At Fermilab, a 4000-ft long underground complex has recently been constructed for a high-energy physics experiment. The complex is sited up to 350 ft, below grade principally in bedrock. The rock excavations were mined by TBM and drill and blast methods and supported by a combination of rock bolts, dowels and shotcrete. Water control was achieved using a combination of pre- and post-excavation grouting, drainage systems, drip shielding and air desiccation measures.

Due to variation in the geological natures of underground coal mines, especially when the entry?s roof/floor are soft and weak, it is vital to select an appropriate roof bolting system to ensure entry stability, coal production, and miner?s safety. No single type of roof bolting system perfectly fits for various types of openings, even within a mine. From the results of continuous research on roof bolting in the past 10 years, the authors used a novel concept of ?Self-screwed? mechanism to develop five types of roof bolting under a patented Self-screwed Tube Bolting System (STBS)©. This roof tube bolting system can be applied to meet different timing-strength requirements under varying mining conditions to increases the stability of mine workings. This paper outlines the structures and mechanisms of the five types of self-screwed roof bolting systems along with their unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and limitations. Two case studies using a Self-screwed Tube Drilling Bolting (STDB)©, one of the five types of roof tube bolting systems, show the principles of mechanics, suitability and parameters for a mine entry and a subway?s construction/ supports in the surrounding soil layers and soft sands, respectively are presented. The results confirmed the time dependent anchorage capacity between predictions and on-site measurements. Currently, other types of the self-screwed tube bolting systems are also being applied to different coal mines in China to increase entry stability and meet safety requirements.

The Miami In-situ mine of BHP Copper is located in Globe-Miami, Arizona. The mine leaches mineralized leach capping over a supergene enriched sulfide deposit, and has produced over 500 million lbs of copper during the last 50 years. The Miami unit has identified several opportunities to enhance and expand in-situ production. A computer block model consisting of strict geologic controls, mineralogy, and metallurgical data was developed to assist in the determination of the leachable copper resource. An understanding of the accessibility and solubility of the resource to leaching solutions and the integration of hydrogeologic and hydrometallurgical information was necessary for completion of this project.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. Velocity of detonation (VOD) is an important variable when evaluating the performance of mine blasts. Typically, for a VOD measurement, individual probes have to be loaded into each blast hole that requires a measurement, which increases the loading time and is not representative of the whole blast. Experimental studies of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of explosive charges show that electric and magnetic field signals are observed when chemical explosions occur in the air, at the ground surface, and in the underground. EMP has the potential to evaluate VOD of the whole blast without impeding the loading process. Due to a variety of physical causes which make the electromagnetic effects complex, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Five different antennae were tested with explosives, which are commonly used in mining industry. Among the five antennae, aluminum and copper tape, and wire were successful to detect the EMP. INTRODUCTION The measurement of the velocity of detonation (VOD) helps in evaluating and comparing relative performance of explosives in mine blasts. A VOD of an explosive is usually predicted by empirical mathematical equations or measured in-hole by VOD meters. However, conventional methods to measure a VOD have constraints: only a limited number of holes can be measured because cost of consumables for such systems is very high, and systems only allow a certain number of holes to be measured. The measurement cables have to be placed into the holes prior to loading with explosives which means that preparing to take the measurement is time consuming and has to be well coordinated with the mine. In order to evaluate VOD for a whole blast, there is a possibility of using electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of the explosives. As there are many parameters that affect the generated EMP from explosive charges, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Most studies conducted relate to military related explosives, not the ones frequently used in mining industry. This research has been performed to have a better understanding of EMP from the types of explosives which are commonly used in the mining industry. To discover a way to detect EMP efficiently, five different types of antennae have been studied in the air and in the underground blasting conditions: coil, monopole rod, log periodic, wire, and aluminum and copper tape. LITERATURE REVIEW Conventional methods of measuring VOD Over the years, demands for more accurate theoretical predictions and physical measurements of the effects of the explosives have increased. Especially when both demand and commodity price decline, mining companies are keen to understand the effectiveness of explosives since it has a direct relationship with fragmentation, which influences their production rate. Since the 1940s, various methods have been devised to determine VOD of explosives.

Since its development, the functional performance equation for ball milling (McIvor, 1988) has facilitated a new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the functional performance mill grinding rate at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining selection rate and breakage size distribution functions. The much simpler ball mill model has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from functional performance analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/ material provider and circuit designer.

American Soda, LLP has commissioned the first solution mine for recovery of naturally formed sodium bicarbonate (nahcolite) from low-grade deposits using high-pressure, high-temperature injection fluid. This project, known as the Yankee Gulch Project, was commissioned33 years after discovery of the deposit and followed an intensive four-year feasibility study that included a full-scale pilot test. The nahcoliteis co-mingled with oil shale and is impermeable. Solution mining is achieved by a combination of thermo-mechanical cracking and dissolution. Elevated temperatures are required to initiate the thermally induced cracking and to enhance solubility of the nahcolite, which is highly temperature dependent. This paper will provide an overview of the development of the project from discovery, characterization, pilot testing, permitting and commissioning, with emphasis on the solution mining aspects.

