Employees and dollars are necessary to all enterprises and any force, such as fire, which destroys either, can bring very serious consequences, including business failure. Since everyone acknowledges the necessity of conserving human life, we will devote most of our paper to the economic factors involved. A coal-mine fire is considerably more difficult to combat than a fire in a surface building because of the combustible surroundings in the mine, the explosive gases emitted from the coal, the suspension of explosive dust when mine timbers burn and the unsupported roof falls, the limited space in which approach to the fire can be made, and the limited avenues of escape. A survey of coal-mine-fire protection indicated that a rather low value was being placed on property and equipment. This prompted comparison with other industries. The comments made in this comparison are not intended as an indictment of the coal industry, since we do have mines that are well protected against fire, but the comments on conditions at the mines visited are factual and may help others to improve similar conditions. SURVEY PROCEDURES Plants of the steel, aluminum, rubber, chemical, and petroleum industries were surveyed, and all facets of the fire-protection scheme were covered. The industrial plant invariably had four times as much water readily available for instant use than the mine. In many mines where water is available, no equipment for applying it is provided, such as hose, nozzles, and adapters, so that time is lost in collecting this equipment. (See Table I.) EXTINGUISHERS Many more and generally larger portable extinpishers are available at the plant as compared to the mine. The extinguishers are generally placed nearer to sources of danger. In addition, respiratory protective equipment is always available at strategic points in plants but only in a few mines. (See Figs. 1 and Table 11) INSPECTING AND TESTING EQUIPMENT Plant water facilities are checked weekly and flushed at 6-month intervals, and hose is pressure-tested at least yearly; some mines check water yearly, but hose is not tested unless used. Fire extinguishers are inspected weekly in plants and completely overhauled yearly; one mine had monthly checks and overhauls only after use. FIRE BRIGADES AND TRAINING Every plant had designated fire-fighters and some complete full-time brigades; at one mine a chief mechanic was designated as being in charge of fires, and other depended entirely upon officials who might not be familiar with the equipment. COST OF FIRES AND PERCENTAGE OF CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN FIRE PROTECTION The direct cost of recent mine fires ranged from $128,000 to $240,000; indirect costs, such as lost tonnage, idled equipment, lost orders, and the like might run the cost to over $500,000. (See Figs. 2 and 3).

THE consideration of the present value of a mine is of great importance when planning for the operation of a property,, and it is particularly so in the case of mines that have large ore reserves. At various times during the past 15 years, the writer has had occasion to make rather thorough studies of the subject, and has been greatly impressed by certain important points which these studies have brought out, points which, though they may be well known, are often lost track of in the rush to obtain low mining costs and high daily tonnage output. . It is the object of this paper to present briefly, and in a general way, some of these points, and especially those which have to do with the relationship which (1) ore reserves and plant capacity, (2) grade of ore mined, and (3) ore losses in mining, bear to the present value. Present value, sometimes called present worth or actuarial value, means the value today of the future earnings of an enterprise. Great industrial, manu-facturing or railroad enterprises, if properly handled, go on indefinitely and their value is directly dependent on their estimated annual earnings. Mines, or oil properties, on the other hand, have an earning capacity only until the ore or oil is exhausted, and their present value is dependent not only on their annual earnings but also on their life, which is the length of the period over which they can produce at a profit. A mine, or an oil property, is a "wasting asset," while an estab-lished manufacturing business is not, or should not be. In other words, the present value of a mining property. represents a sum of money on which there could be paid from operating profits a determined rate of interest, say 8 per cent., and in addition an amount which, if invested at compound interest as received, would at the end of the life of the mine pay back the present value. In his "Wealth and Income of the American People," Walter Renton Ingalls says: "The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding to the life of the mine."

