Solvay Chemicals Company mines trona in south-central Wyoming and has done so for many years. The mine is one of several in a mid-continent sedimentary basin that hosts the largest trona resource in the world. Trona is an evaporite, a sesquicarbonate that occurs in several seams of varying thicknesses and depths. Trona is processed into soda ash which has a number of industrial uses in the manufacture of glass, detergent, paper and chemicals. Figure 1 shows the location of the Solvay Mine. A ventilation shaft was recently excavated at Solvay Chemical Company’s mine in the trona patch. In fact, a 22 ft (6.7 m) diameter shaft (inside diameter) was bored upwards from the 1500 ft (457 m) level to the surface. The first bored section was 26 ft (7.9 m) in diameter that allowed for a 2 ft (0.6 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 1500 ft (457 m). A second bored section was 24 ft, (7.3 m) in diameter that allowed for a 1 ft (0.3 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 750 ft (229 m). This shaft is the #5 Shaft. Figure 2 shows the cutter head used to excavate the shaft.

Energy West Mining operates the Deer Creek and Cottonwood/Trail Mountain coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Price, UT. The Deer Creek Mine extracts the Upper Blind Canyon seam and the Cottonwood/Trail Mountain Mine extracts the Hiawatha seam 12 to 36 m (40 to 120 ft) below. Both seams average about 2.8 m (9 ft) in thickness. Cover depths exceed 550 m (1,800 ft) in a large portion of the unmined reserve. Stability problems at Deer Creek are mostly due to coal bursts caused by high stresses associated with deep cover and sandstone channels. Most of the bursts have occurred in gate pillars and, to a lesser extent, at the longwall face and during development. The introduction of a two-entry gateroad system with 9-m- (30-ft-) wide yield pillars has been a major factor in controlling and minimizing gate pillar [ ] bursts (Agapito et al., 1988). However, some bursting began to occur in the 9-m- (30-ft-) wide pillars as cover depths reached 550 to 610 m (1,800 to 2,000 ft). This was due to more rapid and higher abutment loading in areas with very strong roof and stiff floor.

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

The term kaolin is derived from "kauling". a Chinese word meaning high ridge, which was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago.(1) Other common names used today for kaolin include "clay" and "China Clay". The former word technically has a broader meaning and could refer to various types of clays such as bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin as described above but could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms "kaolin" and "clay" will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's widespread industrial usages center on the mineral's (kaolinite) physical features of good color, low viscosity and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with approximate composition Of 2H20.A1203.2Si02. As will be shown later, a new version of the product, calcined clay with modified hydration content, is gaining widespread usages. Components of any particular kaolin in addition to alumina and silica are viewed as impurities. The more valued deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of highest purity.

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

The Homes take Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota has a yearly production of 1,868,741 tons of ore produced from horizontal cut-and-fill stopes and timber cut-and-fill stopes. This production, in addition to the necessary development (drifts and raises), requires 5,168,271 feet of drilling annually. The rock for the most part consists of quartz; mica schist; and cummingtonite schist; and must be considered as relatively hard. Penetration rates average about 15 inches per minute using an operating air pressure of 100 psi. The rock is tough, rather than brittle, and dulling occurs quite rapidly. The average regrind period is approximately 19 feet per regrind using a 1-7/16 inch carbide bit. At the present time, all drilling is accomplished with 2-5/8 inch bore airleg mounted drills, and 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch diameter bore -stopers (raising only). These machines are all direct striking, with 4-1/4 inch chucks. 7/8-inch hexagonal carbon drill steel with forged collars are used in conjunction with 1-7/16 inch multi-use, threaded, carbide bits. 62,793 rods, and 16,234 bits are used to maintain the yearly production. The number of rods noted are the rods that were sent: underground, both new and reconditioned.

Industrial-mineral production contributes on the order of CDN$1.5 billion per year to the economy of Saskatchewan, Canada. Potash is the primary industrial mineral produced in the province, followed by aggregate, sodium sulphate, salt, potassium sulphate, peat, clays, silica sand, calcium-chloride brine, and "clinker." Potentially economic deposits of kaolin, diamond, and building stone are under evaluation. All of the major deposits of commodities discussed here are located south of lat 56°30'N. Most of the locations are presented on Figure 1 POTASH Saskatchewan supplies approximately 30% of the world's demand for potash. Eight conventional underground mines and two solution mines produced an all-time high of more than 13 million metric tonnes of potash (KC1) (8 million tonnes K2O equivalent) in 1997, valued at over CDN$1.4 billion. All of the mines exploit the middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite. The four potash-bearing members of the Prairie Evaporite underlie much of southern Saskatchewan and extend southward into North Dakota and Montana and east- ward into Manitoba (Fig. 2). Halite and anhydrite separate the potassic members. The evaporite beds locally are interrupted by solution structures (anomalous ground). Some of the structures may be related to deep-seated tectonic features.

