The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of nee' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gal¬lons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain this high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ore near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand for new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements ill the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

Talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate having the chemical formula H2Mg3 (SiO8 ) 4 ; it is often called steatite, soapstone or potstorie, and by the trade names talc clay, agalite, asbestine, and verdolite. The term talc may be used to include all forms of the pure mineral, whereas steatite denotes particularly the massive, compact variety, and soapstone the impure, massive form that often contains only 50 per cent of talc. Merrill 1 says: The name soapstone is given to dark-gray and greenish talcose rocks, which are soft enough to be readily cut with a knife, and which have a pronounced soapy or greasy feeling; hence the name. Such rocks are commonly stated in textbooks to be compact forms .of steatite, or talc, but as the writer has elsewhere pointed out, and as shown by the analyses here given, few of them are even approximately pure forms of this mineral, but all contain varying proportions of chlorite, mica, and tremolite, together with perhaps unaltered residuals of pyroxene, granules of iron ore, iron pyrites, quartz, and, in seams and veins, calcite and magnesian carbonates. When pure, talc is soft, having a hardness of 1, but when impure or when it grades into its varieties, the hardness increases to 3 or 4. Talc ranges in color from pure white and silvery white through gray, green, apple green, gray green to dark green, nlso yellow, brown, or reddish when impure. It is rarely, if ever, found in wellformed crystals, but often occurs in foliated plates or in fibrous aggregates. It is commonly compact or massive or in fine granular aggregates. Several analyses of talc from different regions ·are given in Table 1. Talc has several varieties, the most important of which is Rensselaerite. This variety, found in a small area near Gouverneur, St. La.wrence County, N. Y., is a hard, fibrous, -waxlike mineral having the same chemical composition as talc, but lacking its softness and its peculiar greasy feel. Its hardness and its peculiar fibrous form, even when ground, have made its grinding and separation a separate problem. In addition to the varieties of talc and soapstone, the mineral pyrophyllite or agalmatolite, a hydrous silicate of alumina, with the formula H2Al2 (Si08 ), is also mined and sold as talc. It resembles talc in color, feel, luster, and structure, and may be successfully substituted for true talc for most uses. In this paper it will be considered as one of the commercial forms of talc.

"INTRODUCTION Over the past several years a new type of cascade impactor that utilizes small nozzle diameters (micro-orifice nozzles) has been under development (Kuhlmey et al., 1981; Marple et al., 1981). The small nozzle dimensions allow for particles to be collected as small as 0.024 µm aerodynamic diameter on the last stage of the impactor. To obtain a reasonable flow rate of 30 I min - i through the impactor, a large number of nozzles (up to 2000) are required per stage.Furthermore, by locating the nozzles of multi-nozzle stages in a prescribed manner (described in detail by Marple et al., 1981) and rotating the impaction plates relative to the nozzle plates, uniform deposits can be achieved on the impaction plates. As described by Marple et al. (1981), the advantages of a uniform deposit impactor over the conventional impactor that collects particles only beneath stationary nozzles are: (1) maximum use of the impaction substrate surface, reducing both particle bounce (if substrates are greased) and tare weights of the substrates (if particle mass is measured gravimetrically); (2) deposited particles can be analyzed for elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence (Dzubay and Rieke!, 1978); and (3) the pressure in the impactor can be kept relatively high compared to low pressure impactors that depend on a large slip correction to achieve small particle collection (some types of particles may evaporate at low pressures). The work described in this paper investigates two additional advantages of a uniform deposit impactor. These are: (1) the possibility of collecting two separate deposits at one time on one stage for two types of analysis techniques, and (2) the possibility of utilizing piezoelectric quartz crystal impaction plates more effectively by eliminating the deposit location sensitivity nature of the crystals (Schulze-Frohlich, 1981 ).MICRO-ORIFICE UNIFORM DEPOSIT IMPACTOR (MOUDI)A photograph of an eight-stage MOUDI is shown in Fig. 1. Each stage body of the impactor supports the impaction plate for the stage above and the nozzle plate for the stage below as shown in Fig. 2. By rotating alternate stage bodies, while holding the other stage bodies stationary, the impaction plates (or nozzle plates) will be rotated relative to the nozzle plates (or impaction plates).Rotation of the alternate stage bodies is achieved by gears on these bodies that mesh with gears on an electrically driven drive shaft of a rotating mechanism (Fig. 1 ). The alternate stage bodies are restrained from rotation by pins that rest on the drive shaft."