Temperature-dependent functions of various ten-sile flour stress and fracture parameters were investigated on iron and low composition alloys of Fe-C, Fe-Cr, Fe-Mn, and Fe-Ni. Data were obtained over a range of test temperatures from 200" to -196"C at an initial strain rate of 0.01 min". It was found that the strain-hardening exponent, n, for the Fe-Ni alloys increased significantly at very low testing temperatures with increased alloy addition. Also, the stress and strain at fracture followed a predictable transitional type of behavior. The flour stress-temperature dependence was evaluated employing the relation: M where it is shown that composition can strongly influence the constant M. An empirical formula describing this effect is as follows: M = MI (equivalent at. pct Ni)-'" Some preliminay, tests were run on several commercial steels to test the generality of this relationship. One of the phenomenological explanations of the ductile-to-brittle transition encountered in bcc metals is based upon the difference in the temperature dependence of the flow and fracture stresses.' It states simply that the fracture stress is relatively insensitive to temperature and that the yield or flow stress rises rapidly with decreasing temperature so that, when the flow stress reaches the fracture stress, brittle fracture occurs without appreciable plastic deformation. This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 where the ductile-to-brittle transition is shown to occur at two possible temperatures. The lowest temperature, TB, represents essentially completely brittle behavior while the higher temperature, TN, represents "notch" brittle behavior. Support for this theory is obtained when it is observed that fcc metals, which do not commonly have a ductile-to-brittle transition, also do not commonly exhibit any strong temperature de- pendence of the yield stress. This relationship of yield or flow stress behavior with the ductile-to-brittle transition has been generally observed for most metals representative of these two crystallo-graphic structures. One exception to this generalization appears in the case of tantalum where no apparent ductile-to-brittle transition has been observed. However, this may simply be an indication that this type of behavior is not directly related to the flow stress and that some other mechanism such as twinning must also be operative. A comparison of the typical temperature dependence of the yield stress of some representative metals is shown in Fig. 2. The deposition of calcium carbonate scale on surface and subsurface production equipment creates an operation problem in many oil fields. The formation water in which the carbonate-scale-forming components are initially dissolved becomes supersaturated with calcium carbonate as a result of the drop in pressure during production. The continuous flow of a supersaturated solution through the production equipment results in the growth of a dense layer of calcium-carbonate crystals. For a scale layer to be built up, the supersaturated formation water should contact the walls of the production equipment. The tendency for scale to be deposited, therefore, will be low, if the crude has a low water cut and if the water is finely dispersed in the oil. A scale problem will occur, if at a high water cut part of the water is present as free water. The rate of scale deposition will then be approximately proportional to the rate of free water production. Depending upon where the formation water becomes supersaturated, scale may be deposited in the flow line only, in both flow line and tubing, and in some cases even in the perforations and in the formation near the wellbore. In the South Sumatran fields (Indonesia) the main difficulties encountered due to the deposition of calcium-carbonate scale have been restriction of flow through tubings and flow lines, wear and abrasion of plungers and liners, and stuck plungers or wellhead valves. So far, the only methods of combating the *Presently associated with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd.. Seria. scale problem have been routine acidizing and additional well pulling. As for the pumping wells, it was estimated that some 50 percent of the total well-pulling effort was directly attributable to scale deposition. The most promising alternative was to prevent the deposition of calcium carbonate scale by means of chemicals. Inorganic polyphosphates such as sodium hexametaphosphate and trisodium polyphosphate are known to retard the formation of scale by the "threshold action". They are adsorbed on specific faces of the crystal nuclei and thus prevent crystal growth, thereby stabilizing supersaturation. Polyphosphates are effective at very low concentrations ( a few ppm), and far less than stoichiometric quantities are required to keep the scaling ions in solution. Recent investigations on barium sulfate scale1 have confirmed this mechanism. The types of polyphosphate mentioned can be applied as concentrated aqueous solutions either squeezed into the formation, lubricated down the annulus or injected via macaroni string. Several squeeze jobs with polyphosphate solutions have been carried out in the South Sumatran fields, however, with disappointing results. Lubrication down the annulus and injection through a macaroni string were not considered attractive in this area because of the kind of equipment and the degree of supervision these techniques require. Polyphosphates are also available in a granular, glassy form, which, in contrast with the readily soluble types already mentioned, show an extremely low

The final session was held on Thursday morning. An abstract of the discussion will be transmitted to each delegate present. The topics included: Student relations. Section operation, membership, employment, MINING AND METALLURGY, a new nonmetallic minerals Division. licensing of engineers, and increased allotments of money to Local Sections. Some of the Sections felt that the present limit of $250 allotted to them - from the national treasury was insufficient to carry on their activities, and that this maximum should he increased. A resolution to this effect was passed for transmission to the Board of Directors.