Refractory gold ore contains sulfide minerals like pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite that are difficult to be directly leached by cyanidation or by lixiviants such as thiourea and halides. In such cases, it is necessary to perform oxidative pretreatment of the ore to oxidize the sulfide matrix, and gold particles can be exposed to the solution during the leaching process [1]. In recent years, hypochlorite and chloride solutions have been introduced as alternative materials for hydrometallurgical methods of gold extraction instead of cyanide solution [2]. A previous study by Hasab et al. [3] reported that the gold dissolution rate in hypochlorite solution was higher than in the cyanidation process, due to the presence of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) as a strong oxidizing agent. In a hypochlorite leaching system, the change in pH can influence the presence of oxidant species in the solution: the hypochlorite ion (OCl−) is stable in pH greater than 7.5, HOCl can be found in pH between 4.0 and 7.5, and aqueous chlorine (Cl2 (aq)) is the predominant oxidant when pH is below 4.0. As HOCl is the most effective oxidizing agent for gold extraction, pH should be maintained in the range of HOCl stability [4].

The production data of many mines have not reconciled geostatistical estimations based on exploration and development drilling. The discrepancies in recovered metals are sometimes as large as 30%. A number of factors are responsible for such unpleasant outcomes. A major cause, however, is the lack of geological controls in the implementation of geostatistical techniques. Geological modeling establishes geological constraints and mineralization/ore envelopes. Geological constraints are usually established through drill hole interpretation. Mineralization and ore envelopes have been delineated manually based on assay grades. The issues associated with manual methods are: •Time requirements . •Inconsistent dilution. •Uncontrollable implementation variance. Although the time issue may not be a big concern for some companies, the other two have been responsible for many undesired estimation errors. A new geostatistical approach described in this study is designed on the basis of indicator and ordinary kriging. The central component of the method is the procedure for automatic delineation of mineralization and ore envelopes. The method, referred to as probability assigned constrained kriging (PACK), is demonstrated on a Carlin-type gold deposit. The estimation results are compared to blast-hole based production panels, showing that the estimated tonnage is about 2.1 % higher than the actual production, and the average grade is about 2.4% lower.

Methods to determine frother functions, control of bubble size and froth properties, are now widely used. Some collectors also exhibit frother functions which are less understood. Using a water-air system in a mini-mechanical flotation cell setup, this paper determines bubble size and water overflow rate for three amine collectors: one primary amine (dodecylamine, DDA) and two commercial ether amines (Flotigam® EDA and Flotigam® 2835-2L) and their combination with two common frothers, MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and PPG 425 (polypropylene glycol, molecule weight 425). Compared to the frothers, the amines were less effective in reducing bubble size, giving larger minimum size and the two commercial amines showed evidence of coalescence at low concentration. In blends, at fixed frother dosage, frother eliminated the coalescence but as amine concentration increased the amines dominated bubble size. Water overflow was a strong function of reagent type. For fixed 1-cm froth depth, PPG 425, Flotigam® 2835-2L and to a lesser extent DDA produced overflow while MIBC and Flotigam® EDA did not. In blends with frother overflow increased except with Flotigam® EDA. Mechanisms are briefly explored. The principal benefit of blending identified is the elimination of coalescence if residual concentration of the two commercial amines is below ca. 10 ppm.

Large roof outbursts began occurring in November 1986 at Domtar's Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, working the bedded Salina A-2 Salt unit. The outbursts, measuring about 13-20 m in diameter, released high concentrations of methane from cavities that extended into carbonate roof units. Spontaneous ignitions of methane gas during an outburst seriously burned a mine technician. The Canadian Ministry of Labour contacted the U.S. Bureau of Mines for technical assistance to aid in mine managements1 efforts in alleviating the problem. Initial gas content determinations of salt samples from the outbursts by acoustic test methodology revealed no methane enrichment. In- mine core drilling and subsequent methane content testing indicates the main source of methane in overlying roof units. Drilling the roof units demonstrated the potential of draining methane from areas showing signs of impending outbursting and alleviating the danger. Three mechanisms are considered the most likely means by which methane was introduced to the mine environment. These are (1) hydrocarbon gases released from brines, (2) gas transport along horizontal bedding planes or gas accumulations in bedding separations, and (3) mining-induced fracturing. The abundance of higher hydrocarbons in gas yielded by non-evaporite rock samples from the Goderich mine may be indicative of a former association with liquid petroleum.

