Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. "Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have advocated the use of instrumentation in underground mine ground control studies to aid in understanding failure mechanisms and to calibrate numerical models. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce accidents and fatalities in underground mines resulting from inadequate design of mining layout or supports. A recent examination of some results of stress change measurement raised some questions about the validity of elastic solutions in ground, such as coal. Particularly under deep cover as is prevalent in the western United States, the coal around a borehole would likely have yielded so that post-yield behavior would govern the response of the instrument.A numerical experiment was conducted by NIOSH researchers using the FLAC software (Itasca Consulting Group, 2016) to investigate the response of the borehole pressure cell (BPC) and the biaxial stressmeter to varying degrees of plastic behavior. The pre-encapsulated BPC cell pressure exhibits increasing departure from the elastic case with decreasing post-peak-strength slope of the stress-strain curve. On the other hand, because the BSM usually provides much more confinement to the surrounding rock than does the BPC, the measurements obtained from the BSM do not depart significantly from the changes in secondary principal stresses and directions as calculated by the elastic solution.INTRODUCTIONSeveral years ago, Larson et al. (2000) described several instruments that NIOSH had used in underground field studies and how to monitor them with dataloggers. This information is still relevant because of the need to understand how excavation affects the stability of mines and thus, the safety of mining personnel. One class of instruments described in that paper includes those instruments that measure change in rock stress. Although several such instruments might be used to measure stress change, the focus of this paper is on two instruments with which NIOSH has had more recent experience—the borehole pressure cell (BPC) (Geokon, 2018a; RST Instruments, 2018) and the biaxial stressmeter (BSM) (Geokon, 2018b). Other instruments, such as the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell (HICell) (Earth Sciences, 2019; Worotnicki and Walton, 1976) may be included in future studies.Early studies in the development of the BPC were those of Panek and Stock (USBM, 1964), Sellers (1970), Lu (1984), and Babcock (1986). Babcock’s work is particularly useful, but his setting and testing range was far below what we experienced in the NIOSH study, and it was Babcock’s data reduction scheme from his laboratory experiments that was used to calculate stress change in the NIOSH study (NIOSH, 2019a)."

The significant growth of the world population and its demand for an increasing standard of living leaves no other choice than continuously augmenting industrial production and making available steadily greater quantities of raw materials at still better qualities. Therefore, any raw material has to be utilized to the greatest possible extent and processed at optimum economy on large mechanical equipment. The layout of processing facilities of large throughput rates can be based on multiple or single lines. The latter enables the application of large machines of optimum size. Proven equipment for homogenizing, classifying, separating superfine material, sorting and dewatering are-now available in optimum sizes. By the use of these large machines operating cost of pit coal preparation plant can be significantly lowered by reducing the specific requirements regarding space, capital investment, energy, operation and maintenance.

The Esmeralda mine is located about three miles west of the town of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico, and about 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area is serviced by the Interamerican Highway and a branch line of the National Railways of Mexico. The Parral district is quite typical of the semidesert of Northern Mexico, lying near the western margin of the Chihuahua basin and range province known in Mexico as the ?Mesa Central? In the immediate mine area, low rounded hills and rolling plans slope toward the Parral River. Surface elevation at the mine is 5,800 feet. The Esmeralda vein outcrops strongly, but was too low grade to be of interest to the Spaniards, The first claims were staked in 1897 and limited exploration work to a depth of 550 feet was carried out prior to 1912, at which time work was suspended. The Eagle-Picher Company acquired the property in 1944 and by surface diamond drilling outlined an orebody to a depth of 800 feet, Minas de Iguala, S. A, de C.V., one of Eagle-Picher?s totally owned subsidiary companies in Mexico, then unwatered the old workings, developed the mine, installed a modern differential flotation plant and started production lage in 1948. To the present, more than two and ahalf million tons of ore have been mined and milled producing lead and zinc concentrates.

The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

The Mesquite gold deposit is a recent discovery of Gold Fields Mining Corporation lying 65 kilo- meters northeast of El Centro in Imperial County, California (Figure 1). The deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the Chocolate Mountains and is a bulk-minable, low grade "disseminated" orebody. Although the host rocks of the deposit are part of a regional high-grade metamorphic terrane, abundant brittle fractures, brecciation, and open-space vein fillings indicate that Mesquite mineralization is epithermal. Faulting which postdates the hydrothermal activity has complicated the original geometry of the orebody. Alluvium effectively hides most surface expression of the mineralization, but open-pit mining is now revealing the details of Mesquite geology.

This paper develops the procedure for simulating the special locked-cycle Work Index laboratory test using the kinetic parameters obtained by conducting standard size-mass balance (SMB) grinding tests and presents the results for three materials - quartz, a taconite iron ore and a bituminous coal. It was found that the WI could be determined by simulation; however, if a material breaks abnormally, a full description of its abnormal breakage is necessary. It was also found that the sensitivity of the WI test procedure to the sieving process and the estimating of the 80% passing size of the sieve undersize is sufficient to question the practice of quoting a WI to two or more decimal places. Finally, if a material grinds abnormally in the Work Index mill, then the WI test should not be conducted.

