The Bureau of Mines investigated molten-salt electrorefining as a practical method for reclaiming vanadium from vanadium scrap. An electrolytic process utilizing a KC1-LiC1-VC12 electrolyte at 615° C was developed for producing ductile vanadium with a purity over 99.9 percent. The recovery of the vanadium in the cell feed ranged from 88 to 93 percent with a current efficiency from 83 to 95 percent.

"INTRODUCTION The injection of gas into the McClosky limestone in the adjoining, Griffin and New Harmony field in Indiana and Illinois and resulting increases in oil and gas production from this zone ore described in this report.Since 1911, the use of compressed air or as to increase oil production by supplementing natural reservoir energy has been widely adopted, and has resulted in the recovery of much additional oil, which otherwise would have been left underground. In many of the newer oil fields, including Griffin and New Harmony, a part of the compressed residue gas from natural gasoline plants is returned to the reservoir as a secondary method to increase oil and gasoline production. Part of the injected gas is stored underground for future use.By presenting data on many secondary recovery operations in a series of reports 5-9/ the Bureau of Mines has sought to stimulate interest in secondary recovery as a means of increasing oil recovery and current oil production for wartime needs. Most of the elder fields in the United States produce oil from sandstone reservoirs, and probably more than 90 percent of secondary recovery operations have been developed in oil bearing sandstones. During recent years, the volume of oil obtained by primary methods from limestone reservoirs has increased steadily, but as yet little has been done to recover, by secondary means,,the large volumes of oil left in limestone reservoirs when primary methods production are no longer profitable. Because of inherent differences in the origin and nature of the pore spaces between sandstones and limestones and because of differences in permeability and fluid content, secondary recovery methods, which are successful in sandstone-reservoirs, are not always applicable to limestones. Not much he been written concerning secondary recovery operations in limestone reservoirs, and few data are available to assist operators in developing such secondary recovery projects."

The newly implemented mineral law framework exacerbated the need to clarify the roles and responsibilities of mine and land surveyors in the preparation and registration of plans and diagrams. The main concern is that survey tasks may be performed by persons who are not considered competent under the different laws. The methodology used was to analyse historic and present legislation on the issue in order to formulate a narrow interpretation of the current requirements. The major findings are tabulated to present a summary of who is responsible for which areas of survey.

In an underground mine, different mining activities such as undercutting and cave progression generate redistribution in the present in situ stress field, and these changes are represented in the rock mass through induced seismicity.In order to study and analyse the induced seismicity generated in El Teniente, a block model was developed to account for the dissipated seismic energy through different areas of the mine from 1992 to 2015. More than 2.1 million seismic events were unified and classified in 3D in order to be used for the interpolations. The resultant model variables account for the accumulated energy releases in a monthly time resolution, and provide the ability to intersect different 3D entities with the stored information in the blocks, and estimate the energy evolution inside these entities.The generated model was used to analyse the geotechnical variables that determine the seismic response for the rock mass in the mine, such as geometry and direction of advance of the undercut fronts, lithological domains, and to study the ‘work’ the rock mass needed to go through in order to generate caving in areas with different stress settings.A specific area of the mine under high-stress conditions was analysed by studying the seismic energy associated with two subsidence caves interacting around the project, the modelled lithology. Using the same approach two adjacent projects are analysed to understand the released energy from the rock mass based on different stress and geotechnical settings for each project.CITATION:Córdova, E, Brzovic, A and González, R, 2016. The Gippsland Basin in south-eastern Australia has an area of approximately 46 000 sq km. It is one of the world's major coal and petroleum bearing basins, with most of the former occurring in the smaller one fifth on-shore part. The stratigraphy, structure and economic resources of the Tertiary sedimentary pile is now well known through extensive drilling for coal and petroleum. In contrast, the older Cretaceous sequences through their lesser economic importance are relatively less explored. The sedimentational history of the Gippsland Basin has largely followed along similar lines of development to the many other southern Australian basins since the Cretaceous break-up of Gondwanaland. However, the scale of accumulation of coal and hydrocarbon source rocks is unprecedented and differentiates this basin, for reasons less well understood, from the others. Large scale open cut brown coal mining since the late-1920s has been carried out in the western extremities of the basin, while vigorous extraction of some two thirds of Australian petroleum products taken place in the offshore part. Brown coal seam thicknesses and economically winnable reserves are huge and outrank most other brown coal basins of the world. Development of the resource currently meets the need for electricity generation throughout the State of Victoria, but other future developments such as conversion to oil, being investigated.

A research program to aid development of better and more efficient methods for producing petroleum and increasing its ultimate recovery from underground formations is an integral part of the work of the Bureau of Mines on conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Economic, efficient production of recoverable oil and gas from a reservoir depends to a great extent upon the best and most accurate information that can be obtained from a study of the reservoir rock and its fluid contents. Information on oil and water saturation is pertinent and essential in wildcat, extension, and pool wells for good reservoir operations and prediction of performance. This report presents results of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines of core recovery and degree of drilling-fluid contamination occurring during cable-tool coring operations using oil-base mud. Representative core samples were obtained from 6 major oil-producing sands in 8 fields of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Field-mixed, oil-base drilling mud was used for the first coring test, and lightweight, premixed oil-base mud, with an organic chloride tracer added, was used in coring eight other wells. Tracer analyses were made to determine contamination of core by drilling-fluid filtrate. Core analyses, including oil and water content and minimum interstitial water-saturation tests, were made on selected core samples to compare and evaluate water saturations determined by the two methods.

