"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mining substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1975, to December 31, 1979. The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. The Petrographic Section of the Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., annually examines thousands of minerals and rocks. Samples are received from mining, engineers, prospectors, and government agencies, both State and Federal. During the past 2 years certain uncommon minerals have been identified in the samples submitted. Eleven occurrences have been selected for reporting in detail. These selections were made because in most cases a new locality is involved. The data reported are the result of application of the latest techniques, and widely disseminated references concerning each mineral have been added for completeness. Several occurrences have been described by other investigators; in those cases new data have been supplied to supplement the already published information on these occurrences. No uranium-bearing minerals have been included; they will be treated in another paper. The Bureau of Mines does not make chemical analyses or assays for individuals or firms In direct competition with private laboratories. Mineral¬ogical examinations, however, are made for prospectors and the general public. Such examinations a call surface to determine whether the sample in question has possible commercial value. If it has apparent value, the sender is so informed, and suggestions as to its .Arc, development and marketing are offered. The latest scientific apparatus is available to aid in identification. The apparatus includes microscopes, both wide-field and polarizing, a Bunsen-type spectroscope for visual observation of the Zinc and band spectra of many elements, differential thermal apparatus for the examination of hydrous material, apparatus for cutting and mounting either thin sections for study in transmitted or polished surfaces for reflected-light studies, and a high-intensity magnetic separator for concentrating minerals according to their magnetic susceptibility. Also, available, but not an integral part of the Section, are several laboratory-type Geiger counters, a grating spectrograph, and X-ray diffraction apparatus. If need be, all of these tools may be employed to identify a mineral or rock.

A new record in accident prevention was made by the metal-mining a industry of the United States in 1938, as signalized by a lower fatality rate than in any previous year. The rate was less than half as high as in 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. A good safety record was also established in the prevention of nonfatal injuries, as the injury rate was lower than in any other years except 1931 to 1935, a 5-year period notable for its unusually low injury rates. Employment was more limited in 1938 than in 1937, both in number of men employed and total number of man-hours worked. The number of workdays per man also was smaller than in 1937. Operating companies reported that 7,233 mines were active in 1938 or some part of the year and that the total number of men employed was 103,027. This figure represents the summation of the average number of men employed as reported by the companies, the average for each mine being that for the period during which the mine was active. The number of employees at all mines in 1938 was 15,402 less than in 1937. Reports covering all mines indicated a total of 188 million man-hours worked during the year, or 21 percent less than the nearly 240 million man-hours worked in 1937. In the performance of this work accidents occurred that resulted in the death of 156 employees and the injury of 1.2,722, each injured employee being disabled for more than the remainder of the clay on which he was hurt.. The fatality rate for 1938 was 0.83 per million man-hours worked, which was 9 percent more favorable than the rate of 0.91 for 1937. Nonfatal injuries occurred at the rate of 67.61 per million man-hours worked, an improvement of 10 percent compared with the injury rate of 75.37 for 1937.

With production of coal per man-hour of work highest in history, the coal mines of the United States established a lower accident-frequency4 rate in 1942 than in any year since 1930, the first for which the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, collected complete reports of nonfatal as well as fatal injuries. Reports from mine operators and State mining departments showed that 530,861 men were employed in and about coal mines during the calendar year 1942. This number does not include office employees or coke-oven workers. The figure represents a decrease of 15,831 men from the previous year, owing to losses of men to the military services and to more lucrative employment in the munitions and other industries. The loss of men was offset to some degree by an increase in the number of days of mine activity and the average number of hours of work per man during the year. The volume of work done during 1942 was 910 million man-hours, 11 percent more than in 1941. The average employee worked 243 days, 30 days more than in 1941. Production reached the unprecedented total of 640 million short tons, an increase of 12 percent over 1941; 582 million tons came from the bituminous fields of the United States and 58 million tons from the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania. To produce this quantity of coal 1,471 men sacrified their lives, and 69,564 men suffered nonfatal injuries that disabled them for more than the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred. The nonfatal injuries were divided into three groups: 65 caused permanent total disability, 2,045 caused permanent partial disability, and 67,454 caused temporary disability of 1 day or more but did not result in the loss of, or permanent loss of use of, any part of the body.

