Spectrochemical methods were developed to determine beryllium in the concentration range 0.0015 to 4.0 percent in siliceous mineral beneficiation products. Two methods are described. They are (1) a fusion-pellet-spark procedure (spark method) and (2) a sustaining alternating-current arc procedure (arc method). In the spark method the sample is fused with lithium tetra-borate and vanadium pentoxide. The resulting bead is crushed, mixed with powdered graphite, and briquetted. This is analyzed spectrographically using controlled high-voltage spark excitation. In the arc method the sample is diluted with germanium metal, graphite, and vanadium pentoxide. Weighed charges are packed into cupped graphite electrodes and subjected to excitation with a sustaining alternating-current arc. Vanadium serves as internal standard for both methods. Effects due to matrix variations in samples and standards are eliminated either by fusion with lithium tetraborate in the spark method or by dilution with germanium and graphite in the arc method. Beryllium determinations show deviations from accepted chemical values of approximately 5 and 8 percent for the spark and arc methods, respectively. Analyses can be made more rapidly by the arc procedure with a sacrifice in precision and accuracy. Either method can be applied to the determination of beryllium in silicate rocks.

"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Two Longyear No. 12 Junior Straitline diamond drills were used for the work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The raining and quarrying trends data shown in this report were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) by mining and quarrying companies on the Mine Information Supplement survey, as well as by mineral producers on 58 annual USBM production and consumption surveys covering 59 nonfuel mineral commodities. The 1993 data presented in the tables of this chapter, were processed for the first time using the USBM Automated Mineral Information System. Domestic mining of nonfuel mineral materials totaled 3.7 billion metric tons in 1993, including 2.2 billion tons of crude ore nun& or quarried and 1.5 billion tons of mine waste and ore from development. This \vas an overall increase of 11% over that of 1992. These data do not include construction sand and gravel which until 1993 has been surveyed biennially. Starting in 1994, construction sand and gravel and the stones, which were also surveyed biennially, will be surveyed annually.

Enormous quantities of limestone are used for metallurgical purposes. Approximately 23 million tons were so used in the United States in 1925 chiefly for smelting iron ores in the blast furnace. Smaller amounts are used in basic open-hearth steel manufacture, and in smelting lead, copper and antimony ores. Most limestone producers lave little knowledge of the way in which their stone is used in metallurgy. Maximum tolerances of silica, alumina, sulphur and possibly magnesium; and minimum content of calcium carbonate may be arbitrarily fixed for the guidance of the producer, but aside from these requirements little information is available to producers on the manner in which their stone is used, the office it performs in smelting, or the effects of impurities. More complete [wledge] of utilization would enable limestone operators to solve their production problems more intelligently.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. "INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. During some distillation experiments conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Trent Process Corporation it was observed that amalgams of heavy petroleum oils and finely pulverized coal tended to produce a denser coke than that obtainable from the coal when retorted alone . Even anthracite coal when retorted with oil yielded a coke . This led the writers to believe that by mixing a lowrank coal ( sub-bituminous or even lignite ) - with asphaltic oil and retorting it, a coke suitable for domestic fuel could be made . Thus there was contemplated the production of domestic coke and the utilization of a low- grade oil in one operation . - In order to decide on the practicability of this process , it was necessary to know the value of products obtainable by such a method , as compared with those obtained by separate distillation . A laboratory method was therefore devised , and while it was realized that no small - scale testing apparatus for destructive distillation gives results that are directly applicable to commercial - scale operations , by keeping distillation conditions uniform for comparative tests , results were obtained valuable for purposes of comparison . The plan was to distill mixtures of coal and oil in a laboratory retort , and then distill the constituents separately under the same conditions . The comparative quantities of products yielded were thus directly obtained , and their quality was determined by analysis . The following are the main points investigated : ( 1 ) Quantity and quality of coke ; ( 2 ) Quantity of oils boiling below 221 °C . ( gasoline stock) and oils boiling at 221 to 300° C . ( kerosene stock) ; and ( 3) Quantity and quality of gases .

