In a long term toxicology study SPF, F-344 rats were exposed 6 hours/day, 5 days/week for up to 24-months to a special test toner at 0, 1 (low), 4 (medium), and 16 (high) mg/m3, or Ti02 at 5 mg/m3, or Si02 at 1 mg/m3 by the inhalation route. The test toner was composed of about 90% random, high molecular weight acrylic copolymer and 10% high purity, medium color, furnace type, carbon black. It was enriched in fine particles such that the respirable aerosol concentrations (ACGIH) were to 0, 0.35, 1.4 and 5.6 mg/m3. There were no effects of exposure on survival, causes of death, body weight, food consumption or clinical chemistry and hematology parameters. There was no evidence for systemic or upper respiratory system toxicity as all of the changes were restricted to the lungs and associated lymph nodes. The lung tumor frequencies in the control (air and Ti02) and toner exposed groups were comparable. There were no changes at the low exposure level, which is the most relevant in regard to potential human exposures. The lung changes at the high exposure level consisted of decreased alveolar clearance, increased toner retention, increased lung weight, chronic inflammation, decreased pulmonary function and a moderate degree of focal fibrosis in all animals. The changes in the middle exposure level were smaller in magnitude than at the high level, and a very slight degree of fibrosis was found in 20% of the animals. In a follow-up investigation, female F-344 rats were exposed to one of three toner concentrations; control, low (10 mg/m3) or high (40 mg/m3) for 13 weeks followed by five, 13 week observation intervals. At the low exposure level, slight clearance retardation and modest inflammatory changes were observed at the end of exposure. They returned to normal values within six months post-exposure. In contrast, at the high exposure level, increased lung weight, decreased alveolar clearance and a disproportionate increase in toner retention, as well as an inflammatory response, were noted, which persisted throughout the post-exposure interval. While no significant histopathological changes were noted at the end of exposure, a very slight degree of fibrosis was observed in all of the animals in the high exposure group, after 65 weeks of observation. All of the above alterations are ascribable to "lung overloading", a generic response to excessive amounts of any dust retained in the lungs for a prolonged time interval. Published accounts in the toxicology literature document that long-term inhalation of large quantities of even innocuous particles such as Ti02, carbon black, petroleum coke, toner, and other polymeric and insoluble materials has resulted in a spectrum of generically similar pulmonary changes. Scaling of the rat-data, using 1 mg dust/g of lung as a threshold for "lung overloading", normal ventilatory parameters and 300-500 day human retention halftimes project "lung overloading" upon long-term exposure to insoluble respirable dust above 0.2-0.33 mg/m3. Other types of information are consistent with an exposure limit in the range of 0.4-1.0 mg/m3 for respirable dust. The absence of definitive toxicology data in support of the current OSHA respirable nuisance dust limit, coupled with the lack of sound epidemiology data, indicate the need to reexamine the validity of the current nuisance dust health standard.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The leaching processes and mechanisms of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth (RE) ores with ammonium sulfate were investigated for their high efficiency and low consumption exploitation. The leaching process is a typical reversible heterogeneous ion exchange reaction in liquid–solid systems. The raw ore and leached tailings were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Results indicated that no dissolution or structural changes of the ores occurred during the leaching process. The migrations of RE3+, Al3+, and NHþ 4 in the leaching process were studied under various liquid–solid ratios. With increasing liquid–solid ratio, the content of NHþ 4 adsorbed on clay mineral by physical effect decreased, NHþ 4 adsorbed by ion-exchange increased, and the content of exchanged RE and Al increased until reaching equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of the RE ores for NHþ 4 remained about 0.61–0.63 mg/g. It was difficult to desorb NHþ 4 from RE ores with washing water alone. The leaching mechanism of Al was the same as RE, but the leaching of Al slightly lagged behind RE. At the optimal liquid–solid ratio of 0.4:1, the leaching efficiencies of RE and Al were 95.51% and 90.99%, respectively, and 56.65% of NHþ 4 remained in the leachate. After impurity removal and RE precipitation, the leachate can be reused by replenishing fresh leaching agent. The aim of this study is to enhance the leaching process of RE, restrain the leaching of impurities, and decrease the consumption of leaching agents.

