Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). The newly discovered South Arturo deposit is a Carlin-type, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located on the Dee Mine property at the north end of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. The Dee Gold Mine was discovered in 1981 by Dee Delamar, a Cordex geologist. The property was put into production by Rayrock Mines in 1984. During its 16-year mine life, the Dee Mine produced about 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of gold from oxide ore at an average production rate of about 1.24 to 1.55 t/a (40,000 to 50,000 oz/year). In October 1997, Bar-rick Gold Exploration acquired the right to earn a 60-percent interest in the Dee property from Dee Gold Mines through an exploration farm-out agreement. Barrick Gold Exploration began exploration activities on the property in 1998 and vested in its 60 percent operating interest in 2004. However, the discovery hole at South Arturo was not drilled until July 2005 from atop the historic mine dumps located 300 m (985 ft) south of the Dee openpit. The discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 75.6 m (248 ft) of oxide mineralization grading 1.9 g/t (0.055 oz/st) gold beneath 260 m (855 ft) of dump material and post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Oxidation within the deposit extends to depths greater than 610 m (2,000 ft). The deposit has passed the prefeasibility test and is presently in the feasibility stage. Exploration is on-going to enhance or enlarge the known deposit. The current resource for the deposit stands at 40.4 t (1.3 million oz) of gold. The South Arturo discovery is an example of an historic mining property yielding a new discovery through the diligent application of area selection criteria of the model type and persevering when early results were generally negative. Barrick?s original exploration pro-grams on the property were focused on the discovery of deep, high-grade sulfide deposits that would likely be mined by underground methods. As it turns out, South Arturo is mostly oxidized and will be amenable to mining by openpit methods

The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounces per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m elevation (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required a three lift hoisting system for men, materials and ore. In addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity, temperature, ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operation. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation. The results of the studies indicated that a new deep shaft with a potential to hoist from 2,135 m (7,000 feet) or below was the most attractive option. Detailed design of the shaft and associated surface plant commenced in January, 1982 and the following milestone dates were achieved: 1980 - initial study of hoisting and haulage facilities; January, 1981 - ore reserves in excess of 1 million tonnes of ore at 18.7 g/tonne (0.45 oz/ton) confirmed; March, 1982 - preliminary study of Macassa No. 3 Shaft completed; April, 1982 - permanent hoisting plant purchased; June, 1982 - site clearing commenced; September, 1982 - shaft collared; May 1, 1983 - shaft sinking commenced; February 11, 1985 - shaft reached 1,600 m (1mile); December 1, 1985 - shaft scheduled for completion.

7.1 INTRODUCTION The circulating fluid (generally an aqueous cyanide solution) is the major active component of heap leaching. This solution extracts precious metal from the heap and is then processed to recover the precious metal. The solution continuously recycles through the heap to recover more precious metal. With each cycle through the heap, water and chemicals are lost. Make-up water and chemicals must be added to balance losses from evaporation, seepage, entrainment, and chemical reaction in the heap, as well as any other processing losses. Adding more water than needed can result in a build-up of water as inventory in the various ponds and can eventually require that water be discharged from the operation. This is an extremely undesirable condition, and can often be very expensive in both investment in water treating facilities and operating costs. Most heap leach facilities operate under a zero discharge permit; thus, a situation requiring water discharge can result in permit violation. Chemical solution control must be managed to maintain the optimum pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cyanide content, while preventing "scaling". Calcium-based precipitation is a common scaling problem in mill reclaim waters. A buildup of these deposits can result in severe reduction of water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in metal production. In addition, problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon (in carbon recovery systems) can be and often are experienced when scale control is not maintained. The remainder of this chapter discusses chemical solution control and scaling prediction/prevention in the context of a "closed" system. Sizing of ponds to accommodate precipitation and runoff, collection systems, and other similar design considerations are not discussed here. These topics are deferred to later chapters, e.g. Chapter 10 considers design of collection systems while Chapter 12 discusses pond sizing. 7.2 CHEMICAL CONTROL Chemical composition of the circulating solution must be controlled by the operator if the heap leaching process is to be successful. In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines. Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. The presence of an oxidized zone of any vertical and horizontal extent is important. This gives rise to continued exploration, as the

