Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. The gold is hosted by discrete quartz veins. While it is true that limited discoveries were made at Hemlo more than 30 years ago, and this style of mineralization is present elsewhere, recent

In German hardcoal mining approximately 1 or 2 cases of spontaneous combustion are recorded per 10 million tonnes of saleable output. In approximately every 20th spontaneous combustion case, CH, is ignited. By the example of a fire caused by spontaneous combustion on Friedrich Heinrich colliery, an overview on the measures taken for firefighting and explosion prevention is given. These measures comprise (in sequential order) - early fire detection by CO-monitoring, - gob-sealing measures against ventilation air leaks, - full-space inertization of the coalface subsequent to a CH,- deflagration, - installation of a target inertization of the caved-in gob under the protection of the full-space inertization, - re-opening of the fire zone and reestablishment of the ventilation-air current, - completion of the salvaging work with continued target inertization of the caved-in gob and further sealing measures (monolithic packing), - sealing of the coalface after salvaging. The measures described allowed gain of control of a safety- critical (because close to the face) gob fire caused by spontaneous combustion, in spite of a CH, deflagration, within few days only, and salvaging of equipment from that coalface and start-up of the follow-up coal-face on schedule. The measures taken as well as the experiences gained allow deduction of general safety criteria for fighiing of gobfires caused by spontaneous combustion, and for controlling the explosion risk. e.g. - warning and alert thresholds for early detection of fires, - criteria for spotting of the zone of fire, - rules for tightening caved-in gobs, - thresholds for the retreat of firefighting crews from the vicinity of the zone of fire, and for starting ineiization, - considerations for positioning of and strength requirements for stoppings with/without inertization, - flow-by-volume adjustment of inertization, - safety rules for work with respiratory apparatus in the inertized zone, - safety rules for the re-opening of zones of fire. The considerations end up in the conclusions that the duration in terms of months of the classic cycles of sealing, waiting, and reopening can nowadays be reduced to a few days only by purposeful combination of full-space inertization and locally confined tar- get inertization of the gob area. The earlier high risks incured by the mine resuce squads en- trusted with sealing of zones of mine fires under explosion hazards can be reduced by the method described, provided the safety regulations are conformed with. In this way, intertizing contributes substantially to reduction of down-time caused by mine fires, to preservation of recoverable parts of the deposit, and to improved safety of the fire-fighting crews.

"With the final goal of ultrasonic application to ion exchange in a resin-in-pulp (RIP) system, the feasibility of an indirect ultrasonic application with a submersed ultrasonic probe was investigated first for the enhancement of ion exchange in the following resin-in-solution (RIS) system: Lewatit MonoPlus MP 600XL in an artificial solution with 106 ppm uranium. Ultrasonic radiation enhanced the ion exchange efficiency without mechanical degradation of resin. For 3.6 g/L of resin, the enhancement was 79 percent after 10 min of ion exchange and it gradually decreased to 11 percent at 60 min. In addition, a preliminary test of the mechanical stability of the resin in the RIP system showed little mechanical fracture of the resin due to ultrasound, which indicates that indirect ultrasonic application by a submersed ultrasonic probe is applicable for RIP systems. IntroductionIn uranium ore processing, the ion exchange process has been used on a commercial scale for preconcentration and purification (Gonzalez-Luque and Streat, 1984). The ion exchange process is divided into two processes: (1) a resin-in-column process with the uranium-bearing solutions passed through columns containing resins and (2) a resin-in-pulp (RIP) process with the leached ore pulp exposed to resins. The latter does not require the separation process of leach liquor and ore solids, which reduces process costs. This process, which has been developed commercially since 1955, has a certain drawback. The adsorption rate and efficiency in the RIP process are relatively low, so numerous contacts between resins and leached ore pulp are needed, which adds to the cost (Merritt, 1971). It is necessary to study methods to reduce process costs.Ultrasound can intensify mass transfer, increase the rate of chemical reactions, and change reaction pathways (Thompson and Doraiswamy, 1999; Luque de Castro and Priego-Capotem, 2007; Adewuyi, 2001; Luque-Garcia and Luque de Castro, 2003). It has great potential in chemistry and is especially considered to be a promising method for enhancing mass-transfer-limited processes, such as ion exchange. Enterzari and Tahmasbi (2009) reported the effect of ultrasound on water softening by ion exchange. Band et al. (1997) proposed a modulated ultrasound application to water desalination with ion-exchange hollow fibers. These reports revealed that ion exchange kinetics could be enhanced by the application of ultrasound. As for hydrometallurgy, Feng and Aldrich (2000) reported that the elution of an ion exchange resin was enhanced by the use of ultrasonication."

