Premier Diamond Mine exploits a kimberlite orebody using cave mining methods. A drilling level is established at the base of a block of ore to effect undercutting that leads to caving of the overlying ore. A second level is developed some 15 metres below the undercutting level to allow extraction of the ore once it has caved. As much as 45 per cent of the rock is removed on the extraction level creating a series of pillars. Undercutting creates abutment stresses, as high as 3 times the virgin stress, which affect the rock mass to a distance of 20 metres from the undercut face on the undercut level and on the extraction level 15 metres below. If the extraction level is completely developed prior to undercutting, where stress levels exceed 20 percent of the rock mass strength, extensive rock mass and support damage occurs as the undercut passes overhead. Rock mass damage takes the form of movement along existing joints and minor shear failure through intact rock. Support damage takes the form of cracking in rigid concrete linings. Where induced stresses exceed 50 per cent of the rock mass strength it is often impractical to keep excavations on the extraction level open. Rock mass damage takes the form of extensive failure of the rock in shear which evidences itself as propagation of the fracture zone around tunnels and footwall heave. Support damage results in destruction of shotcrete linings and concrete footwalls. As the interbolt support fails, badly fractured rock ravels around the steel tendons. Observation and monitoring at Premier Mine and on other cave mines has shown that induced stress levels and consequent damage are a function of :?the extraction ratio on the undercut and extraction level prior to undercutting ?the shape of the undercut face ?the rate of undercut advance ?the distance of leads and lags between adjacent tunnels on the undercut level. To ensure the stability of excavations, all of the above parameters must be carefully planned and the planned mining sequence rigidly enforced. The minimum of development is completed on the extraction level prior to the undercut passing overhead. Required development is then rapidly completed once the area has been de-stressed. Support is installed in three phases: ?Rockbolts are installed as soon as excavations are developed ?Wire mesh, steel tendon straps and a layer of shotcrete sufficient to protect the mesh and straps from damage by blasting and LHD loading is installed as soon as practical thereafter. Inevitably the shotcrete lining has to be replaced once the undercut has passed overhead.. ?Rigid shotcrete linings and concreted footwalls are completed only after the undercut has passed overhead and the area has been de-stressed.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how site-specific slope stability analysis can be performed entirely from the desktop with satellite images, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and slope stability software packages. This type of analysis would effectively eliminate or restrict the need for expensive field testing of geotechnical properties of a hillside, pit wall, berm, or embankment, and would be particularly useful for slope failure mitigation at remote or otherwise inaccessible locations.

For more than 15 years after the Northparkes orebodies were first discovered in 1976, the project was delayed by the need to find an economic way of mining the low-grade E26 deposit. The decision to use a low-cost block caving method to mine the orebody was made in the early-1990s; but the project's future did not solidify until 1993 when a radical new approach was adopted which sought to integrate business imperatives with technology and organisation strategies. The approach led to the establishment of a strategic vision which tied together all the components that could have a major impact on the project, to provide a framework for guiding strategic choices. The strategic vision strived to break away from the old rules of how mines are organised and operated; and involved finding imaginative new ways to radically redesign mining processes to achieve quantum leaps in performance.

A recent Evening Post Headline read 'Officialdoms Inertia Risking Millions in Growth Strategy'. The article beneath that headline outlined the difficulties encountered by the Government's growth strategy projects and included the paragraph 'public efforts by Government to brush up communication of the widespread nature of its growth strategy is believed to have been matched by efforts in private by some ministers to overcome their frustration at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system'. The article went on to point out that these delays could cost New Zealand millions of dollars in lost overseas exchange savings. We as responsible citizens should be appalled or at least concerned that such costly delays should or even could occur. But those on the outside of the system who spend much of their working life prodding, reminding, pleading, cajoling, even begging, the bureaucracy should be excused a smirk or a smile or even a good belly laugh. The Minister is usually a part of the bureaucracy passing judgment on someone else's proposals. This time the Government has plans of its own. Plans which it wishes to see implemented as rapidly as possible and even with the assistance of the precautionary National Development Act with its 'fast track' provisions those plans have got bogged down in the bureaucratic machine which this Government has done as much as any other to create. In the circumstances, the thought of Her Majesty's Ministers frustrated at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system is not unpleasing.