EVERETTE LEE DEGOLYER, past President of the Institute and Anthony F. Lucas Medalist, was presented with the John Fritz Medal at a dinner at the Wal-dorf-Astoria Hotel in New York, Jan. 14. Dr. DeGolyer is the third representative of the Institute in recent years to receive the John Fritz Medal which is awarded jointly by the four Founder Engineering Societies through a board composed of sixteen past presidents. In 1938 Paul D. Merica was given the award "for important contributions to the development of alloys for industrial uses" and in 1933 the distinction was given to D. C. Jackling "for notable industrial achievement in initiating mass production of copper from low-grade ores through application of engineering principles."

A model pillar study was conducted in which the engineering principles of dimensional analysis were applied to the problem of coal mine pillar design. The paper reviews the theory of similitude as applied to the model pillar study conducted in the investigation. An example solution of a design problem is included to indicate how the results of the study may be used as a first approximation in the design of coal mine pillars. The design of mine pillars for adequate support with minimum loss of valuable raw materials has always presented a problem to the mining engineer. Most often, for lack of a better method, past practice has influenced the design of new mine pillars. This process has always left doubt as to the safety factor of the pillars. The work presented in this paper is an initial attempt toward adapting the engineering principles of dimensional analysis to the problem of pillar design in underground mines. The use of the dimensional analysis technique is advantageous because all the variables associated with the problem are considered, and by systematic analysis the relative influence of each variable is determined. The model material utilized in this study was taken from the Helena seam of the Cahaba coal field located in central Alabama. The research study was sponsored by The Southern Electric Generating Co. as part of an over-all rock mechanics investigation of the Helena seam area. THEORY OF SIMILITUDE Model analysis is used extensively in engineering today, particularly in the solution of design problems that defy the classical methods of analysis. Such problems arise when materials with a nonlinear stress-strain relationship are involved, when geo- metric boundaries are difficult to define in simple form, when strains become large, or when partial failure occurs. All of these difficulties usually exist in pillar design problems. Those principles which underlie proper design and construction of models, and the interpretation of test results, comprise the theory of similitude. That is, the theory of similitude includes a consideration of the conditions under which the behavior of two separate entities or systems will be similar, and the techniques of accurately predicting behavior of one from observation of the other. The theory of similitude may be developed by dimensional analysis. Dimensional analysis, as a powerful analytical tool, is developed from a consideration of the dimensions in which each of the important quantities involved in a phenomenon is expressed. It is based on two axioms: 1) Absolute numerical equality of quantities may exist only when the quantities are similar qualitatively. 2) The ratio of the magnitudes of two like quantities are dependent on the units used in their measurement, provided that the same units are used for evaluating each. Dimensional analysis, developed from these two axioms, differs from other types of analysis in that it is based solely on the relationships that must exist among the pertinent variables because of their dimensions, rather than on the relationship of natural laws. In itself, dimensional analysis ~rovides qualitative, rather than quantitative relationships, but when it is combined with experimental procedures, it may be made to supply quantitative results and accurate prediction equations. APPLICATION OF THEORY The design of an adequate mine pillar requires the determination of a design equation and the selection of a dimensional system with which to work. Since force plays an important part in the design of mine support, the FLT (force, length, time) system has been used. This phenomenon is well-known at temperatures above the melting point of aluminum,3"6 whereas in this paper the transformation was studied at temperatures lower than the melting point of the aluminum matrix.