"The development of mining safety and health management as a recognized profession has been long in coming. Over the last 150 years, the mining industry has evolved from having individuals randomly involved in safety related work with no specific responsibilities or qualifications, on to the designation of individuals responsible for safety, regardless of knowledge, qualifications and experience and finally to today’s expectation that virtually every mine and mining company has designated individuals operating as safety and health professionals. Further, with the complexity, risk potential and moral expectations surrounding safety, people who address mine safety and health management are justifiably expected to function in a professional capacity including:1. Rendering a specialized service based on advanced knowledge and skill.2. Maintaining a high degree of obligation to those most affected by mine safety outcomes.3. Bound by an ethical code in working with the public, employers and miners.4. Maintaining confidentiality with an employer or client. This historical change parallels thedevelopment of other professions, e.g., attorneys, engineers, physicians, etc., with the exception that those professions require a license granted by a governmental agency, which is justified on the basis of public protection, in order to practice. Likewise, decisions made by today’s mine safety and health professionals, both directly and in association with other managers, clearly have a significant impact on the life and welfare of miners throughout the world.CertificationIn light of this, there is growing need to improve standards of competency and professionalism for those who work in mine safety and health management. An effective mechanism to accomplish this, other than licensure, is the use of accredited professional certification programs. There are many professional certification programs for safety and health throughout the world (Hale & Harvey, 2012). However, there is only one certification specific to mining —the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP). The International Academy of Mine Safety and Health (ISMSH-SME) was formed with the purpose of developing and managing mining safety and health certification programs for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). In 2016, following the discontinuation of the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals (ISMSP), which developed the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) credential in the 1990s, the IAMSH-SME began the process of updating and relaunching the CMSP program. Among other work required to gain third-party accreditation both domestically and internationally, the IAMSH-SME has developed a new Body of Knowledge associated with mine safety and health management (Table 1)."

"NIOSH has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the US mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room which had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration/pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. Eighty-seven percent of submicron particles were reduced by the system at static conditions, meaning that greater than eighty-seven percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced. The particle size distribution for respirable dust particles are greater than for submicron particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced which is an important component for an effective system and minimizes particles (e.g. dust) from entering into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, which is greater than the airflow suggested by ASHRAE for acceptable indoor air quality. INTRODUCTION Chronic overexposure to respirable silica dust (particle diameter < 10 microns) leads to a progressive lung disease known as silicosis. Workers who develop silicosis have an increased incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary disorders. In June 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (1) found sufficient evidence to declare that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz and cristobalite is carcinogenic. Mining is one of the leading industries for occupational exposure to silica dust (2-7). Control rooms located in dusty areas in some mines are of particular concern (8). Many mineral processing operations utilize operator’s compartments and/or control rooms to house workers who are performing particular job functions. Most industrial processing mills have rooms where a worker looks out over the facility and has direct control over the product flow throughout the entire building. In addition, primary crusher operators are often located in a compartment from which they are able to view the primary crushing function. Their job is to control when trucks dump into the primary jaw crusher and the rate of feed of the ore from the hopper into the crusher. Many of these control rooms and operator booths do not have filtration systems capable of cleaning air entering the control room or booth, which can result in elevated concentrations of dust in the room or booth. To reduce the dust concentrations in these rooms, it would make sense to clean the entering air with filtration/pressurization units similar to those proven to provide a clean environment in enclosed cabs."

