"Although conventional coal mine designs are conservative regarding pillar strength, local failures such as roof-falls and pillar bursts still affect mine safety and operations. Previous studies have identified that discontinuous, layered roof materials have some self-supporting capacity. This research is a preliminary step towards understanding these mechanics in coal-measure rocks. Although others have considered broad conceptual models and simplified analogs for mine roof behavior, this study presents a unique numerical model that more completely represents in-situ roof conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to conduct a parametric analysis considering a range of in-situ stress ratios, material properties, and joint networks to determine the parameters controlling the stability of single-entries modeled in two-dimensions. Model results are compared to empirical observations of roof-support effectiveness (ARBS) in the context of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) system. Results such as immediate roof displacement, overall stability, and statistical relationships between model parameters and outcomes are presented herein. Potential practical applications of this line of research include: (1) roof-support optimization for a range of coal-measure rocks, (2) establishment of a relationship between roof stability and pillar stress, and (3) determination of which parameters are most critical to roof stability and therefore require concentrated evaluation.INTRODUCTIONRecent studies on pillar design have suggested that the assumptions utilized in traditional methods such as tributary area theory (TAT) (i.e. overburden has no self-supporting capacity, infinite pillar array, and CHILE material properties) are invalid in many geo-mining conditions (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010; Frith and Reed, 2017). Although TAT is conservative with respect to pillar loading, and mine fatalities have steadily decreased since 1990, roof-falls and pillar bursts still occur and injure hundreds of miners per year (Mark, Pappas, and Barczak, 2011). Even though large-scale global mine failure has not occurred in a US coal mine since 2007, the mechanics of global and local stability as governed by the relationship between geologic parameters, mine geometry, and engineering design are still not well-constrained.Numerical methods are a highly effective tool that can be used to gain further insight into these relationships. When using such an approach, calibration to existing empirical relationships is imperative to ensure that numerical model results are realistic. In this study, we utilize the discrete element method (DEM) approach in Itasca’s Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC v. 6.0) (Itasca, 2010).DEM accounts for explicit separation and contact of individual deformable blocks (Jing, 2003) and captures how discontinuities can affect system behavior. Discontinuous and anisotropic rockmass properties are typical features in coal-measure rock which contain various horizontal (bedding) and sub-vertical (joints) fractures depending on their depositional environment, diagenesis, and historic and current stress states."

U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. INTRODUCTION The solid fossil and nuclear fuels, but especially uranium, are given prominent, indeed leading, roles by energy experts in most long range estimates of world energy futures. Optimistic forecasts are inspired partly by the disproportionately large solid fuels resource base compared to present rates of consumption or to oil and gas resources, and partly by the vision of inexpensive high technology applications. Such a view overlooks the fact that while resource- use disparities and new technologies give allure to the promise of the solid fuels, they do not guarantee cheap solutions to the basic problems of solid fuel uses: viz., their relatively difficult conditions for efficient ignition and control, including the management of environmentally acceptable residuals disposal. Contrary to the varied versions of this optimistic hypothesis, this paper shows that a great many persistent economic and technical problems interfere with such a simple inference. These act as constraints which qualify or dispute much of the national energy policy based on existing modeling of solid fuel requirements and optimistic engineering evaluations. The assumptions and techniques of such exercises are sometimes at fault. As often as not, however, the distortions created in open market fuel com- petition due to misdirected national energy policies themselves are to blame for misdirected efforts. A number of interesting implications result. Among them are the distinct possibility that the low technology applications will dominate, so that more direct coal and less synfuel or nuclear use will occur; that, accordingly, exhaustion rates for uranium will be low, that the most extensive growth of solid fuel through 2000 will be in conventional pulverized coal cumbustors, and that the traded share of the world coal bum will be much larger than predicted. These trends will place much more pressure on oil and gas prices than forecast by most experts. On the way to these findings the paper demonstrates that solid fuel resource adequacy in situ, balanced against the projections of demands as capacity requirements, mean little as conventionally measured by years to exhaustion or potential supply schedules. Indeed, all stock concepts of demand requirements or of fuel re- sources must be tied to the paths of the unit costs and the deliverable prices of all substitute fuels and systems over time. This requires a dynamic analysis of supply and demand, integrated with geological and engineering constraints, to provide insights into the multiple modes of market and product substitution. Market forces rather than technical promise will determine the allocation of the solid fuels. Moreover, the equilibrium paths of individual fuel prices and market shares are not easily simulated by general or network models, and decision makers will continue to rely on the partial, local comparison of alternatives in their choices of fuel systems at any time. A mineral deposit has been discovered and explored sufficiently to establish the presence of ore in ?commercially marketable quantities," This is the point at which exploration ends and development begins, Of course, when the presence of commercially marketable quantities of ore are thought to be present the deposit had to be evaluated before this decision could be reached. If, on the other hand, it was thought that commercially marketable quantities of ore are not present, either more exploration has to be done or the project must be abandoned. It is this decision with which this paper is concerned, more particularly, the influencing factors behind this decision. The final question to be answered is: what profit can my company reasonably expect to make by developing this property and putting it into production? The answer must be expressed as a figure for final profit per ton, money which can be used to pay dividends or to build up cash reserves. Some acquisition cost has probably been paid and the exploration cost incurred at the time of decision, (abandonment or development). In addition to returning these acquisition and exploration costs, the deposit must pay development, mining, milling, capital expense of new plants and equipment, taxes, and various other related costs.

