The phosphate industry is the fourth-ranking mineral industry in Tennessee; it has an annual value of 13,000,000 and a yearly production of almost 2,000,000 tons of phosphate ore. Tennessee, at present, is second in rank of phosphate production in the United States. In accord with the importance of this mineral commodity, the Tennessee Division of Geology, is conducting a continuing study of the industry' and the raw s, materials upon which it is dependent. Of the three type's of phosphate found in Tennessee, the brown phosphate rock of the Bigby faces of the Bigby-Cannon limestone is by far the most extensive in occurrence and is the only type being mined at the present time. Because of the importance of the brown phosphate ores, our Division has mapped , in detail the outcrop pattern of the Bigby facies of the Bigby-Cannon limestone. The geologic mapping was done by Dr C. W. Wilson, Jr. and others under his super-vision and the geology plotted on 7 1/2-minute topographic maps, with scale of 1 to 24,000 or 1 inch equals 2,000 feet. These maps will be available for use in the near future and will be published later-with complete geologic coverage.

The adsorption of copper and lead und their subsequent xanthate uptake were compared at pH 3.0, 6.0 and 9.2 on both fresh and oxidized sphalerite. The extent of adsorption and the rate of adsorption were strongly dependent on pH, with the highest adsorption of Cu and Pb being at pH 9.2. In the presence of both Cu and Pb, Cu adsorption was enhanced and Pb adsorption was suppressed. The adsorption kinetics of Cu and Pb were characterized by two- and three-stage adsorption processes, respectively. The exchange ratio of Cu to Zn was about one and that of Ph to Zn was greater than one and varied with pH. The uptake of xarlthate on "activated" sphalerite was dependent on pH. The rnaximum uptake was found to be at pH 6.0 for Cu-activated sphalerite artd at pH 9.2 for Pb-activated sphalerite. A measure of "activation strength" based on inetal ion adsorption and xanthate uptake was introduced. The activation strength of Cu to Pb was about one at acidic pH, but it was higher at neutral (pH -6) and alkaline (pH -3) conditions. The oxidation of sphalerite decreased Pb and, especially, Cu adsorption and decreased xanthate uptake.

Controlled blasting experiments in small development drifts were conducted at CANMET's Experimental Mine, from August 1992 to November 1993. The objective of these experiments was to develop suitable controlled blasting techniques for small development headings drilled by jackleg with 32 mm diameter holes. The experimentation also aimed to provide insight into blast damage mechanisms. Particular attention was given to the physical-mechanical properties of the rock and the rockmass structural data in order to make the results applicable to other geological environments. The drift faces were approximately 2.4 m by 2.4 m with 36 to 43 holes drilled to a depth of 2.4 m. Cartridged water gels, emulsions and semigelatin dynamite were used in the cuts and as primers, ANFO as the main explosive and decoupled 19 mm diameter semigelatin dynamite charges were used in the perimeter holes. Smooth blasting techniques and pre-splitting were tested in the underground mine. All the blasts were monitored with a multi-channel blast vibration monitor to which was attached sets of high frequency geophones and accelerometers. This first set of experiments has illustrated the efficiency of con-trolled blasting techniques to reduce blast damage and demonstrated the need for further research to improve the safe and efficient use of explosives.

Smooth-blasting techniques and presplitting were tested in the underground mine. All of the blasts were monitored with a multichannel blast-vibration monitor, to which was attached sets of high frequency geophones and accelerometers. These experiments demonstrated the efficiency of controlled-blasting techniques for the reduction of blast damage and also demonstrated the need to improve the safety and efficiency of using explosives.