The phosphate rock review did not arrive in time for publication in the. June issue. The world phosphate industry continued its slide in 1992 from the already depressed levels in 1991. The industry is locked into a 30-year fertilizer price low due to the worldwide fertilizer glut. Domestic production and imported, marketable phosphate rock decreased 1%, while domestic consumption increased by 1 % last year. The US Bureau of Mines reported a decrease in the domestic phosphate rock value from $25.42/t in 1991 to $23/t in 1992 ($23.06/st to $20.80/st). The diammonion phosphate (DAP) product price also dropped in value from $138/ t in January 1992 to $11 0/t in December ($125/st to $99.70/st). Continued declines in DAP prices is forcing the US fertilizer industry to develop cost-saving programs and reorganizations. Layoffs in 1992 resulted in a 7.6% decrease in the Florida phosphate workforce. Since 1980, the Florida workforce has declined by 35%. Small phosphate companies were forced to close operations or were sold to larger phosphate companies. Federal and state environmental regulations for byproduct waste disposal methods are being studied. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved phosphogypsum use in agri¬cultural and research applications as long as the radium 226 concentration is lower than 10 pci/g. The EPA is also reviewing regulations concerning air emissions at fertilizer plants. Industry publications reported the possibility of continued company sales and mergers in 1993. Industry expectations are optimistic while waiting for an upturn in the market. The US phosphate industry consolidation into three or four major companies should evolve into a stronger world market force.

"Paste Technology has some advantages comparing to other surface disposal methods. With this method, it is possible to pump high concentrated solid materials to very long distances without segregation problem. However, it is known from Literature that pumpability of materials is completely related to rheological properties of the materials. For this reason, in this study, the rheological parameters (e.g. yield stress and viscosity values) of the paste material prepared from Pb-Zn tailings at various solid ratios (60-85%) were obtained in order to determine the pumpability of the paste material. Additionally, slump tests, which are usually used in mining industry, was carried out. Finally, regression analysis was made between the slump values and rheological parameters of the paste material to find a correlation between two independent parameters. The results showed that there is a great correlation between the slump values and the yield stress of the material. On the other hand, there was no correlation with viscosity: ty=430.28-16.877Sv (R2= 0,94; ty: Yield Stress (Pa), Sv: Slump Value (cm)). Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be clearly concluded that the slump values obtained from a simple test can be used to predict yield stress values of paste materials. INTRODUCTION Recently, surface disposal of mining tailings has become one of the biggest problems in mining industry in terms of environmental issues. Therefore, several researches have been focused on this subject in order to find a best solution or method for this problem. These studies showed that paste technology has some advantages compared to other conventional methods. Tailings thickened to the extent show no segregation of particles during transportation, and relatively small amount of settling occur post-deposition which are often called “paste” (Cincilla et al. 1997). Paste tailing technology has two applications in the industrial area as underground paste fill and surface paste disposal. Paste tailing technology was first started to be used in Grund mine, Germany in the late 1970s (Grice, 1998). Process tailing material, water and - if needed - cement materials, which are the components of the paste, must be blended to obtain a homogenous mixture suitable for pumpability. Consistency behavior of the paste material is determined using a conventional sedimentation cone concrete test (slump). Meanwhile, the slump value of the paste must be between 200 and 250 mm for surface applications (Newman et al., 2001). Additionally, in the case of underground paste system, the optimum slump value must be between 150 and 200 mm. On the other hand, the water content and density of paste at certain slump value change depending on the amount of fine particles in the tailing sample. While moisture of the material will be high, its density will be low because of surface area of particles which increases with decrease in particle size (Meggyes and Debreczeni, 2006). For pumpability of the paste to long distances, slump value of the paste must be good enough to be accepted for use of surface paste disposal. Paste material has a yield stress because they show non-Newtonian behavior and generally is classified as a Bingham plastic fluid. (Cooke, 2008; Theriault, 2003). In addition, the appropriate viscosity value of the paste along with the yield stress must be between 100 and 250 Pa (Bascetin et al., 2013; Bascetin et al., 2014; Bascetin et al., 2015)."

