Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

This Bureau of Mines report is a background study of the International Tin Agreement. Attempts at stabilizing the tin market prior to the agreement are detailed, as well as the conditions and negotiations that set up the agreement. Details of the five consecutive 5-year agreements beginning in 1956 are presented, with emphasis on membership and the agreements' primary tools: the buffer stock and export controls, Attention is focused throughout on the United States activities during the period, especially with regard to its strategic stockpile, and its involvement with the agreement culminating in its membership, for the first time, in the fifth agreement beginning in 1976. Considerations leading to the U.S. decision to join are detailed, and U.S. activities in the negotiations for the sixth agreement are presented. The status and outlook for the agreement are discussed, and evaluations of the effectiveness of the agreement and its components are reviewed.

New developments in the non-invasive and real-time measurement of the velocity profile of slurry flow in horizontal pipes will be described. This information can be used to determine the approach and onset of solid deposition on the bottom of the pipe. Having this information in real time can enable operation at lower velocities or higher solids concentration or both while avoiding solids deposition or plugging and their associated operational costs. In addition, advances have been made in the measurement and trending of pipewear on slurry lines. In contrast to manual methods, CiDRA?s system uses a permanently or semi-permanently installed ring of conformable ultrasonic transducers clamped onto the outside of the pipe. These transducers are used to measure the thickness of the pipe under their respective locations. This results in better repeatability, accuracy, and failure prediction, along with reduced labor costs. The benefit is significantly improved pipe wear monitoring in pipelines with abrasive solids. This provides an improvement in the ability to insure safe operation and avoidance of costly operational and environmental damage due to leaks caused by pipe wear.

Underwind and overwind protection system concepts for mine hoist shafts were developed in conjunction with and for the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC). End-of-wind operation of mine hoists is the most hazardous aspect of mine hoisting, carrying the highest risk of loss of life, injuries to workers and loss of production. Systems operating mechanically and with local actuation were developed. This was done in order to remove the increased risk associated with dependency on remote or external energy and information supply associated with most existing protection systems. The proposed underwind protection system concept absorbs the energy of motion of a conveyance overrunning the design lower limit of travel by drawing a metal strip through a set of rollers. This action causes dynamic cyclic plastic bending of the strip material that converts the kinetic and potential energy of the conveyance into strain energy of the metal. In the concept design a pair of steel wire rope slings attached to the strips catch the overrunning conveyance and transfer the retardation force. The proposed overwind protection system concept absorbs the energy of motion of a conveyance overrunning the design upper limit of travel by early detaching of the conveyance from the hoist rope. This detaching is carried out via an additional detaching hook activation mechanism fitted at a sufficient height below the spectacle plate to allow the conveyance to retard to standstill under gravity before it would crash into the spectacle plate. The conveyance so brought to rest is prevented from falling by means of jack catches on the conveyance interacting with a rack (toothed profile) fitted on the guide rails in the retardation zone. Scale models (1:10 scale) of both protection systems were designed to conform to established retardation standards. The retardation standards were limited by the requirement of passenger safety in retarding cages. The models were then built and tested in a1:10 scale shaft model. Retardation performance close to the required levels was achieved. The retardation distance required should allow such systems to be retrofitted in most existing shafts. Given the simplicity and robustness of the designs, further development was recommended because of their enhanced self-sufficiency and reduced risk of malfunction. "Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."

Owing to the number of chemical processes now in use for the separation of metals from their ores, and the consequent employment of chemicals at the mine, it is sometimes necessary to be able to produce them on the spot. This particularlyapplies to sulphuric acid which may be required for the manufacture of chlorine and of sulphate of copper, or for the treatment of'sulphides and other purposes. It can be made from brimstone for rather less than £3 per ton, but when delivered to any distance from the works, the cost of packages and other charges would amount to more than the value of the acid.I hope therefore, that to any of the members of the Institute who may find it necessary to make sulphuric acid for their own requirements an outline of the process, and some details of the plant etc may be useful, and perhaps lead to their devising improvements, mechanical or otherwise. Though acid can be made from pyrites in Europe for about 15/- per ton, it is probable that for most metaIIurgical purposes the quantity required. and the uncertainty as to how long it would be needed, would make it advisable to spend as little as possible on plant, and so use brimstone, though more expensive, I have therefore given no details of pyrites burning, which is very fully treated by Prof, Lunge in his work on " Sulphuric Acid and Alkali."

