Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 m (8 ft) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting. Saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile. This implies that care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a depth of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Canada's gypsum industry began more than 200 years ago in the Maritime provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's 10 provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.4 Mt (9.3 million st) of crude gypsum, and 17 processing plants manufactured 2.5 Mt (2.8 million st) of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production. However, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum pose a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. ST Equipment & Technology LLC (STET) has developed a novel processing system based on tribo-electrostatic belt separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an energy-efficient and entirely dry technology. In contrast to other electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles >75μm in size, the STET triboelectric belt separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1μm) to moderately coarse (500μm) particles, with very high throughput. The STET tribo-electrostatic technology has been used to process and commercially separate a wide range of industrial minerals and other dry granular powders. Here, bench-scale results are presented on the beneficiation of low-grade Fe ore fines using STET belt separation process. Bench-scale testing demonstrated the capability of the STET technology to simultaneously recover Fe and reject 2 from itabirite ore with a D50 of 60μm and ultrafine Fe ore tailings with a D50 of 20μm.The STET technology is presented as an alternative to beneficiate Fe ore fines that could not be successfully treated via traditional flowsheet circuits due to their granulometry and mineralogy. INTRODUCTION Iron ore is the fourth most common element in earth’s crust [1]. Iron is essential to steel manufacturing and therefore an essential material for global economic development [1-2]. Iron is also widely used in construction and the manufacturing of vehicles [3]. Most of iron ore resources are composed of metamorphosed banded iron formations (BIF) in which iron is commonly found in the form of oxides, hydroxides and to a lesser extent carbonates [4-5]. A particular type of iron formations with higher carbonate contents are dolomitic itabirites which are a product of the dolomitization and metamorphism of BIF deposits [6]. The largest iron ore deposits in the world can be found in Australia, China, Canada, Ukraine, India and Brazil [5]. The chemical composition of iron ores has an apparent wide range in chemical composition especially for Fe content and associated gangue minerals [1]. Major iron minerals associated with most of the iron ores are hematite, goethite, limonite and magnetite [1,5]. The main contaminants in iron ores are 2 and Al2O3 [1,5,7]. The typical silica and alumina bearing minerals present in iron ores are quartz, kaolinite, gibbsite, diaspore and corundum. Of these it is often observed that quartz is the mean silica bearing mineral and kaolinite and gibbsite are the two-main alumina bearing minerals [7]. Iron ore extraction is mainly performed through open pit mining operations, resulting in significant tailings generation [2]. The iron ore production system usually involves three stages: mining, processing and pelletizing activities. Of these, processing ensures that an adequate iron grade and chemistry is achieved prior to the pelletizing stage. Processing includes crushing, classification, milling and concentration aiming at increasing the iron content while reducing the amount of gangue minerals [1-2]. Each mineral deposit has its own unique characteristics with respect to iron and gangue bearing minerals, and therefore it requires a different concentration technique [7].