This paper describes the development of a novel selective flocculation technique for recovering phosphate values from ores containing silicate or carbonate gangue minerals. Data from initial flocculation response and reagent adsorption studies on component mineral suspensions and synthetic mixtures were used to assess the influence of various process parameters (e.g., reagent dosages, particle size, solids concentration, and conditioning regimes) on single-stage selective flocculation tests involving natural silicate and carbonate ores. In these tests a high degree of selectivity was achieved using low dosages of a low-molecular-weight cationic dispersant and a mid-range molecular weight cationic flocculant. Testwork was then extended to the evaluation of several floc recovery systems (sedimentation, hydrocyclones, and floc flotation) in a multi-stage process involving redispersion and reflocculation. Results from these tests clearly demonstrated the feasibility of producing marketable phosphate concentrates from both ore types.

"Diesel particulate Matter (DPM) is a byproduct of fuel combustion in diesel engines. It is classified as a carcinogen, with associated respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. The composition, size, and concentration of DPM is dependent on factors such as engine type, loading and fuel composition. Though a number of DPM abatement and control strategies currently exist, particularly in underground mining environments, occupational exposures remain a serious health concern. As a novel abatement approach, DPM scavenging by fine water or “fog” droplets has been proposed and a laboratory set-up has been built to test the efficacy on engine exhaust. Here, we describe a series of tests that varied engine load, system flow rate and fog drop number density. While none of these factors had overwhelming effects on the results within the ranges tested, the improvement in DPM mass removal attributed to the fog treatment was about 45% on average in comparison to no treatment. INTRODUCTION Diesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy1. More recently, however, adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. Many of these risks are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components1–3. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are a mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash3. The OC fraction of DPM results from unburned fuel and lube oil, whereas EC or soot is formed during the combustion of locally rich regions within the fuel. DPM is classified as a carcinogen6,7 and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustion-related fine particulate and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases8,9. Diesel engines operate in relative fuel rich/oxygen lean conditions and are characterized by relatively high emissions of particulate as compared to spark-ignition engines2,3,10. Typically, these emissions range from 107 – 109 particles/cc and cover two primary size ranges: the nuclei mode where particles have diameters less than about <50 nm, and the accumulation mode where diameters are from about 50-10,000 nm. Most OC resides in the nuclei mode as semi-volatile compounds, while most EC is in the accumulation mode3. The physical and chemical properties of DPM vary with the type of engine, fuel (e.g., petro- vs. bio-diesel) and operating conditions such as loading (i.e., a function of torque and rotational speed)2,3,9,11,12. Loading is a particularly important factor with respect to DPM toxicity9,13,14, and on the effectiveness of after-treatment technologies2,3,15. Engine load alone can affect the EC/OC ratio, and the size distribution and number density of DPM. For diesel engines, the load is roughly proportional to the equivalence ratio3, defined as the actual fuel/air ratio over the stoichiometric fuel/air ratio for complete combustion. Light loads generally favor the formation of OC and small particles. As load is increased the volatiles are oxidized leading to larger soot particles (i.e., EC), but lower total number density of DPM. With further loading, the formation of soot offsets the decrease in volatiles, resulting in increased DPM mean size and number density3."

There is a plethora of former industrial sites where coal mining operations have left large slurry impoundments. These contain raw washed fines, which have previously been too expensive to process to requisite grades for commercial use. New technology has been developed for fine material processing, namely the Imhoflot pneumatic flotation G-Cell. This froth flotation technique is a highly efficient means of concentrating coal and is particularly appropriate to the nature of materials encountered in tailings ponds. The high volumetric throughput resulting from the vastly reduced residence time in the cell allows for drastically reduced equipment sizes when compared to conventional flotation cells. This means the process, when combined with innovative pre treatment and filtration equipment can be developed as a mobile plant concept. This is seen as a minimum requirement when re-treating and rehabilitating fine coal ponds.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. A prototype expert system for planning and designing an underground coal mine has been developed in a doctoral study at the University of Kentucky. This prototype expert system for underground coal mine planning and designing consists of a number of knowledge bases concerning different elements of design (e.g., ground control, excavation and bulk materials handling, ventilation, etc.). The objective of this paper is to present the development process of the ventilation design knowledge base for this prototype. This expert system prototype is intended for building an instructional expert system for underground coal mine design. Therefore, the undergraduate course on mine design has been used as the basis, for its development. Because of the availability of knowledge and expertise, this research study has been limited to development of a knowledge model for the Appalachian coal mining region.