The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations In the United States was made In accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items Is confidential. 1t presents analytical data for 4, 802 samples, representing the products of 117 companies. The samples were collected during December 1954 and January and February 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered 6y this survey Include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation, A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

Fiber optic systems are being deployed in locations where explosive gas atmospheres are normally present or are present under fault conditions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH, PRL) conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers conducted experiments to estimate the mean and standard deviation of laser powers needed to ignite 6% methane-air atmospheres using single mode optical fiber tips covered by two types of iron oxide (Fe304 and (FeMn)203) mixed with a ceramic adhesive. The iron oxides, heated by a 1064 nm continuous wave laser, ignited the methane-air mixtures ,at similar powers. The minimum igniting power and maximum non-igniting power (10 tests) were 407 and 350 mW, respectively, using a 62.5 pm fiber. Laser beams guided by 125 and 80 pm diameter cladding single mode fibers produced similar methane-air igniting powers. Ignition was not observed using coal particles at powers that produced ignition with the iron oxides. Threshold ignition delays using the single mode fiber were approxinlately proportional to the inverse square of the igniting power. Ignition delays were significantly longer than the reported activation time for a comnlercial fiber optic power limiter. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. The Bureau of Mines developed by core drilling the Cove Meadow copper property, also known as the Patterson property, from May 6, 1949, to August 6, 1949. It is in the Cove Meadow mining district, northwestern Humboldt County, Nev., 102 miles northwest of Winnemucca. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves in a mineralized shear zone in andesite that has been partly explored by several surface cuts and two shallow underground workings. Production from this zone to August 1, 1,949, was 98 tons of hand-sorted copper ore assaying 5.1 percent. The development work performed by the Bureau of Mines comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, sampling the outcrops, and exploring by diamond drilling the shear zone adjacent to the fault. Seven holes were drilled for a total of 1,246 feet. Mineral reserves indicated by the project are confined to a length of 500 feet along the strike.

A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432.2/ A list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar years 1947, 1948, and 1949 was published as Information Circular 7569. The present list supplements Information Circulars 7432 and 7569 and includes all of 'the equipment approved during the calendar year 1950. Information Circular 7465, which included a list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 therefore is superseded.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated five commercial badge-type carbon monoxide dosimeters. Color changes in the badge reagent indicated the presence of carbon, monoxide. Possible effects of ambient conditions on dosimeter response to CO during or after coal mine fires or explosions were studied. Temperature and humidity changes did not change dosimeter sensitivity to CO. Contaminant gases such as CO2, N02, S02, and H2S had effects that varied with brands of dosimeters ranging from no effect to increased sensitivity to CO. Dosimeters tested after 6 months of storage showed an increase in failure rate as high as 25 percent. Tests were conducted to determine the effects on dosimeter time-for-color change caused by observer's sight (colorblind); lighting, and coal dust on dosimeters. No significant effects were observed. Observer variance was the most pronounced factor observed in all tests.

The Bureau of Mines conducted small-scale batch and semicontinuous tests on the reduction of zinc sulfide with iron according to the reaction ZnS + Fe ? FeS + Zn to determine reaction kinetics in the temperature range 1,000° to 1,400° C and to investigate the potential use of a scrap iron reductant. Batch tests indicated that a temperature of at least 1,300° C with a 1:1 mole ratio of Fe to ZnS is needed for good zinc recovery. Semicontinuous tests were conducted, using four zinc concentrate samples, containing various percentages of copper, cadmium, and lead, which were reacted with iron and iron contaminated with iron oxide and tin in an externally heated graphite furnace. Analysis of the zinc metal and FeS matte reaction products showed cadmium to be entirely in the zinc metal, copper to be in the FeS matte, and lead to be about 60 pct in the zinc metal and 40 pct in the matte. Tin reported to the matte, and none was detected above the O.OS-pct level in the zinc. Sulfur dioxide was not detected in the offgas when up to 20 pct of the iron was replaced by Fe203.

This report covers a phase of an extraction project carried out as part of a research program on rare-earth technology. The current project--the production of pure cerium compounds--is an intermediate step between ore processing and metal reduction. In this connection, a study on a separatory-funne1 scale was made on nonreducing extractants for recovering cerium (IV) from tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and of methods for recovering the cerium nitrate from the strip solution. Dilute sulfuric acid was found to be 100 percent effective in stripping cerium (IV). Several precipitants were effective in recovering the cerium from the strip solution, and ethanol was especially promising. A scaled-up investigation was made into the use of spray-tower type equipment to perform the function of extracting, washing, and stripping. This equipment, referred to as the pressure-bubbler, utilized the system developed on the separatory-funnel scale. Feed solutions were prepared from a bastnasite concentrate by two techniques. Of these, the sulfated bastnasite solution was most successful, resulting in 86-percent recovery of the cerium at 99.7+-percent purity.