A phase diagram for the Ta-Zr system is presented. The system is of the minimum-melting point type with the 0-zirconium phase decomposing monotectoidally at 785°C and 95.5 at. pct Zr. The minimum solidus temperature is 1875°C and the temperature of the top of the monotectoid loop is 1775°C. Techniques employed included X-ray diffraction and fluorescmce, electron microprobe analyses, diffusion couples, metallography, and melting-point measurements. Errors due to interstitial solutes and in melting observations are particularly common in this system, and their occurrence is discussed. SEVERAL versions of the Ta-Zr phase diagram have been reported in the literature.lm7 Williams et al.' report a diagram of the minimum-melting point type with a monotectoid reaction at 800°C and 12 wt pct Ta. The minimum in the solidus occurs at 1820°C and 25 wt pct Ta, while the top of the monotectoid gap is located at 1780°C and 80 wt pct Ta. The experimental techniques employed were metallography, electrical resistance variation with temperature, dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and direct observation of melting by the technique of Pirani and ~lterthum.' Experience in the Nb-Zr phase diagram has shown that small changes in the interstitial content can cause large shifts in the positions of the phase boundaries. Small amounts of inter -stitials can cause similar changes in the Ta-Zr system and may be responsible for the wide variations in the phase diagrams previously reported.'-' The authors15 have found that alloys containing 0.75 wt pct 0 and 1.0 wt pct Ni with tantalum contents from 19 to 85 at. pct often contain a lamellar or cellular precipitate after annealing above 1400°C. This precipitate is very similar to that reported by pollack,12 Ralls," and Donlevy17 for the Ni-Zr system. In the present investigation, a wider variety of experimental techniques and improved alloy purity were applied to the resolution of errors in diagrams for this system as they now appear in the literature. New results have been obtained in the areas of alloy homogeneity and purity. Errors in the common techniques of direct melting observation in binary alloys have been demonstrated. In the commercially important high-tantalum region, the more accurate metallographic method of solidus determination has been employed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nominal analyses of the materials employed are given in Table I. The zirconium was low hafnium reactor grade iodide crystal bar, and the tantalum was in the form of high-purity sheet. Powders were impossible to use because of gas content. Y.:-This subject is of great and increasing importance, as the exhaustion of the deposits of ore of ideal character compels the iron industry to turn more and more to those which are less desirable on account of physical structure as well as analysis. Thus there has come about the use of the Mesabi ores in this country and also of the Minette ores in Europe, which produce far greater percentages of flue dust than did the lumpy ores first used. It is a matter of common knowledge that the utilization of this flue dust, containing commonly 50 per. cent. or more of metallic iron, has been a problem very difficult and tedious of solution. The number and variety of the solutions now offered is a sufficient proof of this. . I have no intention of going into the merits or demerits of any of these processes as such, but there are certain considerations concerning the effect of their product on the operation and fuel economy of the blast furnace which I believe to be new and which I desire to bring out. There are two methods, so different as almost to be direct opposites of each other, whereby an ore may exercise an unfavorable effect on the economy of the blast furnace. The first of these is well known and results from the ore being refractory and highly resistant to the action of the reducing gases of the blast furnace. This results in its being incompletely reduced when it reaches the zone of fusion and in the reduction being finished by the direct action of carbon in the lower portion of the furnace. This is so well understood as to need little elaboration or comment. There is, however, another action which may be equally as fatal to the economy of the furnace as the foregoing, and as this point is, to the best of my knowledge, not generally appreciated, it is one upon which I desire to lay particular stress. This consists in the ore being, in a sense, too reducible.