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn&apos;t restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam&apos;s life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor&apos;s. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. It is well known that surface moisture and fine content have a strong influence on coal handle- ability. It is known as well that these two criteria are not sufficient to classify coals. It seems that certain types of coals are intrinsically difficult to handle, the reason being still not well understood. For these coals, moisture and fine content are aggravating factors and have to be strictly controlled in order to avoid handling problems (sticking, arching in hoppers.. .). CERCHAR has undertaken research aimed at identifying the role of intrinsic characteristics of coal with regard to handling properties. Two of them have been identified as particularly relevant : the clay content and the "colloidal particle" content. Two simple tests commonly used for soils characterisation, but never used so far for coal, have been applied to characterise a wide range of coals. The derived classification has been compared with an empirical classification based on dry screening tests. DRY SCREENING EXPERIMENTS Dry screening at a relatively low screen aperture (e.g. 6 mm) may be considered as a good tool for assessing the handleability of wet fine coals. Difficult to handle coals always lead to rapid plugging of the screen whilst easy to handle coals can be screened without difficulties. A wide range of coals has been selected with various ash, moisture and fine content. Their characteristics are given in table 1. The experimental set-up consists of a 2 t.p.h vibrating screen equipped with two automatic re- cording balances collecting respectively oversize and undersize material. Provided that the feeding rate is accurately controlled, good reproducibility in the percentage passing as a function of time is obtained. Figure 1 gives examples of different types of relations that were obtained. - LMC coal exhibits a behaviour that is characteristic of easy to handle coals : % passing remains constant in the course of the screening operation. - B coal behaves slightly differently. One observe first a rapid decrease in the flow passing through the screen and then a stabilization. Hand- ling properties can be considered as intermediately - The curve relative to LHB coal is characteristic of a very difficult to handle coal that blinds the screen almost immediately. It is necessary to point out the fact that the classification derived from screening experiments is a global one, including not only intrinsic factors but also external factors such as fines and moisture content. Substantial volumes of cyanide are consumed in precious metals mining due to the purposeful destruction of base metal cyanide complexes and free cyanide to meet surface discharge regulations. This destruction of cyanide resource runs counter to the prevailing social ethic of resource conservation wherein cyanide recovery-and-reuse is considered a more socially responsible cyanide use pattern than systematic cyanide destruction. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed membrane based methods for the recovery of cyanide from barren solution as a means to reduce cyanide waste. The HWPT Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS™) system uses state-of-the-art spiral wound membrane elements that are engineered specifically for the treatment of high pH cyanide process solutions. The membranes fully reject WAD CN, SAD CN and most minor metals, and partially reject SCN, Free CN and precious metal cyanide from a high clarity barren solution feed to a small volume EMS™ “concentrate” stream. The EMS™ “concentrate” stream is returned to the process. The large percentage of the EMS™ process feed exits the system as cyanide lean EMS™ “permeate.” The EMS™ permeate, after residual cyanide destruction, polishing, and pH adjustment, is, thereafter, typically suitable for discharge. Separately, the HWPT EMS™-PLS method of cyanide recycling is an internal plant cyanide recovery step that removes base metal cyanides from a pregnant leach solution to a small volume EMSTM concentrate stream. The concentrate stream is then typically processed further for the recovery of metals and recovery-recycling of cyanide. The method makes it economically practical to recover gold from Merrill-Crowe or car-bon plant “fouling” solutions, e.g., those with greater than 400 ppm Cu, as might result from the use of the EMS™ method wherein EMS™ concentrate is constantly thrown back into the mine leach solution pool as part of the free cyanide recycle process, or as might result from the single-pass leach treatment of high copper content ores or concentrates. The EMS™ cyanide recovery method for barren solution treatment is shown to be “economic” for the treatment of clear solutions at the approximately 200 ppm total cyanide level (CNT), and for slurries at the approximately 400 ppm total cyanide level, where economic is defined as a 2 year EMS™ plant payback. The EMS™ plant payback calculation includes the beneficial monetary impacts of gold and free cyanide recycling and the avoided operating cost of cyanide destruction.• The cyanide recovery plant payback period is reduced further when the avoided capital costs for cyanide destruction (EMS™ permeate “clear solution CN destruction polish” only required) and/or metals precipitation are considered.

