There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value. Effective land-use planning requires accurate knowledge of mineral resource potential. Mineral companies during reconnaissance exploration, feasibility investigations and mine development also use this type of analysis. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a two-year project reviewing the resource potential of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spatial prospectivity models have been developed as part of this resource assessment process, using computer based statistical pattern recognition techniques to delineate areas that are prospective for mineral deposits and to test deposit genesis models. Digital GIS data-sets of mineral occurrence were correlated against geology and exploration information. The distribution of mesotherrnal shear zone gold deposits in the Reefton Goldfield, were examined against geological data-sets from both the regional (QMAP) and local prospect-scale mapping. Weights of evidence analysis generated a correlation matrix that highlights relationships and degrees of association that might otherwise not normally be recognised.   Mesothermal shear zone gold deposits have strong positive spatial correlations with Greenland Group host rocks and areas with moderate to high quartz vein densities; moderate-strong positive correlation with regions <500 m from folds, with regions <600 m from faults and five to eight kilometres from granite contacts; moderate correlations with Ntrending fault and fold segments; and no/weak/poor correlations with fault intersections, fold-fault intersections, bends in regional structures and magnetic and radiometric data. The regional and prospect scale data sets give different results, with the more detailed prospect scale mapping giving generally better correlations. This emphasises the value of detailed geological mapping in the exploration process.   Maps generated by prospectivity modelling consistently highlighted areas of known mineralisation and generate targets where follow-up investigation is warranted. The prospectivity per unit area provides a measurable value that should change as new information comes to hand and, in addition to highlighting targets, can be used to measure the impact of increased exploration expenditure and assess the effectiveness of exploration investment.

Small orogenic gold deposits have the same deposit-scale geological and geochemical features as those that characterise giant orogenic gold systems (>16 Moz Au). Therefore, a broader-scale approach is needed to identify the critical controls on giant deposits and their disproportionate distribution throughout time and space. Ages of giant gold systems cluster around well-defined periods of lithospheric growth at continental margins, and it is orogen-scale processes during these Late Archaean, Early Proterozoic and Phanerozoic times that determine gold endowment of a province.   A critical factor for giant orogenic gold provinces appears to be asthenospheric upwelling at the time of gold mineralisation to most effectively transfer the thermal energy required to initiate and sustain high hydrothermal fluid flux. The extent of this fluid flux should be related to thickness of the lithosphere beneath a province at the time of gold mineralisation, such that giant gold deposits are much more likely to develop in orogens with oceanic or thinned continental lithosphere. A proxy for the latter is likely to be a short premineralisation crustal history such that thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle was not developed. Conversely, orogens with protracted premineralisation crustal histories are more likely to have a thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which is difficult to delaminate and, hence, such provinces will normally be poorly endowed. The nature of the lithosphere also influences the intrinsic gold concentrations of potential source rocks, with back-arc basalts, transitional basalts and basanites enriched in gold relative to other rock sequences. Thus, segments of orogens with thin lithosphere may be defined by conjunction of giant-scale fluid flux through gold-enriched sequences.   Although the nature of the lithosphere plays the crucial role in dictating which orogenic gold provinces will contain one or more giant deposits, the precise siting of those giants depends on the critical conjunction of a number of province-scale factors that control fluid conduits, traps, and seals in tectonically and lithospherically suitable terranes within accretionary orogens.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming. An extensive suite of elements are routinely assayed on all resource drill core samples to assist in deposit scale resource definition, local mine scale delineation of ore zones, and ore characterisation for the planning and scheduling of mining and processing of ores at Olympic Dam. This paper discusses a deposit scale geochemical relation that can be used by mine geologists to find more high-grade ore at the local mine area scale at Olympic Dam.A 3D grade shell representing 0.8 per cent Cu was created for a mine area using drill hole assay data. This defined the geometry of the ore zone. The Cu-grade shell was then overlain onto the existing resource block model to evaluate the relationships between the Cu-grade shell, copper and other elements. The strongest correlation was between copper and manganese. The block model showed a dramatic decrease in the concentration of manganese just below the below the Cu-grade shell.Several drill holes that intersected the Cu-grade shell were selected to evaluate the copper manganese relation at the drill hole scale. As expected, the individual drill holes displayed a strong inverse relation between copper and manganese. A geochemical footwall was then modelled representing 0.1 wt per cent Mn. Using both the Cu– and Mn-grade shells, several drill holes were designed/drilled and all hit high-grade copper.For the vast majority of the deposit the inverse relation between copper and manganese is valid; however, in areas with intense chlorite alteration (related to amounts of mafic to ultramafic rocks) this relation is not as strong, due to increased manganese in the rock mass. Even though using the copper manganese relation as a drill targeting method was not always as reliable in a few small areas of the deposit, it demonstrates the value of using existing assay data integrated with the resource block model to discover local mine scale geochemical relationships which can be used to more effectively design drill holes to discover high-grade ore at Olympic Dam.CITATION:Griffith, J and Ehrig, K, 2017. The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

Important factors in dredge design are the estimation of total head, and the determination of flow in and around suction nozzles and in pipe lines. Total head for the dredge pump is calculated from velocity, static, and friction heads. Flow into suction nozzles depends on whether hydraulic jets or mechanical cutters are used, and on nozzle shape. Design of pipe lines depends on the transportation characteristics of the pulp, skin friction, swirl, and the avoidance of cavitation. Measurement and control of flow is important.INTRODUCTIONEconomic deposits of heavy minerals along the east coast of Australia occur in frontal dunes, which are normally unconsolidated and granular, or in hind dune areas which may contain indurated seams interspersed with loose material. In working frontal dunes, dredging depths are usually shallow since values do not persist for more than a few feet below sea level. However, the controlling factor in dredging the hind dune areas is the level of the water table and suction dredges may be designed to mine to depths of 120 ft, or even more, if necessary.In previous applications of suction dredges in the industry attention was directed primarily towards production and there was only limited research on fundamental techniques. However, with lower grade deposits now forming the major ore reserves, production levels and profit margins will fall unless more efficient dredges are developed.For satisfactory design of dredges it is essential that the total head be accurately estimated and that detailed information of the principles of flow in and around suction nozzles be determined. This paper presents information gained from field experience and laboratory investigation on these aspects.