This paper is the twelfth of a series on smelting in the lead blast furnace and the fifth dealing with blast-furnace gases. It was noted in Report of Investigations 2957 that the gases evolved from the top of the lead blast furnace at Tooele were similar in composition to those from the top of an iron blast furnace. It was noted in Report of Investigations 3095 that at Kellogg, where a smaller percentage of coke on charge and shorter stock column were employed, the gases evolved were much less reducing. At times there was a considerable amount of oxygen in the top gases at the second plant. More SO2 was also evolved from sulphides in the charge. Then operations were conducted as at Kellogg, the gases were alternately reducing and oxidizing. This paper deals with the gases evolved in smelting a charge containing more zinc than at either of the other two plants with about the same amount of coke as was used at Kellogg,: To compare other factors influencing the composition of the gases, it may be noted that at Tooele the approximate height of the charge column was 15 feet, at Kellogg 9 feet and at Trail 13 feet. The furnaces have about the -same cross-sectional area- tog. The furnaces at Tooele are about 6 inches wider at the tuyeres, being 54 inches wide against 48 for the other two plants. At Tooele and Kellogg the furnaces are fed at the top from bottom-dump cars. At Trail the charges are dumped from Decauville cars (bottom cars which dump when tilted), which run on tracks placed on both sides of the blast furnaces. The hoods through which the waste gases are conducted are directly above the shafts of the furnaces. The flues for removing the effluent gases lead off from under the charge floor at Tooele and Kellogg. (Charging and distribution of the feed in the furnace covered later in a rate paper of series.)

To improve mine health and safety conditions, there is need for a portable instrument that mine inspectors can use routinely for rapidly checking concentrations of dust in mine atmospheres. On October 23, 1969, Stanford Research Institute was authorized by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct a study aimed at developing such an instrument under Contract No. H0100186. The results of that study are reported in Technical Report No. 1, "Development of Portable Instrument For Measuring Coal Mine Dust Concentration," August 1970. In that study it was demonstrated on bench-scale that a near-forward optical scattering device gives a linear correlation between mass concentration and optical readout over a range of 2 to 200 mg/m3 with excellent reproducibility. The same correlation was obtained for the Respirable* dust fraction of three different coal dusts within ± 10% and an extreme spread of ± 30%. Based on these results a prototype instrument was designed which was expected to meet all the necessary requirements of a portable instrument for mine use. Because of the excellent results obtained, a further study was authorized by the Bureau of Mines on May 10, 1971 under Contract No. H0111688. The prime objective of this study was to build, calibrate, and deliver to the Bureau of Mines two prototype instruments based on the design previously developed. The emphasis was to be on providing instruments which would meet certain minimum standards of size, weight, response time, sensitivity, ruggedness, reproducibility, permissibility, and cost (ultimate); optimization of the design was to be considered only insofar as it would not significantly delay the development. One instrument was to be delivered after initial calibration of both instruments with Coal Dust PGH. The second instrument was to be used for further calibration with a number of other coal and rock dusts and for assessing other relevant performance characteristics. This report summarizes all the results of this second study.