"This paper presents an analysis of preliminary tests on the effect of in-situ and operating parameters on fragmentation of coal using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.l cm x 15.2 cm) were first. subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such. blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with a camera attached to it. Furthermore, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis. The results of the preliminary tests indicated that underground coal cutting can be simulated in the laboratory and the effects of the important parameters, i.e. operating and in-situ parameters, can be studied successfully. INTRODUCTIONThe continuous-mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, which were designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (1). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining .community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

Overexposure to airborne respirable crystalline silica dust can cause disabling or fatal respiratory disease, and mine worker exposure to silica dust continues to be an ongoing occupational health concern. Exposures of surface coal mine rock drillers to respirable crystalline silica are of particular concern. On surface coal mine drills, bailing air flushes the cuttings out of the drill hole. Conveyor belting material is typically used to fabricate a shroud around the drill deck in an effort to contain the drill dust so that it can be captured by a collector. Dust leakage from the drill shroud is usually the worst dust source problem on most drills. The focus of this work is drill shroud dust leakage and the relationships of various drill parameters on this leakage. Experimental data were obtained and used in combination with dimensional analysis to establish these relationships. In general, it is found that airborne respirable dust (ARD) concentrations vary in a direct relationship with shroud leakage area and in an inverse relationship with drill deck cross sectional area and shroud height. This work expands the testing and dimensional analysis previously reported for collector/bailing air flow ratios ranging from 2:1 to 4:1 to include ratios approaching 1:1. A semi empirical mathematical model has been developed and expanded to describe ARD generation on surface coal mine drills. Geometric parameters included are drill deck height and cross sectional area, shroud leakage associated with the deck shroud, and the operational parameters of bailing airflow and dust collector airflow. The relationships can be described by logarithmic functions and yield predictive ARD values, which fall in the range measured on operating drills for collector/bailing air flow ratios greater than 2. However, at values of collector/bailing air flow ratios of approximately 1.1, the amount of ARD shows minimal response, if any, to drill deck shroud improvements that do not result in near perfect seals. This is a condition that can occur in actual operation and is a substantially different result than previously expected and reported. Application of these results should provide mine operators with sufficient information to determine (1) the relative magnitude of their dust emissions, (2) where they should focus their efforts to reduce ARD emissions and (3) the improvement they could reasonably expect to achieve. Given that exposures of surface coal mine rock drillers to respirable crystalline silica are of particular concern, substantial reductions of airborne silica dust during drilling may be estimated and achieved through use of the analysis presented. "The risk of developing silicosis in underground coal miners, tunnel workers and some foundry workers is well-known. These persons generally develop the classic form of the disease over a prolonged period of time. Workers involved in abrasive blasting of bridges and those polishing tombstones have been reported to develop an acute form of silicosis within a few years of commencing exposure. Not well-appreciated is the potential for development of acute silicosis among drillers at surface coal mines. We report the case of a 33-year--old man who worked primarily at surf ace drilling, developed acute silicosis within three years of beginning exposure, and who initially responded dramatically to corticosteroid therapy. CASE REPORTThe patient is a 33-year-old white man who worked as a rock driller at a quarry and also at surface coal mines in western Pennsylvania since 1975. Prior to 1983, much of his work was done with a wet process in which water was applied to reduce dust generation. After 1983 he worked primarily as a driller at a surface coal mine using a dry process. He never wore a respirator. He described the dust as being so dense that he ""couldn't see anything.- In August 1986, he presented to his local physician with a complaint of pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath. A chest x-ray film was obtained showing only a few p and q opacities. He continued working and these symptoms subsided, but the patient noted the onset of progressive weight loss. By May 1987, he had lost approximately 50 lb. In addition, he suffered profound malaise, dyspnea, migratory chest pain and arthralgia, fevers and drenching night sweats.A course of erythromycin therapy given in the hospital resulted in only fleeting improvement. Studies for Legionella and Mycoplasma infections were negative, as was a tuberculin skin test. The patient was transferred to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on June 4, 1987.There was no history of serious medical illness, including tuber¬culosis. The patient admitted to smoking between I and 1 1/2 packages of cigarettes daily for 2 1/2 years prior to May 1987 when he stopped smoking. He denied intravenous drug abuse, homosexual activity or receiving transfusions of blood or blood products.On physical examination the patient was a thin, febrile white man who appeared chronically ill. Bilateral axillary and cervical lymphadenopathy was present. Chest examination showed restricted expansion and bilateral crackles. Examination of the heart and abdomen disclosed no abnormalities."