A quantitative method for evaluating density of slime coatings has been developed and applied to formation of iron oxide slime coatings on quartz and on corundum. Slime coating density is related to flotation recovery and to properties of the electrical double layer at mineral surfaces. IN spite of considerable study, the nature of slime coatings in flotation is still not completely understood. However, phenomena that control floc-culation and dispersion of colloidal systems are now interpreted in terms of electrical double layers.",' Colloids will flocculate even though the particles carry the same charge, but when two dispersed colloids of opposite charge are mixed. flocculation ensues even more rapidly. Analogous phenomena seem responsible for slime coating on minerals in flotation systems. To shed new light on the issue it was considered desirable to devise a tool that would measure slime coatings. The usual method has been to examine photographs of presumably representative surfaces, after. an intervening washing in running water. But such an examination is non-quantitative, and the changes in chemical environment represented by the washing may have removed the slime coatings that existed during flotation. To provide the possibility for a correlation with electrical double layer phenomena, the experiments were made with quartz, corundum, and iron oxide, for which elec-trokinetic data are available.'-" Since the properties of the electrical double layers of these oxides depend on the pH of the solution, pH will be the most important variable. Furthermore, because the zero point of charge for silica, iron oxide, and alumina occurs at pH 3.7, 8, and 9.5, respectively, the relative charge on the slime and mineral can be changed over wide ranges. Because of its practical importance in quartz flotation, iron oxide powder was chosen as the slime. Also, its uniform composition, contrasting color, and ease of analysis make experimentation simple. In this investigation, correlation was sought between the effect on flotation recovery of slime addition and slime coating density. Materials and Methods Details are available in a thesis by Miaw." The quartz was selected from pure Brazilian crystalline quartz, crushed, sized (65/150 mesh) acid-cleaned, washed, and stored in conductivity water. The corundum (synthetic alumina of high purity prepared by Linde Co., Chicago) was crushed, sized (65/100 mesh) deslimed, boiled in nitric acid, washed, and stored in conductivity water. The iron oxide slime, reagent-grade ferric oxide (—400 mesh) from Allied Chemical & Dye Corp., was heated to 160°C, cooled, and stored in a vacuum desiccator. In the electron microscope the slime particles appeared to be about 0.3µ in size, but their large specific surface (87,900 cm per g, by gas-adsorption method, using krypton) suggests that the actual particles are smaller than 0.3r. Had they been perfect nonporous spheres, they would have had a diameter of 0.13µ.

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

TO SERVE their primary function of balancing supply with demand. crude-oil prices must not only return full cost plus a reasonable earning to the efficient producer but they must also offer an additional reward to stimulate exploration sufficiently to maintain adequate reserves. High prices increase the volume and efficiency of exploration; low prig e- -Idle exploration. Over the last decade average prices for crude oil have been much lower than for the proceeding ten years, and lower even than the average over the life of industry. Under these circumstances no one should be surprised to learn that over this same recent period of discovery of new oil fields has also lagged and fallen below its average level for the previous decade. Crude oil prices have been too ion to support the required activity in wildcatting.

TO give a concise history of the Woman's Auxiliary of the A. I. M. E. is a difficult task and much interesting information must needs be omitted. The organization has grown and evolved so much from its early simple beginning that it seems best to adopt the technique of some of our modern novelists and begin with the latest development. As the headquarters of the A. I. M. E. is in New York, it follows that the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. necessarily has also its central office and government there. The affairs of the organization are administered by a duly-elected president and five vice- presidents, a treasurer, recording secretary, and corresponding secretary and a board of directors, the personnel of which includes each chairman of a section or an elected or nominated representative who is able to attend the monthly meetings of the board and correspond with the section for which she acts, and the chairmen of the five standing national committees, i. e. Educational Fund, Library, Emergency, Membership and Hospitality. The chairmen of these committees are all responsible to the president and board of directors and their activities must be indorsed with their approval.

