilitate assessment of the various engineering controls being developed to decrease the sound power level emissions of mining equipment. Early on, this work has sought to bring the chamber up to the level of ISO 3743-21 standard for engineering grade measurements for broad-band noise, with a longer range goal of improving the lab to meet the requirements of ISO 37412standard for broadband precision grade measurements. 2. DESIGN OF THE REVERBERATION CHAMBER The nominal room dimensions are 18.3 meters long by 10.3 meters wide with a height of 6.7 meters. The chamber volume is 1,286 cubic meters. These dimensions are important, as few reverberation facilities are large enough to test typically huge mining equipment. The floor is poured concrete with a sealer to make it acoustically reflective. The walls are built of hollow concrete block, 16 inches long x 8 inches high by 12inches thick. In responding to why some longwall roadway development rates are different among mines, the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG) of Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has initiated a benchmarking study to survey each longwall mine to determine the correlation between roadway development practices and roadway development performances. This paper describes a web-based relational database system which has been developed purposely to monitor the performance of Australian longwall roadway developments aimed at assessing both the physical and operational factors which could influence roadway development practices and their performance indicators. Statistical analysis of an earlier survey suggested that continuous miner units that achieved more than 1750 m were units mining two-heading development.

Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

Variations of the temperature and steam/moisture content of the air with distance and time are modelled for a single airway. The input for the simulation is an air temperature that varies with time, together with the moisture/steam content that results, for example, from a fire with a given distribution of heat and of fume concentrations at the beginning of the airway. The transport of heat and moisture to the surface of the wallrock is assumed to be simultaneous. Such multiphase convection may result in evaporation from the moist wall close to the fire and recondensation downstream. The modelling of this non-linear effect is a unique feature of the new simulation. A new analytical solution is used to calculate the conduction of transient heat within the rock mantle, which, in the event of a fire, is typically a short-term process. This allows for an arbitrary variation of surface temperature with time - unlike that permitted by the age function solution, which is limited to stepped temperature changes. An iterative numerical scheme that has recently been developed to simulate mine climate is used to calculate the coupled transient heat conduction and multiphase surface heat transport in successive length increments along the airway. To demonstrate the simulation procedure a numerical example is presented in which a fire with a given distribution of heat and fume concentrations with time is located at the beginning of an airway

THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

A reconnaissance for sources of scandium and a metallurgical investigation of recovery methods for byproduct scandium from uranium mill solutions were conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The work on scandium was undertaken to obtain information on domestic resources and to explore and develop recovery procedures in consonance with the Bureau's long-range program for conservation and wise utilization of mineral resources. The element scandium is widely distributed in the earth's crust in trace amounts, but it seldom occurs as an important constituent in any mineral. An exception is thortveitite, (Sc,Y)2 Si207) a rare mineral that contains various amounts of scandium and yttrium and may contain up to 42 percent scandium oxide (SC203). Knowledge of the chemistry of scandium has expanded rapidly in recent years (1, 4, 9)4 but only fragmentary information is available about the metal because it is still largely a laboratory curiosity without established uses (2, 3). A recent study shows some of the physical proper-ties of the metal are (1) density of 3.05 grams per cubic centimeter) (2) melting point of 1,540° C, (3) hexagonal close-packed structure) (4) hardness of about 50 Brinell (500-kilogram load), and (5) an alloy behavior similar to yttrium and rare-earth metals (2). The price of $2,850 a pound for scandium oxide of 99.9 percent purity and $2,700 a pound for oxide of 99 percent purity reflects the scarcity and complex chemistry of the element.

Newmont’s Lone Tree Mine, located in northern Nevada, is an open pit gold operation supported by a standard truck and shovel mine production fleet (Caterpillar 785Bs and Hitachi EXs). Newmont continues to search for ways to decrease capital expenditure and lower operating cost, hence the implementation of the Ultra Light Body (ULW) concept. The fundamental idea associated with the ULWs is the increased payload potential. Economic justification comes from successful achievement of additional payload, within the truck’s rated GVW, without changing its loading and hauling characteristics. The increase in payload capacity allows equivalent tonnage movement using fewer trucks.

Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

I would like to share some observations about the mining business and place the ongoing discussion in the context of our changed world. The mining industry practices its trade in a universe defined by prices, laws and governments. Prices, as in what the industry is paid for what it produces, and the costs of goods and services. Laws that have to be transparent and fair. And governments that the industry prefers to be stable and supportive of the industry, and certainly not corrupt. However, the day-to-day realities of the mining business in 2000 are not what they were 10 years ago. Several events have occurred that have resulted in a less populated workplace that is obliged to work much smarter and faster. These include real declining prices for most mineral commodities; low and diminishing returns to company shareholders; massive restructuring of the industry through mergers, partnerships and alliances; gold’s changed role from reserve currency to just another commodity; the growing importance of native title and the startling imperatives of “sustainable development.” In addition, the “borderless world” now means that resource companies will need to pass the test of being responsible corporate guests who respect and enhance the social, moral and societal values of their host countries.