I have entitled my talk "Investment for Progress," implying thereby a spark of friendly competition by private enterprise with such government-inspired foreign aid and investment programs as the Alliance for Progress. While the subject of foreign investment is hardly a new one, the perpetual flux of the political and economic surface of this earth we inhabit makes it forever timely and forever interesting. Especially do tremendous opportunities for international investment constantly present themselves to the mineral industry, and just as often must the industry approach these opportunities with a great deal of investigation and caution. This is not to say that the mineral industry--no less than any other industry--should be unenthusiastic about the foreign scene, but like everyone who proposes to put his money where his hope is, it should consider all the factors and weigh the possible disappointments as well as the rewards.

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

Pyrite samples from twenty-one locations in the North Carolina Slate Belt were analyzed for cobalt, gold, mercury, and nickel by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The geographic distribution of relatively high values of certain trace elements in pyrite suggests that, in addition to gold, cobalt and nickel metallogenetic provinces are possible in the slate belt. Northwest trends of province boundaries may be genetically related to subsurface features rather than to surface geology. Within province boundaries gold and nickel exploration programs should be concentrated in areas containing intermediate to mafic tuffs, while cobalt may be more concentrated in argillites and phyllites.

In some cases, coal barrier pillars must be relied on to withstand high hydrostatic pressures in order to prevent inundation of active mine workings. Such barriers are particularly important in areas, such as parts of West Virginia, where much of the future mining is down dip of mines which have been abandoned, or are currently being worked. Also, where multiple seam mining is conducted, a barrier pillar in one mine may be critical to safety in a mine in a lower seam. MSHA's Coal Mine Safety and Health district offices and the Mine Waste and Geotechnical Engineering Branch of the Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, have recently been involved in the study of barrier pillars in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Oklahoma. In this paper, the factors involved in determining the required width of pillar are discussed, past practices for sizing barriers are reviewed, and related current Federal regulations are examined. In addition, the results of laboratory testing of bottom rock are presented.

The Nevada Moly Operation of Anaconda Minerals Co., (a molybdenum/copper ore body) was initiated in 1978, with a contract to Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc. for construction of a mining and milling facility near Tonopah, NV. Ground was broken on the concentrator portion of the project in August 1979$ with a multi-phased startup of the mill beginning in June 1981. Processing design tonnage of 20 000 t/d (22,000 STPD) was reached in early 1982. Major pitfalls of rapid design and implementation of engineering, construction, and startup are considered. The operation of the concentrator including SAG milling, ball milling, bulk rougher flotation, copper/moly separation, moly regrinding and cleaning, thickening, and product loadout are discussed.