Throughout the mining industry, pneumoconiosis is one of the most severe occupational health problems being faced. The goal of completely eliminating pneumoconiosis as an occupational health hazard was underscored by the Federal Government with its enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969). Under this law, permissible dust level standards will be placed at 2 mg/m3 in mine atmospheres by December 30, 1972. The mining industry is thus faced with the tremendous technical challenge of achieving this level. Two basic questions can be raised with regard to this legislation. First, does a maximum dust concentration of 2 mg/m3 prevent the occurrence of pneumoconiosis? Secondly, can this dust standard be achieved using presently available methods and equipment? A precise answer to the first question has not yet been developed by the medical profession. Studies are continuing on the origin, prevention, and therapy of pneumoconiosis, and permissible dust levels could become even lower as medical evidence accumulates. The effect of coatings on the incendive properties of aluminum alloy 6061-T651 in air-6.4%CH4 was studied for collisions between rusted steel and both uncoated and coated projectiles with incident energies as high as 300 J (220 ft-lb) and velocities as high as 200 m/s (660 fps). These conditions were intended to simulate the rough handling of equipment in coal mines. The ignition probability using uncoated alloy projectiles increased with increasing relative humidity and appeared to be influenced by atmospheric ozone content. The incendive properties of both the uncoated and coated alloy depended on the type of rust used, but the dependence of the coated alloy was very different from that of the uncoated alloy. A number of coatings developed in the last 25 years were found to offer protection from ignition and to remain largely intact for occasional collisions or collisions randomly distributed over the coating surface, but probably not for repetitive collisions at any given point on the coating. These protective coatings utilize a hard anodized aluminum alloy surface coated with one or more layers followed by heat treatment of the coating. Coatings containing Teflon and MoS2 and thicker than 50 µm (2 mils) appear to be most effective.

The European climate and energy framework for 2030 is highlighting the reduction of man-made CO2 by increasing the use of renewable energy to mitigate climate change. In this spirit, Germany has decided to erase the coal use as an energy source by 2038 completely. Inevitably, this strategy promises a feasible, responsible, and sustainable post-mining management, because 200 years of coal mining have created numerous challenges necessary to tend to once the mining ends. Thus, the Research Institute for Post- Mining (FZN) at the TH Georg Agricola University in Bochum, Germany, has developed a holistic approach to meet these postmining challenges including further expertise present at our university. Here, the four strategic research pillars are (1) technical geoecology and hydrogeology to avoid and mitigate risks underground, (2) geomonitoring to evaluate and protect the surface, (3) industrial heritage preservation and engineering to secure and reuse brownfields such as mine sites, and (4) economic transformation planning of mining regions to enable a prosper future for generations to come. In all efforts, we aim to achieve the fundamental goals of the UN to deal with the resources of our planet responsibly and sustainably. Furthermore, we are synergizing increasingly with national and international networks in the interest of social, economic, and environmental stakeholders.

The effects of artificial weathering on the mechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone have been investigated. Weathering was simulated in the laboratory by subjecting cylin- drical specimens of rock to alternate cycles of wetting and drying (in distilled water at 2O0C 2 5OC and in an electric oven at 105OC t 1°C, respectively). The total number of cycles was 100 and the geomechanical characteristics of the altered material were determined through uniaxial compressive and indirect tensile ("Brazilian") tests, with the determination of axial and trans- verse strains and monitoring of acoustic emission activity (rate and total event count). Moisture content and weight loss data were collected after each cycle and the mechanical parameters (unconfined strength, indirect tensile strength, young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, permanent set and AE/MS activity) were determined for unweathered specimens and after 10, 20, 50 and 100 cycles of wetting and drying. Hypotheses for the effect of weathering on the geomechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone are proposed as reinforced by petrographic analyses carried out for the different stages of artificial weathering. A methodology for assessing the degree of physical weathering of rocks is proposed based on the number of wetting and drying cycles.

"The world’s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), at the time of her launch in 2012, the TBM locally referred to as “Bertha,” is incapacitated due to mechanical failure. Bertha’s stoppage places her 25m below the surface between the aged Alaskan Way Viaduct and the failing Seattle Seawall. Accessing Bertha with a vertical shaft provides the best approach to access all facets needed for repairs and will allow the full removal of Bertha’s cutter head and related inner workings. Due to the limited area above the tunnel alignment and physical constraints created by existing infrastructure, the dimensions of the otherwise symmetrical shaft are heavily impacted, thereby requiring special attention to design and layout. Consequently, the shaft design required a combination of 3m, 2.5m, 2.2m, 1.5m and 1m diameter unreinforced drilled secant piles coupled with various ground improvement techniques and dewatering, to fully satisfy the shoring design requirements. This paper will describe the shaft installation procedures, equipment used and pitfalls encountered while undertaking access shaft construction of this magnitude. INTRODUCTION Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal meters of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly over 1.6 m per day. It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s 2nd largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m, averaging 1.4 m per day, and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m mark and Bertha was now averaging 3.6 m per day, achieving as much as 12.8 m of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on December 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt. Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by WSDOT to monitor ground water conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