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch&apos;s work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch&apos;s work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations requires a significant amount of information to train robust performance prediction models, e.g., for tunneling-induced settlement, productivity, tool wear, etc. This paper presents the AI framework applied to the North-East Boundary Tunnel (NEBT), the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project in Washington, DC. The paper focuses on required elements for real-time AI use to estimate tunneling-induced ground and building deformation and cutter tool wear. Keys to the framework include defining the necessary quantities of data required as well as the process of windowed training, validation and model testing. To date, the models developed for ground deformation and tool wear show satisfactory performance when compared to observed field observations during tunneling.

Improvement of grade and recovery requires the use of optimum processing circuits. Critical to an optimum circuit is the set point for separation. With the introduction of the concept of circuit analysis (Meloy, 1982), it became possible to determine optimum circuits for a given task. No analysis, however, has yet been made as to the grade requirements of the larger circuits. Williams and Meloy (1982), reviewed the literature and concluded that, within the operating range, most unit operations involved in particle separation behave linearly. For the purposes of this analysis, linearity will be assumed. Grade, G, is defined as the weight of the coal mineral, C, that appears in the product, divided by the weight of the coal mineral plus the weight of the gangue mineral or waste mineral, Q, which appear in the product.

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

The ability of wireless systems—e.g., voice communication, proximity detection, tele-remote operation, telemetry, etc.—to function satisfactorily (coexist) in the presence of other wireless systems is critical to the safety and health of mine workers. The failure of wireless systems to coexist could result in the delay, corruption, or outright loss, of critical data, voice, or video information. However, no mining-sector-specific regulations, standards, or guidelines exist to ensure the safe coexistence of wireless systems. This paper introduces the concept of wireless coexistence, implications in the mining industry, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) research approach to develop guidelines and recommendations to ensure safe wireless coexistence.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway&apos;s company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner&apos;s Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km&apos;/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company&apos;s initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner&apos;s Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear&apos;s Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner&apos;s Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner&apos;s Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner&apos;s Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner&apos;s Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company&apos;s common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner&apos;s Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. Fly ash samples were collected from two large lignite-fired power plants of Ptolemais region, northern Greece. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) was applied for the characterisation of the samples. ESEM coupled with Energy Dispersive System (EDS) provided fast and accurate results on the morphology, mineralogy and chemical composition of the fly ash particles. Fly ash consists mainly of aluminosilicate glass, silicates, oxides-hydroxides, sulphates, carbonates and char. Various types of chars, spheres (e.g. ferrospheres, cenosphers, plerospheres etc.), spheroids, agglomerates and mineral crystalls were observed. The size distribution of the fly ash particles was correlated with their mineralogical and chemical composition. Possible environmental impacts and potential utilization is also discussed in this study.

Interest is increasing in obtaining incremental improvements in mineral recoveries in flotation processes because of changing world economic conditions. Research on collector reagents, long indispensable components in flotation systems may provide the cheapest and simplest route to higher metal recoveries. Sulfhydryl group - containing compounds (-SH) and their salts, e.g., dithiophosphates, xanthates and a few other derivatives are commonly used to promote the flotation of sulfide minerals. Alkyl mercaptans, another class of sulfhydryl compounds, have long been known to have collecting properties but have been relegated to dormancy for one reason or another. This paper reports results from new investigations of alkyl mercaptans, trithiocarbonates, and a petroleum oil with a variety of western domestic and Canadian ores for copper and molybdenum sulfides recovery. Specific opportunities are pointed out to the industry for mineral recovery enhancement through the use of the proper reagent combination.
