Mining activities involve excavation from underground to the surface of large quantities of ore (e.g. uranium and its disintegration products) (Dumitrescu, 2002, 2007). Material with limited content of uranium, deemed as sterile or low-radioactive is mainly stored on the surface. These wastes modify the configuration of the disposal areas and affect the quality of the environment and the landscape. This paper presents both analytical and numerical models related to stability assessment of uranium mining waste dumps. It is focused on the calibration procedure of the numerical models, in order to minimize risk error during stability prediction and avoid long term environment pollution.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is the most serious environmental problem facing the Canadian Mineral Industry today. Acid Mine Drainage results from oxidation of sulphide minerals (e.g. pyrite or pyrrhotite) contained in mine waste or mine tailings. It is characterised by acid effluents rich in heavy metals that are released into the environment. A new acid remediation technology is presented in this paper by which metallurgical residues from the aluminium extraction industry are used to construct permeable reactive barriers (PRB) to treat acid mine effluents. It describes column tests performed to simulate a PRB using Bauxsol?, a chemically and physically treated bauxite refinery residue, as a reactive material. This experimentation shows promising results for the Bauxsol? PRB method in neutralizing pH and removing metals from acidic mine effluents.

The San Luis deposit of Costilla County, Colorado contains 11,021,000 tonnes (12,149,000 tons) of ore at 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz/st) gold in two mineable zones. Gold mineralization is associated with silicification and quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration localized in breccias along a low-angle "detachment" fault zone in Precambrian gneiss. Gangue minerals include chlorite, specularite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and fluorite. Mineralization is mid-Tertiary in age and may have an indirect genetic relation to the emplacement of felsic intrusions. Portions of the ore body are unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Tertiary Santa Fe Formation. The deposit formed during the early stages of extensional tectonism along the eastern edge of the present day Rio Grande rift.

A 1 t/d continuous elution pilot plan is being operated by General Mining at their Grootvlei Gold Mine using the technology developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories. Flowsheet design and plant erection was carried out by Van Eck & Lurie and completed in December 1989. Following the conclusion of six test runs designed to optimise reagent additions, it was shown that elution efficiencies of 98-99% could be achieved using reagent additions as· low as 16 kg/ton of carbon NaCN and 28 kg/ton NaOH while consistently producing eluted carbon containing less than 50 g/t gold. Significant savings were indicated when compared and power were indicated when com­pared with the traditional batch AARL, Zadra and Micron alcohol elution procedures.

Spherical or oil agglomeration has been recognised for many years as a possible process for the recovery of mineraVmetal values. BP has investigated the potential of spherical agglomeration for a number of minerals as have other workers. Testwork has also been carried out by both BP and others on the selective agglomeration of fine coal. The spherical agglomeration of both minerals and coal depends on the use of an immiscible liquid e.g. a hydrocarbon which is added to a suspension of the solids in water. On agitation the oil is distributed over oleophilic/hydrophobic surfaces and particle impact allows inter-particle liquid bridges to form causing agglomeration. It is also possible to enhance the oleophilicity of the material to be recovered by the use of collectors similar to those used in froth flotation.

Dr. Roussey Roussev The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on fig. 3, in conjunction with Figs. 1 and 2. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected. The supportive discussion and verification by Dr. Roussev, with results similar to that of the paper, is appreciated. I will try to answer the additional questions he has raised. To begin with, the mill was fitted with six lifters of approximately one-quarter inch height. There has been extensive lab and plant level work to understand downstream influences of using dispersants like XFS-4272*. In sulfide ore processing, which is the area in which most industrial scale testing has been performed with this approach, neutral to positive influences have been observed. For example, positive effects (e.g., increased recovery) have been noticed in flotation operations involving ores that have a tendency to produce excessive slimes upon grinding. (1) Also, the use of a dispersant has been shown to demonstrate a positive influence on classification by improving the sharpness of separation and preventing a decrease in d50 value that usually accompanies increasing flow rates to classifiers.(2) The biggest potential downstream problem is in thickening, which at the dosages involved, has not been a problem in plant scale usage. The commercial price of dispersants like XFS-4272 is quite variable depending on source, concentration, etc, but a typical cost of XFS-4272 to achieve a 10% increase in throughput in industrial mills has been between 20 and 35- US per ton of feed ore (1981).

When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.

In September 1855, 55-year-old Noah Spencer Kellogg and his $3 jackass named Bill discovered what was known at the time as a “blow out” of high-grade lead and silver ore. The deposit was located on the side of a North Idaho mountain high above the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. The ore was later assayed at 41,141 g/t (1,200 oz/st) silver. Kellogg named his discovery the Bunker Hill Lode, after the June 17, 1775 Revolutionary War battle of Bunker Hill. A thriving pioneer settlement sprang into existence around the resulting mine’s workings and was eventually— and appropriately — named Kellogg. The peak rising hundreds of feet above the mine’s adit was named “Jack-ass Peak” after Noah Kellogg’s hairy companion.

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz.) Au/Ton. Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.

The Colorado Department of Highways awarded a contract to construct the Second Bore of the Eisenhower Tunnel in August, 1975. The contract was completed June 29, 1979, nine days ahead of schedule, with¬out major claims or delays. The tunneling involved complex construction through difficult ground conditions. The contract, plans and specifications were specifically planned to more equitably share the risks involved and to minimize adversary relationships. The Department produced a detailed tunnel design and maintained responsibility for the design. The contract employed some new provisions; e.g., a review board for settlement of claims and disputes; escrow documents (contractor's bid documents) to determine the contractor's basis of bid when determining adjustments. The tunnel contract, plans and administrative efforts employed by the owner and contractor were very successful in this project.

