"Salt Lake City was founded July 24, 1847, by Mormons under the leadership of Brigham Young. It had a population of 118,110, according to the United States census of 1920, and of 151,968, according to a civic survey, January 1, 1925. The Salt Lake metropolitan district is estimated to have 180,079 inhabitants.The city's area is 51.8 square miles. Its altitude is 4,354 feet. It has 514 miles of streets, of which 91 miles are paved. The streets in the main portion of the city are 132 feet wide and the blocks are 660 feet long. It has 144 miles of street railway and 2,200 electric street lights. It has fifteen parks and playgrounds, forty public schools and six private schools. It has eighty-nine church edifices, of which forty-nine are devoted to denominations other than the Mormon Church.It is the capital of the state, the headquarters of the Mormon Church and the headquarters of most of the mining companies and many other business institutions of the state and adjacent territory.The State University, the State School of Mines and the Inter-Mountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are in the eastern part of the city. Fort Douglas is east of the University the country clubs are in the southeastern portion of the city. The State Fair Grounds are in the northwestern portion.The city is the center of a trade area about 700 miles in diameter and is in almost the exact center of a circle that embraces the principal western mining areas. It is the home of several widely-known mining supply companies and all the other leading concerns in that line are represented by agency or branch house."

GENERAL. THE Tooele plant of the International Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig. 1 is a general view of the plant. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. THE slag performs two useful functions. in open-hearth steel-making. First, it is the means of disposal of all the impurities, save carbon, which are removed from the charge materials in refining the steel, so it must be suited to receiving and retaining as much as possible of undesirable elements with minimum loss of iron and useful alloying elements. Second, the slag serves as a buffer between the flame and the bath and transfers oxygen to the metal at a measured pace contrasted with the violent and difficultly controlled oxidation of the bessemer process. At the same time, the slag is a thermal insulator that limits the rate at which heat can be delivered to the metal from the flame, and a heavy slag blanket thereby serves as a brake on production rates. It has been said with justification that the secret of good steel- making is to make a good slag and the steel will take care of itself. In a broad sense, the subject of slag control includes not only the adjustment of the composition of the slag but also of its relative weight in terms of percentage of the metal-bath weight. The slag is made up essentially of: (1) oxides formed by oxidation of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and iron in the charge, (2) SO2, MnO, MgO, and other oxides charged as such or introduced incidentally with ores or fluxes or by refractory erosion, and (3) lime charged or fed to the heat to neutralize the "acidic" oxides present (SiO2 and P2O5). Obviously, if practically perfect control were possible over the composition of the charge as well as over the oxidation process during the melting period, both slag weight and composition would be very nearly predetermined, and the control problem would be solved. Unfortunately, only a somewhat imperfect control over these factors is possible, so the operator must begin during the lime boil and continue through the refining period to discover and correct departures from the normal pattern of slag development. THE iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana High-lands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Profes-sor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse.

SMITH, Waterbury, Conn.-I would like to ask whether small amounts of iron give the maximum resistance at a low temperature, and if the large amounts of iron raise the temperature at which the maximum resistance occurs? That is, with a small amount of iron, will a maximum be at, say, 10°? F. E. BASH.-With the small amount of iron, the maximum is at a lower temperature, and with the increase of iron, the maximum increases; it seems to come to a maximum and then decrease; that is, increasing the iron up to a certain value increases the temperature at which there is a maximum of resistance, and any increase of iron beyond that value will start decreasing this temperature. With 2 per cent. of iron, the maximum is lower than for 1.5 per cent. which was the value that we found to be satisfactory. F. L. DRIVER,* Jr., Harrison, N. J.-I would like to ask what chance there is of the instrument companies getting together and deciding on standards for both manganin and constantan? We make both of these alloys in this country and we find that each one of the instrument com-panies who buy these materials require different standards of specific electrical resistance and thermal e.m.f. For instance, some of our cus-tomers require an electrical resistance in manganin or therlo of 240 ohms per circular mil foot and others require it with a specific electrical resist-ance of 270 ohms per circular mil foot. They buy these alloys in relatively small quantities so that it means much extra melting and supervision when making up small quantities for each consumer. If something could be. clone to eliminate this, it would be a benefit to the instrument com-panies, who could secure their material more cheaply, and to the manu-facturers, who would not have to spend so much time and effort in special manufacturing.

IT is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investigations1 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper.

MAINTAINING a satisfactory structure in brass and bronze castings has always been a foundry problem of great practical importance. While metallurgists and scientific investigators have not entirely ignored this matter, it has received less of their attention than has been given to iron, steel and the wrought copper and aluminum alloys. Investigation in this field has probably been discouraged to some extent by the complicated nature of the alloys involved. Hundreds of alloys are in more or less common use, most of them containing copper, zinc, lead and tin in-widely varying proportions. They also contain appreciable percentages of iron and antimony as impurities, and often phosphorus, which has been added as a deoxidizer and fluidifier. Small amounts of sulfur are usually present. It is not uncommon to find nickel, sometimes in rather substantial quantities. Traces of other metals are frequently present. So complicated and variable a mixture obviously offers difficulties in. any investigation of the various factors that influence the structure and other properties of the casting.

INTRODUCTION THIS paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the com¬bustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a. quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years' practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HISTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow. The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam. The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.

COALS, other than anthracite, have been so thoroughly studied under the microscope during recent years, that we now know what kinds of plants and what parts of plants form the bulk of lower rank coals from peat to bituminous coal. The microscope has also shown the state of preservation of such vegetation as well as the nature and distribution of products of plant decay. These and further details have been ascertained mainly through the employment of two methods of attack, section cutting and maceration. Anthracite has failed to respond to these methods, so well adapted to the study of lower rank coals and, therefore, has been neglected by investigators to such an extent that there is much doubt as to its microscopical characteristics. The object of this paper is to lift anthracite from its realm of obscurity by demonstrating the wealth of microscopical detail that is revealed when reflected light is used on a properly polished and etched surface and, further, to show the relationship between anthracite and bituminous coal.

TO these reports you are referred for additional details of the year's activity. Finances.-Income for 1933 from all sources totaled $121,690 com- pared with $138,331 in 1932. Incidentally, this exceeded the income as estimated in the budget by $7,190; the largest item being a "surplus" of $3,316 over the budget expectancy as to member dues. As compared with 1932 the most important items of shrinkage in income were $9,000 from dues and initiation fees; $5,500 from the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY; and $2,500 from sales of publications other than the magazine.

THE illustration below shows the design of the face of the clock to be erected as a memorial to the American engineers who gave their lives overseas in the World War. It will be placed in the tower of the library at Louvain, which has been rebuilt through contributions from America. Large clocks seldom have figures on their faces, and each hour on this one will be marked by a gold star, the four faces containing 48 stars, one for each State of the Union. Contributions toward the memorial have been received from every one of the States, and from Alaska and Hawaii as well, but additional subscriptions are invited by the Com-mittee which is arranging for the memorial.
