Ground support systems must provide safe and effective designs for underground excavations under high stress conditions. These systems must be capable to resist dynamic impacts and yielding during the loading process. In this context dynamic testing of the reinforcement and retaining elements that compose the ground support system are required to study and improve the behaviour of these elements under dynamic load events. During the last years, Geobrugg has been working on the improvement of retaining products by testing them in a large-scale impact test facility located at Walenstadt, Switzerland. The test facility is composed of a double level platform with a square-shaped pyramidal trunk geometry, in the upper level housing a loading mass that drop from a height up to 5m. The loading mass is guided by one central steel pipe, and the impact occurs in the sample to be tested located at the lower level in a slab with an area of 3.6m × 3.6m where the ground support system is installed. During the last years, this innovative facility has been used to test several configurations of ground support systems. The results of these tests have enabled to improve the understating of the behaviour of ground support systems under dynamic loads. In this manuscript, the arrangement, measurement, results, and the preliminary analysis of a single impact dynamic test performed during 2021 of a ground support system with a high-tensile steel wire mesh MINAX 80-4.6 is presented.

"The Confederation Line is phase one of Ottawa’s light rail transit, which consists of 13 stops and stations. The project’s center piece is a 2.5 kilometer (1.6 miles) long tunnel with three underground stations leading underneath downtown Ottawa and is constructed within feet of adjacent buildings. The downtown stations, Lyon and Parliament, are caverns approximately 16.5 m (54 ft) by 18 m (59 ft) in a horseshoe configuration constructed in rock, while the third station, Rideau, is approximately 22 m (72 ft) by 18 m (59 ft) in an oval configuration and constructed in mixed ground. The paper will discuss design decisions made early on in the project such as excavation method, unique construction sequencing, and equipment selection, and go on to include corresponding progress rates. The paper also documents design and construction challenges of large caverns in very close proximity to existing buildings and varying ground conditions. Finally, an overview of achieved construction milestones and a current construction progress will be presented. Station cavern excavation is expected to be completed in early 2016. INTRODUCTION The number of urban metro construction projects has certainly increased over the last decades. Cities are growing rapidly all over the planet and many are striving to keep up with the increased demand for public transportation. One of the most feasible types of inner-city transportation with the capacity for large quantities of passengers are metro (subway) systems. Still, large construction projects in dense urban areas often affect the city’s residents in mostly negative ways. During construction, residents face the obstacles of road closures, noise, dust, economic loss for businesses, and property value losses are common. In other words, individuals are directly affected by the way new infrastructures are planned, designed, built and operated. The tunneling industry offers unique opportunities of keeping these side effects to a minimum and possibly avoiding them all together. Although challenged by a variety of constraints (some of which will be discussed in this paper), urban tunneling applications offer a chance to keep cities environmentally, economically, socially, and culturally sound during construction."

I would like to first summarize the relevant health information relating to the workers and general populations around uranium mining as a basis for understanding the hazards associated with these operations and their available remedies. This discussion will summarize the literature on Radon and its daughters, among the most toxic uranium decay products. Second, I will discuss waste handling in the uranium industry: past, present and future, discussing exploration, mining, and milling and the volumes of water and solid and gaseous wastes which are associated with these various phases of uranium operations. This paper will also include a discussion of the various past and present materials handling technologies and their responsiveness to the concern for uranium waste isolation. I will then conclude with a summary of recent modifications in the relevant standards as applied to uranium mining and milling. Joseph Wagoner, a research epidemiologist with the U.S. Public Health Service has summarized the literature on uranium mining and its health effects in his written testimony as a commissioned witness in British Columbia Royal Commission of Inquiry into Uranium Mining in January of 1980, entitled Uranium, The U.S. Experience: A Lesson in History.1 Briefly summarizinq his report, as early as 1546, miners of uranium bearing ores in Central Europe were reported to have unusually hiqh frequencies of fatal lung disease2. As early as 1879, the real nature of pulmonary disorders among these miners was first diagnosed to be malignant neoplasia or lung cancers. Of 655 miners dying between 1875 and 1912, 40% or 276 of these Central Europe miners died of lung cancer.4 By 1939, it was reported that lung cancer mortality rate for miners in these Central European mining districts was several times (9.7 per 1000) higher than that for similar populations in Vienna, Austria (0.34 per 1000). Thus, before uranium mining began in the U.S., there was a considerable body of information linking uranium mining to lung cancers. The U.S. experience can be summarized in Table 1 also from Wagoner's B.C. Eastern U.S. oil shale contains approximately 10 to 12 gallons of oil per ton and 7 to 10 percent pyritic sulfur. Physical beneficiation of these low grade shales using froth flotation provides a high grade material which will make extraction of oil more economically attractive. The Alabama oil shale used in the present study contained 16.46 percent organic carbon and 14.5 gallons of oil per ton as determined by Fischer assay. Liberation size of the kerogen was estimated at 10 /-Lm. 'Ken-Flote' column flotation technology provided a high grade concentrate containing as much as 60 percent organic carbon, however, carbon recovery was about 60 percent. Carbon recovery was improved to 75-85 percent while maintaining concentrate grades in excess of 40 percent carbon by providing longer retention time in the column which facilitated effective bubble-particle collision and attachment.