US mine operators frequently fail to investigate more cost effective and productive bulk material handling systems because surface mines seem to lend themselves to truck ore haulage. In this country, as a result, use of conveyors to move heavy loads from mine to process facilities has been minimized, if not actually neglected. In contrast, there are more than 50 conveyorized surface mines in successful operation around the world. These mine operators have learned that properly applied conveyorized systems can offer major savings in capital and operating costs, which contribute to improved profits when combined with other proven mining technologies. Growing acceptance and application of conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines also points up how unique each mine is and how careful planning contributes to maximum mine effectiveness. Because of these differences, mining executives and technical and operating staffs need to develop an understanding of three factors in applying conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines: • Why each mine will benefit from the type of automation permitted by conveyorized operation, •What kind of equipment is available, and • What applications most effectively demonstrate the first two factors in action - hauling either ore or waste. The conveyorized systems considered in this presentation have production rates from 0.5-2.7 kt/h (500-3,000 stph). Worldwide, these systems have been operating since the early 1960s. Advantages of Conveyors Why do you want conveyorized bulk material handling? First, it almost always provides lower operating and maintenance costs. Second, it frequently requires lower initial capital costs and almost always requires lower capital costs over the life of the surface mine. Third, it provides comparable operating availability, and finally, it frequently gives comparable operating flexibility - depending on the mine plan. Cost avoidance can be accomplished with modern production methods. These, in turn, permit increased productivity and reduced operating costs such as those for energy, maintenance, and manpower. It has been demonstrated in European surface mines and elsewhere, that conveyor systems frequently require lower initial costs than does truck haulage. Almost always such operations require lower capital costs over the mine life. Those costs include the continual addition of haulage trucks to both accommodate the increasingly difficult haulage routes and fulfill replacement requirements when trucks wear out. Conveyor systems handling ore in numerous large crushing and port facilities, which have operated since the early 1950s, have clearly demonstrated a useful conveyor life of more than 25 years. In contrast, off-highway trucks have life spans of six to eight years. The following examples illustrate comparative capital costs to purchase conveyor systems and comparable truck haulage units. Example 1 The ore haulage route from point A to point B is level and 610m (2,000 ft) long. The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be transported at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). The installed capital costs to provide a properly designed conveyor that will transport the described material from point A to B is about $450,000. The capital cost to purchase three 77-t (85-st) off-highway trucks and one spare truck - which would provide equivalent capacity - would be about $1.2 million. The truck cost estimate is based on a 6 min. or 771 kt/h (850 stph) truck cycle time. Truck efficiency is estimated at 0.8. Each 77-t (85-st) truck would have an actual haulage rate of 617 kt/h (680 stph). Therefore, three trucks would be necessary to transport the designated tonnage of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). A movable crushing plant would be located at point A for the conveyors and a permanent crushing plant at point B for the truck haulage system. Capital costs for these primary crushing plants were not included in the calculations for either system because the capital costs are frequently comparable. Example 2 The transport route from point A to point B is 610 m (2,000 ft) horizontally and 122 m (400 ft) vertically - on a 20% grade (Fig. 1). The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be moved at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph).

The drill-and-shoot excavation of the two underground Pumphouses for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Mainstream Pumping Station is described. The construction sequence involved the concurrent excavation and support of the two 19.2 m (63 feet) wide by 83.6 m (274 feet) long by 29.3 m (96 feet) high caverns. Excavation was interrupted after taking the 6.1 m (20 feet) high top heading in order to cast-in-place a 0.2 m (8 inch) thick by 19.2 m (63 feet) wide concrete arch. The remaining 23.3 m (76 feet) of rock was then excavated in benches below the concrete arch. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Twenty-four kilometers (15 miles) southwest of the city of Chicago, Peter Kiewit Sons' Co., in a joint venture with John F. Shea Co., and Kenny Construction Co., has successfully completed the construction of the Mainstream Pumping Station for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. The five year, 169 millon dollar project is a vital component in Chicago's Deep Tunnel and Reservoir Plan in that its function is to lift the sanitary/ storm sewage back up to grade from 107 m (350 feet) below ground, and pump it to the treatment facilities 8 km (5 miles) away.

