This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.

Accumulations of microorganisms in the in-situ leaching environment are believed responsible for plugging of the orebody and thus decreasing uranium extraction. To assess the contribution of microbial growth to this problem, packed columns of ore and core specimens were leached in the laboratory. Samples collected at four in-situ uranium mining operations revealed pseudomonads, xanthomonads, Bacillus sp. and Micrococcus sp. in numbers of 105 cfu/ml. These microorganisms, inoculated into simulated leaching conditions, decreased permeability in two uranium ores by one order of magnitude in 20 days. Hydrogen peroxide (0.2 g/l) alleviated microbial plugging in the laboratory. Periodic injection of hydrogen peroxide through the production well into the orebody may reduce microbial plugging problems in the field.

The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user's computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to separate the F from byproduct Zn concentrates obtained from fluorspar (CaF2) production, as part of the Bureau's effort to devise efficient, environmentally acceptable technology for recovering Zn from resources considered undesirable by Zn producers. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was found to be effective in F removal, while ammonium carbonate [(NH4)2C031 was not. The most important variables for reducing the necessary residence time were found to be temperature and agitation. Optimum leaching conditions were 75° C and 500 r/min for 2 h at 40 pct solids with 0.2 g acid per gram of concentrate, which resulted in a 98.3-pct F extraction. Zinc losses during F removal were in the range of 2 to 3.3 pct. Other elements such as Fe, Cd, Ca, and Cu were also partially dissolved. About 93 pct of the F was removed from the leach solution by neutralization and precipitation with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. Additional treatment might be necessary to limit the buildup of soluble elements in the recycled leach solution.

Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). Operations involving the processing of coal, oxygen, and steam into synthesis gas by means of two pressure-type gasifiers have demonstrated the effect of heat loss and operating variables on carbon gasified and oxygen and coal requirements. Carbon gasified is the fraction of carbon in the coal that is converted to gas. Oxygen and coal requirement is the quantity of each that is needed to produce a unit volume (M std. c.f.) of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Operating pressure of the gasifiers ranged from 150 to 300 p.s.i.g. and coal was fed at 200 to 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. of reaction-zone space. Oxygen-to-coal ratios were 8.5 to 10.5 std. c.f./lb. Heat loss and residence time have opposite effects on carbon gasified; increasing the heat loss decreases the carbon gasified, but increasing the residence time (by raising the operating pressure or reducing the coal-feed rate) increases the carbon gasified. The effects of these two factors are difficult to separate because they usually change simultaneously. A comparison of the results obtained from the operation of two gasifiers with different levels of heat loss, however, permitted the effect of heat loss to be separated from that of pressure and coal-feed rate. When the results were deter- mined on the basis of constant heat loss, increase of the residence time increased the carbon gasified until the reaction virtually had come to completion. For example, at 150 p.s.i.g., decreasing the coal-feed ratio from 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. to 200 lb./hr./cu.ft. substantially increased the carbon gasified. At 300 p.s.i.g., however, changing the coal-feed rate had little effect on the carbon gasified because the reaction had almost reached completion and further increase in residence time resulted only in a negligible change.

The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. S. Department of Commerce , Washington , D, C , Eckardt points out that the normal source of zinc dust is the blue powder of the zinc retorts , which decreases in volume every year owing to technologic improvements in zinc smelting. The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation. The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nev., hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten that cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydro-metallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hours, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of Na2C03 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution-to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hours, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 wt-pct W03. The pregnant solution contained 11 g/l W03.

The preparation of tungsten carbide by molten-salt electrolysis was investigated. Sodium tungstate in the electrolyte and carbon from the graphite anode were the source materials, Optimum results were obtained with an electrolyte consisting of 83 mole-percent sodium chloride and 5.7 mole-percent each of sodium tungstate, sodium metaborate, and sodium hydroxide; a temperature of 1,000° to 1,025° C; an anode current density of 37 amp/dm2 or less; and an initial cathode current density of 150 amp/dm2. The yield was approximately 0.45 g/amp hr. The electrolytic tungsten carbide product contained approximately 5.4 weight-percent combined carbon as compared to 6.1 weight-percent for pure tungsten carbide. Microhardness of the electrolytic tungsten carbide, determined with a 50-gram load, varied from 3,480 to 3,970 dph. The material was friable and could be ground in a laboratory ball mill to less than 400-mesh particle size.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

As part of its goal of maintaining an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines has studied the removal of iron from simulated aluminum nitrate leach liquors by solvent extraction. Iron must be removed from aluminum nitrate liquor produced by leaching calcined kaolinitic clay with HN03 to reduce the iron level in alumina to less than 0.02 wt-pct Fe203 for use in reduction cells. The parameters reported are for (1) extracting iron from a feed containing 1.5 g/l Fe with di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA), (2) stripping loaded organic phase with 20-pct HCI, and (3) water washing of loaded and stripped organic phase. Recommended operating conditions are two extraction stages using 15 vol-pct EHPA in kerosene and three stripping stages using 20-pct HCI. Results are also given for tests using other extractants and stripping agents.

The thermodynamic properites of petalite (Li2A12Si8O20) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydro-fluoric acid solution calorimetry. The values from the elements and from the oxides are ?Hf°298.15 = 2,335.8 ± 3.0 kcal/mole and ?H°295 (from oxides) = -50.60 ± 1.20 kcal/mole. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 10.69 to 302.11 K. The derived standard entropy is S°298.15 = 111.0 ± 1 cal/deg-mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper block calorimetry from 298 K to 1,193.6 K. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of the measurements. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature from the elements and constituent oxides. The Gibbs energy of formation is ?G°f298.15 = 2,203.8 kcal/mole.

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for fabricating Sm-Co permanent magnets. This method consisted of arc-melting, crushing and grinding the alloy, alining and pressing the powder, and sintering the green compacts. Results indicated that the optimum composition was 36.7±0.3 weight-percent Sm and 63.3±0.3 weight-percent Co. This composition was obtained by blending together Sm2C07 and SmCo5. The maximum values exper¬imentally obtained were MHC = 27.4 kOe, BHc = 7,510 Oe, Br = 7,810 G, and (BH)max = 15.1 MGOe. The optimum sintering temperatures and grinding times for maximum MHc and (BH)max were determined. Lowering the grinding temperature from 0° C to -60° C resulted in a significant increase of magnetic properties.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 5,100 acre (2,065 ha) Rubicon RARE II area (No. 5026) in the El Dorado National Forest (fig. 1). Work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for mineral resources in the area is low. Samples from small gravel deposits along the Rubicon River and from favorable structures in the area contained smart amounts of economic minerals. A Tertiary river channel near the north area boundary contains gold values as much as $137.60 per cu yd ($180 per cu m) [(gold at $400 per troy oz ($12.86 per g)]. The channel does not cross the study area. Energy resource potential, including oil, gas, or geothermal, does not exist in this geologic environment.

This paper, which describes the practice of milling custom ore, in addition to that produced under company and lease operations in the Tom Reed mines, is one of a series 'being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. LOCATION The mill is in Oatman, adjacent to the Benjamin Harrison shaft of the Tom Reed Gold Mines Co., in the foothills on the western slope of the Black Mountains, western Mohave County. The railroad shipping point is Kingman, Ariz., 25 miles northeast of Oatman. Paved highway U. S. 66 passes by the mill. The altitude is approximately 2,700 feet.