"Interest in the nitrogen content of steel has increased sharply in the last few years. Investigations have indicated that its presence in steel has an important bearing on high temperature brittleness3, magnetic properties4, room temperature hardening5, and shock resistance. The steel producer may therefore look forward with certaintly to the necessity of controlling this element in a considerable proportion of his product. The literature, however, reveals a great many contradictory statements concerning the percentage of nitrogen which must be present to produce given effects on the properties of iron and steel. Most of these arise from a misunderstanding of the nature of the iron-nitrogen diagram near the iron end and a lack of recognition of the effect of state of aggregation on physical properties although both have been fairly well worked out.My thanks are due to Mr. J. Motok for furnishing a valuable bibliography and translations of articles by Must and Duhr.The iron-nitrogen diagram in the solid state, so far as it concerns the nitrogen content of commercial iron and steel, consists simply in a solubility curve increasing with temperature. The important thing about this solubility curve is that without cold wore the iron nitride when precipitated does not go into solution on heating for long periods below 300°C. This slowness of solution is probably due to the fact that iron nitride when present as a separate phase has at these temperatures an equilibrium pressure of several thousand atmospheres7 and that therefore each particle of iron nitride surrounds itself with a layer of nitrogen. The precipitation of such an unstable crystal presents points of interest thermodynamically but we can not go into these here. It is quite well established that it precipitate. It can not diffuse then unless this layer is broken through or the temperature and pressure are increased to a point where the nitrogen is absorbed at an appreciable rate in the surrounding iron. This rate will depend on the degree of unsaturation of the iron and the excess pressure of the nitrogen above equilibrium pressure. The degree of unsaturation is determined by the temperature alone so that the temperature at which the rate of solution of the nitride becomes appreciable will depend on the pressure of nitrogen developed. This, in turn, will depend on the balance between rate of decomposition of the nitride and the rate o: flow of the iron. In annealed iron, this temperature of appreciable solution rate is between 300 and 350°C.8 By cold work, however, the elastic limit of the iron is increased, and conditions for the nitride to go into solution are reached at a much lower temperature, giving rise to the so-called blue brittleness. This brittleness and hardening is due to iron nitride going into solid solution and is not precipitation hardening."

Recent NIOSH published information has shown an increase of rapidly progressive coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP) in the southern Appalachian coal region (SAR) of the U.S., despite the fact that compliance data indicates that most coal miners have been exposed to coal mine dust concentrations below the statutory limit of 2.0 mg/m³. While the exact cause of these elevated CWP levels in the SAR has not been established, several factors may be contributing to the increase in occupational lung disease among coal miners. The mining of high rank coal is known to lead to higher CWP rates, and this type of coal is mined in a portion of this region. Also, a high percentage of the mines in the region are on reduced dust standards because of the high silica content of the airborne dust resulting in miners possibly being exposed to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust. Exposure to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. NIOSH's Respiratory Hazards Control Branch has been investigating the possible causes that would account for the observed higher trends in disease progression through literature review, data analysis, and in-mine surveying. The investigation to date has revealed that underground mines are faced with cutting large amounts of rock in order to maintain haulage clearances. Cutting rock not only increases the potential for silica exposure, it increases the requirement for machine maintenance which was a concern observed during dust surveys conducted by NIOSH. Over half of the mines operating in the SAR are on reduced standards due to high silica content. Adequate face ventilation of the continuous miner and roof bolter and limited down-wind operations from the miner are also issues of concern and items which require the constant attention of miners operating in these conditions. This document, prepared for the U.S. Bureau of Mines Regional Mineral Assessment Program, presents data pertinent to the mineral resource assessment of the Needles 1° x 2° map quadrangle (excluding the Arizona portion), located in the Mojave Desert southeastern California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mineral survey of the quadrangle, conducted from 1991 to 1993, was done to provide the minerals data necessary to support effective land use planning and resource decision making. To this end, this report (1) inventories historic and current mining activity, (2) inventories identified resources, (3) provides an economic analysis; of identified mineral resources and estimates their feasibility for development, (4) delineates areas of exploration and development potential based on current geological, geochemical, and geophysical information, (5) supplies information on land status, transportation networks, power supplies, water availability, and regulations, and (6) analyzes socio-economic impacts of potential mining. The Needles quadrangle is in the Basin and Range province of the southwestern United Van. The area is underlain by a lithologically and structurally complex Proterozoic crystalline basement of gneiss and granite that is overlain by sparse, scattered outcrops of deformed and metamorphosed Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic granitic plutons, particularly in the western half of the quadrangle, intruded the basement and sedimentary rocks, resulting in metamorphism and deformation responsible for the formation of high-grade gneisses and mylonitic rocks (core complex) in the eastern part of the quadrangle. Voluminous Tertiary volcanism unconformably overlie some older sequences. The structure of the area is dominated by Basin and Range extensional block faulting; in the eastern part of the area, block faulting is accompanied by widespread low-angle detachment faulting associated with core complex development.

Incorrect sampling and measurement operations and misunderstanding the components of variability can cause huge economic losses to the mining industry. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate by means of four historical facts how Codelco has been evolving in those issues since the late 1980s. The El Abra bias, the awareness of the different kind of sampling errors and the role of Francis Pitard, the awareness of weighting errors, and the understanding of the components of nature and process variability are described. It has been a slow but a consistent process. Much progress has been achieved but still there are many opportunities for improvement to transit from the tonnage culture to the productivity culture.