In bygone days, the mineral engineer spent most of his/her time on the technical aspects of designing, building, and managing mineral operations. In the last few decades, mostly since the 1960s, increasing amounts of engineering man power and time are spent dealing with federal, state, and local government agencies, laws, and regulations. It is not possible to plan, design, build, or operate mines, mills, smelters, or even office buildings without detailed consideration of government regulations and permitting requirements dealing with environment, worker health and safety, etc. The four chapters of this section provide an overview of the social, legal, political, environmental, and health and safety aspects of mineral enterprise. The section sets the stage for the working engineer/geologist in industry, government, consulting, or academe and points the direction for more detailed study in each of these areas.

"The EarthScope Transportable Array (TA) of broadband seismometers (www.usarray.org) was deployed across southwest Wyoming from November 2007 through May 2009. During this time period the Array Network Facility (ANF, anf.ucsd.edu) detected and located a total of six seismic events near the trona-mining district. This lack of seismicity is atypical compared to coal mines employing similar mining methods. In this study, eighteen months of continuous seismic data from several nearby TA stations are reexamined using conventional and correlation-based methods to detect seismic events. Waveform cluster analysis and epicentral locations are used to discriminate between mining induced seismicity (MIS) and seismic energy generated from surface blasts at nearby coal mines. The locations and magnitudes of the 143 newly detected MIS events are compared to regional subsidence as measured by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). INTRODUCTION An abundance of natural resources and a favorable political climate have made southwest Wyoming home to multiple large mining operations. Among these operations are five underground trona mines located approximately 50 km west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The trona mines employ room and pillar, longwall, and solution mining methods over an area roughly 900 km2, and produce a sizable portion of the world’s soda ash (Brown 1995). Historically, in the Rock Springs mining district, several relatively large magnitude seismic events have occurred. These events are thought to have been related to mining activity and have caused notable subsidence (Case 1997). The largest event in the region recorded by seismometers, ML 5.1, has been confirmed as the 1995 Solvay Trona Mine collapse (Pechmann et al. 1995). In addition, blasting at surface coal mines near Rock Springs produces significant amounts of seismicity; approximately 50% of all daytime seismic events in the Mountain time zone from 2007 to 2009 locate near an active surface mine in this region (Astiz et al. 2014). Much of the current research related to surface subsidence and induced seismicity focuses on wastewater impoundment (Ellsworth 2013) and hydraulic fracturing. The observable seismicity in geological injection environments is widely variable and McGarr (2014) has argued that, in such environments, the maximum amount of seismic energy that can be released is proportional to the injected volumes. Like injection environments, in extraction (mining) environments seismicity is highly variable depending on many geological and operational variables (Boltz et al. 2012; Carnec and Delacourt 2000; Fritschen 2010; Iannacchione et al. 2005; Sen 2013) and does not always correlate well spatially with subsidence, a surface expression of extraction at depth."

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. "In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. "In 2017, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 6 percent from 2016 (Table 1). The value of metals produced domestically increased by 12 percent and the value of industrial minerals produced domestically increased by 3 percent. Some metal commodity values (cobalt, magnesium metal and palladium) increased by more than 35 percent in 2017 from 2016 owing to higher prices.Some U.S. metal mines and processing facilities remained idle in 2017, including three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and a byproduct vanadium production facility in Utah. In contrast, new gold mines opened in late 2016 and 2017 in Nevada and South Carolina, respectively, and iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota restarted or operated for the full year. In addition, increased oil and natural gas drilling activity led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling. Production of some industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction, remained essentially unchanged in 2017, a reflection of the limited growth in construction activity. The production of some metals, including iron and steel, aluminum and other nonferrous metals and nonmetallic mineral products increased. Overall, mining activity trended upward as the result of increases in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

Since the turn of the century the mining industry in the United States has had a number of serious mine explosions, fires and ground fall disasters that have led to a major re-evaluation of mine communication and rescue practices. One of the hindrances of current underground communication technologies is the potential of lost or cut connections when a serious accident, such as an explosion, fire, inundation or major ground fall, takes place. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act)1 mandated that each underground coal mine in the U.S. must provide for two-way wireless, post-accident communications between underground and surface personnel as well as electronic tracking of underground workers One area that has gained renewed attention in the mining sector is Through-The-Earth (TTE) communication. TTE technology has a major advantage in that transceiver devices can be carried by miners and set up quickly during an emergency, since they require no wire connection to the surface. TTE technology uses ultra-low frequency (1 to 4 kHz) electromagnetic waves, requiring relatively large wire loop antennas and highly sensitive receivers. The signal bandwidth is narrow and the permissible antenna currents in coal mines are restricted, which has led to limited usability of TTE technology in the past, as evidenced in research studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s. Yenchek (2012)2 pointed out that recent advances in receiver and signal processing technology have enabled voice and text communication capabilities and much improved sensitivity that offers new possibilities for TTE communication in mining applications. One company that has been developing such technology is Vital Alert Communication Inc. Vital Alert has been providing TTE communications since 2003 with a growing focus on emergency response and portable systems. The company?s Canary® Go System is one such product that looks to provide reliable communication capabilities in a portable, user friendly unit that can be utilized both for normal operation and mine rescue scenarios. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have tested the Canary Go TTE communications system in the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine to determine signal propagation distances, signal quality and aspects of practical application.

"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.