The Wellman-Lord SO2 Recovery Process is operating commercially at one location in this country and at two locations in Japan. Tail gases from a sulfuric acid plant, from an oil fired steam generator and from a sulfur recovery unit are the respective applications. 1) At the Olin Corporation's Paulsboro, New Jersey, stack gas from a spent acid regenerative sulfuric acid plant-45000 SCFM - is treated in the W-L unit to reduce sulfur dioxide concentrations from 4500 ppm to less than 500 ppm. 2) At the Japan Synthetic Rubber plant in Chiba Prefecture, stack gas from an oil-fired steam generating plant - 120,000 SUM - is reduced from 2100 ppm S02 to less than 200 ppm. 3) At the Toa Nenryo Kogyo refinery in Kanagawa Prefecture, tail gas from a sulfur recovery (Claus) unit - 41,000 SUM - with, an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 13000 ppm is reduced to less than 200 ppm. The three installations are operating successfully and are capable of reducing S02 emissions to levels significantly below the concentration guaranteed. With the one exception of a higher than guaranteed chemical make up requirement at Paulsboro, utility and chemical requirements will be less than design.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. Zirconium is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth?s crust and it most often occurs in the form of silicate (as zircon), less often in the oxide form (as baddeleyite or caldesite). Historically, the world?s production of zircon was entirely derived from mining and processing beach sands or heavy mineral sands that were being exploited primarily for their titanium content, i.e., to generate TiO2 feedstocks that would be used for making titanium pigments and, to a lesser extent, titanium metal. Zircon was then regarded as a byproduct, with the sharply fluctuating prices typical of a commodity where the supply is essentially involuntary and not truly responsive to market demand. However, in recent years, zircon has shown considerable mining investment appeal in its own right. Projects have been planned ? and some have already come to fruition ? based mainly on the zircon potential of the deposit. Booming Chinese demand for zircon to meet the requirements of the ceramic and zirconium chemical sectors has been a major factor causing zircon prices (f.o.b. Australia) to surge from US$674/t ($611/st) at [ ] the end of 2005 to beyond US$2,400/t ($2,177/st) by the end of 2011.

The reforestation potential of bauxite mining spoils by seeding was examined on this research work. The experimental plot was established on the location Strofi Koukouvista 5, Ghiona Mountain. The experiment consists of 3 species (Pinus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Spartium junceum) with 4 sowing treatments and 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). The treatments were: (1) broadcasting; (2) broadcasting and soil cultivation; (3) broadcasting with straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion; (4) broadcasting with soil cultivation, straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion. Third year results show that spring is better than autumn as a sowing season. Only the Spartium junceum species were found to germinate and survive in autumn. The results are better for all the species on the spring seeding. The most effective treatments for Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus nigra are 3 and 4 while for the Spartium junceum even simple broadcasting shows good results although the best ones are achieved with treatments 2, 3 and 4. The paper?s findings show that reforestation by sowing could be effective for some species but further experimentation with other species is recommended. Concerning Robinia pseudoacacia, testing of different seed preparation treatments is needed in order to maximize the germination of seeds.

The Georgia kaolin district is the world’s largest producer of kaolin. Georgia production tripled from 2.87 Mt (3.17 million st) in 1968 to8.35 Mt (9.2 million st) in 1998. Development of the Georgia kaolin industry can be traced to the identification of the mineral resource, the adoption of innovative process technologies and the creation of markets for kaolin. Georgia kaolin is an abundant and high-quality resource that shows a range of advantageous properties. Technical developments in wet processing, delamination and calcination allowed production of high-value products. The use of kaolin pigments in the paper industry provided a market that absorbed the rapid growth in kaolin production.

Interpretive geotechnical investigations were performed for the construction of approximately 15,250 m (50,000 ft) of wastewater interceptor tunnels in Austin, Texas. Subsurface materials consist of claystone (or clay shale), siltstone, altered volcanic tuffs, chalk and limestone. Special conditions include multiple crossings of Onion Creek with cover ranging from about 1/2 to 3 m (2 to 10 ft.), and the potential for mixed-face conditions consisting of water-bearing gravels overlying clay shale or siltstone. The methods and results of the geotechnical investigations are discussed and the inferred construction conditions are compared to those encountered during tunneling. A suggested format is presented for interpretive geotechnical reports for underground construction projects.

This paper reports on research on leaching pyrite in a germ-free system. The effects of mineral particle size, pulp potential and various oxidation agents on pyrite leaching were studied. The results indicated that a smaller mineral particle size leads to a higher leaching rate of pyrite. The optimum results were obtained with a mineral particle size of -0.037 mm. The pulp potential reflected the leaching process and an increasing pulp potential improved pyrite leaching. The leaching rate rapidly increased with the addition of oxidation agents such as Fe3+ and H2O2. However, the precipitate generated by ferric ion coated the surface of the pyrite and prevented further leaching.

