GEOPHYSICAL investigations based on radioactivity have been applied to the earth's crust for the purpose of discovering bodies rich in radioactive substances, or for the location of solutions with high emanation or radioactive-salt content, or for the detection of oil, which, in virtue of colloidal properties, has strong powers of radioactive absorption. RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES Radioactive substances are distributed in all rocks, waters, and gases in the earth's crust in small quantities. Granites and similar acidic rocks are richest in uranium and thorium, two chief radioactive substances; yet the quantities present in such rocks are of the order 10-12g., this concentration being expressed in grams per gram of the whole substance per cubic centimeter. In granites the uranium yields, according to Haddock, 3 X 10-12 g. of radium per gram of rock. In basalts the uranium yields 1.19 X 10-12 g. per gram per cubic centimeter. Of thorium the granites yield -2 X 10-5 g. per gram of rock; the basalts, 0.77 X 10-5 g. per gram. Certain series of alkalis of low atomic weight, like potassium and rubidium, show weak radioactivity; this property has no significance so far for geological research. The uranium is esti-mated indirectly from the electrical properties of one of its derivatives as a -gas (emanation) into which it is transformed. The thorium is expressed directly, though it is measured as a derivative, thorium emana-tion. There is a measure for the gaseous radium emanation, the curie, which is that quantity of radium emanation, or radon, which stands in equilibrium with 1 g. of radium. The concentration of the emanation is the Mache unit corresponding to 3.64 X 10-10 curie per liter. When gases become permeated by alpha, beta, and gamma rays, plus and minus ions are produced in them by the decomposition of neutral gas molecules, and under the influence of an electrical field these ions are given opposite motions. The measurement of the alpha rays and the bisection thicknesses of the beta and gamma rays is a means of analyzing unknown radioactive substances. These rays accompany the disintegration of radioactive substances and arise from "spontaneous internal changes