INTRODUCTION Morro do Niquel is located near the small town of Pratdáolis in the southwest part of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, about 300 km in a straight line north of São Paulo and 300 krn west of Belo Horizonte. The deposit is known since 1935. Systematic exploration started, however, only in 1957 and production with one furnace in 1962. Since 1969, after the installation of a second furnace, the mine produces about 2 500 tons of nickel, contained in ferronickel, per year. This production is now consumed totally by the Brazilian steel industry. The "Morro do Niquel" is a serpentinite stock of 900 by 400 m which rises 200 m high above the surrounding metamorphic rocks of Algokian age (see Figure 1). On top of the hill there is a leached barren zone of about 200 by 400 m, generally 20-30 m deep, which consists practically only of a boxwork of quartz colored brown by limonite. Surrounding this zone on the sides of the hill is weathered, decomposed serpentinite which contains about 213 of the economic nickel mineralization. Roughly 113 of the ore reserves lie below the leached overburden representing ore of a different type. The geological map and cross-section, Figure 2, give a clear picture of the occurrence.

INTRODUCTION The Ningyo-toge Mine is located in the western part of Honshu, about 800 km from Tokyo. Since the discovery of uranium ore deposit at Ningyo-toge in 1955, different kinds of mining and milling tests have been carried out. A new pilot plant of milling and UF6 conversion is also being under construction. Operations are scheduled to start by the end of this year. In 1979, the uranium enrichment pilot plant was constructed at Ningyo-toge and test operations have started. Thus, the Ningyo-toge area is assigned to undertake the Research and Development of the upstream of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan. PNC has been strengthening its security measures more than ever. This paper will focus on the disposal of wasted material, especially on the disposal of heap leaching residue, in Japan. URANIUM ORE DEPOSITS The uranium of the Ningyo-toge Mine is characterized genetically by epigenetic sedimentary type deposits. They occur in the host rock of Neogene tertiary fluviatile conglomerates and sandstones which unconformably overlies the Mesozoic-Palaeogene granitic basement covered with lucustrine deposits and volcanic ejecta. More than 12 deposits have been found over the area of approximately 160 km2, and distribution of the deposits are strongly controlled by the so-called channel structure, probably remnants of paleo-streams on the denudation surface of the underlying grantic basement. Each ore body has different shape and dimension respectively, but about 2-3 meters thickness with the average grade of 0.05-0.2% U308 is common feature of the ore bodies. The ore is soft and loose, and it is composed of common rock forming minerals of allogenic origin and their altered products. The chemical composition of the ore depends on the constituents of the country rocks or the pebbles. A primary mineral, ningyoite and secondary mineral, autunite are major ore minerals, although three primary tetravalent minerals and thirteen secondary hexavalent minerals have also been detected. MINING EXPERIMENT Since 1959, various types of underground mining tests have been carried out at Ningyo-toge Mine. The room and pillar method was safe and simple, although the uranium ore recovery was below 70%. After experiment of the retreating long-wall method and slicing mining method, it was found that the modified long wall method was the most appropriate for the underground mining of the Ningyo-toge uranium deposits. This method was completed successfully to increase efficiency up to 2 or 3 times, as compared to conventional methods. MILLING EXPERIMENT In 1964, a small test mill was constructed at Ningyo-toge, and a milling experiment using the Ningyo-toge uranium ore was started. Re-modelling of equipments and improvement of the process lead to the establishment of the technique of the so-called wet process, and produce UF4 directly from the ore. This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.

Early in the design stage of their new concentrator for the Mount Wright Plant, Quebec Cartier Mining decided to use a process computer for total control of crushing, grinding and concentrating. A map of the area is given in figure 1 and a view of the plant in figure 2. Although the use of process computers is not a new idea in petrochemical and chemical industries, their use in the mining industry is very limited. We innovated in using the computer, not only for data logging, as we have seen in some other plants, but a sole operator located in the administration building, starts and stops mill lines, crushers, load-out system, tailings, thickeners, etc ... by means of a CRT console. Our process is fairly simple as can be seen on the schematic process flow diagram (figure 3). .The ore, carried by 136t diesel electric trucks, is dumped through ore pockets onto two primary pan feeders. The feeders supply two 1,52mx2,79m gyratory crushers which reduce the ore to minus 20,32 cm. Each crushing line have a capacity of 5600t per hour and feed a shuttle conveyor distributing the crude ore into six silos.