As part of the City of Portland, Oregon?s East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project, nine separate 2,130 mm (84-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe microtunnel drives totaling approximately 2,380 m (7,808 ft) are being constructed to divert flows from several of the existing outfalls to the main tunnel. The drives were constructed in challenging ground conditions that include soft soils under the ground-water table, large amounts of wood and metal debris, and close proximity to sensitive structures. While all of the drives will be addressed, the focus of the paper will be on the 931 m (3,055 ft) continuous drive connecting Outfall 46, currently the longest microtunnel driven in North America.

Filtration of hematite ore slurries can be a bottleneck in some hematite processing plants due to inadequate filtration rates caused by the dispersion of fine particles. Flocculation of fine particles in the slurry decreases the specific cake resistance of the filter cake allowing for increased filtration rates. CO2 sparging of hematite slurry was shown to increase the filtration rate by altering the pH and the surface chemistry of the particles. It was shown that an increase in filtration rate of 278% can be accomplished by lowering the pH from 11 to 6.5 using CO2. This was attributed to increased flocculation of hematite and silica particles in the ore.

The HB 2500 hydraulic breaker attachment from Atlas Copco Construction Tools features Krupp percussion technology and a service weight of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs). This makes it ideal for demolition, tunneling, trenching, foundation work, rock mining and secondary breaking. Suitable for carriers in the 29-to 43-t (32-to 47-st) weight class, the HB 2500 accepts maximum hydraulic flow of 219 L/min (58 gpm) at 18 MPa (2,610 psi) of pressure, and delivers an impact rate of up to 550 blows per minute. The HB 2500 features PowerAdapt, a new system that automatically shuts down the breaker in the event that it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier.

The Archean (2.65 b.y.) aged Canning Stock at Copper Mountain, Wyoming contains an average of 20 ppm U. The North Canning and Fuller deposits occur within the enriched interior of the stock. Post-Laramide development of super gene enrichment blankets occurred in wide (25- 100 m) crushed zones. Hematite and chlorite accompany pyrite and sooty pitchblende in the mineralized zones. Reduction mechanisms proposed for deposition of pitchblende are: 1) sulfides, 2) hydrocarbons, 3) bacteria, 4) the water table, or 5) some combination of these. Abundant tar- type organics appear to have preserved the enrichment blankets from degradation. Trace element and radiometric data define target zones, but exploration models focus on favorable structure.