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. El presente texto evalúa el relave minero de SIMSA con el objetivo de obtener un producto ecológico que pueda ser utilizado como mejorador cationico de suelos y restaure el equilibrio de los suelos ácidos de la selva peruana. Para ello, se desarrolló un trabajo a nivel de laboratorio, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios. Posteriormente se pasó al nivel piloto donde a través de la experimentación se utilizó el relave en diferentes concentraciones para la producción agrícola y forestal, reafirmando los resultados en las mejoras de la productividad en suelos ácidos.

Building indicators that respond to all stakeholders' needs is a time-consuming and complex exercise, with certain questions still unsolved. The aim of the current three-year research project, carried out in partnership between BRGM’s Mineral Resources Division and C3ED, is to propose a top-down / bottom-up indicators building methodology that combines conception and coordination methods and a participative approach. The tool-design phase is based partly on a comparative analysis of existing international initiatives according to different criteria (objective, observation scale, framework, etc.). The study of two African mining projects will provide the opportunity to confront the conceptual aspects with reality in the field. Careful consideration of the participants’ suggestions will result in a set of indicators that can be easily understood and adopted by all stakeholders. The final objective is to measure the impact of a mining site on a local, regional and national sustainable development frame, throughout the full life cycle of a mine.

This paper summarises the strategy for selection between a two module coal plant incorporating large, but less equipment, and a three module coal plant with more but smaller equipment. The two options were evaluated in terms of three main categories: ? Size ? size of the equipment and the effect on the process efficiency as well as the difference in physical dimensions of the plant to accommodate the larger equipment; ? Cost ? capital savings between a two and a three module plant, processing the same ROM (run-of-mine) tons per hour (t/hr); and ? Practicality ? in terms of constructability of the plant, safety of using larger equipment and maintainability of the equipment. Decisions that were taken to reduce the risk associated with size, cost and practicality on the chosen option of a two module plant will be highlighted.

"It has been suggested that the pre-concentration of ore underground can bring positive economic and environmental benefits to underground mining, particularly at extreme depth. The integration of mineral processing systems for coarse waste rejection and disposal into the underground mining environment has a substantial impact on the economics and operation of the mine. A case study for the integration of underground pre-concentration at Falconbridge’s Thayer Lindsley and Fraser Copper operations in Sudbury, Ontario is discussed, with particular focus on ore evaluation, system design, integration, and impacts on the operation. Conclusions as to the overall feasibility and potential impacts of underground pre-concentration are presented.INTRODUCTIONObjectivesA scoping investigation has been conducted for Falconbridge Ltd on the Fraser Copper Zone and Thayer Lindsley mines in order to develop a better understanding of the operations, and to do a preliminary evaluation of the potential for pre-concentration of the ore underground. The objective was to develop a conceptual design and evaluation of a pre-concentration system for each site. The results are to be used as the basis for a more detailed future study.Underground Pre-ConcentrationThe pre-concentration of ore to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of material transported to the processing plant is not a new concept and has been in practise at several mines including the American Zinc Company in Mascot Tennessee (Munro et al, 1982), the Sullivan Mine in British Columbia and presently at Xstrata’s Mt Isa lead-zinc mine in Australia, as well as at several PGM mines operating in the South African Bushveld. For each of these mines, a high degree of waste rejection was achieved at a coarse particle size with good metallurgical recoveries. The benefits arising from the surface pre-concentration of ore are well documented in the literature (McCullough et al, 1999; Miller et al, 1978; Munro et al, 1982; Schena et al, 1990; Sivamohan & Forssberg, 1991)."

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. The Barrytown ilmenite pilot plant was commissioned in two stages using Westport Titanium Project heavy mineral concentrate. The wet concentrator was commissioned on the 17 December 1989 and produced magnetic concentrate from this date.   The Drymill was commissioned on the 27 January 1990 and produced product grade ilmenite successfully from the onset.   The commissioning period was exceptionally short by normal standards and few problems were encountered. This paper concludes with general observations of operations of the pilot plant.

A major emphasis of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is to perform research on the prevention of fatal accidents at mining operations. The leading cause of fatalities in the underground coal mining industry is groundfalls. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that are helping to prevent fatalities and reduce injuries by groundfalls. The papers focus on the problem from two different perspectives. About half of the papers present information and techniques that can be used to train and motivate miners to protect themselves from groundfalls. The other papers explain how to identify and respond to various geologic conditions that affect the stability of the mine roof. Of the 95 groundfall fatalities that occurred during 1986-90, 75% took place in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. The rate of groundfall fatalities was much higher at small mines. During 1986-90, the rate of groundfall fatalities at mines employing fewer than 20 people was 4.3 times higher than the rate for larger mines. Because so many groundfall fatalities are occurring at relatively small mines in the southern Appalachian coalfields, many of the papers focus specifically on the needs of this category of mine operations.

There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value. The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

The Yankee Gulch sodium minerals project (YGP) is a solution mining project operated by American Soda. The mine operates on a federal lease administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Commercial operations began in November2000. In 1964, Irv Nielsen discovered nahcolite mineralization where the YGP pilot plant is now located near the Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado (Nielsen, 1969).Development of the project accelerated after Williams Corp., of Tulsa, OK, joined with American Alkali in1996 to form American Soda. Pilot testing by American Soda led to commercial permitting, plant design, construction and startup. Figure 1 shows the location of the Yankee Gulch leases and the location of the upper and lower plant sites.

This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming.