The largest investment in mining equipment in Caterpillar?s history ? The F series mechanical and electrical drive trucks ? is rapidly advancing. Caterpillar showcased the 793F and 797F mechanical drive trucks and the 795F ac electric drive truck at MinExpo in 2008 and have continued testing since then. The 793F and the 797F have accumulated more than 75,000 hours of field testing and have proven their performance capabilities and their durability. The new Cat C175 engine that powers them has racked up 130,000 hours of field testing in mining trucks and more than 120,000 hours in power systems. Because of the success of these field-follow programs, the 793F is targeted to go into full production within a few months and the 797F late this year. Caterpillar engineers have been testing two 795F ac prototypes at the Tucson Proving Grounds in Arizona. The development program has provided input for the construction of a new 795F ac in Decatur, IL. The new truck recently shipped to a copper mine in North America where it will serve as the first field-follow 795F ac as it works at the mine. The 313-t- (345-st-) capacity 795F ac will enter a new size class for Caterpillar, and, as a result, the primary focus of the Caterpillar ac electric program has been on the 795F ac. The commercial launch date will be defined as the field-follow program progresses. ?It?s fitting that soon after producing the 50,000th Cat off-highway truck, we are now shipping our first ultra-class ac electric drive truck to a mine,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining. ?Our new trucks further solidify our position as the one manufacturer to provide unparalleled options and unmatched customer support.?

During the last 25 years, multistage mixer-settlers have been used extensively for liquid ion exchange work. The mixer-settler has the advantage of being a compact device in which a large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area. They are particularly advantageous for the separation of rare earths. Most of the adjacent rare earths have separation factors which are near one, which means that a large number of stages are needed to produce a good separation. When two elements (m, n) are extracted simultaneously, the separation factor (ßm, n) is defined as: [ ] where Ym, Yn are the molarities of the respective elements in the organic phase and Xm, Xn, are their molarities in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. The industrial consumption of rare earth oxides rose to over 6800 tons in 1968, an increase of 33% over 1967.1 The increased production and demand for rare earth and lanthanum chlorides for petroleum cracking catalysts was one of the principal factors in this increased consumption of rare earths. In 1968 approximately 59% of the rare earth oxides produced were used for gasoline cracking catalysts in the form of rare earth and lanthanum chlorides. There was also an increase in the sales of lanthanum oxides for use in optical lenses and in fiber optics. The future looks good for the rare earth industry. The rare earths can be expected to be used in many new products which are being developed. Until the late 1950's tributyl phosphate (TBP) was the principal solvent used in rare earth liquid ion exchange. In 1957 Peppard3 reported the use of di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a solvent for separating the rare earths. Ordinary kriging on the assumption of a gaussian error distribution and indicator kriging were used to derive the probability that a given calorific value would or would not be exceeded by coal from an area of a deposit. The two techniques led to similar probability maps despite local differences; the lack of an absolute reference makes it impossible to judge which method is better for this particular application

Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

"This paper is the second of a series of progress reports4 on a study of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States.There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value.One of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although several manganese minerals were readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.5 Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 9000 C. converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution.6 Introduction of smelter gases containing much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation, and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulpate.Another case involves a subsequent step in the hydrometallurgical process, namely, the formation of oxides of manganese with simultaneous evolution of SO2 by the heating of the MnSO4 produced by evaporating its solution.A third has to do with the roasting of zinc sulphide ores containing manganese as a preliminary to leaching. During purification of the solutions to be used for the electrolytic deposition of zinc the iron must be oxidized to make possible its removal. Manganese dioxide has been used for this purpose,7 and since manganese compounds are present in some zinc concentrates,8 it is of interest to learn what happens to the manganese in a zinc sulphide or on roasting, and what portion of the manganese in the roasted product might be available for oxidation."

Conditioning of flotation feed is an important prerequisite for efficient flotation. This process depends on parameters such as conditioning time, slurry concentration and slurry pH. The objective of this paper is to optimize the conditioning process for the flotation feed. This was achieved by first conducting preliminary experiments at constant slurry pH to determine the significant ranges of slurry concentration and conditioning time. Then, factorial experimental design (32 experiments) was used to investigate the significance of the above parameters and their interactions on flotation recovery and grade. Statistical analyses using ANOVA approach showed that flotation recovery (R) and concentrate grade (g) were affected by feed conditioning. It was found that concentrate grade was linearly proportional to the slurry concentration and conditioning time, while flotation recovery was exponentially proportional to the conditioning parameters. A contour plot of the flotation response (recovery and grade) against conditioning parameters showed that the optimum operating parameters for flotation feed conditioning was a conditioning time of 1.5 to 2 minutes and a slurry conentration of 55% to 60%.

