4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

This chapter on the role of minerals in developing economies is oriented toward economic policy issues. The discussion and analysis cut across the technical, economic, legal, and policy fields. The goal of this chapter is to pro- vide relevant background information important to individuals involved with the minerals sector in developing countries. Where possible, trends are shown to provide a basis for understanding the evolving role of minerals in developing economies. This chapter is divided into the following five sections: (1) characteristics of developing countries (which presents selected statistical comparisons); (2) government objectives in developing countries; (3) government policy formulation in developing countries; (4) determinants of future trends, and (5) a summary of the chapter's major points combined with the authors' view. CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES There are 155 nations in the world categorized as "developing countries." In total these nations represent about one third of the value of the world's mineral production, three quarters of the world's population, and over half of the world's land surface area. The group of so-called developing countries is quite diverse and there are exceptions to almost any general observation about the group as a whole. Most definitions of the term "developing country" are based on levels of per capita income. However, if per capita income is the sole criterion used in categorization, then several oil-exporting countries would jump from the category of developing country to the category of developed country.a Obviously, this results in a poor fit with respect to other measures. In general, the majority of developing countries can be characterized by relatively low per capita income, high population growth rates, high levels of unemployment, low levels of education, short average life ex- pectancies, income distribution skewed toward the highest 20% of the population, and a large share of exports represented by primary commodities. b For the purposes of this chapter a slightly modified version of the widely used World Bank system of classification (shown in Table 1.2.1) is used. As summarized in Table 1.2.1, developing countries are divided into three main groups based on estimated gross national product (GNP) per capita. It should be noted that the high- income, oil-exporting countries have characteristics of both developing and industrialized countries; however they are included for most statistical comparisons within the group of developing countries. Of the 155 developing countries in the world, approximately half produce minerals other than common building materials, and only 32 account for more than five percent of world pro-

"The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing not only because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is refractory, causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte in Montana and Quiruvilca in Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions – pH range of 8-13 – using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after potentially cycled voltammograms in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams constructed from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using STABCAL software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs. SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of elemental sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached from the surface. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs. SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS4 3-) or thiosulfate (AsO4 3-) without sulfur formation.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of ores and concentrates bearing arsenic and other hazardous elements often outweigh those in hydrometallurgical processing, particularly when minerals like enargite (Cu3AsS4) are present. The hydrometallurgical processing of enargite-bearing materials can be broken down into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under alkaline conditions. The selective leaching of arsenic would preferably leave behind copperrich sulfide phases, typically chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), which then become more amenable to conventional copper (and gold) processing. Furthermore, selective leaching often employs sulfide (S2-), bisulfide (HS-) or polysulfides (Sx 2-) to first extract the arsenic as AsS4 3- and AsS3 3- (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp et al., 2010a,b). However, hypochlorite leaching (Viñals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihajlovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and finegrinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface (Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006) have been investigated to increase the normally slow reaction kinetics. Because gold ores are becoming more refractory due to increasing arsenic contents as a result of enargite, these methods are being examined more closely by the gold-mining industry."

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125±7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenization temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166°C to 144°C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132°C to 128'C. Homogenization and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than MVT ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in two open pits (A and B) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: 1) replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores, 2) goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite, and magnetite that are disseminated in the fluorite ores, 3) partial replacement by fluorite of a titaniferous magnetite rimmed carbonatite dike in the A pit, and 4) partial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the B pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite, and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97% to 10.46% Ti02, averages 8.44% Ti02, and has an average V203 content of 0.35%. At high magnifications under the SEM, the magnetite shows abundant fine ulvöspinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range 3.21 to 5.0% and average 4.2%, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7% to 2.61%. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. The fluorite ores also have replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models utilizing Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.INTRODUCTION Methane gas and respirable dust are two hazards frequently encountered at continuous miner (CM) operations. An accumulation of both methane gas and coal dust may lead to massive explosions underground [1], and overexposure to respirable coal dust can result in pneumoconiosis (commonly referred to as “Black Lung Disease”) in coal workers [2]. Current U.S. federal coal mine regulations limit concentrations of methane gas to below 1% at the face area and require exposures to respirable coal dust to be at or less than 2.0 mg/m3 for an 8 h shift average. Begin on August 1, 2016; the overall respirable dust standard in coal mines is reduced from 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3 for full shift sampling. If the quartz content of the dust exceeds 5% by weight, the dust standard becomes more stringent, reducing the allowable concentration to the value of 10 divided by the % quartz."