"IntroductionIn a typical incremental loading test, the AE activity increases rapidly in the initial stage of the loading. It is associated with initial closure under compression of favorably oriented cracks already present, together with sliding of crack faces against each other /1/. After the initial stage, crack closure and movement largely cease and the AE activity drops to a barely detectable level /2/. In the final stage of loading test, cracking associated with the onset of inelastic deformation' occurs, and the rate of AE rapidly increases /3/ indicating an increase in the •number of events associated with higher number of microcracks. To understand better primary fragmentation process, Anderson and Ruzzi conducted tests to identify a practical method of monitoring fracture development in rock, as caused by an excavation tool /4/. They proved that a relationship existed between the AE activity, generated during fracturing and the amount of fracture surface area created.A process of fragmentation, demonstrated by conical bits acting orthogonal to the flat surface of block of coal specimen with and without lateral confining pressure is presented here. The monitoring of AE during the fracturing process of rock/coal has been a very useful indirect method in studying fracture mechanism.Specimen PreparationLarge blocks of Waynesburg coal were obtained from a surface mine. These blocks were then out and molded to approximate dimensions of 25.4 x 25.4 x 15.2 'an (10 x 10 x 6 in.). These specimens were instrumented with three strain gages in a 45 degree rosette. One was mounted parallel to the bedding plane direction, another was tinted at an angle of 45 degree from the bedding plane direction and the third was mounted perpendicular to the bedding .plane direction. Each of the three strain gages were set 5.1 an (2 in.) away from the impact point.Typical Test ProcedureIn a typical experiment, the specimen was placed in the confining chamber.Predetermined equivalent in-situ stresses were applied to the specimen by using two sets of hydraulic cylinders. Two 1 in. thick steel plates ware positioned between the sample and the hydraulic cylinders in order to distribute the pressure uniformly over the whole surface of the specimen. The LVDT null position was adjusted with respect to the coal face. After setting the LVDT, the bit and associated weight was lifted to a predetermined height (equivalent to a predetermined kinetic energy) by a win. The three strain gages were balanced using the signal conditioner and the output was recorded by a 6 channel strip chart recorder. The experimental set-up is shown in Figure 1."