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. High chrome grinding media has been used in the mining industry for quite some time, as it often proves economical on a wear basis. However, it is unusual for an operation to change to high chrome solely due to its metallurgical benefits. KagaraÆs Mount Garnet operation made the change from forged steel to high chrome media after laboratory testwork indicated that copper grades and recoveries would improve. The outcome was remarkable with positive changes in pulp chemistry throughout the circuit accompanied by marked improvements in copper, lead and zinc grades and recoveries. Reagent dosage rates were reduced, often by more than half, and the grinding media wear rate dropped to less than a third of the wear rate of the forged steel media. The economic analysis showed that out of the total increase of revenue and savings from metallurgical improvements and reagent and media consumption reductions the metallurgical improvements made up approximately 73 per cent, the reduced reagents saved 25 per cent and the savings through reduced media wear contributing by just over one per cent. This indicates that the popular view of high chrome media only being trialled in the plant for wear economics is outdated and the focus of operations should be shifted to using high chrome media for the metallurgical benefits.

The extraction of drawbells in Lift #2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody was achieved by single shot blasting, enabled through the use of electronic detonators. This paper discusses the designs considered at the time of the feasibility study and the various changes made to these designs prior to and during the construction phase of the Lift #2 block cave. Operational issues encountered are highlighted, as are ways in which these were overcome. The amount of personnel utilised to mine the drawbells is also covered. Lists of design and operational considerations to be used for drawbell extractions have been included.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. Faults cutting the Lithgow and Katoomba seams in some collieries of the Western Coalfield can be classified, on the basis of spatial pattern, into three principal groups: meridional swarms of closely spaced minor faults and associated joints, with throws of less than 0.5 m and with exceptional faults of up to 5 m; isolated interswarm strike-slip faults in the Lithgow seam and widely spaced strike-slip faults in swarms in the Katoomba seam; and low-angle normal faults associated with the Lidsdale-Lithgow seam split.Orientations of faults and coal cleats in the coalfield are presented on stereoplots and histograms, as a basis for an analysis of fault dynamics. The low-angle normal faults were found to have been formed only along the Lidsdale-Lithgow seam split, and before the high-angle faults. The origin of the high-angle normal faults in the meridional swarms is discussed and it is suggested that basementcover interactions must have occurred. This suggestion is supported by geophysical evidence. Low-amplitude monoclines in the coal seam, and the spacing of swarms 0.9 to 4.5 km apart, may be due to the underlying basement structure.It is clear that postextensional compressive deformation of swarms in the coalfield gave rise to shortening by minor thrust development, and probably also caused the synchronous strike-slip movement on pre-existing normal faults. There is evidence to show that isolated interswarm strike-slip faults in the Lithgow seam, and widely spaced strike-slip faults in the Katoomba seam, may have originated synchronously with such thrusts. The axis of maximum principal compression ('71) for the thrust event was inferred to be near horizontal and aligned approximately E-W. Recent rock mechanics measurements of the present day stress field indicate a similar stress configuration.

The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anorthosite layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spineI-bearingmeta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, and Ni liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

Draft tube circulators are now widely used instead of Pachucas for suspension of slurries in large tall tanks.Precipitators in the alumina industry are an example.Draft tube/tank diameter ratio is critical. Two independent criteria are given for optimum ratio. The hydraulic and energy relationships are defined. These require an impeller of very high specific speed. For a stable and efficient system the impeller should have aerofoil blades with a pitch angle which decreases from hub to tip.The draft tube must be matched to the impeller with inlet baffles above the impeller and flow control vanes below it. Tip recirculation must be suppressed. The tank itself should have a filleted flat bottom.Such a system exhibits the behaviour of axial flow devices with the characteristic undesirable behaviour at low flow.Installed and operating power requirements depend critically on hydraulic design and to a lesser extent on speed reducer efficiency.The problems of re-suspension have been overcome by a patented slot system which also improves behaviour at low flow to permit a more economic design. A number of other practical operating considerations are also discussed.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. Uranium exploration was commenced in 1973 and carried out at a regional scale over a wide area of the northern part of the Camarvon Basin of Western Australia by Minatome Australia Pty Limited and their joint-venture partners. As a result, pervasive uranium mineralization has been found in the Cretaceous sandstones near Manyingee Hills in the Onslow Region, which were probably deposited in a near-shore, fluvia deltaic palaeo-environment.Mineralization is generally found in poorly sorted argillaceous sandstones and siltstones near redox fronts formed by oxidizing waters circulating in reduced sediments. The principal minerals found in the two Manyingee deposits delineated so far are coffinite, uraninite with associated pyrite in the reduced zones, and phosphuranylite, siderite and limonite in the oxidized zones. The presence of dissolved uranium in the superficial aquifers, of secondary uranium minerals as coatings on granitic rocks, and of recent uranium-bearing calcrete sediments, suggest that the whole Cretaceous-Precambrian system has been subjected to the formation ofroll-front type uranium deposits since the Cretaceous. Continuing exploration is locating additional uranium occurrences. The deposits outlined so far are being evaluated for their amenability to in situ leaching tests planned for 1982-1983.

Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63 - 125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.