Technical Papers, Mining Engineering Vol. 49, No. 12, pp. 70-75, Discussion by McIvor, R. and Fink, R. P. We must challenge what we consider to be dubious statements in the above-mentioned article. Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. The commenters may be trying to make the point that the four-hole configurations with respect to the original bench face are not exactly the same. In fragmenting the

INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Now, if we accept the relation of underground space use to urban size and density, recent demographic trends seem anything but hopeful for future tunnelling demand: urban density is declining, population growth is slowing down generally, and there

The Berkeley Pit of The Anaconda Company is located on the southeast slope of the Butte Hill, the legendary "Richest Hill on Earth," and is one of the largest pit operations in the world completely dependent on truck haulage. Through October 31, 1968, the Berkeley stripping and mining operations have moved more than 442,589,000 tons of material. Present scheduled production is at the rate of 260,000 tons per day, with a record quantity of 306,900 tons having been hauled on September 23, 1968. Although the Berkeley Pit has been in production only a little more than ten years, it has been the proving ground for many of the presently used large trucks. Beginning with the original R. G. LeTourneau 75-ton electric truck in 1960, Unit Rig 85- and 100-ton electric drives, Haulpak 65- and 105-ton electric drives, and Caterpillar 100-ton electric drives have all been tested under production conditions. In addition, engine development has kept pace with both 1000-hp diesel and 1100-hp gas turbine engines now under test. As the size of the Berkeley operation has grown, the truck fleet has changed in size and appearance in order to maintain economic mining costs. The original fleet consisted of forty-three 36-ton trucks with conventional mechanical drives. The present fleet is made up of eighty-nine trucks: nineteen 85-ton Unit Rig electrics with 700-hp diesel engines; sixty-nine 100-ton Unit Rig electrics with either 700- or 1000-hp diesel engines; and one 100-ton Unit Rig electric with an 1100-hp gas turbine engine.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. Brines (a solution containing more than 100,000 mg/l dissolved solids) in sedimentary basins are genetically related to evaporites in one of three ways: (1) dissolution of evaporite minerals, generally halite; (2) interstitial fluids in evaporites which are expelled from their source rock during compaction; (3) incongruent alteration of hydrous evaporite minerals (carnallite). Most brines of commercial interest originate as interstitial fluids in halite-rich rocks. These fluids are initially rich in magnesium, sulfate, and potassium but evolve in composition to an Na-Ca-Cl brine during their migration to their present host rock. A particularly important reaction in this process is: 2CaCO3 + Mgt+ = CaMg(CO3)2 + Cat (1a) This reaction reduces the magnesium content of the brine and ultimately converts it to a calcium-rich brine. The loss of sulfate occurs by two mechanisms. One of these is by direct precipitation as calcium sulfate (either as gypsum or anhydrite): Ca 2+ + SO4 2- = CaSO4 (2a) Additional sulfate may be lost from the brine by sulfate reduction: S042 + 1.33CH2 + 214- = H2S + 1.33CO2 + 1.33H20 (3a) The loss of carbonate species occurs by precipitation as carbonates: H2O + C02 + Cat = CaCO3 + 2H+ (4a) The net result of reactions 3 and 4 is: Ca 2+ + SO4 2- + 1.33CH2 = H2S + CaCO3 + 0.33H2O + 0.33CO2 (5a) The loss of potassium from brines is caused by the formation of potassium aluminosilicates: 2K+ + Al2Si2O5 (OH)4 + 4SiO2 = 2H + 2KAlSi2O8 + H2O (6a) The hydrogen ions produced by this reaction dissolve carbonates: 2H+ + CaCO3 = Ca 2+ + CO2 + H2O (7a) The net result of reactions 6 and 7 is: 2K+ + CaCO3 + Al2Si205 OH)4 + 4SiO2 = Ca2 + 2KA1Si3O8 + H2O + C02 (8a) A study of brines from central Mississippi has shown that the composition of these brines is related to the interaction of pore fluids from evaporites with minerals in the enclosing sedimentary rocks.

The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from US coal mines have been collected and tested. 70 The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal which is a good indicator for potential of self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential of coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques and adiabatic tests are reasonably consistent with each other. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal are easier to be activated with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will has a higher potential of self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with low potential of self-ignition has low self-heating rate, high activation energy and high minimum self-heating temperature.

However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations, and this represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita Mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process. Copper heap leaching dissolves more than just copper from the copper ore. Several metals can be identified in leach solutions at concentrations of financial interest, rhenium in particular. Rhenium spot prices ranged from a yearly average of $1,070/kg ($483/lb) in 2005 (Magyar, 2008) to $10,400/kg ($4,706/lb) in 2008 (Polyak, 2013). The spot price in September 2013 was approximately $3,000/kg ($1,357/lb) of rhenium (Metal Bulletin, 2013). Several facilities at Freeport-McMoRan have very low rhenium concentrations in their copper leach solutions, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/L. The large quantity of solution available, if coupled with an attractive rhenium price, means that the rhenium contained in leach solutions may represent a significant value if a method of extraction could be developed. Testing has confirmed that rhenium adsorbs onto activated carbon much more selectively than other metals in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). A 100-gpm pilot plant was constructed to verify the lab-scale results on a larger basis and establish operating parameters for a full-scale operation. This report summarizes the initial technology development and pilot plant operation.