The technology of gasifying coal to produce synthesis and pipeline gas has advanced significantly in the Past 20 to 30 years. This period has seen the extensive use of oxygen in coal gasification, the development of suspension gasification processes and fluidized-bed gasifiers, the operation of various gasification processes at elevated pressures, and operation of gasifiers under slagging conditions. These developments are discussed, and their application to commercial and pilot plant gasifiers is reviewed. Typical processes for synthesis gas production are described, and operating results are compared. Pipeline or high-Btu gas may be produced from coal either by catalytic conversion of synthesis gas to methane, or by the direct reaction of coal with hydrogen (hydrogasification) to produce a methane-rich gas. Neither of these methods has been applied commercially, but developments pertaining to each of them are reviewed, and general processing schemes are discussed. The use of coal as a raw material for manufacturing gas has a long and distinguished history. In fact, the gas industry began in the early 1800's when William Murdock demonstrated that it was feasible to produce and distribute gas made by retorting coal. Coal was used exclusively for gas manufacture until the middle of the 19th centruy, when Lowe invented the carbureted water gas process. In that process, coke was one of the raw materials used, so coal was still an important factor in gas manufacture. However the availability and relatively low cost of natural gas in the United States, and its widespread distribution by long-distance pipelines in recent years, has virtually eliminated the use of coal as a raw material for gas manufacture in this country. It should not be inferred from the foregoing that the technology of coal gasification has remained static in the United States and abroad. In fact, in the past two decades many new concepts have been developed in both the science and the technology of gasification. This progress has been a result of the considerable expansion in research on the fundamental chemistry and physics of gasification reactions, and in development work on gasification processes. This expansion in effort stems in part from increased interest in the use of gas as a raw material for the synthesis of chemicals and liquid fuels, and in part from the need to develop methods for gasifying coal and other solid fossil fuels to ensure a long-range supply of energy in the form of gaseous fuel. In these uses of gas, synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in various proportions, is the starting material. It may be converted catalytically to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons and other chemicals, or to hydrogen for use in hydrogenation or reduction reactions. Since coal is our most abundant fossil fuel, it is inevitable that one day it will regain its prominence as a raw material for gas manufacture. It is of interest, therefore, to consider the present status of gasification technology, directing attention particularly to advances made in recent years. Inasmuch as many comprehensive treatises l-3 and review4-7 of gasification technology are available, no attempt will be made in the present review to cover all processes in detail. Instead, the discussion will be concerned chiefly with typical processes embodying the advances that are most likely to be generally applied. ADVANCES IN GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY For purposes of this discussion the starting point will be the conventional processes that were used for many years for the complete gasification of coal. These were: 1) carbonization in coke ovens followed by gasification of coke with air and steam in cyclic water-gas generators, and 2) fixed-bed air-blown producers. FIGURES for the first 11 months of 1935 indicate that the total coal production of the United States for 1935 will be approximately 416,000,000 tons, or almost identical with the production figures for 1934. Bituminous production will show a gain of about six million tons, and anthracite production a loss of about the same tonnage, compared with the previous year. This does not take into account so-called "bootleg" anthracite coal amounting to approximately 5,000,000 tons. Twenty-nine years ago, in 1906, the production of coal was almost identical with this year's production. At that time, 626,000 men were employed in producing this tonnage, which took a toll of 2138 lives from accidents. In 1935, approximately 540,000 men were required to produce the same tonnage with an estimated loss of 1155 lives. This shows definite safety advancement in the industry, but even so accidents are still costing an average of 3c. a ton more than they should.

Four years of intensive exploration effort by Newmont Mining Corp. came to a climax May 27 in Carlin, Nevada, when local, state and federal officials joined with company officers at a dedication ceremony saluting the start-up of the firm's wholly- owned subsidiary, Carlin Gold Mining Co. Before an invited audience at the plant site, Newmont's President Plato Malozemoff and Nevada's Senator Howard D. Cannon pushed a lever and watched the new melting furnace rotate until a brilliant orange-red stream of molten gold poured forth from its mouth. Two 1200-oz bricks of bullion were poured that day, and they are the first of many that will lift this mine into the number two slot among U.S. gold producers and fourth among all gold mines on the North American continent. Although Newmont Mining first entered the gold mining business in 1929 in Grass Valley, California, the Company had operated no gold producers since the well-known Government directive L208, issued in 1942, closed down U.S. gold mines for the duration of World War 11. Now it is back in the business in a big way-a $10 million mine and plant capable of producing 200,000 oz. per year. All the gold from the Carlin operations is earmarked for the U.S. Mint in San Francisco.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.