Flowsheet flexibility in new 750 TPH coal cleaning plant provides three unusual capabilities. Two compartment drum coarse H.M. washer can be adapted to provide two stage separation. Coarse section of plant can be operated without fine section when washing surface mined coal. Fine section can operate with flotation cells bypassed if strip coal oxidation kills the froth. Plant can be fed by belt from bulk storage, front end loader from storage piles and truck from the mines. Raw coal and each of four washed products can be fed by belts to three separate loading points on two separate railroads.

Studies in eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and southwestern Pennsylvania determined whether subsidence caused by longwall mining influences soil moisture and tree growth. Soil moisture was measured both over new longwall panels and over an unmined control area throughout the growing seasons of 1990, a wet year when the panels were excavated, and 1991, a dry year. No significant effects of mining could be detected. Tree growth was studied in two pairs of woodlots. In each pair, one woodlot was located over a longwall panel excavated about 1980 and the other over an unmined area. Differences in tree growth between mined and unmined areas were neither significant (for most species) nor consistent in direction. The above results imply that if mining does have impacts they are likely to be highly site-specific and localized such as by disruptions of springs or soil slippage.

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

"This study sought to identify changes in continuous mining machine (CMM) operators’ risk perception and risk behaviors as a result of adding a proximity detection system (PDS) into their environment. To accomplish this research task, 9 CMM operators from 5 locations were interviewed. Interviews were thematically analyzed for constructs including patterns in risk perception and behavior before and after PDS integration and the process of adapting to the PDS. Operators discussed standing in the red zone less than they did before using the PDS; however, they also discussed other risky decisions they made while learning how to operate their CMM with the PDS technology such as “cheating” the technology and working faster to meet production goals. The process of relearning job tasks with technology and unintended behaviors as a result of that relearning process need to be taken into account when introducing new technology into the mine environment. The study results show an in-depth view of mine workers’ perspectives and how their job tasks and environment could be or are affected when learning how to use new technology that are relevant to companies and mine operators when introducing new technology into the mine environment. INTRODUCTION Established “red zones” can help prevent striking and pinning incidents by providing guidance to continuous mining machine (CMM) operators about where they should stand and not stand while operating a CMM. Although red zones influence operator placement positions, these guidelines are not foolproof safety mechanisms. Depending on the job task and circumstances of the mine environment, a CMM operator may unintentionally or intentionally stand in a red zone. For example, CMM operators may work in close proximity to their CMM for better visual attention cues and the ability to work at a higher rate of production [1-3]. To further enhance protection and prevent collisions between vehicles and mine workers, a proximity detection system (PDS) was developed for the industry. The PDS determines an individual’s position relative to a specific piece of machinery, issues visual and/or audible warnings to the mine worker to change positions, and, if necessary, disables machine motion [4]. The introduction of new technology within other sectors has been identified as a factor that influences work decisions. Specifically, previous research demonstrates that when technology debuts there can be an initial intrinsic risk perceived among users about how the technology will interact with their current environment and behaviors; however, these ambiguities, including the possible risks and benefits, are seldom studied [5]. Some research suggests that the constant presence of technology can disrupt situation awareness and decision-making capabilities by increasing worker responsibilities and worker cognitive demands [6-8]. Further, if workers’ perceived risks both with and without technology are misjudged, unsafe decisions that result in human error and injury may be more likely [9-11]. Although these statements are provided within a broad contextual framework, they support the need to study how technology is perceived among end users in their own environment. Because research about technological impact on worker behaviors has suggested both positive and negative consequences of technology, this issue is worth addressing in the mining industry. Specifically, research has not determined whether CMM operators view their placement choices in the red zone as safe or risky and what effect PDS technology has, if any, on risk perception and subsequent risk behavior."

Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. Sand-and-gravel aggregates have become the number-one, nonmetallic-mineral resource in the world. Surficial aggregate deposits of economic size are becoming increasingly rare in most parts of Canada. In southern Saskatchewan, this is especially true, and detection and delineation of intertill sand-and-gravel deposits with airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys have proven very successful. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys detect such deposits by their resistivity contrast relative to the surrounding clay-rich soils. Dighem helicopter-borne electromagnetic surveys map soil variations over a large area quickly and cost effectively, greatly reducing the cost of detecting and mapping deposits compared with traditional methods (air-photo interpretation, ground EM, and drilling.). The multiple-frequency EM system used by Dighem can map variations both horizontally and vertically. Magnetic data collected simultaneously are useful in mapping bedrock geology. Both resistivity and bedrock maps aid in the important task of reducing drilling costs and person-hours in the field. The results of the survey are presented as maps of ground resistivity, which are relatively easy to interpret. These maps are produced in the field at the time of the survey, making quick follow-up of the survey possible. Airborne EM surveys can map the extent and depth of aggregate deposits more effectively than is practical from the ground. Since aggregate deposits can vary tremendously in a very short distance (<300 m) large-area EM maps can show both local area variability and also help develop intertill trends. A test survey for the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Department over a 3-km by 5-km area mapped all the known deposits as well as some unknown deposits, subsequently proven by drilling. The test-survey data show that the method not only detected the deposits, but also gave an estimate of the shape (volume) of each of the deposits. Comparison of the data to drill sections shows excellent correlation. Theoretical modelling demonstrates that the multifrequency system can discriminate sand and gravel from bedrock ridges. Since the successful test work, about 725 km2 of ground have been surveyed, resulting in the discovery of four new deposits, which can be used immediately, resulting in significant savings for the Saskatchewan government and taxpayer.

Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, WY trona district since August 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the amount of relatively expensive development mining and improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning in April 1987. As of June 1988, four shortwall panels had been completed using the advancing tailgate, producing more than 739 kt (815,000 st). This paper discusses the effects of the advancing tailgate on shortwall production, development mining requirements, costs, strata mechanics, and ventilation. Shortwall mining is a hybrid extraction method combining the self-advancing hydraulic roof supports from longwall mining and continuous mining machines (Fig. 1). The technique has been only marginally successful at the majority of the nearly 20 installations worldwide. At present, the face at Tg Soda Ash Inc. is the only shortwall operating in the United States and the only noncoal shortwall in existence. Despite the method&apos;s record of limited success, the staff at Tg Soda Ash determined that the conditions in its trona mine were well suited for shortwall mining. The commitment to install a shortwall was made in late 1981 and the first panel commenced in August 1982. Between that time and June 1988, about 3.33 Mt (3.67 million st) of trona have been mined with the system from 15 panels. Annual average productivities have ranged from 818 t/shift (902 st per shift) in 1982 to 1.4 kt/t shift (1591 st per shift) in 1987. Overall, the system has produced an average of 1.3 kt/ shift (1450 st per shift). In April 1987, a method of mining the return air tailgate during shortwall retreat was tested (Fig. 2). The objective was to determine if a return airway could be established and maintained by mining a series of rooms and pillars about 7.6 m (25 ft) past the face support line. The method would allow a barrier pillar to be left between shortwall panels without requiring the mining of a separate return air tailgate.

