Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2008 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2008: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Metals Economics Group, 2008a, b), and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2008 and compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2008, primarily for precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver) and base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc). MEG includes information on additional mineral commodities only where it is available. Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets between $100,000 and $2.9 million, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2008 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies that chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data, and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 91 more companies in its 2008 survey than it did in 2007 USGS compilations of site data described here primarily include nonfuel minerals, with an emphasis on base metals, diamond and precious metals. Analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists and by other USGS scientists, as well as industry contacts and trade journals.

City Water Tunnel No. 3 is being built in order to provide a redundant system for delivering 4,542,500 m3 (1.2 billion gallons) of water per day throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The present tunnels, City Tunnel No. 1 and 2 (Figure 1), were put in service in 1917 and 1936 respectively, and both have been in continuous service. Tunnels No. 1 and 2 can-not be shut down for inspection or repair until City Tunnel No. 3 has been completed. City Tunnel No. 3 has two stages (Figure 1).Stage One is 20.1 km (12.5 mi) long and is presently delivering drinking water to the boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan. Stage Two consists of the Brooklyn-Queens Tunnel 17.7 km (11 mi) and the Manhattan Tunnel 14 km (9 mi). The Brooklyn-Queens leg is complete and is set to be put in service soon. The Manhattan Tunnel is being constructed and is the subject of this paper. The Manhattan Tunnel (Figure 1) is comprised of three legs: the north, south and east legs. The con-tract includes the excavation of 8,976 m (29,500 ft) of tunnel and the lining of 14,561 m (47,773 ft) of tunnel. The south tunnel, 5,705 m (18,720 ft), was excavated but not lined, under a previous contract. The tunnel ranges from 181 m (600 ft) to 152 m (500 ft) in depth in the bedrock under Manhattan. The tunnel contract also includes the construction of nine new shafts, 161 m (530 ft) average depth, and the completion of a tenth shaft (the previously built construction shaft). The Manhattan Tunnel contract was awarded to the sole bidder Schiavone/Shea/Frontier Kemper Joint Venture (SSF) for $668,532,680.00, on January 31, 2005. The Manhattan Tunnel was designed ?in house? by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the construction management was provided by a combined staff of the DEP and a joint venture of Jenny Engineering and URS.

Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

Federal and State sulfur oxide emission and ambient air quality regulations have been implemented to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970. Primary and secondary air quality standards have been established at levels considered necessary to assure the protection of the health and welfare of the public. Standards of performance under this Act have been established to control the rate of sulfur oxide emissions from individual sources so as to protect and to improve the quality of the Nation's air. The new source standards of performance were made rigorous for large coal burning stationary sources. This has had a severe impact on the electric utilities that operate the coal fired steam electric plants which are the largest consumers of the Nation's coal production. States have taken different approaches in State Implementation Plans (SIPS) as approved by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, have chosen to permit moderate SO2 emission rates from existing sources which are not in critical air basins. All are required to meet primary and secondary air quality standards and to limit sulfur oxide emissions from new large stationary sources to a minimum of 1.2 LBS of S02/MMBTU fired. This re- quires a fuel sulfur percentage of about 0.7 for a 12,000 BTU/lb coal. In an effort to develop strategies and technologies to conform to performance standards while continuing and hopefully expanding the utilization of the Nation's coal supply, the electric utilities, the Federal and State regulatory agencies, and other industries and government agencies are considering several alternatives. 1. Natural low sulfur coal 2. Flue gas desulfurization - (FGD) non-regenerative and regenerative 3. Coal gasification 4. Liquefaction and solvent refined coal 5. Fluidized bed combustion 6. Chemical coal cleaning 7. Physical coal cleaning Of these options, only the first and the last can be considered to be widely used in full commercial practice at this time. FGD has certainly demonstrated technical and operating feasibility and is close to being in full commercial practice but it remains to be seen if the large systems under construction are economically and environmentally optimum.

Ltd.’s 45-kt/month (49,600-stpm) concentrator at the Spektakel mine in South Africa is comprised largely of reconditioned equipment from the old O’Okiep mill, which operated from 1940-1975. When combined with modern approaches to layout, crushing, classification, and flotation, a simple-to-operate plant was constructed at a cost of only $3.2 million.