Discussion by G.E. Agar In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to he done, wet or dry or a combination? On top of that uncertainty the author refers to a simplified "Anaconda" test. No reference is provided for this procedure and in the text the results of the technique are referred to "Denver wet ball mill" results and say nothing of Anaconda results. Reply by H. Nematollahi I think that the method proposed to determine the Bond Work Index in this paper is clearly described in the paper as follows: •The method of grinding is dry (Ref. paragraph I, subject Method description); •The size of ball mill, the quantity and size of balls are noted (Ref. paragraph 1, subject Test equipment); and The test procedure is described in detail (Ref. paragraphs 1, 2 and 3, subject Test procedure). As it is noted in the paper, the test has been worked out under the same condition as Standard Bond Test with ball mill, so dry (screening should be dry also), but using a smaller ball mill and a smaller quantity of sample. Considering the above mentioned points, I believe that the method has been fully and clearly described and it ought to be repeatable as well. The Anaconda test is a method for determination of Work Index and could be done by any types of laboratory wet ball mill (Yan, R.F., et al., cf. References). I applied this method using a laboratory Denver ball mill (Ref. paragraph I subject Determining the Bond Work Index). So the results referred to Denver wet ball mill can be equated the same as Anaconda method.

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. J. Dasher Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title. reply by M. G. Ayat The first and the last criticism of this paper is that the work is not pertinent to the title. Anybody who reads this article will immediately realize that the work describes the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes in coal slurry pipes and pumps. If this is so, why not title the work "Degradation process in coal slurry pipelines"? What could be more pertinent to this title than the investigation concerning the degradation phenomenon of coal particles in a pipe carrying a coal slurry? Mr. Dasher complains that he does not understand the meaning of the term "increasingly smaller size." The first sentence of this article defines the degradation process as "the breakage of coal particles to increasingly finer sizes." The term "increasingly finer sizes" here means successive breakage of a fine particle to finer and finer sizes. According to Hukki (Hukki, 1975), the probability of breakage is high for large particles and rapidly diminished for fine sizes. We apologize for being brief about some of these definitions. The degradation process, breakage of particles to increasingly finer sizes, is so widespread in the mineral industry that we did not feel it necessary to bore the reader with lengthy definitions of some simple terms. Mr. Dasher states that the coals examined and their original size consist are unidentified. Please look at Table I and Table 2 in the paper again where you will find the original size consist of the coals examined and their full specifications. We only named the coals A, B, C, D, and E to avoid identifying the coal seams that were more susceptible to degradation. Not identifying the name of the wet screening device used in this work has also been criticized. In our opinion, wet screening operation is such a routine and standard procedure that naming the device by which the screening is performed would serve no purpose but to promote a sales approach. This was not our intention. We did not conclude that the correlation between the degradation process and Hardgrove Grindability Index is hard to establish as Mr. Dasher writes in his letter. We stated, not concluded, that "It is reasonable to assume that some relationship between the extent of degradation and its physical properties, such as Hardgrove Grindability Index, does exist. However, any definite correlation is difficult to establish." This statement is based on other researchers work, which are clearly referenced in the article. The conclusions of this paper were based solely on the findings of the experimental work. As for the theory of comminution that Mr. Dasher asks, we would like to refer him to some basic comminution books and articles where various theories are clearly described. For example, Hukki (Hukki, R.T.,"The Principles of Comminution; An Analytical Summary," Eng. Min. 176, 106, 1975) suggests that the relationship between energy and particle size is a composite form of three laws (Bond&apos;s law, Kick&apos;s law, and Rittinger&apos;s law). A comprehensive analysis of coal breakage processes is also performed by Broadbent and Callcott (S.R. Broadbent, and T.G. Callcott, "Coal Breakage Processes, I. - A New Analysis of Coal Breakage Processes;" and "Coal Breakage Processes, II. - A Matrix Representation of Breakage," Journal of the Institute of Fuel, pp. 524-539, December 1956). These and many other relevant publications explain the relationship between the particle size and energy much better that what can be said in this short reply. We will, however, agree with Mr. Dasher on one particular point. We, too, believe that if the investigation concerning the degradation process in coal slurry pipeline were to be pursued further, one could choose to determine one or more of the variables available in the process, such as discharge pressure, power consumption, percent solid, pipe diameter, etc.