In designing very large excavated slopes which are becoming increasingly common in both mining and civil engineering projects, the most important decision of the engineer is the selection of a slope angle. The purpose of the geotechnical study of the slope is to ensure reasonable stability of the slope in the most economical way. Because the rock mass composing each slope is unique, there are no standard solutions for slope stability analysis. A practical solution is formulated from the basic geologic data, engineering properties of the rock, geometry of the slope, and ground water observations. Stability analysis consists of analyzing the forces causing and resisting slope failure. There are several methods of slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium method evaluates the overall stability of the sliding mass just on the verge of slip, using some or all of the three equations of static equilibrium of a plane problem. The stress-strain relationships of the rock mass are not considered. Method of analysis include the assumption of the shape of the slip surface. Peterson (10) introduced the Swedish method of analysis in 1916, which is based on cylindrical sliding surfaces. Fellenius (4) in 1926 extended this method and introduced the method of slices. This method was refined by Bishop (I) in 1955 and later used by Morgenstern and Price (8) in 1965. In many cases layers of extremely soft strata or strata weakened by neutral stress cause failure to take place by translation along plane of weakness instead of by rotation on a circular surface. In this paper, a slope with a horizontal layer of weak meterial is selected for analysis. This is a usual case for open pit lignite mines where lignite seam may be non-cohesive and 'weaker than the overburden rock or a soft clay layer underlies the seam. It is also a common case of rock fill dams supported on a foundation stratum of clay where the strength of the clay layer is less than that of the rock fill. It is shown that utilizing this method, the location of potential failure surface and the value of the minimum factor of safety can be calculated directly and the trial computations of factors of safety for a number of assumed failure surfaces are not necessary.

he need in the mineral industry to treat increasingly larger tonnages has caused a demand for larger installations. In order to limit the size of these installations, it was necessary to build machines with larger capacities or production output. With this aim in mind, WEMCO Division developed the No. 120 WEMCO-Fagergren Flotation Cell in 1967. These large cells have been compared to conventional smaller cells from the standpoint of metallurgical performance, investment costs, power requirements and maintenance requirements in many plants throughout the world. Figure 1 illustrates the size difference of the No. 120 when compared with the No. 66. All results to date indicate the large No. 120 cell surpasses the smaller machines in all categories.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports state that about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in U.S. coal mines (Tadolini et al., 2006), and rock-related safety remains an issue. The majority of these coal mines have conditions that make corrosion probable in the longer term. Despite this, very little research has been performed to analyze corrosion and its effects on rock anchors in coal mines. To further evaluate the effects of corrosive conditions in coal mines on rock anchors, three different experiments were conducted during an initial Illinois Clean Coal Institute (ICCI)-funded project from 2008-2009. The results of these experiments were further studied, with additional tests, in the extended ICCI-funded project during 2011-2012. The experiments were destructive testing, electrochemical testing (potentiodynamic polarization tests) and open circuit potential (OCP) testing, conducted in order to study corrosion in environments similar to those found in Illinois coal mines with a focus on major rock anchor types typically installed underground. Destructive test results showed highest reduction in peak strength at higher pH and temperature. From the destructive test results, epoxy-coated and galvanized anchors were observed to be better when compared to uncoated. Electrochemical testing was performed to find the corrosion potential and corrosion rates of ASTM A615 steel grades 40, 60 and 75 in four different solutions of varying sulfur content at ambient temperature. The effect of temperature and pH levels on corrosion potential and corrosion rates of steel grades were also evaluated with additional electrochemical testing, where an increase in temperature with all other constant conditions caused a significant increase in the corrosion penetration rate. OCP data indicated higher corrosion potential values (-mV) for rock anchors in wet areas, when compared to those from the dry areas. OCP test results of the rock anchors from the laboratory corrosion chambers were similar to those measured in the sampled coal mines.

The high speed conveyor type self unloading bulk carrier concept has been around for about 70 years. Although the design was developed, refined and steadily improved in the Great Lakes, to date limited numbers of such vessels have emerged in the bulk ocean trades, and these have tended to concentrate within specific mineral trades. For example, North American gypsum companies have embraced conveyor self unloaders to the point where such vessels almost exclusively carry the gypsum requirements of this part of the world. One major aluminum company has developed an impressive fleet capability in self unloaders. Application of other ships tends to be fragmented through several mineral trades. A few years ago a new phenomonen began to appear on the Great Lakes. Whereas it had historically been accepted in that region that self unloaders were effective vessels for the minor bulk trades including limestone, coal, salt, gravel and sand; they had seldom been employed heavily in the big volume iron ore trades. Suddenly, however, the new generation of 60,000 ton Lakers which emerged were all designed as high speed self unloaders. The new vessels intended to trade especially in ore, or alternatively especially in coal, have somewhat different internal features, but the important point is that all are self unloaders.