Many papers 'have been publihed on the role of the bacterium.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, and years of research have established the following environmental factors, which influence biological oxidation. 1. Oxygen is required for the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds to the sulfate form. Sufficient oxygen. is available from the air, consequently, it is of importance to get the air to the bacteria. 2. The bacteria are active in the pH range 1.4 3.5. Maximum activity occurs at pH 2..0 - 2.8. 3. -In order to allow the bacterial populations to expand, certain essential nutrients must be available. Nitrogen has to be supplied for the production of body protein, and ammonia is the source most readily accepted by the bacteria. Carbon dioxide is the only utilizable source of carbon and the small amounts available in air are the primary source of this element. Small amounts of phosphate, manganese,, potassium,. calcium. and magnesium are also required. These trace minerals are available from the water and host rock in sufficient quantities. 4. Water is required as a carrier for the oxygen carbon dioxide and other nutrients, as-well as a solvent for the metallic sulfates produced. The bacteria are motile and the water allows the bacterial populations to spread:: bacterial activity ceases if the equilibrium relative humidity drops below 100%. 5.-optimum bacterial activity occurs at temperatures of 34 - 35°.C (93 -.95° F). All activity ceases above 45° C. At lower temperatures, activity its dramatically decreased, but there is still a significant amount at 10 - 11° C.- Thiobacillus ferruoxidans has been isolated from a mine with a year round temperature of 3° C. 6. Unpublished results from our laboratory show that biological leach ore oxidation takes place during the rest periods at the same rate as during the wet leaching periods providing there is a film of moisture remaining around the particles. Optimum conditions can be readily achieved in the laboratory, but application of our laboratory knowledge to commercial leaching dumps is riot as simple. Attempts to achieve improved environmental conditions for the bacteria in leaching dumps would require substantial capital investment and careful planning of leaching operations. This paper

"Comminution circuits are widely used in nonferrous and precious metals milling. Steel crushers, grinding mills and grinding media are typically used in comminution circuits. Comminution circuit wear products, in the form of metallic iron (steel) fines, are unavoidably produced and report to undersize products in the classification circuit, i.e., flotation or leach feed, while tramp grinding steel (TGS) reports to classification oversize products and returns to the grinding mill, building up in the circulating load. In laboratory studies, TGS reduced grinding efficiency significantly, the impact being dependent upon the size of the TGS present in the mill. Because iron fines adsorb flotation reagents effectively, iron fines increase reagent consumption and reduce flotation recovery. Iron fines are also capable of reducing gold recovery in cyanidation circuits via a cementation reaction. When using filtered gold solution from the cyanidation circuit of an Alaskan gold mine, the gold concentration in solution was reduced by 0.2 to 2.6% over various reaction periods when iron fines were present in the solution.IntroductionComminution circuits are widely used in copper, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum and precious metal mills. Flotation and leaching processes are usually preceded by comminution (crushing and grinding) circuits in order to liberate valuable minerals for effective separation, concentration or dissolution by the subsequent flotation or leaching processes.Steel crushers, grinding mills and grinding media are typically used in comminution circuits. Comminution circuit wear products, in the form of metallic iron (steel) powder, are unavoidably produced and report to undersize products in the classification circuit (flotation or leach feed), while tramp grinding steel (TGS) reports to oversize productions during classification and returns to the grinding mill, building up in the circulating load. Variables affecting the amount of metallic iron powder and TGS produced in a comminution circuit include ore hardness, grinding mill operating conditions, comminution circuit design and the metallurgy of the steel used for manufacturing crusher liners, mill liners and grinding media. As one example, a comminution circuit product of 80% passing 200 mesh at the Pogo Mine, AK is estimated to contain approximately 2 kg/t of metallic iron. A finer grind will generally produce a comminution circuit product with higher metallic iron fines content."

China was once deficient in nickel and almost totally reliant on imports for its domestic needs, supplies mainly coming from Canada since the ending of imports from the U.S.S.R. in early 1960's. However, the discovery of the huge nickel/copper sulphide deposit in Jin Chuan, Gansu Province of northwestern China in late 1950's and its development and construction through the 1960's and 19701s, have much improved China's domestic nickel position. In 1985. China's nickel production has exceeded 27.000 tons, compared with only 7,000 tons in 1977. Today, Jin Chuan Nonferrous Metals Company operates two underground mines and a small open- pit; owns China's largest reserves of nickel and platinum, and the second largest reserves of copper and cobalt; and has become the most important subsidiary of China National Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNNC) which was established in April 1983. The Jin Chuan nickel-copper mines are located in Jin Chang City, Gansu Province, 1,700 km west of Beijing in the People's Republic of China (Figure 1). It is believed that Jin Chuan mines have the second largest nickel reserves in the world, after Sudbury basin, Canada. The deposits are situated on the north slope of the Longshu Mountains, 50 km north of Jin Chang City, and border on the southmost edge of the Gobi Desert plateau. The deposits were discovered in 1958. The total strike length of mineralized zones was approximately 6.5 km long, which was divided into four mining areas by faults (Figure 2). The Longshu underground mine of No. 1 mining area began development in 1959, with full ore production capacity of 1,000 TPD. The open-pit, also in No. 1 mining area, which was brought into operation in 1966 with ore output of 5,500 TPD, was closed down in 1982. The East Extension of the open-pit was put into operation in 1983; present production capacity is about 2,200 TPD. Nickel production of Jin Chuan mines in recent years, and production capacity of each mining operation, are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