INTRODUCTION Face haulage in underground mines and pit haulage in surface mines are the principal domains of rubber- tired haulage vehicles. In underground mines, cable- reeled or battery-operated shuttle cars and diesel-powered load-haul-dump vehicles are used; trucks are primarily used in surface mines. Although many concerns go into the selection of rubber-tired haulage vehicles, such as clearance and tire life, the most important factor from a mine-planning standpoint is the production capability of the vehicle in the mine environment. Therefore, this chapter will address this topic. UNDERGROUND FACE-HAULAGE VEHICLES The selection process for underground face-haulage vehicles is, in some respects, much simpler than that of the other haulage systems discussed to this point. It is simpler because these vehicles, which transfer the mined material from the face to the intermediate haul¬age system, are manufactured in various size ranges to cope with the confinement of underground opening widths and heights. However, since these vehicles oper¬ated in an intermittent fashion in conjunction with a constantly advancing face, the system's lack of perma¬nence and overall dynamic nature create a more diffi¬cult situation for predicting productivity. The emphasis in this section will be on prediction of productivity. There are three fundamental steps that must be taken to analyze the productivity potential of any face¬haulage system: l) Recognize the geologic (seam thickness, etc. ) and mining (opening widths, etc.) constraints that affect the velocity/clearance aspects of the haulage equipment, and select equipment from manufacturers' specifications with these con¬straints in mind. 2) Secure the elemental times of the face-haulage system. 3) Incorporate the elemental times into an accepta¬ble mine plan. By recognizing the geologic and mining constraints that affect the system layout, parameters, such as vehi¬cle payload, tonnage to be hauled per cut, and haulage distances, can easily be determined. Elemental times can be developed in two ways: 1) In an existing operation, a time study of the dynamic system can be conducted by placing three time-study engineers at the following static locations; (1) near the loading machine, (2) near the change-out point outby the face, and (3) near the dump. By synchronizing their watches and recording the actions of the haulage vehicles at these three locations, their time studies can be reduced to provide elemental times, such as vehicle tram rates (empty or loaded), vehicle discharge times, and loading rates. 2) In the absence of an existing operation, average values for the elemental times can be provided from other mines operating in similar condi¬tions, or by the manufacturers themselves.

"The new tunnels of the Copenhagen ""Cityringen"" will be excavated, at Kongens Nytorv square, crossing over the existing M1 and M2 metro lines. After the crossing, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and adjacent masonry buildings, with a minimum tunnel cover of about 4.5 m. The tunnels have an internal diameter of 4.9m and are being excavated through earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines in mixed face.The Magasin du Nord estate is characterized by a very complex structure, with different blocks built in different times. An assessment of the condition of the building and its sensitivity to tunnellinginduced ground movements has been conducted through a fully coupled soil-structure interaction analysis; based on the results of this analysis, mitigation measures have been designed.INTRODUCTIONThe Copenhagen Metro Cityringen is expected to be running in July 2019 and will consist of two single tracks in a twin tunnels, each approximately 16 km in length, for transporting up to 243,000 passengers on an average work day. The Cityringen includes 17 underground stations with island platforms, 4 crossover facilities and 3 construction and ventilation shafts. The tunnels is being excavated using earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines and have an internal diameter of 4.90 m.The intersection with the existing M1 and M2 metro-line will take place at Kongens Nytorv and at Frederiksberg. According to the design alignment, in Kongens Nytorv the new tunnels will pass over the existing M1 and M2 ones; as a result of this, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and the adjacent masonry building hosting a Mc Donald’s with a minimum cover of about 4.5m.In the framework of Risk Assessment for sensitive buildings, the effects of tunneling-induced ground movements on the Estates ØS0437 (McDonald’s building), ØS0428 (Magasin du Nord) and ØS0004 (Hviids Vinstue) were evaluated. To achieve this goal a fully coupled soil-structure interaction has been considered and the entire excavation process has been reproduced in a 3D model where the abovementioned buildings have been modeled. In this way, a risk assessment analysis was performed evaluating directly the effects of the excavation in terms of settlements and variations of the internal forces as far as the excavation process proceeds. In figure 1, a picture of the construction of Kongens Nytorv station, with Magasin du Nord and Mc Donald’s building on the background, is presented."