"One phase of the Bureau of Mines' work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To promote the development of such devices the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus3/ gas masks/, supplied-air respirators5/ (hose masks, airline respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), and mechanical-filter respirators6/.Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules.As a prerequisite to such submittal, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been subjected to inspections and tests such as described in the schedules, and that it met those requirements when tested by the manufacturer or his testing agency; and a. statement regarding the nature, adequacy, and continuity of control of the quality of the respirator. If the manufacturer can satisfy these requirements, and if the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets its requirements, a certificate of approval is granted by the Bureau of Mines. The approved devices bear distinguishing marks that indicate that they have been approved, the purpose for which they are approved, and the limitations of their use. If it is found at any time that approved devices purchased in the oven market and tested do not meet the requirements of the schedule, the Bureau may rescind that approval. Lists7/ of approved devices are published periodically for the convenient information of the public.Respiratory equipment may be divided into two main groups: (1). Those that afford protection by removing atmospheric contaminants and (2) those by which a respirable atmosphere from an uncontaminated source is supplied to the wearer.The devices that protect by the removal of contaminants may be divided into two subgroups: (1) Those that protect against gaseous contaminants and (2) those that protect against particulate matter. There may, of course, be combinations of these two.The devices by which a respirable atmosphere is furnished to the wearer also may be divided into two subgroups: (1) The self-contained type, by which the supply of oxygen, or material from which the oxygen can be generated is carried by the wearer, and (2) the hose type, by which air is supplied to the wearer through a hose or tube."

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to develop a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 described laboratory studies of the support properties of conventional steel cable bolts. Part 2 describes the strength characteristics of conventional cables with steel buttons, single and double birdcage cables, and epoxy-coated cables.

The objectives of the research were to determine whether a model health and safety program could be defined in terms which would enable its application to mines of all types, and, if such a model program could be defined, to determine through evaluations in two mining companies whether it would achieve measurable improvements. Volume 1 describes the model, how it was applied in the field and how it was evaluated. This, Volume 2, describes the literature and field research that preceded the model definition.

Volume I This report presents the first national survey of miners' attitudes and opinions about their-work. The goal is to present attitudinal data that bears on coal production. Interviews were conducted in 26 mines with 2,000 miners. High levels of cooperation were exhibited by management, union and the employees. Data are presented about miners' attitudes about general aspects of their work such as pay, supervision, their jobs, etc. Another section of this report reviews opinions about specific aspects of work performance. Recommendations are presented.

A design for a laser-powered optical interferometer, using a specimen whose thermal expansion is to be measured as part of the optical system, was conceived and applied in a prototype dilatometer. The object of thin work was the development of an absolute dilatometer capable of use at elevated temperature, particularly above 1,000° C. The prototype has been operated at temperatures exceeding 1,510° C. Results obtained with this device agree within 2.5 percent with the published data for the coefficient of expansion of columbium.

A gravimetric method for the determination of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and oxygen in blast furnace top gas is described. Nitrogen may be determined directly by volume measurement or by difference. The method is direct, permits continuous as sampling, and provides an averaged analysis over a selected range of sampling intervals from 1/2 to 24 hr or more. Neither expensive equipment nor specialized personnel are required. The method is suitable for routine analysis, and the results compare favorably with those obtained by established methods.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Nicholas County, W. Va. It is one in a series describing coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Almost 5 million tons of coal were produced in Nicholas County, W. Va., in 1960, of which over 2.6 million tons were cleaned in eight preparation plants. It has been estimated that over 6 billion tons remained in the county as of December 31, 1960, in beds 12 inches and more thick.

Under a general program to extend the resources of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines examined the Quien Sabe antimony mine in October 1948. The preliminary evaluation demonstrated that a diamond-drill program was warranted co establish the tenor and persistence of the veins and permit an estimation of antimony reserves. The Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling program on the property from December 1949 to May 1950. Ten holes aggregating 2,483 feet were drilled. Nine of the holes encountered antimony-bearing vein material.

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the theoretical stress distribution in the vicinity of explosively expanded rock bolt anchors independent of their bolts. Plane-strain solutions applicable to this problem were obtained by combining the field pressure with the uniform pressure that would be produced by vertically placed anchors having 2-, 3-, and 4-foot spacings. High rock stress which would be produced by an anchor was localized, as would be expected from St. Venant's effect, and increased as the field pressure decreased.