Heats of solution of gold and copper in dilute Au-Cu-Sn alloys have been determined using a liquid metal solution calorimeter. The self-interaction coefficient, Au - has been calculated at constant copper concentrations and n cu has likewise been determined at constant gold contents. Good experimental agreement is obtained between the interaction coefficients and nAu Cc thus demonsbating the reliability of the measured heat values. The measured data are compared with the Predictions of certain solution models. In previous publications,1,2 the results of calori-metric investigations of dilute Ag-Au-Sn and Ag-Cu-Sn alloys have been presented. The present work on the Au-Cu-Sn system concludes a program of studies of enthalpy interaction coefficients in dilute alloys of the Group IB metals with tin. Since the definition and derivation of an enthalpy interaction coefficient has been discussed previously,1,2 no restatement of this theory will be presented here. From the determination of the partial heat of solution of gold and copper in ternary alloys of various copper and gold contents, values of the interaction coefficients can be calculated. These coefficients give an insight into the various solute interactions that occur in the liquid solutions since changes in their magnitude and sign reflect bonding changes that are taking place in alloys of varying solute contents. EXPERIMENTAL Details of the design and operation of the liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this work may be found in a paper by Poo1.3 For the present studies copper of 99.999 pct purity was supplied by American Smelting and Refining Co., gold of 99.999 pct purity by A. D. Mackay, Inc., and tin of 99.99 pct purity by Baker Chemical Co. At the commencement of each series of experimental drops, a tin solvent bath consisting of between 70 and 90 g of the pure metal was inserted in the calorimeter. The weight of the bath was accurately determined and to it were added appropriate amounts of gold or copper to give alloys of the desired composition. For determinations of approximately 0.0015 g-atom samples of Cu were used and for measurements of ?HAu approximately 0.0025 g-atom additions of Au. The heat capacity of the bath was determined at regular intervals during a series of drops using tin calibration samples. Measurements were made of the heat of solution of copper in alloys containing a constant 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 mole fraction of Au, respectively, in order to determine ?HCu in each alloy, and the same mole fractions of copper were used to determine equivalent values for nAu at constant copper concentrations. The composition of the bath was maintained at the desired constant gold or copper content by making calculated additions of the appropriate solute throughout the experiments. The limiting values ?HAu in alloys of constant copper content and of %c, in alloys of constant gold content were studied as a function of the mole fraction of copper or gold respectively in order to determine and nCu. Heat content and heat capacity data used in calculating values of ?ºHAu and ?HCu at the experimental temperature of 720°K were obtained from Hultgren et a1.4 ' RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Determinations of ?HAu. The partial heat of solution of gold in pure tin as a function of gold concentration was determined in the previous study of dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys1 and can be represented by the least-squares expression: ?HAu(l) =-8075 + 2413xAu [l] which is valid between XAu= 0.00 and xAu = 0.05. The standard error in the constant term, which represents the partial heat of solution of gold at infinite dilution in tin,?HºAu(l)is 35 cal per g-atom, while the standard deviation of the slope, which represents n Au is ± 619 cal per- agtom. Corresponding expressions for ?HAu(l) in alloys containing constant mole fractions of 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 copper were obtained from the data listed in Table I and are themselves given in Table II. Fig. 1 illustrates the partial heat of solution of gold as a function of its concentration in each of the alloys. For the four alloys of constant copper concentration, the values obtained for ?HºAU(l) (in order of increasing copper content) are -8141 i 36 cal per g-atom, -8210 ± 42 cal per g-atom, -8202 ± 46 cal per g-atom and -8268 ± 51 cal per g-atom. The corresponding values of the self-interaction coefficient, n Au, for these alloys are 3103 * 644 cal per g-atom, 2425 ± 676 cal per g-atom, 2574 * 717 cal per g-atom and 2523 ± 899 cal per g-atom. In Fig. 2 these values of n Au are plotted as a function of the copper content of the alloys and are seen to remain approximately constant within the experimental limits. The addition of increasing, small amounts of copper to dilute binary Au-Sn alloys thus has no apparent effect on Au-Au interactions in these dilute liquid solutions, although more exothermic values of ?HºAu(l) do result from an increase in the copper content of the alloys. Ti6NileSi7)G is known to be cubic, with 116 atoms in the unit cell. In the present work four new G sili-cides were found with other transition elements and five G germanides. The titanium-group elements are very efficient in forming G phases. The vanadium -group elements are somewhat less efficient, and the chromium-group elements do not form any. Cobalt can replace nickel in most cases, but it is somewhat less efficient. Iron was not found to form any G phases. Germanium is somewhat less efficient than silicon. The (TiNiSi)E phase has been previously identified by Westbrook. However, its crystal structure has not been determined. In the present work the E phase was found to have an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a. = 7.02, bo = 5.18, co = 11.11A. A large number of other E phases were found at the same stoicheometric ratio in ternary systems of silicon and germanium with transition elements. Lattice parameters similar to those for TiNiSi were measured. The number of atoms per unit cell is estimated at 30 to 36. The vanadium-group elements are somewhat more efficient in forming the E phase than the titanium-group elements. Chromium-group elements were not found to form any E phases. Cobalt is somewhat less efficient than nickel, and iron is less efficient than cobalt. Germanium is not as efficient as silicon. ThE ternary silicide designated as G-phase was first identified by Beattie and versnyder1 and by Beattie and Hagel2 at the approximate composition TiNi2Si. Westbrook et al.' gave the composition as Ti2Ni7Sis. This phase was found to be fcc with a. = 11.201A and 116 atoms per unit cell. Beattie4 and more recently independently Hladishevskii, Kripyakevich, Kuzma, and Teslyuk5 were able to show that this structure is isotypic with MgeSi7CuLe and Th6Mn23. The latter structures had been determined by Florio, Rundle, and snow,' Nagorsen and Witte,7 and Bergman and Waugh.8 According to the crystal structure, Ti8Ni6Si7 may be considered as the ideal composition. The Russian investigators5 identified six additional ternary phases isotypic with Ti6Ni6Si7, in which titanium is replaced by Mn, V, Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, and one, namely MneNil6Ge7, in which germanium replaces silicon. They also found that Cr6Ni6Si7, which does not occur as a ternary phase, can be stabilized by replacing 1 at. pct of the Cr by V, Mn, or Ta. Another ternary silicide was found by Westbrook et al.3 at the composition TiNiSi, and it was designated by them as the E phase. The crystal structure of this phase has not been deter-

