The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued Program Information Bulletin P09-03in April of 2008, providing formal guidance on using programs that model the redistribution of stress during underground mining of coal. A key part of this guidance is visual observation and mapping of ground conditions. If a correlation between ground conditions and model output can be established, the model is considered to be verified, and can be used to guide mine design in similar ground. A simple scale is recommended for ranking observed roof, rib, and floor conditions. This paper discusses optimization and implementation of a ground condition rating scheme in the gateroads of a deep underground longwall coal mine. Roughly 80% of each gateroad length deteriorated in a fairly uniform manner. However, this manner varied between gateroads, as did pillar size. The implementation of a ground condition mapping program, similar to that recommended in PIB 09-03, was successful in characterizing the ground response to mining in gateroads of a longwall coal mine.

Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

The industrial coal processing trend toward greater fines production, due to mining techniques and customer requirements for reduced ash and sulphur content in the fine coal product, is the basis for ongoing efforts to improve the performance of the flotation machine. WCO has successfully adapted the principles of the beds Column to a full size machine prototype. Recent plant evaluation tests confirmed the initial promise of this concept by achieving a considerably lower ash product while maintaining the combustible recovery level of conventional flotation machinery. The paper will include a review of the fundamental principles of the beds Column concept, together with a summary of the WEMCO R&D Program from concept evaluation and laboratory testing, through pilot, to full size machine tests. The performance of the WEMCO/Leeds flotation column will be compared to conventional flotation concepts using a flotation "kinetics" approach, which quantifies the floatable and non-floatable specie recovery performance using the Klimpel model as the basis for analysis. The variety of distinct features unique to this concept include a series of barrier rods which are used to advantage, often together with countercurrent reflux water flow, to achieve a significant improvement in product grade. The hydrodynamics associated with the mechanics of "gangue stripping" from the rising "air bubble-floatable specie" matrix will be briefly reviewed.

Adaptations and redesign of the existing already very successful and proven road milling machine concept and technical innovations such as an optimized, specifically for mining application developed cutting drum, cutting housing design and cutting tools, high manoeuvrability achieved via a tight turning radius, a three disk clutch system and a cutting drum drive that allows for the acceptance of higher loads, a complete reinforcement of the chassis to withstand higher vibrations and torque, the installation of increased engine power via a modern drive unit, a specifically for mining/construction applications developed operator’s platform and finally a redesigned air intake system and the adaptation of the levelling system resulted in far more cost effective and advantageous capabilities of Wirtgen Surface Miner in soft to medium hard mining and construction applications. As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

"Northwestern Pacific submarine seamounts are believed to be future marine mining areas of ferromanganese crusts, which contain hi-tech industrial metals, such as Co, Ni, Te, Ti, Pt, and REEs. The Takuyo No. 5 seamount is a member of the Cretaceous super-plume seamounts in the north Pacific, located within a Japanese EEZ (100 nm from the Minami- Torishima Is. or Marcus Is.), and only 300 nm away from the Japan’s Licensed area for exploration of Co-rich ferromanganese crusts under the ISA. This is an on-going program supported by independent academic communities but not a state-run program or managed by private funding.We have observed, sampled, measured, and analyzed the occurrences, distribution, physical properties, and microbiological environments at a selected flat topped seamount named Takuyo No.5 as a model area for scientific study of ferromanganese crusts within the Japanese EEZ. We then characterized crust structures, composition, age, and growth history, resulting in an understanding of the overall nature and distribution of these deposits from wide range of areas, water depths and geological environments. The study started with a ROV (Hyper-Dolphin 3K of JAMSTEC) exploration jointly with universities and national institutions (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal Exploration Corporation, and Geological Survey of Japan) in 2009 using marine geology vessels, remotely-operated vehicle, an oceanbottom drill machine, deep-tow TV camera, as well as conventional dredges and corers. We have been studying the topography, geology, nature of the bottom material of the seamounts using delicate sampling devices and measurement tools, and characterized the distribution patterns of the metal-rich ferromanganese deposits from chemical, mineralogical, and microbiological points of view."

