I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

A study of literature on the epidiorite dykes which transgress the Broken Hill lode and its wall rocks reveals a considerable diversity of thought regarding the time of emplacement of such dykes. In this paper it is deduced that the epidiorite dykes were formed at a late stage and were probably post-ore. Detailed mapping, sampling, and correlation of data from over 100 exposures substantiates this deduction. Physical disruption of the epidiorite dykes is indicated and some interaction of the epidiorite and ore at the time of intrusion is inferred.Further petrological study may confirm this.

A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. Certain sections of the area were investigated geochemically by Mr. K. K. Hughes of New Consolidated Gold Fields (Asia) Pty. As part or a programme to raise lead smelter capacity from 65.000 to 140.000 tons bullion per annum. one new 1000 sq. ft. updraught area sintering machine replaced eight small downdraught machines.The metallurgical specifications were based on and laboratory tests at Mount Isa. Existing practice filtering concentrate as part of the charge preparation system and discharging wet filter cake to mixing was retained. This dictated a hot return fines circuit to maintain the required feed moisture content at low return sinter ratios.The engineering specifications provided for cenlralized control of plant and process, minimum operating labour, high plant availabi;lity and highest standardsof hygeine. Crushing and conveying capacity was set to cater for the most optimistic level of sintering capacity.On start-up a number of major engineering and hygiene problems became apparent, in addition to normal teething troubles. These problems have largely been overcome and reliable operation. at less than optimum production rate is now being achieved.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Bacterial leaching of low grade quartz felspar porphyry copper ore was studied in large-scale laboratory percolation leaching columns.Limitations in the release of soluble copper showed up before fifty per cent recovery, due to occluding precipitates of iron oxides and hydroxides. Precipitates were removed by increasing the acidity of irrigation feed four-fold with respect to sulphuric acid. However, irrigation at low pH (pH 1.5) inhibited copper leaching. Resumption of bacterial leaching at pH2 was achieved by introducing a period of non-irrigation. The results suggest a 'direct' attack by bacteria on the chalcopyrite substrate rather than an 'indirect' ferric-leach mechanism.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

 The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (<1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

During investigations of the treatment methods for ore from the Bird-in-Hand gold mine carried out at Kalgoorlie and at these laboratories, it was found that excess alkali caused a lowering of extraction by cyanide, the cause of this being attrIbuted to the presence of a small amount of oxidised lead compounds in the ore. The subject has been discussed by various writers,3 but no satisfactory explanation of existing facts has been put forward. Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

It is indeed a privilege and honour to deliver the keynote address at this 15th APCOM symposium. APCOM has played a significant role in my own career and I am sure in the careers of many of the thousands of other participants over the years since its inception as a short course on "Computers and Computer Applications in the Mineral Industry" at the University of Arizona in 1961. The technical papers and addresses presented at the 14 past symposia provide an imposing record of sustained pro- gress and achievement in the field of computer applications. I will not attempt to analyse this technical side of APCOM but rather endeavour to provide you with a broad popular perspective of the road travelled to date and that lying ahead of us. The name of the series of symposia has changed from time to time, with titles such as Mathematical and Statistical Techniques, Mining and Exploration, and Decision Making being used at various times until in 1972 the name APCOM was coined and the present loga designed by the South African organising committee for the 10th symposium. Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

Nickel-bearing ores in North-east Dundas have been described by A. McIntosh Reid1 as occurring at the margins of narrow dykes of gabbro, norite, peridodite and pyroxenite, which are intrusive into the Dundas series of slates, quartzites and breccias. They occur chiefly in the neighbourhood of the Five Mile, near Zeehan, as small, narrow ore-bodies which are mostly less than 100 ft. in length.The ores are massive sulphides containing pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and the nickel sulphide, pentlabdite.A less common nickel-bearing mineral, gersdorffite, has been recently found in an adit, which is marked on Reid's geological plan of Dundas as the Hecla mine, 30 chains south of the crossing of the North-east Dundas tramway, over the Great Northern Creek, and at an, elevation of about 350 ft. above the tramway. The occurrence is in a lode traversing the Dundas slates and quartzites, and is situated, according to Reid's plan, about 20 chains beyond the northern extremity of a narrow basic dyke which is continuous for a distance of two miles in a south-westerly direction.The mine eonsists of a prospecting adit following the course of a lode for about 275 ft. in a direction a little west of south. The low values of the lode are indicated by a bulk sample from a shallow winze about 100 ft. from the entrance which is reported by Reid to contain:
