Dicha estructura otorga estabilidad a las labores de minado -en tanto da sostenimiento activo a través del (Shotcrete SFR y Pernos Hydrabolt), así como desarrolla mayor productividad y menores niveles de riesgo por desprendimiento de rocas, menores grados de sobre excavación y genera de vibraciones al haber implementado la voladura de Pre-corte en sus labores.

The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. Wireless electronic blasting systems are a new technology that enable truly wireless initiation through rock, air and water. This is achieved using low frequency magnetic induction waves to wirelessly send a firing command to groups of in-hole primers. Fully wireless initiation not only removes the limitations imposed by a wired connection to each primer in a blast, but also enables users to alter the paradigm of conventional mining techniques to advance operational productivity and reduce personnel exposure to high-risk activities. While initially deployed in underground applications, wireless electronic blasting is now being used in the open cut environment. To capture the early impacts in surface mining operations, case studies conducted at three surface mines evaluated blasts utilizing a wireless electronic blasting system against baseline blasts using conventional, wired initiation systems. The purpose of this paper is to outline the specific learnings associated with wireless electronic blasting in surface mining to date. The paper will include references to these specific case studies as well as benefits realized and applications for the future.

In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

Helical pile anchors have gained acceptance over the past sixty years. Most recently they have been commonplace in the 20th century for the power utility industry in anchoring transmission towers, equipment platforms, street lighting, telephone poles, and radio tower applications. They have a strong proven industrial track record in these industries. As the cost of conventional deep pile foundations rises, the practical benefits of helical pile anchors becomes evident as a practical alternative. Noted for their uplift capacity, helical piles demonstrate equally strong compressive capacity as a structural foundation element. This paper summarizes the history, practical benefits, and technical requirements for helical piles. Significant structural testing has been completed at various universities. The practical benefits of these tests are discussed. One case example of proven performance is presented to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of helical pile anchors as suitable foundation elements.

"Introduction It has long been recognized by the hot-dip galvanizing industry that the characteristics of the galvanized coating can be influenced significantly by steel and pro cessing variables. Probably the variable of most concern to galvan izers today is steel chemistry. More specifically, the problem is the excessive reactivity of continuously-cast, silicon-bearing steels. In the past, structural steels processed by general galvanizers were in the low-to-medium ca rbon category and contained silicon at either low impurity levels (as with rimmed steels), or less than approximately 0.10% (as with semi-killed steels). The structures of the coatings produced on such steels are characterized by dense, compact layers of delta and zeta iron-zinc alloy phases and a distinct outer layer of eta zinc, which usually imparts a bright shiny appearance to the coating. The presence of silicon in steel, above the so-called semi-killed levels, is known to cause marked stru ctural changes in galvanized coatings. Such coatings are characterized by a relatively thin delta layer, a thick , coarse zeta layer and frequently an absence of the eta layer. The eta phase, comprising zinc which is carried out of the bath during withdrawal of the work, can be consumed by the continuation of the coating reactions until its temperature drops to the solidification point. This results in a dull grey and often mottled surface instead of the usually bright metallic appearance. These galvanized coatings are usually much thicker than coating specifications requ ire and they are usually more brittle and have poor adhesion to the steel. In service, these coatings tend to develop a rust-like discolouration. With the wider use of continuous casting by the steel producers and the associated additions of silicon in this process, the problem is becoming more important and receiving greater attention from the galvanizing industry ."

The perforating of multiple tubingless completions, in which two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, presents two basic problems. First, good completion practices require an eficient perforator that leaves no debris to interfere with subsequent completion operations. Second, and of more complicated nature, a system is needed for controlling the direction of fire so that adjacent strings are not damaged. Development of of a 2-in. OD, steel retrievable, shnped-charge gun has solved the first problem. The second was resolved through development of three different devices to provide directional perforating for the two types of completion methods being employed today. These include a mechanical orienting device and two self-orienting radiation devices. Conceivably, the latter methods could be adapted to the directional perforating (of .upper zones) of conventional dual and triple completions without removing production tubing and packers. INTRODUCTION The recent trend to multiple tubingless completions,&apos; wherein two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, has presented two basic perforating problems. The first problem to be overcome was the design of a gun that would result in efficient perforations without causing debris to bridge in these small-diameter casings. The second problem was, of course, to devise a system for controlling the direction of fire such that adjacent strings would not be damaged. The problem of gun debris in slim-casing completions has been well defined in the numerous 27/8-in. single tubingless completions which have been effected during recent years with the expendable-type perforators. Failure of expendable-gun debris to settle out properly, even with good gun break-up, has resulted in bridging inside these small-diameter casings. This, in turn, has interfered with completion and re-conditioning operations. The past two years have clearly shown, in fact, that debris problems are not confined to this small range of casing with most designs of expendable-type guns. A high incidence of bridging has even been reported in 4%-in. OD casing. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions has entailed, therefore, the development of a completely debris-free gun of adequate performance, as well as the necessary devices to provide positive directional perforating in the two completion methods presently being employed. THE GUN —DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS The design of a shaped-charge gun for slim-casing perforating has presented a maze of interrelated prob-lems. Since the primary specification has been leveled at efficient charge performance with complete elimination of gun debris, it has been necessary to develop a retrievable steel-carrier gun of tubular construction to house the charges. The carrier must be retrievable through 2.29-in. API pump-seating nipples which are usually installed in 2 7/8-in. strings. To provide for recovery of the gun from the well, swelling of the carrier on firing must be carefully controlled. Control of swelling automatically means control of explosive weight in the shaped charge which, in turn, influences charge performance. Carrier swelling also depends upon the confinement pressure at the level being perforated, which imposes a hydrostatic pressure-depth limitation. Burr interference on the wall of the carrier, resulting from passage of the jet through the carrier wall, must be eliminated by suitable design. Clearly then, a satisfactory shaped-charge gun design for slim-casing operations represents a fine balance between carrier swelling, hydrostatic pressure, explosive weight and charge performance. Additionally, to lend itself to directional perforating, the gun design must provide a positive locking mechanism for individual charges within the gun carrier. On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