Clays for building bricks and roofing tiles in Chile are classified as common clays and ball clays, with deposits of sedimentary and residual origin, both Cenozoic in age. Deposits are known from north to south, through 11 of the 13 Chilean Administrative Regions, 18° to 39° South latitude, and from west to east, through three of Chile&apos;s main geomorphic features, namely the Coastal Plains, Coastal Range, and Intermediate Depression. Alluvial and lacustrine sedimentary common clay deposits are located in the northern and southern Intermediate Depression. The average chemical composition of clay deposits in I and I1 Regions, is 58 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 4 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, feldspar, and albite. The average chemical composition of clays in Metropolitan, VI, and VIII Regions, is 52 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 6 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are montmorillonite, quartz, and plagioclase. Residual common clay deposits occur in the Intermediate Depression and in the Coastal Range internal basins, VII, VLII, and IX Regions, and they represent surficial alteration of pumice beds and crystalline rocks. The average chemical composition of clay deposits derived from crystalline rocks is 58 percent SO2, 17 percent A1203, and 9 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, and clinochlore. Clay deposits formed from pumice beds contain 47 percent Si02, 24 percent A1203, and 10 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, feldspar, and cristobalite. Sedimentary ball clay deposits are located in the Coastal Plains and Coastal Range, VI, VII, VIII, and IX Regions, between 34" and 39" South latitude. The average chemical composition of the ball clay deposits is 51 percent ,902, 28 percent A1203, 5 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, quartz, and sericite (illite?). These clay deposits supply the Chilean building sector with over one million metric tons (mt) (1.1 million short tons [st]) of material per year. The average growth rate of clay consumption during the period 1993 through 1997 was 10 percent annually. The clays are used by both mechanized plants and handcraft facilities.

"An ore is a rock regardless of its rarity or value."* The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has some impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. Knowledge of local coal mine roof geology is critical to the design of a safe and suitable mine structure. An automated drill control and data collection system has been designed for a J.H. Fletcher twin-head roof bolter. Drilling parameters collected during the drilling process can be used to interpret geologic features intercepted in the mine roof. The drill and data collection system have been tested in both laboratory and underground settings. Visualization of certain drilling data has shown good correlation with geology drilled. A quantitative prediction model was developed using drilling parameters examined with data visualization. The quantitative model was tested using laboratory drilling data.

"When designing segmental lining at a cross passage, modern solutions try to bear the loads transferred around the opening within the rings by using shear elements in the ring joints. Commonly used shear systems providing coupling are cam & pocket, shear keys, bicones and steel dowels. These solutions have advantages and disadvantages, but most importantly they have limits in their capacity to stabilize the lining at cross passages. With the help of 3D-FE-analyses for an opening of one segmental ring these different solutions are compared taking various ground conditions into account. As a result the capacity of the individual system is determined. Notice is made regarding the applicability of the system as well as the consequences for the design and the verification. INTRODUCTION The design of the lining at a cross passage is among the most difficult tasks when designing TBM-tunnels. At one time the bedding of the lining disappears due to the excavation behind the lining, at another the ring-structure is interrupted when parts of the lining are removed for the opening. The trick is to transfer the loads around the opening into other segments and to areas of the lining which are still supported by the ground. In the rings immediately at the cross passage this creates a distribution of forces within the segments that strongly deviates from that of the regular lining. The design needs to consider the boundary conditions of the respectively chosen solution for stiffening of the opening and its peculiarities in the modeling as well as in the verifications. In the past segments of steel or an internal strutting of steel (DAUB 2013) placed around the later openings were commonly used, see Figure 1. The application of a strutting from the outside to the rings is restricted to such circumstances when for example a connection from a shaft to the tunnel can be made in suitable ground conditions (Ring and Glomp 2012). Though steel segments provide a robust solution, they are expensive due to their laborious manufacture, the high proportion of construction steel required and the time consuming installation in the tunnel (Häfliger 2013). A strutting of steel requires extensive design and verification. The resulting structure usually weighs several tons and must be erected as well as demounted within the confined space of the tunnel, requiring suitable transport and assembly equipment. Accurate knowledge of the gas content of coal seams has always been important, according to the work of W. P. Diamond and J. R. Levine, 1981, but is becoming increasingly important for several reasons: Excessive gas emissions in the mine can create explosion hazards. Depletion of shallower coal reserves is forcing underground operations to greater depths where coal gas content is often greater. Natural gas prices and the need for new energy sources make naturally occurring coal gas a potential resource of economic interest. Information on coal gas content will impact mine designs, mine ventilation system specifications, and the effectiveness of methane control procedures used. Accurate resource assessment is needed for projecting and designing potential gas utilization enterprises. The emphasis upon methane hazards in mining operations, and upon potential methane utilization, has led us to improve upon the procedures used to determine coalbed methane levels.