Decision-making regarding plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g per ton of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point, with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

Large amounts of limestone fines co-produced during the processing of crushed lime-stone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid. This reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities to within about 10 km (6 miles) of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power-generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufacturers and research scientists. There is a concern that CO2 generated from human activities is contributing to climatic and environmental changes. Approximately one-third of anthropogenic CO2 emissions come from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. Each power plant is capable of emitting several million tons of CO2 annually. A variety of other industrial processes, such as cement manufacture, oil refining, and iron and steel production, also emit large amounts of CO2. The level of atmospheric CO2 can be reduced by capturing CO2 from point-source emissions and storing or sequestering it in isolation from the atmosphere (U.S. Department of Energy, 2003). In 1999, G.H. Rau and K. Caldeira proposed a geochemistry-based method that is referred to as accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) in a paper titled ?Accelerating carbonate dissolution to sequester carbon dioxide in the ocean ? geochemical implications.?

Ghana’s physiographic and geologic features are the basis for its long mining history. The Gold Coast colony has been a significant producer of gold. The gold of the Akan forest (Ghana) was a terminus for caravans that plied Saharan trade routes. Now it also produces significant quantities of manganese, bauxite, and diamonds In addition, the country produces kaolinite, silica for glass, salt, and both aggregate and dimensioned stone. Most secondary minerals are consumed locally but some amounts do find international markets. Ghana revised the mining laws and regulations in 1986. These revised laws dramatically increased gold production and improved the country’s economy. The success of these laws spawned imitators in other African states such as Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Representatives of these countries claim Ghana was their model. Environmental regulations exist but an intensive adversarial atmosphere is lacking. Ghana has also offered the mining industry incentives like accelerated depreciation rates and exemption from import duties on related supplies and capital equipment. The country has also pursued an aggressive policy to restore the nation’s business infrastructure.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. The potential of uirought tungsten- and tantaluw-rich alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system was investigated for high-strength structural applications above 2500° F. Appreciable strengthening of tung-sten and tantalum—essentially attributable to solid-solzction effects—was obtained with binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys. Tensile strengths as high as 67,000 psi were achieved at 3000 OF. ThE quest for wrought structural materials which possess good strength properties at temperatures above 2000°F has led to a considerable research effort during the past decade. In addition to exploring the potential of various high-melting-point refractory metals (such as molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, and tungsten) for very high-temperature structural applications, alloy-development programs have been undertaken to achieve greater strengths than could be achieved with unalloyed refractory metals. The methods of strengthening refractory metal alloys have included both solid-solution and dispersion strengthening. General relationships among the relevant properties (melting point, recrystallization temperature, and high-temperature strength) of refractory metals indicate that the highest strengths at temperatures of 2500°F or higher would be obtained with tungsten-or tantalum-base alloys. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the high-temperature strength potential of solid-solution strengthened alloys based on the binary system W-Ta; to effect further strengthening, minor additions of molybdenum and columbium (at the 6 and 12 pct levels) were made. The portion of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb quaternary alloy system of interest is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The component metals—W, Ta, Mo, and Cb—have a bcc structure at all temperatures, and their binary systems are mutually completely soluble.' Complete solid solubility in the W-Ta-Mo and W-Ta-Cb alloy systems has been demonstrated,' and, therefore, it was expected that the quarternary alloys of the system would also exhibit complete solid solubility at all temperatures. In the virtual absence of contamination by interstitial elements, all the alloys would be truly solid-solution strengthened. Twenty specific compositions of this investigation included binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system as well as unalloyed tungsten and tantalum. The compositions are shown in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Consumable-electrode vacuum-arc melting with ac power was used to produce small laboratory-sized, cylindrically shaped ingots (1-1/4 in. in diameter and 2 to 3-1/2 in. long) of the twenty compositions. A furnace was specially constructed to melt as many as four electrode rods simultaneously into molds lined with tungsten or tantalum sheet. High-purity rods of tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and columbium were used for consumable electrodes; the diameter of each rod was determined by the desired weight percentage of the component metal in a given alloy. The details of the construction and operation of the melting furnace will be discussed in another p~blication.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. VI Infiltration Pond Tests. VIII Final Report.

Newmont Mining has a large, integrated gold-mining operation in northern Nevada with several mines, stockpiles and processing facilities. There are more than 90 defined metallurgical ore types and more than 60 defined gold-recovery process options. Newmont developed a mine plan and process model to take better advantage of the available synergies at its Nevada mines. This plan includes a mixed integer and linear programming optimization tool. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada planning group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. These changes have allowed a reduction in mine engineering staff and have increased the effectiveness of mine planning.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. The first is an invisible ink exercise, titled "Drill Rig Incident" (DRI) (Photo 2); the second is a 3-D slide reel training aid, "Wearing Hearing Protection Properly" (WHPP) (Photo 3). The foundations for the new South Viaduct Bridge in San Francisco were extremely challenging due to the requirement for very large and deep piles installed adjacent to historic structures. Drilled shafts up to 12? foot in diameter were constructed to a maximum depth of 200? feet in alluvial soils and Franciscan Bedrock using an oscillator system for the installation of the permanent steel casing. This paper provides an overview of the construction techniques, the equipment, and the challenges associated with constructing 12? foot diameter shafts on this very complex project in one of the nation?s nicest landscape setting.