"Several experiments have been carried out in efforts to evaluate qualitatively a variety of electrolytes for refining bismuth. Most extensive work was done with the basic tartrate, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluosilicic acid electrolytes. Deposits that are smooth and adherent can be obtained from these three electrolytes if low cathode current densities are employed. All three electrolytes were effective in purifying crude bismuth considerably, with additional purification indicated in each instance by a reelectrolysis step.With the basic tartrate electrolyte best results were obtained when the electrolyte was at 40° C. and contained at least 100 grams of bismuth per liter. An apparent disadvantage was depletion of bismuth from this electrolyte, causing the deposits to become spongy and nonadherent.The hydrochloric acid electrolyte had the greatest tendency to yield rough, dendritic deposits. Best deposits were obtained at cathode-current densities below 2 amperes per square decimeter. A small amount of glycerin helped to produce a smoother deposit, and adding sulfuric acid or methyl sulfuric acid retarded the deposition of impurities. Very good results were obtained in electrowinning bismuth from a bismuth trichloride-hydrochloric acid electrolyte.Smooth and adherent deposits were obtained from a hydrofluosilicic acid electrolyte, with very good refining as regards lead and silver impurities; however, higher reagent costs and slow decomposition of the electrolyte have discouraged its use.INTRODUCTIONMethods of recovering bismuth from ores and byproducts were underdeveloped for many years because of the limited uses for bismuth, the pharmaceutical industry being the chief consumer. In the past decade or so additional uses for bismuth, particularly in the metallurgical field, have brought about increased demand for the metal with the result that bismuth is being recovered from byproducts that were once discarded. In addition to such uses as low-melting alloys, solders, bearings, die setting, etc., some interest has been indicated in bismuth as a possible coolant for nuclear reactors. The advent of ductile bismuth and bismuth-alloy thermocouple wire has contributed greatly to temperature measurement, particularly in the below-zero range."

The function of the Metallurgical Division is to conduct investigations relating to the treatment of mineral products from the state in which they are mined to the refined metal or other unfabricated product. These investigations include scientific and practical studies of ore dressing, covering the crushing and grinding of ores, separation by gravity, flotation, and magnetic methods; the hydrometallurgical treatment of ores, including cyanidation and amalgamation of the precious metals; the smelting and refining of copper, lead, and zinc, as well as the rare metals; and steel-melting practices from the raw ore to the finished steel. The object of this work is to conserve natural resources and eliminate waste by furnishing information on current methods of metallurgical practice, making fundamental studies of metallurgical processes, and developing new processes to the point of demonstrating their practicability. The Division is made up of sections devoted to the several phases of this work, each section being beaded by an investigator capable of supervising his particular work. The work is carried on at the experiment stations and field offices or in the field, whichever seems test suited for the work in hand. The following projects should be mentioned as particularly outstanding among those consummated successfully during the year: 1. Application of the type of chemicals known in the textile industry as wetting-out agents to flotation and agglomeration of ores, particulary soluble salts such as sodium and potassium chloride which must be treated in saturated brine. 2. Demonstration of a linear relation between surface and coercive force in magnetic minerals and its application to magnetic separation and to the determination of grinding efficiencies and other metallurgical data which require surface determination at very fine sizes. 3. Pilot-plant demonstration of the practicability of the reduction of iron ore by natural gas and conversion of this direct iron into steel by direct melting and by forging and rolling before melting. The structure and properties of the iron so produced were studied in detail. This report covers the fiscal year July 1, 1934, to June 30, 193b.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

The Glacier Bay subarea is that part of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) within Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (GBNP). It is the western portion of the JMD and consists of the land between the Fairweather Range crest and the Takhinsha and Chilkat Ranges crests (excluding that land east of Excursion Inlet.) Figure B-1 shows the area. It is bounded on the north by the Alaska-British Columbia International boundary, to the south by Cross Sound and Icy Strait, and contains Glacier Bay. During 1975 -1977 the Bureau conducted a detailed study of the occurrences, prospects, and deposits in GBNP (B_4).2 This work was in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577). As a follow up to this earlier Bureau work, limited studies were conducted, during 1985 and 1986, as part of the JMD study. This report covers the most important aspects of the earlier studies and the 1985 and 1986 studies. ACCESS The Glacier Bay area may be reached through Gustavus airport, a paved strip which is serviced by scheduled jet airliners in the summer and air taxi services year-round. The airport is connected to Bartlett Cove (GBNP headquarters) by an all-weather road. No other roads exist in the area except a skid road to the LeRoy Mine and mill in the Reid Inlet area. Much of the Glacier Bay area is accessible through the salt water inlets and fjords which are part of Glacier Bay. Cruise ships, charter boats, and fishing boats visit these inlets and fjords during the summer months. Elevations within the area range from sea level to over 15,000 feet in the rugged Fairweather Mountain Range. More remote areas are accessible by small boat, foot, or helicopter. Glacier ice is a year-round hazard to navigation in Glacier Bay, and during the winter months some of the more northerly inlets are frozen.