Annealed and electrolytically polished pure iron was oxidized between 650° and 850°C at oxygen pressures of 0.1 to 2 microns Hg. Electron optical studies showed that oxidation occurs discontinuously over the surface and orients crystallographically with the substructure of the metal grains. IN previous papers', " the authors described the formation of oxide films on high purity iron at norrnal pressures and at temperatures below 300°C. Electron optical studies showed that the oxide film consisted of many individual oxide crystallites having nearly random orientation on each metal grain. The size of the oxide crystallites depended upon the temperature and upon the extent of oxidation. In these studies the crystallite size varied from 250 to 1800Å. Recently, Bardolle and Benard3 studied the crystal habit of the oxide crystallites formed on Armco iron between 650" and 850°C in what might be defined as a "poor vacuum" atmosphere in which the pressure could be varied between 10-1 to 10-3 mm of Hg. Their results showed that, at 850°C and a vacuum of l0-2 to 10-3 mm of Hg, a few well oriented nuclei of oxide were formed on the metal grains. At pressures between l0-1 to 10-2 mm of Hg, many oriented nuclei of oxide were formed. At 750°C the metal surface was bright although an oxide was present. Unfortunately, the extent of oxidation, the oxygen pressure, and the influence of carbon in the metal were not determined, and it was, therefore, impossible to give a theoretical interpretation to the very beautiful light micrographs. Bardolle and Benard used the light microscope to determine the crystal habit of the oxide and X-ray diffraction to determine the orientation relationships. It was believed that the use of controlled amounts of oxidation at high temperature is an important method for the study of the initial stages of oxidation of metals at high temperatures. This paper presents the first results of an electron optical study of this problem for iron. Since the electron microscope and electron-diffraction methods using stripped oxide films and surface replicas yielded finer details of the crystal habit and structure of oxide film, these methods were used in this study. Two types of iron having different carbon contents were used: Puron and Armco* iron. A com- parison of the results for these materials made possible a study of the influence of the surface oxide-carbon reaction on the initial stages of oxidation. Before discussing the experimental results, the thermodynamic equilibria of 1—the oxidation reaction, 2—the surface oxide-carbon reaction, and 3—the solubility of oxygen in iron, will be considered. In addition, it is important to consider the kinetic-theory predictions on the rate of collision of oxygen with the iron surface. Thermodynamic and Kinetic-Theory Calculations Only one type of reaction is usually considered in the oxidation of iron at normal pressures at high temperatures: Fe(a) + 1/2O2(g) = FeO(s) 3Fe(a) + 2O2(g) = Fe3O4(s) 2Fe(a) +3/2O2(g) = a-Fe2O3(s). [11 However, two other reactions may occur: FeO(s) + C (solid solution in Fe) + Fe(a) + CO(g) [2] and Fe(a) + O2(g) e Fe(a) (solid solution of 0,). The dissociation pressure of Cr3C2 has been measured in the range of 1908" to 2237°K by means of graphite Knudsen effusion cells. It has been found that Cr3C2 vaporizes according to the following reaction: 1/3 Cr3C2 (s or 1) = 2/3 C (graph.) + Cr (g). The equilibrizcm pressure, P, of Cr (g) is found to be log Ps=- - (21,194/T) + 6.525 over solid Cr3C2 and estimated as log P, = - (19,535/T) + 5.76 over liquid Cr3C2. CARBIDES of chromium are of great importance in alloy steels and cemented carbides. The published data on their therm odynamic properties at high temperatures, however, are meager. The heat capacity and change in entropy of Cr3C2 were determined calorimetrically by Kelley and Moore1 in the range of approximately 50" to 300°K, and by Oriani and Murphy2 from 297" to 1188°K. The standard entropy of Cr3C2at 298.15°K, obtained by Kelley.7 was later confirmed by DeSorbo.4 Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated by Boericke.5 A recent tabular summary

Since the development of the pelletizing process in the fifties for relatively high purity pellets from low grade taconites, there have been several distinctive changes in filter construction for the dewatering step preceding balling. In the original large pilot plant run by Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt, MN, the disk type filter employing agitation (Agidisc filter) was selected as the most economical. Size was limited to 2.1 m (6 ft, 9 in.) in diameter. The second generation occurred in the sixties with a jump to 2.70 m (8 ft, 10 in.) in diameter to reduce capital costs per annual ton of pellet. In the early seventies, the third generation was the steam drying disk filter which became necessary to achieve balling moistures with specific surface areas of 2200 cm2/g to as high as 3800 cm2/g caused by finer grinding to obtain higher purities. Finally, the fourth generation has recently been developed to reduce maintenance costs and further improve hydraulics to ensure minimum moisture contents.

Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

THE ASSAY FOR COPPER. SOMEONE some time ago remarked that some chemists still insist on telling us how to determine copper by the electrolytic method. The. writer must confess that he believes that everything is not known definitely as yet as to how the exact amount of copper is determined in such material as purest commercial electrolytic copper. Some of us are not yet convinced that the pure copper atom is at all times deposited from an acid solution and that no oxygen or hydrogen will, under certain conditions, accompany it. Difficulties with impurer material are frequent, but erroneous results are not always apparent, since these do not speak so readily for themselves as those in the first case. By this is meant that if a chemist finds 100 per cent. of copper in electrolytic copper it is pretty certain that he perceives the result to be wrong, while if he finds 0.1 per cent. of copper too much in a very impure material he is far more likely to be unconscious of his error. These, in a wide experience, are frequent happenings and the writer has always looked with interest to publications on this subject. In turn, he :feels justified in giving to others a few of his own observations. Up to a few years ago there were two methods of electrolytic copper assay in technical use, which had in common, that the amount of copper deposited on the cathode did not exceed 2 g., and they differed in that, for the one a large sample 1 (20 to 80 g.) was taken from the general sample by a splitting device, dissolved, and from the solution a small portion (to contain 1 or 2, g. of copper) measured out for the electrolytic deposition; in the other Method the copper was determined, generally in 1-g. portions of the separated coarse and fine portions of the sample, all of which passed -a 16 or 20-mesh screen, being accomplished by a 40-mesh screen,

IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un-roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence. These variables were examined systematically to elucidate roasting and carbonate leaching of carnotite ores and to establish a treatment yielding high recoveries of both uranium and vanadium. Tests were conducted on samples of four different Colorado Plateau ores, described in Table I. Roasting Procedure: The roasting tests were conducted in an electrically heated furnace in which the temperature was controlled to +15oC. The ore (usually a 500-g charge) was ground to —100 mesh, mixed with the desired reagent, and spread in a silica tray to a bed depth of about 1/2 in. During the roast the charge was rabbled at intervals of 15 min. To provide free access of air the furnace was usually ventilated; however, in a few experiments a controlled atmosphere such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen was maintained above the charge. Leaching Procedure: The pulp, generally comprising 500 g of ore and a 2000-cc solution containing 80 g per liter of Na2CO3 and 20 g per liter of NaHCO3, was agitated in an autoclave at 120°C, under 30 psi O2. Samples were withdrawn periodically, and the solution and ore residue were analyzed. Under the conditions employed, maximum attainable extractions were generally achieved in 4

Bupyung Silver Mines daily treats average 14 tons of concentrates containing 9,000 g Ag per ton. Bupyung Silver Refinery uses Merrill Crowe process to recover the silver from the leach solution containing 1.0 g/l Ag; Series of experiments were carried out to recover the silver from the solution by means of direct electrowinning in place of Merrill Crowe process. The recovery of the silver was 99% when the cell voltage and the retention time were 1.9 v and 3.0 hours, respectively. Power consumption was 3.2 Kwh/kg of Ag. It was found that impurity buildup was not significant during the recycling. The direct operating cost for the electrowinning was evaluated to be $ 0.35/kg of Ag.

The amine flotation of feldspar from a magnetite concentrate produced at a domestic concentrator was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests, and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The point of zero charge of six feldspars (microcline, orthoclase, albite, anorthite, anorthoclase, and oligoclase) range from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using amine flotation reagents were performed on these feldspars and on gangue material (quartz, albite, and microcline) from the magnetite concentrating plant. Laboratory-scale (623 g and 2500 g) flotation tests were performed on the magnetite concentrate to float the feldspar. The effects of three different collectors, two levels of collector concentration, three pH levels, starch, HF acid and regrind were investigated.