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million tom of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization - "scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who bum coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. This paper highlights some of these limitations and provides selection criteria for a new organic coating developed for one such difficult application, DSI?s Omega BoltPTM Pwhich is an expandable ground support. "Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

CEET, an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool, was jointly developed by MinnovEX Technologies Inc. and 13 major mining companies for the purpose of designing and predicting the performance of grinding circuits. It fundamentally differs from other methods by using as its’ data set a geostatistically significant population of hardness data distributed across the mine block model. Historically the characterization of an orebody for the purpose of either designing a grinding circuit or predicting the performance of an existing circuit has been done with a relatively limited number of discrete samples. In addition to power selection, shell sizing, and costing for multiple circuit options, CEET also outputs tons per hour, P80, and operating cost on every mining block for subsequent integration back into the block model. This paper will provide an overview of what CEET is and how it works.

Various methods have been developed through US Bureau of Mines research to remove gas in advance of, during, and subsequent to mining. These include drilling horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening, and vertical boreholes stimulated for drainage in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. Techniques and equipment now exist that allow drilling a borehole at any angle to the vertical, and even along an arc. Stimulation treatments have also been developed that provide for increased gas production capability. This paper describes the long-term production history of five select gas drainage installations. The Bureau of Mines conducted or participated in four studies. The remaining study was conducted by the Equitable Gas Co. Principles of storage, release, and migration of coal bed gases The amount of gas contained within any given area of a coalbed depends on the coal's inherent storage capacity and the physical conditions of the coalbed. The gas storage capacity of coal is primarily a function of rank. As such, it cannot be affected by the presence of drainage holes (Kim, 1977). Certain physical conditions of the coalbed can, however, be changed that will affect the release and migration of gas. By pumping water out of the coalbed through the vertical boreholes, two important changes occur - pressure is reduced and water saturation is lowered. Reducing reservoir pressure releases gas as the coalbed adjusts and equilibrates gas to the change. Increasingly large amounts of gas are released for each incremental decrease in pressure. Lowering the water saturation level raises the permeability of the coalbed to gas and allows the gas to more readily migrate to the wellbore (Kisse and Edwards, 1975). For horizontal boreholes completed near mine openings, the coalbed has already undergone a pressure or water saturation reduction phase. This condition thus allows such boreholes to be highly productive with minimal water production. Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard rock and mixed face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM over fifty years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates higher and cutter costs lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. This paper describes recent improvements in disc cutter components including cutter ring materials and processing, as well as improvements in lubricants, bearings, seals and cutter condition monitoring. These developments have resulted in more reliable cutters capable of operating in a wide range of geological conditions. Ultimately these improvements result in a better value for both contractors and project owners.

The 2005 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention continued the upbeat mood found in 2004. The global mining industry is booming due to higher commodity prices in nearly every sector. Other factors include low commodity inventories, China’s strong resource demands, the weak U.S. dollar, the very strong Euro, global uncertainties, an almost overripe investment climate for natural resources and the highest mining exploration budgets in seven years. Even unglamorous commodities, like iron, uranium and zinc, received copious attention in talks, the investors’ exchange, the core shack and in certain hospitality suites. The following impressions were gathered at the convention and enhanced by conference handouts and some abstracts that are available on the PDAC’s Web site, www.pdac.ca. At least 119 papers were presented, almost twice last year’s number.

When SME’s 2006 Arizona Conference convened in December at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, AZ, there was considerable excitement among the 387 attendees. There was a noticeable buzz surrounding the progress of Phelps Dodge’s Safford copper mine in southern Arizona, one of the first new major copper mines to be permitted in more than 30 years in the United States. There were also plenty of good feelings about the mining industry in general. Commodity prices remained high and with no signs of a slowdown in the immediate future. Things were good in Arizona. But there were also cautionary tones at the conference and the Mining Foundation of the Southwest banquet that preceded it.

Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

As one of the largest private utilities globally, E.ON currently operates hard coal fired power stations in with a total installed capacity of some 20.000 MW: These thermal power plants consume domestic coals but are increasingly dependent on imported seaborne traded coal (in 2009 approx. 17 million t). Knowing that the company’s reputation and credibility depends in part on how E.ON lives up to the responsibilities along the entire energy value chain, E.ON takes a collaborative approach with the various suppliers. Hence, E.ON’s responsible policy also applies to the procurement of coal; the utility launched in 2009 a comprehensive Corporate Responsibility program with special focus on supply-chain audits. One of the first coal audits focussed on the Cerrejón coal mine in North Eastern Colombia. The authors will share the key learning’s and experience from the Colombian audit jointly conducted with an independent auditor and E.ON experts from the Corporate CR and E.ON Energy Trading.