At the Mount Isa mine, Mount Isa, Qld., Australia, sublevel open-stope mining is used for copper ore while both sublevel open-stope and cut-and-fill methods are used for the silver-lead-zinc ores. Production in 1979¬80 was 4 730 000 t (5,200,000 st) copper ore and 2 590 000 t (2,850,000 st) of lead ore. The deepest mine level currently is 960 m below the surface. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The mine is located in the valley of the Leichhardt River in Lower Proterozoic sediments of the Mount Isa group. The regional strike of the sediments is north¬south and they have a persistent westerly dip of about 1.1 rad (65°). In the mine area, the Mount Isa group comprises a sequence of alternating bands of dolomitic shales and siltstones some 3.2 km (2 miles) in width. It is bounded on the east by greenstones and quartzose sediments of the Eastern Creek volcanics, and on the west by the Mount Isa fault, west of which occur schists and other metamorphic rocks. The ore bodies as currently known at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart shale, a formation of thinly bedded pyritic, dolomitic, and volcanic shales some 1070 m (3500 ft) thick. Towards the top of the Mount Isa group sediments, copper and silver-lead-zinc ore bod¬ies occur as contiguous but discrete entities and are mined and treated separately (see Figs. I and 2). Argentiferous galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and minor associated sulfides occur in distinct concordant bands throughout the Urquhart shales. Wherever these bands are grouped together in sufficient density they constitute silver-lead-zinc ore bodies with widths varying up to 36.6 m (120 ft). Other mineralized bands are common in intervening beds. Individual ore bodies persist for many hundreds of meters concordant with the strike and dip of the enclosing shales. Intersections of these beds with fold axes provide local zones of enrichment but otherwise the mineral content of the ore bodies varies only slightly throughout the extent of the dip and strike. Chalcopyrite is the only important primary copper mineral. It occurs in association with pyrite and pyrrhotite as disseminated flocks and as vein fillings throughout irregularly shaped zones of folded, brecciated, and re¬crystallized Urquhart shale. These zones, which are lo¬cally termed "silica-dolomite" bodies, are broadly transgressive to the shale bedding and confine all significant copper mineralization to the virtual exclusion of silver¬lead-zinc mineralization. In some areas, the downward percolation of acidic water through faults and shears has caused extensive leaching of the coarse-grained carbon¬ates to depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft), but most of the silica-dolomite remains unleached and the ground is competent. The majority of lead ore being mined is north of the main shaft pillar (R62, U62) area. In mid-April 1992, MINING ENGINEERING mailed a survey questionnaire relating to mining shovels and hydraulic excavators to 125 SME members working at surface mines or at the headquarters of companies that operate surface mines. The mailing was directed to individuals whose titles indicate that they have management or mine planning responsibilities for surface mining operations. A total of 56 usable surveys returned by June 17 are the basis of this report. Precious metals mines Eighteen precious metals mines or mining companies returned completed surveys in time to be included in this report. Of these, 14 use hydraulic shovels only for both ore and waste, I uses both hydraulic and rope shovels, and 2 use Caterpillar 988 front-end loaders for both ore and waste. (Of the latter 2, neither expects to be in the market for a shovel in the next three years. I of these 2 placed Harnischfeger P&H number one and O&K number two in response to the question, "Based on your current knowledge of their machines, which manufacturer would you likely chose to supply new shovels or excavators to a mine or mines operating under your responsibility, if you were in the market?") Another uses front-end loaders, make not designated. The latter does not expect to be in the market for mining shovels or excavators within the next three years. Of the final total of 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators to load ore and waste, 8 use Hitachi excavators only, 1 uses Demag excavators only, 1 uses Liebherr excavators only, 1 uses O&K excavators only, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and O&K excavators, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and Hitachi excavators, and 1 uses Hitachi and Demag excavators. Of the 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators, 7 use excavators in the 7.6 to 11.5 m; (10 to 15 cu yd) size range. Of these 7, 5 use only excavators in this size range, and they are used to load both ore and waste. 1 of the 7 also uses 11.5 to 17 m&apos; (15 to 22 cu yd) excavators, and I also uses a 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd) excavator. Of the 7 remaining of these 14 precious metals mines that use only hydraulic excavators, 3 use 11.5 to 17 m&apos; (15 to 22 cu yd), 2 use 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd), and 2 use less than 7.6 m&apos; (10 cu yd) units.

"The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

"The overall goal of this study is to develop a suitable flow sheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. A total of 14 coal samples of different ranks were examined for REE concentration, and an anthracite coal sample with the highest REE concentration of more than 700 ppm in the coal ash was selected for REE extraction tests. This paper reports on the results of the experimental program completed in the first part of the study, which included hightemperature leaching with nitric acid followed by solvent extraction tests using various organic extractants, namely, tributyl phosphate, Cyanex 572, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and their combinations. A 4×2×2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of 32 high-temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity at four levels, solids content at two levels and leaching time at two levels. The highest recovery rates of 90 percent for light rare earth elements (LREEs) and 94 percent for heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) were obtained from the optimum leaching test conditions while maintaining impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40 percent. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant in this solvent extraction test series, providing an REE recovery rate of nearly 99 percent.IntroductionGlobal demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and other strategic metals is increasing rapidly due to their use in a variety of advanced technological applications, with more than 100 kt of rare earth oxides used worldwide on an annual basis. The United States has less than 10 percent of the world reserves of REE mineral deposits, and in 2013 imported more than 60 percent of its rare earth oxides from other countries, mainly China (United States Geological Survey, 2017). China’s institution of export quotas has significantly reduced supply to the United States, raising the urgency of finding new ways of producing REEs and/ or substitutes. Coal combustion byproducts, which are usually discarded as waste materials, are known to contain REEs in low concentrations that could be extracted with a suitable process flow sheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue, considering the short supply of rare earth minerals and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the United States. More than 110 Mt of coal combustion byproducts are produced annually in the process of satisfying the country’s need for electricity (American Coal Ash Association, 2016), and less than 50 percent of these byproducts are being successfully used in various applications, with the remainder dumped as waste materials in landfills and ash ponds."