Marine manganese nodules harbor a mixed population of manganese-oxidizing and -reducing bacteria, as well as bacteria that do not act on manganese. They also host phagotrophic protozoa. Out of several laboratory studies, one line of investigation indicates that some kinds of bacteria found on nodules can catalyze the oxidation of Mn2+ bound to Mn(IV) oxide at the surface of nodules at in situ temperature and pressure. In the absence of appropriate bacteria, the rate of oxidation of the surface-bound Mn2+ is significantly slower. How Fe(III) is incorporated is still unclear. Base metals such as Cu, Ni and Co, which are usually found in marine nodules in various quantities, may be incorporated through scavenging by Mn(IV) oxide. Laboratory evidence shows that some other bacteria on nodules can reduce the Mn(IV) oxide to Mn2+ in the presence of an appropriate source of reducing power in the form of organic carbon. The reduction of Mn(IV) oxide mobilizes manganese and trace metals such as Cu, Ni, and Co in the nodules. These bacteria reduce Mn(IV) whether oxygen is present or not. They could be harnessed in the bioleaching of nodules. The manganese(IV)-reducing bacteria and the bacteria that neither oxidize nor reduce manganese are thought to keep the organic matter in the nodule environment sufficiently low to favor bacterial manganese-oxidation, which in laboratory tests is inhibited by excess organic carbon. The preying by the protozoa on the different kinds of bacteria is thought to control the bacterial population on nodules and ensure continued growth of the manganese-oxidizing bacteria and the nodules. To eliminate interference from seawater salts in the bioleaching of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, it may be more advantageous to use terrestrial Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria than the Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria resident on nodules. The terrestrial bacteria would allow bioleaching in fresh water. Unlike the marine bacteria, most terrestrial bacteria studied to date reduce Mn(IV) oxide only anaerobically. A general outline for an anaerobic bioleach process of marine nodules with freshwater bacteria is discussed.

INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. 1. INTRODUCTION In April 1979, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) on Uranium Milling (NUREG-0511) for public comment. While the GEIS is a broad environmental impact assessment of the U.S. uranium milling industry as a whole, its primary focus is on the issue of uranium mill tailings disposal and long term isolation. In August of 1979, proposed regulations (U.S. Federal Register Notice 44FR50012), incorporating both conclusions of the GEIS and provisions of recent U.S. legislation on uranium mill tailings (Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978--UMTRCA), were also issued for public comment. This paper (1) briefly reviews the major conclusions of the draft GEIS, (2) summarizes the major elements and rationale of the associated, proposed regulations, and (3) reviews some of the major issues raised during the public comment period and changes which the NRC staff expects will be made in finalizing the GEIS and regulations. The risk in summarizing a document of such broad scope and complexity as the GEIS is that the depth of evaluation and the full technical bases for conclusions reached may not be adequately conveyed. Recognizing this, those Sections of the draft GEIS where a more complete discussion of the issues is presented are parenthetically noted in this paper in order to facilitate location of additional background and supporting material. 2. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS In the GEIS, a full range of tailings disposal alternatives was considered. These alternatives ranged from the past practice of doing little or nothing to control tailings, to advanced treatment alternatives such as nitric acid leaching to increase removal of radioactive elements and fixation of tailings in cement or asphalt. Our broad conclusions were: -Any alternative which results in the need for ongoing, active maintenance to assure long term containment, is unacceptable. (12.3.2.1) -Advanced treatment alternatives are unwarranted since they offer uncertain incremental benefits yet involve costs which may be as much as an order of magnitude greater than costs associated with acceptable alternatives. The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.