During mining, crushing and handling the size of iron ore lumps decreases. Key factors in determining the amount and size of fines that are produced are the mechanical properties of the ore. In a continuation of earlier work on the same ores the mechanical properties of three Australian iron ores from Yandi, Koolan and Mt. Whaleback were determined. In particular, fracture toughness was investigated in greater detail by examining its relationship to crack length using the compact tension test. The elastic modulus and strength of the ores were also determined in flexure and compression. The results were interpreted using Weibull statistics, enabling the ores to be ranked according to strength and elastic modulus. These results, together with data on the mechanical response of the ores to stress and observations concerning the effect of mineralogy on cracking, provide a coherent understanding of the mechanisms involved when the ores fracture

DuRing the early mine development period, 1929 and the first part of 1930, a 300-ton pilot-plant concentrator was built at Nkana mine of the Rhokana Corporation, Northern Rhodesia. This plant operated from May 26, 1930 until Oct. 26, 1931, treating 101,080 tons of Nkana ores and producing 4372 tons of concentrate. The plant was built, primarily, as a test unit to determine the grinding characteristics, floatability, etc. of the Nkana ores and other ores of the Rhodesian copper belt and to supply sufficient data on which to base the design of a 5000-ton concentrating plant at Nkana mine. The test unit operated wholly on development ores and no attempt was made to grade or select the ores from any section of the mine. The average assays for the 17 months of operation are given in Table 1. The first ground was broken for the 5000-ton concentrator during June, 1930, and the construction of the plant was completed in November, 1931. The plant started on Dec. 10 and has operated continuously since that date: The whole of the concentrating plant is compact and closely connected, yet with sufficient space for expansion of all sections up to 20,000 to 25,000 tons per day capacity. Mining operations are carried on along a length of about four miles on the easterly limb of the Nkana syncline. This length includes the North orebody, from which all production has thus far originated, and the Mindola orebody, now being developed for production. The ore-bearing measures in the North orebody are leached for some 75 ft. below the surface; the oxidized zone varies in vertical extent from 100 to 150 ft. The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

Laboratory model test results for the ultimate uplift capacity of square and circular foundations in saturated clay (ø=0) have been presented. The results of the present model tests for square foundations have been compared with the previously published laboratory model tests results on circular foundations. Based on the comparison, it appears that the critical embedment ratio of square and circular foundations increases from about 3 for soft clays to about 7 for medium to stiff clays. By using the experimental results, an empirical procedure has been suggested for determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of belled pier foundations in saturated clay.

Significant movement to an existing slurry wall which serves as a retaining wall on 'O' Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. initiated the Department of Public Works for the District of Columbia to invite specialty contractors to propose a rehabilitation and stabilization for the failed slurry wall. Nicholson Construction Company proposed and was awarded a contract for the construction of an anchored precast lagging and soldier pile wall to be located approximately 4 feet in front of the existing structure with granular fill placed between the new and existing walls. Stabilization of the existing slurry wall also included drilling horizontal weep holes and demolishing the failed panels down to the existing ground surface. A new and improved drainage system was also constructed to increase the amount of water directed toward the existing storm sewer system running along 'O' Street. This paper provides a detailed account of these construction activities.

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. To recover the coal resources of high-sulphur anthracite in Jincheng Mining Area, underground coal gasification (UCG) of No. 15 seam in Fenghuangshan Coal Mine was proposed. The feasibility of the project was confirmed by investigations of occurrence conditions, coal properties, and roof conditions, as well as experimental studies and theoretical analysis. It was found that UCG technology is appropriate to be adopted in the mining of the No. 15 seam, due to the stable rock conditions, simple geological structure and hydrogeology, the high carbon content of the coal, non-cohesiveness, medium-thermal stability, high ash fusion temperature, and weak reactivity with CO2. Further factors are the characteristics of the immediate roof, which consists of 9.11 m of limestone and mudstone with a compact structure and low permeability, and 4.27 m of dominantly mudstone with low permeability.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. This report documents, from concept through field testing, the pan scraper Wheel Slip Monitor. The function of this device is to instantly warn the scraper operator of wheel slip and thus enable him to take immediate corrective action. Knowledgeable pan scraper people recognize that the preponderance of scraper tire damage and wear occurs during useless wheel slip when the scraper operator attempts to increase machine draft beyond what traction will allow. The resultant shortened tire life has become very expensive. The Wheel Slip Monitor reported here provides the means for relieving the scraper operator of attempting to judge wheel slip on tires he cannot see. Direct and intuitively understandable audible and flashing light warnings tell the scraper operator which wheel is slipping and also indicate the relative magnitude of the slip. Beside the Wheel Slip Monitor's patent utility as a real time operator aid, it has unique potential for application to extended term wheel slip history acquisition under field conditions. This information has never been easily available and it promises practical value in pan scraper management.

Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage individuals within the mining companies to work together to identify such indicators, executing risk assessments comes with challenges. Specifically, varying or inaccurate perceptions of risk, in addition to trust and buy-in of a risk management system, contribute to inconsistent levels of participation in risk programs. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field-level risk assessment program to help its organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing leadership development, support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety but actively identifies factors that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s previous process of risk-assessment implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks, as well as a variety of mini case examples that showcase how the organization worked through these barriers to facilitate the identification of leading indicators to ultimately reduce incidents.