Water infiltration control techniques are designed to reduce the total volume of water entering an underground mine, and thus, reduce the volume of mine water discharge During the development of underground mines, water may be encountered in various quantities This water must be pumped from the mine during active mining, and in many situations, the weight of water removed will be more than the total weight of mineral extracted After abandonment of the mine, infiltrating water either floods the mine workings or discharges from the mine (27, 127) Infiltrating water may enter underground mines from above, below, or laterally through adjacent rock strata Earth fractures such as faults, joints, and roof fractures resulting from surface subsidence are commonly primary causes of water entrance Into abandoned underground mines Factors affecting the quantity of water entering a mine will be the depth of the mine, location of water bearing strata, and ground water flow patterns Investigations of the quantity of water entering underground coal mines have found the average rate of infiltration to range from approximately 6,262 to 10,280 liters per hectare per day (670 to 1,100 gal/acre/day) (27) Water flowing through underground mines flushes pollutants from the mine and may result in their discharge to the environment A reduction in the amount of flow usually results in a reduction in total pollution load discharging from the mine The techniques discussed in this section can be used to reduce the volume of surface and groundwater available to enter the mine system and transport pollutants The selection of a control technique will depend upon the characteristics of the mine system and the expected cost effectiveness of the technique In order for water infiltration control to be effective in controlling mine drainage pollution, the reduction in mine water flow must not be accompanied by an increase in concentration of pollutants (127) REFERENCES 2, 27, 51, 58, 127, 132

The present paper collects and discusses thermodynamic data relating to metal carbides and nitrides, with the view of obtaining usable heat and free energy of formation relationships. Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. To facilitate increase in the rate of coal production the Bureau of Mines conducted a study several years ago, on the basis of which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives in single-hole blasting was raised from 1.5 to 3.0 pounds. Further demands for accelerated production led to consideration of multiple blasting in coal, a practice that is deemed hazardous and is not permitted by most States in this country. In multiple blasting, 10 to 20 pounds of explosive or more may be detonated in a coal face within a fraction of a second, which might result in blown-out or blown-through shots with possible ignition of gas or coal dust. As experimental evidence was lacking, in January 1949 an investigation was undertaken in the Experimental coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., principally to study and compare with single blasting the condi-tions under which simultaneous multiple blasting and particularly multiple short-delay blasting may be practiced without danger of igniting gas or coal dust in mines. The first report on this subject was presented at the last international conference of mine safety research. Since that time numerous additional experiments have been made; because of other pressing problems the work has been brought temporarily at least to a conclusion. This paper is the second report on the problem. It does not contain a detailed description of all test conditions and test arrangements, many of which were described 2 years ago in part 1 (now available as Report of Investigations 4868), but the conclusions are based on the entire study. A more complete review, which will incorporate data from the entire investigation, is being prepared as a Bureau of Mines bulletin. Up to the present time, short-delay blasting of coal in commercial mines has been introduced only experimentally in Washington and in a few mines elsewhere. If the system is adopted more generally, new problems may arise, and the study may have to be reopened.

