This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that in many instances publication of total production costs may cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals with the methods employed by the Malvern Clay Co., Malvern, Carroll County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following persons: H. C. Tests during pillar robbing, longwall operations, and other mining activities indicate that roof-floor convergence rates can be used as an indicator of imminent roof failure. A large number of electrical-mechanical devices have been built to measure convergence as well as convergence rates, but most obstruct mine traffic and are costly and time consuming to install. The Bureau of Mines has designed and is evaluating three types of small ultrasonic units to make these measurements. The new instruments provide nonobstructing measurements up to 35 ft away. The ultrasonic transducers can be attached to a roof bolt, placed in an unsupported area (by means of a toss basket), or handheld. Total distance to the target and rate of closure are displayed digitally to 0.001 ft and 0.01 ft/min, respectively.

Although motor gasoline marketed in the United States in January of this year was, on the average, slightly more volatile than that sold in January 1925, the improvement in quality is too small to be of importance. In other words, there is no evidence that any radical change in the quality of gasoline is being made at the present time. During the past six years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the thirteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

There has been a good deal of speculation as to the function of a vehicle in the coal hydrogenation process. One of the most fruitful theories has been the suggestion that a vehicle such as tetralin functions by supplying hydrogen to the coal, and that the high-pressure hydrogen present in the system serves to regenerate the tetralin. In order to obtain experimental evidence bearing on this theory, a series of experiments was planned in which varying quantities of tetralin were used with coal in the presence of high-pressure hydrogen. This paper reports the results of these experiments.

"INTRODUCTION Lookout Mountain is the natural barmier that isolates Dade County from the rest of Georgia. Legend has it that Dade County seceded from the Union long before the rest of the State of Georgia and did not officially return until July 4, 1945.Coal mining began in the Lookout Mountain area in 1891, and by 1894 production amounted to about 1,000 tons daily. Present production by the two principal operating companies is about 3,600 tons monthly.In the Sand Mountain area, coal has been mined intermittently since before the Civil War, and probably 6,500,000 tons has been produced.The Bureau of Mines coal project was initiated to alleviate a possible coal shortage and to assist the State in developing coal deposits to supply State institutions and local markets. Drilling began January 1, 1945, and ended May 11, 1945, after 2,907 feet had been drilled. By this time the Georgia Power Co. became interested in northwest Georgia coal fields as a possible source of more economic fuel for their steam-driven power plants, but the Bureau continued to act in an advisory capacity to the power company until June 30, 1945."

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for testing the tensile and sheer strength of cast specimens of bulk solder and of soldered joints in order to increase the strength and extend the useful temperature range of soft solders. A spread-area test for determining the wettability of solder on copper surfaces was developed. Mannitol was used as a flux in spread tests to control spreading and to avoid plating, etching, and other side effects of regular fluxes. Data on commercial and high-purity solders obtained by these methods show more consistency than those reported by others from similar tests.

The smelting of tin slags was undertaken at the Bureau of Mines Albany Metallurgy Research Center (AMRC) to produce crude columbium-tantalum ferro-alloy as a unit operation in the production of pure columbium and tantalum oxides or chlorides. Columbium and tantalum-rich alloy was prepared during short unrelated campaigns over a total period of 12 years. Tin slags from Malaya and the Congo (Geomines) were smelted. These slags were reduced by carbon in a small, single-phase, steel-making furnace} a larger three-phase, steelmaking furnace, and a three-phase, submerged-arc furnace, In all cases depleted slags were fluid and easily tapped from the furnace. However, unless diluted by iron additions, the metal product was a viscous, high-melting, heterogeneous mixture that could be removed from the furnace only by hand rabbling.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine requires a guidance system to aid remote positioning of the machine by determining its position and heading. The mechanical position and heading system (MPHS) developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines provides such navigation information during face maneuvers. This report describes the required theory, which yielded a reliable algorithm for calculating machine position and heading, and implementation of this theory in hardware and software design, which made surface testing of the MPHS possible. Analysis of the errors and test results showed that the MPHS provides reliable results and can, therefore, provide useful guidance information for face navigation.

This volume is the third of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume II: Dragline Model, and Volume IV: User's Manual for OPMHS/2. The Mine Coordinate Generator System serves as an interface between the Geology and Reserves System (Volume I, final report) and OPMHS/2 (Volume IV, final report) to provide local mine grid information which is used as input to the decision making process and dynamic simulation routines of OPMHS/2. After the Geology and Reserves System has been successfully run for a property, a data base containing values for each grid cell covering the property is created at the end of execution, if chosen as an option by the user. The Mine Coordinate Generator reads this information and creates a special direct access data set from the sequential data input. When information defining the mine grid is read, the values present in the property grid are for the interpolation of values for each mine block.