"The reduction behavior of low-grade lump hematite ore (100% 20-50 mm) has been evaluated by performing a series of coal-based direct reduction roasting tests followed by magnetic separation under different process conditions such as roasting time, temperature, reductant type and dosage, and grinding stage. To investigate mineralogical transformation and reduction characteristics of lump hematite ore, roasted ores and magnetic concentrates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and polarizing microscope. The results have shown that a magnetic concentrate with a total iron (TFe) grade of 90.7% was produced at an iron recovery of 83.9% when lump hematite ore was reduced at 1,200° C for five hours using 35% lignite as a reductant followed by two stages of grinding, for 20 min and 30 min each, and low-intensity magnetic separation. The degree of reduction is closely related to the change in the internal structure of the roasted ore. Lignite with a higher fixed carbon content and lower ash generated roasted ore with a more highly porous structure, which provides better permeability of reducing gas. Magnetite, fayalite and wustite were the dominant intermediates of coal-based direct reduction of lump hematite ore. Parts of wustite reacted with SiO2 or Al2O3 in gangue and generated fayalite or hercynite. FeO in fayalite was replaced by CaO to produce wustite, which was finally reduced to metallic iron. However, Fe in fayalite and hercynite produced with low contents of CaO cannot be reduced into metallic iron. Introduction Low-grade hematite ore, characterized by low Fe content and high SiO2 content, cannot be treated by traditional mineral processing methods due to its nonmagnetic property and fine liberation size. The direct reduction (DR) roasting process has been studied and proven satisfactory in treating difficult-toprocess ores, such as low-grade nickel laterite oxide ore (O’Connor et al., 2006; Cao et al., 2010; Guo et al., 2011), high phosphorus oolitic hematite ore (Li et al., 2012; Yu et al., 2013), low-grade hematite ore (Wei et al., 2013;) and iron ore tailings (Li et al., 2010), which greatly expand the resources of usable iron ores (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009). Therefore, the use of a DR process to treat low-grade hematite ore to produce direct reduced iron (DRI) is of great interest to many researchers of mineral processing and metallurgy (Weissberger et al., 1986)."

SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. 1.1. INTRODUCTION Despite indications of a general economic recovery in the U.S. during the mid-19801s, mine operators have not generally shared in the benefits of these reported better times. Budgets have not rebounded, borrowing is tougher, parent companies' pockets are not as deep as in previous years, and margins are not any better -- if there is any left over at all. Managing capital equipment budgets is always a challenge, and the last five years of stretched equipment lives make these decisions more tenuous. Delays and avoidance of replacements due to tough times inevitably makes those decisions increasingly difficult and usually more expensive The purposes of this paper are to present. a brief refresher outline of the fundamentals of equipment replacement analysis, to suggest a number of papers where analysis methods are explained in greater detail. and to recommend the use of a widespread microcomputer software capability (1-2-3) as the easiest path to a much-needed solution for a very difficult, and usually under-supported management decision problem 2. REPLACEMENT DECISION POLICY Investments in equipment replacements must compete for capital with all other investment alternatives. Capital for replacements of ten represents a greater commitment than do the new projects which a company might handle in a given year. But. sadly, formal policies for standardized analysis of replacements rarely exist, even in major companies. Yet this policy can be very significant in determining the competitiveness of a firm. Whereas many replacement decisions are based on cost minimization, economists and financial analysts agree that wealth maximization or return on investment is the superior criterion. Though the difference may seem slight, agreement on a firm's financial objective is vital. Replacement policy should be straight- forward. have a logical basis, and a proper level of sophistication. There are several reasons to develop a policy for replacement decision-making: [I] 1 - equipment's optimal economic life is nearly always shorter than its physical life; 2 - mine life often exceeds equipment life, so management must face these decisions routinly 3 - replacement capital costs, on an undiscounted basis, can run 25 to 75% of original capital 4 - technological changes may result in a newer machine or system which can operate more efficiently, more safely. or less expensively 5 - estimates should be made consistently in the fundamental areas of life expectancy, availability, utilization. price escalation, taxes 6 - long-term and short-term budgeting without decent data and analytical capability is nearly impossible, or at least ineffective Policy development assumptions which must be considered include: the planning horizon, cost patterns, interest rates, availability of capital, replacement vs. expansion, technology advances.