Franklin Industrial Minerals operates several mines/quarries, including two room and pillar underground mines. Both of these mines are operated as multiple level room and pillar including heading and bench operations on one or both of the levels. This paper focuses on Franklin’s Crab Orchard, Tennessee mine, which produces both high purity chemical grade limestone and crushed stone for construction applications. The high purity chemical specifications for the chemical grade limestone and filler/extender applications are inconsistent with the non-chemical rock being produced to supply the crushed stone market. As a consequence Franklin has developed a unique mine plan and operation to maintain both product balance and a safe and stable working environment.

Electrochemical properties of silicate minerals govern their behavior in processes such as flocculation and enhanced oil recovery that can occur at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these properties as a function of temperature can be helpful in developing an under- standing of the role of these interfacial properties at non-ambient temperatures. Zeta potential of Sodium Kaolinite and quartz has been determined as a function of pH and temperature in this work. Both systems exhibited markedly different behavior at higher temperatures and also exhibited significant hysteresis. Results are examined in terms of possible dissolution of the minerals and surface reactions at different temperatures.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

Inspite of the growing demands worldwide, thermal coal must compete in the market both in price and quality. The design and performance efficiency of coal preparation plants is thus crucial to the survival and profitability of a coal industry. While the coal recovery influences the cost of production, the quality produced by a preparation plant determines the selling price. Several coal preparation plant simulation models have been developed in recent years to help Improve the performance of coal preparation plants. A research project was recently conducted at Southern Illinois University to evaluate the practical applicability of such a model. The results of this study are presented and discussed.

Massey Coal Company's Western Division, headed by Vice President, Gregory H. Hoyl. I also have a very close friend and fraternity brother who works and lives in Denver so I could talk on and on about this area and our western coal properties, but it's Massey's coal terminal business I'm to focus in on today, and that's a horse of a different color. Subsidence measurement methods, applied over the thick and steep seam mining in the Rocky Mountains Region of Western Canada are described. The studies to date indicate that two new subsidence monitoring techniques appear to be the most suited methods for our conditions. The computerized telemetry and aerial photogrammetry systems are being tested for the reliability of the systems during the winter months within the network of laser surveying over the workings of the new hydraulic mine. The site particulars and the mining method of the concerned area have been described briefly. The observation over the old hydraulic mine indicate that panels adjacent to each other do not obey identical subsidence phenomenon.

A technique was devised by the Bureau of Nines to recover coarse (plus 1.7 m) North Carolina phosphate now discarded as waste. Concentration utilizes the difference in particle sphericity between the relatively flat calcite and the rounded phosphate pebbles. Sizing, treatment in a continuous hydraulic classification system, and grinding upgraded a 17.0-pct-P205 reject to 24.5 pct P205 with a phosphate recovery of 63 pct.

On behalf of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to your Institute for presenting us with this opportunity to outline the regulatory control programme as it relates to the mining industry in the Province of Ontario. In Canada, and particularly in Ontario, we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Fresh water in the form of lakes and rivers covers nearly 17 per cent of the area of the Province. (Total area of the Province of Ontario is 412,582 square miles.) The mining industry, which had its beginning in the early 1800's with a small iron ore plant, has progressed with the major discoveries of nickel and copper in 1883, silver in 1903, gold in 1908, iron in 1939 and uranium in 1953, to the point where, in 1966, almost one billion dollars in mineral wealth was mined in Ontario. Water, in spite of its great abundance and with due respects that it may become a natural resource worthy of export in the foreseeable future, has become increasingly precious in Ontario, particularly in the more urban areas in the southern part of the Province.

Two large 34 ½ foot diameter mills have seen seven years of continuous operation before massive fracturing occurred on one of the trunnion cones. These fractures were discovered when liner changes were made. Four modes of failure were identified, three of the modes combining to cause a large circumferential tear in the 4-inch cone plate. A theoretical account is made of the modes of fracture and comparison made with field results. New material was used to repair the fractured cone, and the complete repair took ten weeks. The repair was monitored and lasted twenty-six weeks before the newly designed structure was available.

The oil shales in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado occur in the Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation. The oil shales were deposited in a unique environment of deposition which caused the mineral nahcolite (NaHC03) to be precipitated within the oil shales. Post-depositional tectonics resulted in extensive fracturing of the Middle Zone of the Parachute Creek member, and to a lesser degree portions of the Lower Zone, which allowed percolating ground waters to dissolve the nahcolite in the fractured portion of the oil shale beds which is characterized by broken porous oil shale, certain beds of which have collapsed into rubble and debris. The extent and porosity of the Leach Zone aquifer is dependent upon the percentage of kerogen and nahcolite originally deposited in the oil shale. Any oil shale development program in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado will need to be preceeded by an extensive study of the Leach Zone in order to determine the effects on a mining program.

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.