The disposal of end-of-life electronics is an issue receiving increasing scrutiny. This paper evaluates several alternatives for recycling cathode ray tubes (CRTs) within monitors and televisions. The primary recycling options for the glass, reuse in new CRTs or as a smelter flux, are examined from economic and environmental standpoints. The economics are modeled using a cost model that includes dependencies on processing costs, transportation logistics, and incoming material composition. The environmental consequences are modeled using life cycle assessment methodologies to determine the energy embodied in each processing alternative. Results map out preferred processing alternatives across a range of technological and operational conditions. The results indicate that economic costs and environmental consequences are heavily impacted by transportation. The preferred destination of CRT glass for a recycler is highly dependent on the proximity of the consumer to the recycler, although it is generally economically advantageous for the recycler to extensively dismantle the CRTs.

Stack Sizers are currently screening ferrous and non-ferrous metal ores, mineral sands, silica sand, kaolin clay, feldspar, garnet, phosphate, aluminum dross, potash, coal, tantalum, spodumene, niobium, and other rare earth mineral ores.INTRODUCTIONDerrick engineers have long understood and demonstrated the importance of screen width in coupling both high capacity and high separation efficiency for fine wet sizing applications. As opposed to fine dry sizing, where the length of the screening machine is critical for high separation efficiency, introducing slurry feed to screens in a thin and even layer at minimal velocities across wider screen surfaces allows for high capacities and efficiencies, with maximum screen cloth life. This is due primarily to the combination of free liquid and high frequency vibration of the Derrick motors, which allow fine undersize material to pass through the screen apertures. Lacking either of these factors would be extremely detrimental to the screening process. Without the high frequency vibration of the motor, the screen is essentially a low efficiency sieve bend. Without the free liquid to carry fines through the screen openings, the screen is for all intents and purposes a glorified conveyor or dewatering unit, as little or no sizing takes place once the screen is devoid of free liquid. For optimal screening results, Derrick recommends feeding slurry to a screen at approximately 20% solids by volume. Figure 1 shows the Stack Sizer design concept. Note that a single feed point is used to evenly distribute the flow to the five separate feed points."

Optimizing final pit limits for stochastic models provides access to geologic and economic uncertainty in the pit optimization stages of a mining project. This paper presents an approach for optimizing final pit limits for a highly variable and geologically complex gold deposit. A heuristic pit optimizer is used to manage the effect of geological uncertainty in the resources within a pit shell with multiple uncertainty rated solutions. The uncertainty rated pit shells follow the meanvariance criterion to approximate the efficient frontier for final pit limits. Stochastic dominance rules are then used in a risk management framework to further eliminate sub-optimal solutions along the efficient frontier. This results in a smaller set of final pit shells that could be further analyzed for production scheduling. Additionally, the original solutions are analyzed for changes in the mining limits and two regions are targeted as potential regions for further exploration.

The "Bawang Pile" (in english "onion" pile) described in the article consists of a cased concrete shaft and an expanded base. The steel casing is first driven by an internal drop hammer and then the base is formed in-situ by the raming the concrete at the bottom of the slitted casing. This new type of pile can be used for underpining (small head room) of buildings and as foundation for transmission towers or lamp posts. Full-scale load tests in compression and in tension on the Bawang pile and on steel pipe piles demonstrate the dramatic increase of the ultimate capacity due to the expanded base. Guidelines for the design of such piles are proposed.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings.