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. While the recovery of most copper sulfide minerals is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex, with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings.A geometallurgical investigation was undertaken of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit with the aim of determining what effects, if any, mineralogy and the mineralogical attributes of morphology, angularity, liberation and size have on molybdenite recovery in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products of Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. The samples were analyzed by normal polarized reflected light microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy using a Mineral Liberation Analyzer, revealing the presence of two distinct types of molybdenite, which are the two polytypes: hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins located in the core of the deposit, while the 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, ball-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Each polytype exhibited metallurgical properties consistent with those reported in the literature. The 2H polytype is easily ground, kinetically “faster” floating and displays surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high-quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions at most copper concentration operations. The 3R polytype is difficult to grind, kinetically “slower” floating and displays surface attributes that are less amenable to recovery. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenite.A preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits indicated a possible positive correlation between total economic metal budget and polytype content. Higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in gold-enriched porphyries than in molybdenum-enriched porphyries. This may help explain why it is easier to obtain higher rates of recovery in molybdenum ± tungsten-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R polytype. There is a potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present as well as its impact on the economics, in terms of exploration, and the processing circuit, in terms of plant design."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD The original application of sublevel caving was in ground so weak that it would collapse even in small headings when the support was removed. Heavily tim¬bered drifts were driven across the ore body; the timber was removed at the end of the drift, and the ore caved and slushed out. When dilution became excessive the next set was removed and so on. This method gave high dilution and poor recovery and was slow, but it was the only way to mine this type of ore body at that time. In more recent times the method has been adapted to stronger ground which needs to be drilled and blasted, so it is not a caving method as far as the ore is con¬cerned. However, the method does rely on the walls to cave and so the name sublevel caving has been retained. The method as presently generally applied is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Sublevels are established at approximately 7.6 to 12.2-m (25 to 40-ft) vertical intervals. They are usually accessed from a ramp system. A haulage drift is driven down the strike of the ore body, but in the waste. Production drifts are turned off the haulage drift and driven across the ore body on about 10.7-m (35-ft) horizontal centers. This divides the ore body into a geometrical pattern. Slot raises are driven at the end of the drifts near the ore-waste contact and the slot is expanded to the shape of the fan drilling. Up holes are drilled to break towards the slot at burdens of 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft). They are drilled past the next sublevel to the production drift im¬mediately above. When a sufficient number of fans has been drilled, production can start by blasting one or two fans at a time towards the slot. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units are used to muck the ore, which rills out into the drift. At first, when only a small area is mined, the walls may not cave, and the operation will be similar to open stoping. Later, sloughing from the walls will fill any voids created, and the ore after blasting will be con¬tained by the caved waste and gravitate downwards as mucking proceeds. "Carbonic acid prepared on-site from carbon dioxide gas is widely used in water treatment and increasingly in some industrial applications. It has not seen extensive use in mineral processing but is an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid for pH control, with the need to counteract high pH levels caused by cemented backfill of particular interest. The fundamental chemistry of carbonate solutions as applied to flotation and flocculation circuits is described as well as plant-scale application. A project to introduce use of carbon dioxide for pH control at the Hecla Greens Creek lead-zinc-silver-gold operation is planned to begin operation in the first half of 2015. INTRODUCTION Flotation pH Control and Backfill Most sulphide flotation circuits are run at pH values ranging from slightly acid to strongly basic, with slightly basic pH the most common. Lead sulphide circuits are typically run at values from 7.5 to 9, with zinc circuits running at higher values of 9.5 to 10.5. This has been the case with ores that produce a natural pH in the circumneutral range, so that the pH needs to be raised. Although lime [Ca(OH)2] is the cheapest reagent in use to raise pH, soda ash (Na2CO3) or caustic soda (NaOH) are also employed where sodium ions in solution are preferred to dissolved calcium, or, in the case of soda ash, the presence of carbonate is desired. The use of soda ash for pH control in lead circuits has been widely recommended for many decades (1). The situation is necessarily different at operations where cemented backfill is used in underground mines (2). Backfill, whether emplaced as rammed paste or pumped slurry, is composed of mill tailings mixed with around 10% Portland or similar cement. When later mining occurs near or adjacent to previously backfilled areas, a considerable amount of old backfill is inevitably mixed with new ore and shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed can easily approach 20%, with periods of higher content not unheard of. The presence of so much backfill, with its high cement content, produces results largely indistinguishable from adding a large amount of lime to run-of-mine feed: mill pH in the grinding circuits can range above 11 and high concentrations of calcium ions are present. The need to raise pH disappears; the problem becomes to lower it."