The Province of Ontario covers an area of some 400 thousand square miles, however the subject I will be talking about today, the licencing of pits and quarries in southern Ontario, refers to about one quarter of this total area but contains better than 93% of the total population of the province or about 8 million people. Southern Ontario had and still has many inviting features to industry. The Great Lakes almost surround us, hydro power has been relatively inexpensive and abundant, but more in line with our topic today are the ample deposits of sand, gravel and limestone, all of which are used directly or indirectly throughout and are the mainstay of our construction industry. I say we are fortunate to have these non-renewable resources in abundance in close proximity to our industrial and metropolitan areas, but like so many of our resources we have taken them for granted for too long. What has happened in our case, as I am sure is common in many of your own similar situations, because of the recent, current popular trend by naturalists and environ- mentalists to preserve our natural heritage at the expense of all else, through parklands and indiscriminate zoning policies, these once abundant reserves have been tremendously eroded.

Coal, petroleum coke and wood are examined from a burner system design viewpoint and from operational experience in kilns, hot gas generators, etc. The burner of today must also handle multi-fuel tasks and allow immediate, painless switching from one fuel to the next as well as the simultaneous burning of two or mope fuels. The paper discusses the principle of burning alternate pulverized fuels as well as the practice both in the United States and around the world.

Automation of mining increases the productivity of labor, thereby reducing the unit cost of labor. Such cost constitutes the largest portion of the direct or variable costs of producing coal. Therefore, any increase in productivity directly reduces variable cost. The large investment in mechanical equipment carries with it the burden of increased fixed charges. As the proportion of fixed cost to the total cost increases, the effects on the cost of production changes are amplified. Therefore, equipment must be fully utilized at all times. Averaged fixed costs rise with any decline in production. Such a situation forces coal companies to seek every means of main¬taining full production. Figure I will reflect the story on the relationship of production to cost.

Nepheline syenite is a light-colored feldspathic rock that is used primarily as an addition to the glass batch. It is also used in ceramics and as an industrial filler. Composed essentially of the soda and potash feldspars and nepheline, nepheline syenite contributes needed alkalis and alumina to the glass composition. And because it contains a higher proportion of these oxides per unit weight, it is a formidable competitor for feldspar in northeastern North America and parts of western Europe. Nepheline-bearing rocks are not uncommon on a world scale, but few are able to be beneficiated to a composition sufficiently low in iron to be used in the making of glass. Nepheline can only form in an environment deficient in silica. Hence free silica, as quartz, is always absent in the primary mineral assemblage. Biotite, hornblende and magnetite are usually present as minor accessory minerals, and zircon, garnet, muscovite, and apatite may be present as trace minerals. Nepheline syenite is produced for glass, ceramics, and filler markets by Unimin Canada Limited at Blue Mountain, in south- eastern Ontario. Unimin acquired the former Indusmin and IMC properties from Falconbridge Ltd. in 1990. Elkem Nefelin AIS commenced production of similar products from Stjernoy Island in northern Norway in 1961. Unimin acquired this company in 1992. Nepheline has also been a byproduct of apatite mining on the Kola Peninsula for many years, and in 1951 the production of alumina from nepheline was commenced in a plant near St. Petersburg (Leningrad). There are now four plants in the Russian Republic, two smaller ones based on nepheline tailings from apatite mining and two larger and more recent plants in central Siberia using other nepheline resources. All four of these plants are integrated complexes that produce alumina for the subsequent production of aluminum metal, sodium and potassium carbonates, and portland cement. Roofing granules are produced by the 3M Company from a nepheline rock in Arkansas. In 1980 and 1989, trial shipments of nepheline syenite were recorded from new sources in Brazil and western Turkey respectively. Recent interest is also recorded for deposits in China, Saudi Arabia, and British Columbia.