INTRODUCTION Modern mine management is constantly striving to develop improved mining methods which will not only increase productivity, but will also provide a safer work environment and make the most efficient use of our natural resources. Progress can be seen in this area by tracing mining methods through history. Work that was originally done with hand tools progressed with the age of mechanization to conventional mining, matured to continuous and longwall mining, and the advent of short¬wall mining, a combination of continuous and longwall, has recently been seen. This new method of shortwall mining provides a promising method for safe and ex¬pedient coal extraction. This study focuses upon the planning, design de¬velopment, and operation of the first producing short¬wall unit in the US which was operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine is located in northern West Virginia at Grant Town in the heart of the high volatile Pittsburgh coal seam. Originally opened in 1901, the mine has be¬come one of the largest in the US, encompassing an area of approximately 103.6 sq km (40 sq miles). The seam being mined was the high volatile Pittsburgh seam which ranged in thickness from 1.8 to 2.96 m (6 to 91/2 ft). Three types of mining methods were employed: con¬tinuous mining, longwalling, and shortwalling, with each type accounting for 50%, 30%, and 20% of total pro¬duction, respectively. A total of 630 contract and super¬visory personnel were employed to produce the mine&apos;s designed annual tonnage of 1.8 Mt (2 million st). There were ten producing sections, eight continuous miners, one longwall, and one shortwall, operating a total of 22 unit shifts per day. Eight shafts, varying in depth from 80.2 to 194.2 m (263 to 637 ft) provided entrance to the Pittsburgh coal seam. These shafts were used for ventilation, portaling, coal hoisting, supply, and emergency escape hoisting. Ventilation was achieved by means of three exhaust fans which provided 707.9 m3/s (1.5 million cfm) of air to the mine and removed approximately 141 584 m3 (5 mil¬lion cu ft) of methane per 24 hr period. The room-and-pillar method was used for secondary recovery with designed barrier blocks between panels of 61 m (200 ft) in width. "This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. The launch box was later used for the follow-on 96th Street Station."

The tailings from beneficiation of Florida phosphate ore contain considerable phosphate values. These tailings are currently discharged into large disposal areas. More than three million tons of P2O5 are discarded with the phosphatic slimes (clays) in Florida each year. These phosphatic clays not only create one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also represent a tremendous loss of P2O5. As the quality and quantity of Florida’s phosphate reserves diminish, recovery of phosphate values from these wastes becomes more vital. This will also significantly lengthen the life of these important phosphate resources. Thus, it is the goal of this study is to recover more than 80% of the phosphate values in phosphatic clays. A systematic study to characterize samples taken from inactive disposal area has been conducted. The data suggest that natural segregation takes place in the settling pond. In other words, coarser particles settle closer to the feeding point of the pond. Flotation tests were conducted using the +325 mesh fraction of samples obtained from sites close to the feeding point (sample# A) and further from that point (sample# B) and (sample# C) which is even further away from the feeding point. The results show the following: Sample# A gives the highest grade and recovery, followed by that of # B and then of # C. There is a great potential to upgrade sample# A where concentrates of high grade (68.9-70.1 % BPL or 31.5- 32.1% P2O5) and recovery (~86.6-95.4 %) can be obtained under the investigated operating conditions (1.0 – 2.0 kg/ton sodium silicate and 1.5—3.0 kg/ton collector mixture of fatty acid and fuel oil). The mineralogical and chemical analysis of all samples is presented in this paper for comparison. Only in this paper, the flotation data of (site # A) are discussed below.