Surface mining drastically alters the ecological characteristics of the area disturbed and in some cases has a decided effect on surrounding areas. Vegetation is removed, topographic features and characteristics are changed, and the original geologic overburden profiles are destroyed. Spoil banks generally are a heterogeneous mixture of rock fragments, rock particles, and soil-sized material derived from the overburden strata. With proper mining techniques, the various strata can be partially or completely segregated. Segregation of over- burden material offers the opportunity to bury the toxic, acid, or salt-pro producing strata under growth supporting material. In some situations, lower strata may have more desirable characteristics than surface material and can be placed near or on the surface. For example, limestone strata appear in some lower overburden profiles that have shale and/or sandstone near the surface. Also, some lower strata have higher nutrient levels that have been leached from the surface. Experience has shown that natural revegetation is a very slow process on strip mined areas. Native vegetation may not be compatible with the environment on the mined areas, for example : 1. Low nutrients in the spoil. 2. Toxic spoils (very acid or highly alkaline ). 3. Surrounding vegetation may be of the climax type and may not have pioneer- or primary-invader-type species present. 4. The seed source may be to far away from the adjacent mined areas. Early attempts to revegetate strip-mined lands with trees also proved to be unsatisfactory as they did not provide the initial ground cover required to stabilize the spoil. Erosion control with trees only may take up to 10 years before the canopies close and an effective cover is established. They are slow to form soil profiles and do not provide effective chemical pollution control until long after planting. A quick growing cover of herbaceous species is necessary to obtain quick stabilization and initial protection against erosion by reducing runoff and rain-drop splash. In the course of its investigations of the fuel resources in the United States and of the methods by which these resources could be utilized with greatest efficiency, the United States Geological Survey tested a great variety of coals and lignites as gas-producer fuel. Early in these testa it was found that many factors controlling the formation of gas in the generating chamber of the producer and, consequently, having a direct bearing on the management of producer-gas plants, were not as well understood as they should be. The Geological Survey therefore took up a detailed investigation of the chemical and physical processes that take place in the producer, keeping in view not only the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the producer as a source of energy, and the ensuing benefits to the public of cheaper power and greater utilization of low-grade fuels, but also the application of the results to the problems of boiler-furnace operations. - The Bureau of Mines, to which the testing and analyzing of fuels as carried on by the United States Geological Survey has been transferred, is continuing producer-gas investigations at the testing station at Pittsburg, Pa. Results of the gas-producer tests a made at the coal-testing plant erected at St. Louis, Mo., and of a study of some of the problems° that came up in the tests have been published by the Geological Survey. Results of the tests made at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa., and of further studies of particular problems, will be published by the Bureau of Mines. In the gas producer solid fuel is transformed into more readily combustible gaseous fuel. The transformation is relatively slow and consists of several processes: 1. The distillation of the volatile hydrocarbons from the freshly fired fuel at relatively low temperatures. 2. The combustion of the fuel by its combining with the oxygen of the air forming carbon dioxide (COO. 3. The formation of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (11 3), the essential constituents of producer gas, in accordance with the equations:

During the 9 years ended December 31, 1938, 188 fatalities resulted from preventable accidents in and around the coal mines of Indiana; 173 of these occurred at underground mines and 15 at stripping or open-cut operations. In addition, there may have been other unrecorded fatalities during this period. The two organizations receiving notice of accidental deaths at coal mines in this State are the Division of Mines and Mining and the Indiana Industrial Commission. Only deaths occurring at underground mines employing 10 or more men are reported to the former, as neither strip mines nor underground mines employing fewer than 10 men cone within the purview of the Indiana mining law. The mine inspectors have no Jurisdiction over this latter group of mines and do not inspect them. Fatalities at small "wagon" mines and open-cut operations are supposed to be reported to the Industrial Commission; however, in many instances deaths at small mines are not reported, the only record being a death certificate filed with the county or corporation health officer. Thus, many deaths in small mines escape attention, especially when the victim succumbs some time after the injury was received. The data presented here on fatalities in Indiana, during the past 5 years include several instances in which the only record available is a death certificate; possibly others have been overlooked. From 1934 to 1937 the fatality record was progressively worse, that of the larger underground mines in 1937 being more than twice the average for these mines for the previous 4 years and only slightly less than twice the average for all mines, including open-cut operations. The increase in deaths during 1937 was due to two explosions, with 20 fatalities in one and 2 in the other. The number of deaths in the larger underground mines was considerably less in 1938 than in the previous 4 years, but there was no improvement in the number of fatalities at the small mines, or at open-cut mines.