This paper is one of a series prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with milling methods and costs. In view of the current revival of interest in gold mining, information dealing with practices and costs in the development of gold properties is apropos. Milling practice at a small gold property in the prospect stage is described where, with a small outlay for plant and equipment, development has been carried on for about 20 months on the proceeds of the mill operation with little additional expenditure. The paper shows about what may be expected as to costs at a small property operated under northern climatic conditions and with rigid economy throughout the plant.

This report describes the results and conclusions of the further development of a lightweight probe drill for use in anthracite mines. Improvements to the drill previously developed under Contract H0282044 were made and tested at an Eastern Pennsylvania mine. These improvements were: 1. Better hole cleaning due to the development of an air-water mist flushing system. 2. The application of roof drill bits to allow drilling through rock seams and lenses. 3. The development of a quick coupling drill system which reduced total steel change time. 4. Adaptation of a swivel to the drill anchoring system which greatly reduced set-up time between holes. With these improvements the probe drill demonstrated its ability to drill the required 11 holes in one shift. It also gained miner acceptance as a viable underground working tool. The probe drill proved to meet all of the design requirements of portability, low weight drilling controllability, structural integrity and reliability. In addition to its ability to drill the required probe pattern, the probe drill has the capability of drilling long holes. By drilling several holes over 80 feet deep the probe drill has demonstrated a potential for use in robbing pillars and for methane drainage.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the Diamond Peak area comprising 183,000 acres in the Challis and Targhee National Forests in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. More than 3,000 mining claims were located in three mining districts between the years 1882 and 1986. Approximately 230 mining claims in and the 150 claims adjacent to the study area were current in 1986, when Bureau of Land Management mining records were researched for this study. A total of 1,270 samples were collected from these sites (30 were for alluvial placer). Results of the investigation help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Lead-, silver-, zinc-, copper-, and gold-bearing minerals occur as veins and replacement bodies in shear and fault zones in Precambrian and Paleozoic calcareous Sedimentary rocks that have been complexly folded and faulted. Total production from the three mining districts in the study area was more than 150,000 tons of ore between 1901 and 1982. Approximately 11,600 tons of subeconomic resources consisting of lead, silver, zinc and copper were identified within the area. Over 37,500 tons of lead and zinc subeconomic resources were identified just outside the area. In addition, lead-, silver-, and zinc-mineral resources were identified at 4 mines within 2 miles of the study area. Iron mineral resources were also identified just outside the area.

The objective was to develop a Program Plan of analytical studies and tests for determining (1) the optimum installation tension of a coal mine roof bolt, (2) the most valid bolt support theory or theories, and (3) the most valid roof failure theory or theories. On this basis a comprehensive literature search was made and significant material dealing with coal mine roof behavior, roof bolting and roof support was collected, reviewed, classified and analyzed. Emphasis was given to the influence of rock reinforcement on the control of deformation, stress field modification and mine roof stability. An assessment was made of the effect of various parameters including bolt tension, bolt pattern and time of installation, on the effectiveness of rock reinforcement systems, and equations developed for bolt tension as a function of these parameters, and rock properties. From these studies, a major program plan of tests and studies was developed for verifying and validating the most tenable theories of roof behavior and roof support and for determining optimum bolt installation tension.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Page concentrator of the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Page mine and mill are located on Silver Creek, 3 miles west of Kellogg, Idaho, and 1 mile south of United States Highway No. 10. Supplies and concentrates are hauled by truck over an automobile road which connects Highway No. 10 with the property. The concentrator has capacity to treat 300 tons of ore per day and utilizes all-flotation methods of treatment. Power is supplied from the main line of the Washington Water Power Co. which runs from Spokane, Wash., to Kellogg, Idaho. Water is obtained from the mine and also from a well which is situated 1 mile distant from the concentrator and about 600 feet in elevation below the concentrator.