A simple economical method has been developed for determining the in situ longitudinal and shear velocities in rock from which its elastic constants can be calculated. By detonating small charges of high explosives in shallow drill holes near a free surface, both longitudinal and shear waves were generated simultaneously. Accelerometers and velocity gages mounted to the rock surface were used to record the arrival time for both waves over travel path lengths from 50 to 450 feet, Measurements were made in two rock types. From the arrival time measurements, the longitudinal and shear wave velocities were calculated. From these velocities and the density of the rock, the elastic constants were calculated. The dynamic elastic constants of drill core samples of the two rock types were determined in the laboratory by the resonant-frequency method, The lab- oratory and in situ elastic constants are compared and significant differences noted. In general, there is less spread in the in situ data than in the laboratory data, and Poisson's ratio does not fall outside the theoretical limits for the in situ data as is often the case for laboratory-determined elastic constants.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines monitored rock mass response to mining of an experimental underhand longwall stope in Hecla Mining Co.'s LUCKY Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. This stope design, the Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL), was proposed as a means of controlling rock bursting while also allowing increased mechanization of mining operations. Instruments were specifically manufactured to monitor three geomechanical factors (backfill performance, ramp stability, and rock mass response) that directly affect the success of stope design. Despite considerable difficulties with instrument installation and survival in the harsh mine environment, especially within the stope fill, sufficient information was collected to suggest that the LFUL method was successful in achieving project goals. This conclusion, in addition to favorable economic and operational evidence, led the mine to adopt the method throughout the mine. Indeed, this study and mining experience suggest that underhand longwall mining could be considered a feasible mining method for rock-burst-prone ground throughout the Coeur d'Alene District. IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

The 19th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Civic Center, Charleston, w. Va., on October 2, 3, and 4, 1961. The meet was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other groups interested in safety. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1961 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: George Trevorrow (chairman), Bituminous Coal Operators' Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; Harry Gandy, Jr., National Coal Association; and James Westfield, Bureau of Mines.

This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

THE CRACKING AND POPPING of rock, often heard by men working underground, for years has been interpreted as a warning of danger and unstable ground. However, not until 1939 was it discovered that rock under stress generates subaudible and sometimes audible seismic disturbances (referred to as "micro-seismims" 4), which can be detected with the use of a suitable seismic apparatus. Since that date laboratory and field investigations have been in progress to ascertain to what extent this phenomenon can be utilized to detect, localize, and determine the magnitude of areas of instability in and around mine openings and to predict if and when failure will occur. These investigations have included a determination of the types of problems to which the method is applicable and the effect of rock type, geological defects, such as joints, fractures, faults, and other uncontrollable factors, on the reliability of results. Six reports have been prepared covering the investigations conducted between 1940 and 1952 (4-9). 5 These reports describe some of the characteristics of micro-seismims, as determined from both laboratory and field tests; the equipment used to pick up and record micro-seismims; the general test procedure and method of analyzing results; and applications of the method to specific mining problems.

Relatively pure aluminum nitride (AIN) recently has been prepared in sufficiently large amounts to permit a variety of experimental studies.4/ Several mechanical and chemical properties have been investigated, which show that this substance has good potentialities as a container for liquid aluminum, gallium, and boric oxide. The present work by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to obtain thermo-dynamic data pertinent to the calculations regarding thermal stability and reactivity of aluminum nitride. The following measurements were made: (1) determination of the heat of formation from the elements at 298.15° K.; (2) determinations of the heat capacity over the temperature range 51° to 298.15° K. and the evaluation of the entropy at 298.15° K. therefrom; and (3) determinations of the heat content over the temperature range 298.15° to 1,800° K. These data are combined to obtain free energies of formation from the elements between 298.15° and 2,000° K.

Gieseler plastometer tests were performed on eight western coking coals at retort - immersion depths ranging from 2 to 3-3 /4 inches (measured to the center of the coal charge ) . Increased maximum fluidities were associated with greater retort - immersion depths , the most pronounced increases being observed on highly swelling coals when tested at 3-3 /4 inches . The maximum fluidity of one of these coals when tested at 3-3 /4 inches was 146 percent greater than that observed at 24 inches . Retort - immersion depth had no significant effect on the temperatures of initial softening , fusion , maximum fluidity , end of fusion , and solidification .

As part of a respirable mine-dust research program at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, spark-source mass spectrometry has been used for the semiquantitative determination of trace elements (200 ppm weight or less) in raw coals. In addition, several minor and major elements have been determined using this technique. Sixty-four elements ranging in concentration from 0.01 to 41,000 ppm weight were determined in one anthracite, two mvb, four lvb, and six hvab raw coal samples. The samples represented 10 coal seams located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Utah, and Colorado.