A large body of porphyry-type copper mineralization occurs at Panguna in southern BougainviIle. It is associated with the intrusion of quartz diorite/granodiorite into andesites, particularly with the contact zone. Metasomatism of both intrusives and andesite resulted in the formation of biotite pseudomorphing hornblende and the veining of the resultant biotite diorite and biotitized andesite by quartz-chalcopyrite veins with pink orthoclase and dark biotite selvages, respectively.The orientation of intrusives and veins appears to be controlled by premineralization fault-joint patterns in the intruded andesitic Kieta Volcanics.

From 19BS thru the present, Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company has been involved in several transportation construction projects in the Seattle area. Two of these contracts, the Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, and The Seattle Bus Tunnel, had unique foundation features. MT. BAKER RIDGE TUNNEL ACCESS PITS The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel is part of the general upgrading of the I-90 freeway between I-405 and I-5 (see Fig. 1). It is located on the western shore of Lake Washington and consists of a 1300 foot long large diameter tunnel thru Mt. Baker Ridge. The ridge consists of over consolidated silts and clays overlain by a loose to medium dense silty fine sand. The water table is perched in this upper layer of material. The clays of Seattle have a history of being very sensitive to excavation. The hills are marginally stable and numerous landslides have occurred recently in the area of the tunnel. [ ]

A rapid, accurate method for predicting the dew points of gas condensate systems and their subsequent normal and retrograde phase behavior with pressure decline has been developed. The method predicts dewpoint pressure, volume percent liquid, condensate content of produced gas, and the liquid and gas compositions at pressures below the dewpoint pressure. Use of a modified form of the BWR equation of state, which was established by regression calculations on experimental data from several gas condensates, provides depletion behavior predictions that are significantly improved over predictions using K-values based on convergence pressures and Standing's correlation for density. INTRODUCTION Prediction of complex hydrocarbon-mixture thermodynamics is fundamental to reservoir and gas process engineering. In particular, accurate descriptions of phase behavior are needed to plan production operations for gas-condensate reservoirs. Although analysis of reservoir behavior during producing and cycling operations can be made for simple reservoir models, extensions of these studies to more complex reservoir systems are still difficult, both with regard to numerical techniques and the phase behavior of the fluids. This report presents a mathematical method for handling the complex phase relationships encountered in retrograde condensates; it represents an advance in reservoir behavior technology in that it will aid the development of closed-form mathematical representations of total production systems. A typical phase diagram for a complex hydrocarbon mixture is shown in Fig. 1. When the reservoir temperature T, is higher than the critical temperature Tc, and lower than the critical-condensation temperature Tct' the mixture is a gas condensate. Decreasing the pressure on a condensate while maintaining nearly constant temperature will result in two phases forming at the dew point. Further decrease in pressure will cause additional liquids to be formed. This phenomenon is called retrograde condensation. As pressure continues to decrease, normal phase behavior regions are encountered (liquid vaporizes as the pressure decreases) until the low-pressure dew point is encountered. When a gas-condensate reservoir is produced, gas is withdrawn and the volume of fluids in the reservoir remains nearly constant as the pressure declines. Heavier components tend to accumulate in the liquid phase as a result of retrograde condensation, while lighter components tend to concentrate in the vapor phase. The goal of the Bureau of Mines diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and minimize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel- powered equipment in underground mines. This program has led to a fundamental understanding of the problems and to solutions that allow diesel equipment to be used safely and effectively. This volume contains reports of the presentations made at the Bureau Technology Transfer Seminar on Diesels in Underground &fines given in Louisville, KY, and Denver, CO, on April 21 and April 23, 1987. It also contains three reports of related research, not presented at the seminar, which highlight the significant achievements of a joint US.-Canadian research program on diesel emission control technology for underground mines. Topics covered in this volume include discussions of industrial hygiene problems associated with the use of diesels, accident statistics, fire and explosion control systems, measurement of diesel pollutants, emission control techniques including engine maintenance, fuel additives, diesel particulate filters, and ventilation of diesel sections. An alternative to diesel power, the hydrogen-powered mine vehicle, is also described.

Structural blast vibration limits should be based on the strength of the structure, the stress induced by blasting, and a responsible factor of safety. In this paper a methodology that uses direct strain measurements to determine the stress induced by blasting is described. The methodology has been used to measure strain resulting from blasting, and establish appropriate blast vibration limits on a brick sewer tunnel, an underground mine heading, brick veneer houses, a water pipeline, and transmission tower foundations. An outline is given of the use of the methodology to establish limits for the main entry heading of an underground coal mine, and transmission tower footings. The methodology that is described has reduced uncertainty factors, and permitted the specification of higher blast vibration limits than had been previously used.