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) forms when sulfide minerals are exposed to oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining, highway construction, and other large-scale excavations. Iron sulfides common in coal regions are predominately pyrite and marcasite (FeS2), but other metals may be complexed with sulfides forming chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), covellite (CuS), galena (PbS), and sphalerite (ZnS). Pyrite commonly occurs with these other metal sulfides thereby causing AMD where Cu, Pb, and Zn are mined. Upon exposure to water and oxygen, sulfide minerals oxidize to form acidic, sulfate-rich drainage. Metal concentrations in AMD depend on the type and quantity of sulfide minerals present. The drainage quality emanating from underground mines or backfills of surface mines is dependent on the acid-producing (sulfide) and alkaline (carbonate) minerals contained in the disturbed rock. In general, sulfide-rich and carbonate-poor materials produce acidic drainage. In contrast, alkaline-rich materials, even with significant sulfide concentrations, often produce alkaline conditions in water. Approximately 20,000 km of streams and rivers in the United States are degraded by AMD. About 90% of the AMD reaching streams originates in abandoned surface and deep mines. Since no company or individual claims responsibility for reclaiming abandoned mine lands (AML), no treatment of the AMD occurs and continual contamination of surface and groundwater resources results. The oxidation of iron disulfides and the generation of acidity occur through several reactions (Stumm and Morgan, 1970). The chemical equations can be found in Caruccio and Geidel (2000). If any of the processes represented by the equations were slowed or altogether stopped, the generation of AMD would also slow or cease. The equations show that 1000 Mg of rock containing 1% sulfur, all as pyrite, would yield upon complete reaction 31.25 Mg of acidity. Therefore, 31.25 Mg of 100% CaCO3 would be required to neutralize the acidity. The alkaline content of overburden determines whether there is enough neutralization potential (NP) to counteract the acid produced from pyrite oxidation. Of the many types of alkaline compounds present in rocks, only carbonates and clays occur in sufficient quantity to effectively neutalize AMD. A balance between the acid-producing potential and neutralizing capacity of an overburden sample will indicate the ultimate acidity or alkalinity that might be expected in the material upon complete weathering. Accurate prediction and control of AMD before surface mining require an understanding of three important factors: 1) overburden geochemistry, 2) method and precision of overburden handling and placement in the backfill during reclamation, and 3) the postmining hydrology of the site.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. "In 2014, the estimated value of total mine production of nonfuel minerals in the United States increased. The quantity of production increased for most mineral commodities mined in the United States, as did prices. Notable exceptions were the declines in prices for most precious metals. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Following the reduction in construction activity associated with the 2008- 2009 recession that continued through 2011, the construction industry continued to expand in 2014, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction. Other segments of the nonfuel minerals industries increased as well. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those for industrial mineral production (Table 1).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals. Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. The materials with the highest unit values, usually metals, tend to have very low production rates compared with those of many low-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the minerals industry in general, the value of production is used rather than tonnage produced. Although the value of metals and industrial minerals mined in the United States are similar, if tonnages are compared, construction aggregates dominate, dwarfing the production of all other minerals combined.Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of nonfuel mineral raw materials, including metals and industrial minerals, produced at mines in the United States in 2014 was $77.6 billion, a 3.5-percent increase from $75 billion in 2013 (Table 2). Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $15 billion (Fig. 2). Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to process mineral materials worth $697 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $41 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added estimated to be $2,530 billion in 2014.In the United States in 2014, mine production of each of 14 mineral commodities was worth more than $1 billion. These were, in decreasing order of value, crushed stone, copper, gold, cement, construction sand and gravel, iron ore (shipped), industrial sand and gravel, molybdenum concentrates, phosphate rock, lime, salt, zinc, soda ash and clays (all types)."

"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

In 2006 McNally International Inc. in a Joint Venture partnership with Aecon Constructors was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers; and YDSS Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue Project. These projects comprise a total of 13 kilometres of 2.74 meter finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS). Both contracts require the use of EPB tunnel boring machines with a precast concrete segmental liner. The following provides an overview the two projects.

The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2 foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.