At the 2017 ICGCM-conference in Morgantown, WV, a case study was presented with measurements of the upward surface movements or uplift after the closure of two neighboring coal mines (Winterslag and Zwartberg, Belgium). One was closed in the sixties, and the other closed in 1988. The study was based on satellite data (Radar-interferometry or InSAR). The analyses showed both a significant variation of uplift values above the mined area and the surrounding zones, and a variation of the uplift rate as a function of time. In other words, the phenomenon of uplift is complex. At that time, it also was clear that more research was needed to better understand this phenomenon, e.g., an identification of the various mechanisms that are relevant for the process of uplift and the quantification of the various impacts. A systematic analysis of all relevant parameters resulted in a framework that forms the basis for the analytical calculations of uplift values. These calculations show that the main impact is due to changes in the hydrostatic pressure. However, the expansion of the softest parts, i.e., the collapsed or goaf material, is not only important, but the expansion of the (stiffer) non-collapsed strata layers due to a change in pore pressure also must be integrated into the model. For the case study, the partial flooding of the underground after closure of the mine that was abandoned in the sixties is integrated into the model. Larger stiffness values also are applied for this mine, in comparison to the values of the more recently closed mine. Overall, a very good correlation is observed between the InSAR-measurements and the calculated values along a north-south transect.

A common result of Environmental Impact Assessments associated with mining projects is the construction of new wetlands in areas disturbed by mining operations. Where appropriate, this mitigation may be considered an integral part of the mine reclamation process under the principles of sustainable development in the minerals industry. Wetbud is a new tool for estimating wetland water budgets using available weather data and site-specific topographic, soil and geohydrologic data, coupled with mass balance mathematics. Wetbud is primarily intended as a planning tool for use in the design of created wetlands, but it can also be applied to native wetlands or wetland restoration sites where the required input parameters can be specified. Wetbud can be run in its basic form where wetland topography, soil parameters and groundwater flux are simplified, or in the advanced form, where these parameters are included in a more complex approach via integration of the MODFLOW package, a free 3D program that was developed by the United States Geological Survey. Both versions can also include overbank flow hydrology sources and the advanced form can also model sloping and irregular topography. The program downloads weather data from the nearest applicable station and selects appropriate wet-normal-dry (W-N-D) years following a modest user data clean-up step. Wetbud also has the ability to utilize existing short-term (e.g. 6 to 9 months) groundwater data from an up-gradient well to simulate longer-term groundwater level inputs for the selected W-N-D years. In addition, Wetbud features a “Wizard” version that comes pre-loaded with 14 pre-selected weather data sets for all areas of Virginia that can develop a simple monthly water budget in less than 15 minutes – a feature that could be expanded anywhere geographically with historic weather data.

The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

The earliest industrial application of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) at comminution was in 1984 in the cement industry. Since then, the equipment has been widely applied in mining activities. Despite the rapid spread across the industry, several challenges are still present in the equipment’s application, especially considering the complex ore breakage behaviour reported for this process. The pellet feed’s HPGR comminution was recognized as fundamental to efficiently increase the particle surface area (e.g., blaine specific area, BSA) at a lower energy and water consumption level (Chapman et al. in J Southern Afr Instit Mining Metall 113:407–413, 2013). The present study considers a novel milling process applying only HPGR as a re-regrind stage after concentration. The amount of successive ground product recirculation into the machine to achieve the required particle size for the pelletizing process was investigated. The study compared the ball wet milling process with the innovative processing technology for hematite–goethite ores. Green pellet balling and induration processes were simulated in bench and pilot scale. The milling results showed a considerably steep increase in BSA after each recirculation step into the HPGR, although compared with the ball-milled product the size fraction <45 μm% increased a modest five percentage points after three recirculation cycles, remaining steady until the last recirculation step. As a result, the green pellet generated presented higher concentration of pellets between 10 and 16 mm (%10-16 mm), with a higher drop number than typically observed when produced with ball-milled feedstock. Consequently, on the induration process, a higher pellet deformation was observed during the pot grate loading. Despite that, the fired pellets still presented an outstanding performance in cold crush strength (CSS) considered suitable to an industrial application.