The definition of high sulfur coal varies from plant to plant and is subject to changes over time as the environmental regulations change. In plants constructed after September 1978 hardly any domestic coal can currently be burned without the use of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) because a 70 percent reduction in potential S02 emission is mandatory even when the potential emission is less than 0.6 lbs. S02/106 Btu heat input. On the other hand older power plants may in many cases be legally emitting up to 6 lbs. S02/106 Btu or more under some State Implementation Plans (SIP). The Clean Air Act requires, however, that in the long run all stationary sources of S02 pollution must abide by the ceiling of 1.2 lbs S02/10 Btu heat input.. Coals with a potential to exceed this limit must, therefore, be considered as high sulfur coals. Such a definition would be unrealistic because many SIP&apos;s aim at an emission level of 1.8 to 2.0 lbs. SO2/106 Btu for existing plants and a stricter limit does not appear to be enforceable in the next 5 to 10 years. As a result, coals with an emission potential of greater than 2.0 lbs of S02 per 10 Btu heat input are considered high sulfur coals for the purpose of this investigation. Based on this definition and the 1984 actual consumption of coals by U.S. electric utilities (table 1) only 7 out of the 24 coal producing states could be categorized as low sulfur states. The actual S02 pollution, however, depends on total tonnage of a type of coal as well as the sulfur content of the coal. Table 1 also indicates that only 6 states--Kentucky, Illinois, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana-account for nearly 77 percent of S02 pollution potential in the United States. These 6 states have therefore been chosen for this investigation.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). "The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. With ore grades continually decreasing and finer mill feed requirements, it becomes increasingly important to have the capability to handle the larger tonnages economically. With the 10 ft. Standard capable of reducing 1,633 metric tons per hour (1,800 short tons per hour) to 80 percent passing 50 MM (2 inches) and the 10 ft. Short Head following to produce a mill feed of all minus 12 MM (1/2 inch) at a rate of 608 metric tons per hour (670 short tons per hour), we feel significant savings will be realized in installation and operating costs. The largest concentration of cost in the secondary and tertiary crushing stations is the building itself that houses the process equipment. An example of the savings to be attained can be seen from an examination of a 40,820 metric ton (45,000 short ton) per day crushing plant. A total of nine 7 ft. Symons Cone crushers is used to generate 12 MM (1/2 inch) ball mill feed. The average center distance between units is 6.1 M (20 feet) and allowing a 6.1 M (20 feet) nominal distance from the centerline to the wails, the building becomes 61 M (200 feet) long. For this production rate, four 10 ft. Symons Cone crushers would be required. With the 10 ft. crushing plant requiring a center distance spacing of 7.6 M (25 feet), the building length totals approximately 38 M (125 feet). Construction costs vary depending on location, but a reduction in building length from 61 M (200 feet) to 38 M (125 feet) will result in estimated savings of between $2,500,000 and S4,000,000. While the 10 ft. Symons Cone has been involved in a number of feasibility studies for some time, the Process Machinery Division of Rexnord commenced detail design work on the 10 ft. Cone crusher in 1972. For comparison purposes, the 10 ft. and 7 ft. capacities are given in Table 1.

Introduction Trapper mine is a dip-line strip coal mine, located about 10 km (6 miles) southwest of Craig, CO. The mine provides the Craig Generating Station, operated by Colorado-Ute, with about 2 Mt (2.3 million st) of coal annually. The Trapper mine is situated on a hillside that climbs in elevation from 2 to 2.5 km (6500 to 7400 ft) at average grade of 15%. The coal seams dip at about 16% down-grade and they outcrop near the top of the hillside. They exceed maximum stripping depth in 1 to 1.7 km (3500 to 5500 ft) of pit length. Stripping in the three existing pits is performed with three Page 752 23 m3 (30 cu yd) walking draglines. Two of the pits are currently being cast blasted. Until the active cut, the Derringer pit was cast blasted only where the lower mined seam exceeded stripping capabilities and the pit was a single seam operation. Now, a 9-m (30-ft) interburden bench has been incorporated into the stripping plan. This bench protects the first seam of coal from shear when the overburden is cast blasted. The cast blasted section of the 1.6 km (53,000 ft) long pit has been increased from the 457 m (1500 ft) casted previ¬ously to 1 km (3500 ft). High speed films show the coal losses due to shear of the blast are minimal. The pit width in Derringer pit is 61 m (200 ft). This is necessary for efficient spoil side stripping of a relatively thin interburden in the two-seam section of the pit. The Enfield pit is entirely cast blasted. The single seam pit is 46 m (150 ft) wide, 1.1 km (3600 ft) long, and varies from 15 and 46 m (50 and 150 ft) in overburden depth. Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.