"The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway&apos;s company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner&apos;s Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km&apos;/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company&apos;s initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner&apos;s Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear&apos;s Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner&apos;s Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner&apos;s Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner&apos;s Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner&apos;s Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company&apos;s common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner&apos;s Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. "Diesel particulate Matter (DPM) is a byproduct of fuel combustion in diesel engines. It is classified as a carcinogen, with associated respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. The composition, size, and concentration of DPM is dependent on factors such as engine type, loading and fuel composition. Though a number of DPM abatement and control strategies currently exist, particularly in underground mining environments, occupational exposures remain a serious health concern. As a novel abatement approach, DPM scavenging by fine water or “fog” droplets has been proposed and a laboratory set-up has been built to test the efficacy on engine exhaust. Here, we describe a series of tests that varied engine load, system flow rate and fog drop number density. While none of these factors had overwhelming effects on the results within the ranges tested, the improvement in DPM mass removal attributed to the fog treatment was about 45% on average in comparison to no treatment. INTRODUCTION Diesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy1. More recently, however, adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. Many of these risks are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components1–3. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are a mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash3. The OC fraction of DPM results from unburned fuel and lube oil, whereas EC or soot is formed during the combustion of locally rich regions within the fuel. DPM is classified as a carcinogen6,7 and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustion-related fine particulate and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases8,9. Diesel engines operate in relative fuel rich/oxygen lean conditions and are characterized by relatively high emissions of particulate as compared to spark-ignition engines2,3,10. Typically, these emissions range from 107 – 109 particles/cc and cover two primary size ranges: the nuclei mode where particles have diameters less than about <50 nm, and the accumulation mode where diameters are from about 50-10,000 nm. Most OC resides in the nuclei mode as semi-volatile compounds, while most EC is in the accumulation mode3. The physical and chemical properties of DPM vary with the type of engine, fuel (e.g., petro- vs. bio-diesel) and operating conditions such as loading (i.e., a function of torque and rotational speed)2,3,9,11,12. Loading is a particularly important factor with respect to DPM toxicity9,13,14, and on the effectiveness of after-treatment technologies2,3,15. Engine load alone can affect the EC/OC ratio, and the size distribution and number density of DPM. For diesel engines, the load is roughly proportional to the equivalence ratio3, defined as the actual fuel/air ratio over the stoichiometric fuel/air ratio for complete combustion. Light loads generally favor the formation of OC and small particles. As load is increased the volatiles are oxidized leading to larger soot particles (i.e., EC), but lower total number density of DPM. With further loading, the formation of soot offsets the decrease in volatiles, resulting in increased DPM mean size and number density3."

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. Nodular-graphite cast iron (GGG) is a material similar to steel, and one which exhibits excellent properties, in particular for components exposed to pressure. GGG cast iron has been used in many cases when sinking mine shafts with conventional tubbing. With linings made of cast iron tubbings (the backfill concrete is not integrated into the calculations, and merely serves as bedding) the properties of the cast iron can be made full use of, provided the tubbing is made to the appropriate cross-section. Calculations have shown that better static values can be arrived at when using cross-sections other than those of tubbings made to conventional German standard. The cross-sectional design of the new types of shaft lining made from GGG is to be developed on these lines irrespective of the cast iron structure being only stressed component or its restistance function being combined with the one of concrete. GGG 50 is used for the first time to make the reinforcing inner liner of a main shaft currently sunk in Germany. The physical properties of nodular-graphite cast iron, strength and deformability, suggest that, in the future, its application will not be restricted to shaft support but also in tunneling. New moulding techniques with better three-dimensional modelling resulted in new tubbing designs as installed e.g. for the Hannover underground at present. Shield-driven tunnels have to withstand earth and water pressure, apart from axial machine loads. In this field time is money as well. Therefore easy handling and quick installation are necessary for successful, use. Last but not least, safety is of first-order importance for work in shaft sinking and tunneling. Cast iron lining systems, accordingly, are adequate systems, in particular for excavations underneath water for transport systems and for goods and passengers.

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from US coal mines have been collected and tested. 70 The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal which is a good indicator for potential of self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential of coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques and adiabatic tests are reasonably consistent with each other. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal are easier to be activated with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will has a higher potential of self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with low potential of self-ignition has low self-heating rate, high activation energy and high minimum self-heating temperature.

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.