INTRODUCTION The Sunnyside mines of Kaiser Steel Corp. are lo¬cated on the west flank of the Book Cliff Range, a tongue of the Wasatch mountain range in Utah. The mines are 193.12 air km (120 air miles) southeast of Salt Lake City and 40.23 km (25 miles) east of the town of Price. The area has a semiarid climate with an an¬nual rainfall of 304.8 to 381 mm (12 to 15 in.) and a temperature range of -23.3 to 32.2°C (-10 to 90°F). The base of the Book Cliff Range is approximately 1981 m (6500 ft) in elevation with some mountain peaks in excess of 3048 m (10,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The Sunnyside mines were opened in the late 1890s and have been operated continuously since that time. Kaiser Steel leased the No. 2 mine in 1942 and pur¬chased the entire property in 1950. There are three mines adjacent to one another, each with its separate access, ventilation, and haulage. The three mines en¬compass an area extending 12.87 km (8 miles) along the outcrop and dipping northeasterly 2.41 to 3.22 km (11/z to 2 miles) into the Book Cliffs. During 1975, only the No. I and No. 3 mines were operating to sup¬ply 908 184.7 t/a (1,000,000+ stpy) of clean coal to the Kaiser Steel mill at Fontana, CA. Sunnyside coal is blended with coal from the Kaiser Steel mine near Raton, NM, and with purchased coal from noncompany sources to form the mix for the coke ovens. At that time, Sunnyside operated three longwall units and five to seven continuous miner units. Typical production for that time came from one miner unit pillaring an area not conducive to longwall mining; one or two miner units on construction or modernization projects, and the remaining units used to develop future longwall panels. Longwall mining has been a part of the Sunnyside scene since 1961 when the first panel was set up in the lower Sunnyside seam of the No. 3 mine. Through 1975, 27 longwall panels were mined (Fig. 2). Of the more than 47 173 604 t (52,000,000 st) of clean coal that were taken from the property through 1975, 6 350 292.9 t (7,000,000 st) were mined by longwall methods. Coal was brought to the surface in 4.5-t (5-st) mine cars and crushed to -152.4 mm (-6 in.) before entering the preparation plant. Coarse coal is cleaned by Baum jigs and fine coal (-28 mesh) is cleaned in flotation cells. The coal is reduced to 50.8 x 0 mm (2 x 0 in.) and belted to an aboveground storage pile with a ca¬pacity of approximately 113 398.1 t (125,000 st). The coal is gravity fed through two 1.52-m (5-ft) diam culverts directly into railroad cars, which pass beneath the storage pile through an arched excavation. Eighty-four 90.7-t (100-st) cars make up a unit train which makes the round trip to the steel mill in four days. Additional trains are scheduled in as demands dictate. Loading rates in excess of 13 607.8 t/h (15,000 stph) have been attained. Geology The coal seams of this area are of Cretaceous age and are classed as a medium volatile bituminous coal. coal, with a sulfur content less than 1 % and 6 to (20-mile) zone of the Book Cliffs, and this area is owned or under lease by either Kaiser Steel or US Steel. Coal in adjacent areas is noncoking but an excellent steam coal, with a sulfur content of less than 1 % and 6 to 7% ash. Sunnyside coal contains 40% volatile, 53% carbon, less than 1 % sulfur, and 51/2 to 61/2 % ash after washing. There are two minable seams throughout most of the Sunnyside property known locally as the upper and lower Sunnyside. Separation between the seams varies from less than 300 mm (1 ft) near the southern boundary adjacent to the US Steel Columbia mine, to over 12.19 m (40 ft) in areas of the No. 3 mine in the center of the Sunnyside property. The upper seam varies in height from 1.2 to 1.98 m (4 to 61/2 ft) while the lower seam varies in height from 1.52 to 4.28 m (5 to 14 ft) in areas of No. I mine where the two seams apparently come together. The majority of early work was con¬centrated in the upper seam which has a stronger roof and a lower sulfur content. When Kaiser Steel began mining the No. 3 mine in the early 1950s, it mined in the lower seam beneath the old workings with conven¬tional and continuous mining equipment. Numerous bounces and pressure points created by unextracted pillars and barriers in the upper seam made this a low¬production, high-cost mine and brought about the ad¬vent of the first longwall system. The first unit, while small by today's standards, successfully mined panels that had been all but given up and saved the mine from closure. There were areas that could not even be mined by longwall because of the erratic extraction in the upper seam. The system was successful enough to allow operations to gain access to and develop virgin areas of the upper seam. Development of longwall mining in the No. 3 mine has been confined to the upper seam since late 1964. With the almost complete extraction afforded by the longwall system, it is felt the lower seam can be successfully worked in future years (Fig. 3). In most of No. 1 mine, only the lower seam (or lower seam and upper seam combined) is minable, except in the northwest portion where a rock split has again separated the seam into two 1.83 to 2.13-m (6 to 7-ft) thick beds. In this area, the upper seam or upper split is being mined. The separation between seams at the present workings in this area varies from 0.609 to 6.1 m (2 to 20 ft). It is hoped that most of the lower split can be mined using shield supports and/or what¬ever new technology is developed in the coming years. The coal seams in this area dip to the northeast at an average grade of 10%. The dip near the outcrop reaches 22% and gradually decreases downdip. Over¬burden ranges from a few meters at the outcrop to 762 m (2500 ft) over some of the deeper workings. In the next several years, some overburden will be in excess of 914 m (3000 ft) as the lower mine workings extend ever deeper under the Book Cliffs. To cope with the

Four native copper ores, two conglomerate and two amygdaloidal, were tested to determine their amenability to sorting. One of them, a conglomerate ore from the Kingston mine, showed a high sortability as evidenced by an 80 pct recovery of copper in the minus 6-, plus 1/2-inch size range. Using the Kingston as a case example, the cost of mining and concentrating was estimated for a standard case and five optional cases involving varying degrees of sorting. This analysis indi¬cates that the production cost per pound of copper can be reduced on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 cents per pound along with a significant decrease in capital investment.

Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.