The iron-ore underground Kiirunavaara mine (Sweden) has been seismically active since 2008. In 2021 the production is on levels 1079 and 1108 m, at the deepest. The seismic activity has changed in character over time with one step change in 2015 when the number of large (ML>2) seismic events increased, and another one when the mine experienced a seismic event with Mw 4.2 in 2020. In 2017, the mine evaluated Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) as a possible mitigation technique for larger seismic events and a one-hole trial was performed. The trial proved promising, and it was decided to go forward with a large-scale trial covering an entire production area in the mine. The large-scale trial consists of 25 fracturing holes, 50 – 100 m long, running along 500 m out of the ~4500 m long orebody and spanning between production levels 1108 m and 1252 m. The fracturing process continued for a year, resulting in ~38,000 seismic events with −3.3<ML<1.4. The breakdown pressure varied between fractures in the same hole as well as between holes in the same area. Average breakdown pressure per hole was between 12 MPa and 50 MPa. The seismic response to HF in 2021 varied greatly from hole to hole and between fractures in the same hole. The variation in response could be related to the geological conditions and the infrastructure, such as large caving ore passes. In this paper some details about the experiments and broad preliminary analysis of the effect of the HF by using seismic source parameters of the induced seismic events are presented: 1) Distribution of seismic activity, 2) the ‘equivalent’ magnitudes for each hole calculated from the cumulative seismic energy and seismic potency released during the fracturing, compared with the local geological conditions; 3) the predominant failure mechanism of the seismic events caused by HF was defined. A difference in the behaviour between larger and smaller events was noticed, as ML>0 events seem to be compression type failures and ML<0 events seem to be related to slip on pre-existing structures. No seismic events related to creation of a new fracture have been identified yet.

Although laboratory studies of tin flotation have been reported as far back as the 1920`s(1), the commercial application has only been realized within the past few years(2,3). The principal technical difficulty in the application of the process to tin ores has not been in the flotation of cassiterite itself, this mineral being readily recoverable with the common collectors, including xanthates with heavy metal ion activation(2). The difficulty has been with the depression of the gangue minerals commonly associated with tin ores, and to a lesser extent with the problems of collector consuming semi-colloidal minerals which are in some cases present. The application of sulfosuccinamate collectors to flotation of cassiterite from the Catavi, Bolivia, slime tailings has recently been described(3). The investigation which led to this successful process development included studies of other samples of gravity plant tailings as well as of lode tin ores. A common flowsheet with few significant variations was applied to most of these ore samples with acceptable results. In the following the process is described and the results of its application to samples from Bolivia and elsewhere given. Among the factors considered are: gangue depression, particle size and slime effects, and reagent and pulp density levels.

The construction and erection of the Coleraine concentrating plant was commenced in April, 1909, and was completed (with the machinery installed) ready for use in 1910. Attached to the main building is &apos;a table house large enough to accommodate con¬centrating tables for five units and space for a small machine shop and supply store. For the handling of the&apos; railroad cars in the upper portion of the mill there is provided on the north side of the main structure a trestle approach 650 feet long, and on the south or opposite side a tail track 300 feet long. The latter is so constructed as to permit its being incorporated directly in a possible future extension of the plant. The building, viaduct approach and tail, trestle, as well as the table house, are con¬structed of steel, the total amount used being 6,100 tons. The building is covered by corrugated&apos; steel sheeting over 2 x 6-inch wood sheathing fastened directly to the structural steel. The north end of the trestle approach is connected with the main road-beds forming the track system for delivery of the crude ore to the plant over an embankment of a maximum height of 110 feet containing over 2,000,000 cubic yards of dirt.

With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials, and consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium (V). Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, Xray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 weight percent V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples, calcium carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the Vbearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

The Endako Mine is an open-pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, about 960 km (600 road miles) north of Vancouver. Production for the latter part of 1992 was expected to averaged 63.5 kt/d (70,000 stpd). Of that amount, 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) was the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 11.5 to 14.5 m3 (15 to 19 cu yd) electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 320 mm (12.25 in.) electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas: the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the southeast stage of the Endako Pit. Stripping is carried out in the south wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM-BM-flotation circuits. The majority of the molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade molybdenum oxide (M003). A portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure MoS2 product.

At the Schwartzwalder Mine (Cotter Corporation, Golden, Colorado) ion exchange resins have been used in mine water treatment experiments. The experiments, initiated in October 1979 and currently in progress, demonstrate that mine water uranium values can be reduced to levels as low as 10 ppb. Duolite® A-101D, a strongly basic anion exchange resin, was tested in laboratory-scale columns (1 inch diameter) initially and then in pilot-scale columns (4 inch diameter), using both co-current and counter-current operational modes. Observations and conclusions resulting from these studies can be summarized as follows: (1) Duolite® A-101D appears to have successfully extracted uranium at influent levels of approximately 2.0 ppm over multiple loading and elution cycles, consistently producing effluent concentrations as low as 10 ppb uranium. (2) Based upon present test data, counter-current regeneration appears to be the key to successful operation. Upflow loading and downflow elution are the preferred modes for service and regeneration, respectively. (3) Filtration is a necessary pretreatment to remove fine clay and inorganic precipitates that will foul the resin, causing excessive pressure drop and poor loading and elution kinetics. (4) This waste treatment application is unique in that it offers the opportunity to recover some or all of the capital investment in the treatment facility