2.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter provides the reader with a sense of how a heap leach project may make an orderly, and hopefully non-traumatic, transition from discovery or acquisition to project construction. In making this transition a project can pass through several project development phases (i.e. ore definition and delineation, conceptual engineering, detailed engineering, and ultimately on to project construction and operation). "Go" or "no go" decisions may occur at any point in each of these phases. The transition from ore definition to detailed engineering should be accomplished via a well thought out program of interdisciplinary studies and an integrated, interdisciplinary project team. This chapter also describes, in general terms, a "roadmap" approach to the project evaluation process that must occur as project planning and development progress. It is the experience of the authors, as well as a myriad of companies who have been through the heap leach project development process, that a systematic approach will save many headaches, and many dollars. In fact, it is safe to say that a project with no formalized system of "objectives setting" and "milestone charting" may well flounder along the way, even if an economic ore body exists. Many papers and technical articles have been written about various aspects of mineral resource appraisal, economic evaluation, and mine development. Most of these invoke the same general philosophy of a systematic approach to project evaluation and development, although methods cited for attaining goals are quite variable. This is undoubtedly appropriate, given the fact that there is great variation in approach to project development (e.g., climatic considerations, ore body size and physical ore characteristics, permitting constraints, etc.). For the purposes of this chapter, two primary sources of information have been used to highlight the "road map" approach previously alluded to. These sources are cited throughout the text as Mackenzie (1980) and Snow and Michel s (1986). A brief summary of each of these sources is provided below: Brian GJ. Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.

The industrial processing of ores containing precious metals such as gold is generally very mining site specific, e. g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985), vanZyl et. a1. (1988), Fuerstenau and Hendrix (1990), and Hausen et. a1. (1990). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size reduction, size classification, gravity separation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical and/or bacterial leaching, ion exchange and/or solvent extraction, and froth flotation. Gold occurs in the earth's crust on the average in very low concentration estimated by various sources to be between two and five parts per billion. For a specific ore deposit to be considered as an economic source of gold, generally a concentration of near one part-per million (one gram / Mton) or more is required. From a mineralogical viewpoint, gold often occurs in its native or free form. However, it can also occur as gold compounds of telluride, antimony, and selenium contained within either sulfide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite. and pyrrhotite or, to a less extent, within silicate, oxide, and carbonate minerals. In many locations, alloying of gold with silver is found. The optimal processing method for recovering gold is determined by many factors such as the mineralogy of the gold bearing minerals as well as the associated mineralogy of the gangue minerals, the type of liberation profile of the gold bearing minerals upon' size reduction, and the particle size of the gold itself. Free or native gold particles can vary in size from the extreme of large nuggets to very finely disseminated gold associated in a complex sulfide mineral matrix. Typically free gold particles of several hundred microns or larger are efficiently recovered by one or more of a number of gravity based techniques due to the large specific gravity differential of gold (19.3 to 15) versus typical gangue minerals (5 to 2.7). When gold is associated with a sulfide (usually pyrite) matrix, historically most industrial plants involving size reduction and subsequent liberation have operated in a size range of 50 to 80 percent less than 75 microns. Grinding finer than this has been normally not economical unless the ore has a high gold content in the feed ore.

Many public domain programs useful in mining engineering, e.g., MULSIM, DZTAB, and EXPAREA, require tedious data input and generate pages and pages of printed output. To eliminate the tedium and to enhance the output, ETI U.S., Inc. developed GEM, Graphics for Engineering and Mining, a collection of application programs and underlying interface tools for VAX/VMS computers. This paper presents an example of how an application program in GEM enhances a specific public domain program. It describes how GEM provides automated graphics assisted input and output. The paper describes how this program uses the GEM User Interface: the 3D GKS device independent graphics, server and drivers, various mining, mathematical and statistical algorithms, the means of handling graphics, data including IGES, and the foreign language interface.

"INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

Open pit anthracite mining at the Canmore Creek Mines, Canmore, Alberta, south of Banff National Park, resulted in several pit lakes by the early 1970’s. To enable future mining opportunities in the Rocky Mountains, operators decided to reclaim the site into a non-polluting landscape which would provide a memorable outdoor experience for residents and visitors alike, and would preserve wildlife habitat. Reclamation began with the stabilization and revegetation of spoil piles adjacent to Canmore Creek, and the backfilling and revegetation of Canmore Creek Mines No. 1 and 2 to create “Salamander Pond.” The company dammed the outlet of an open pit at Canmore Creek Mine No. 3 to raise the water level and create Quarry Lake. Reclamation concluded in 1980 when the Town of Canmore took ownership. Quarry Lake is now the centerpiece of 293-acre Quarry Lake Heritage Park, a popular destination for swimming, hiking, and fishing, visited by about 400 people on summer days. The Alberta Environment Conservation Authority described this as “The best mine reclamation in Western Canada.” Quarry Lake is an exceptional example of walk-away, pit lake closure, where the mining company created a valued post-mining asset and was released from future liabilities. INTRODUCTION One of the most important environmental issues associated with contemporary open pit mining is the closure of mine pit lakes, and the perpetual legacy these lakes can potentially generate. Ideally, successful pit lake closure includes the following: (i) the water quality within the pit lake, plus surface water and groundwater discharging from the pit lake, meets pre-mining, or other acceptable water quality conditions of the receiving environment, (ii) the termination of all active treatment processes, (iii) the return of the pit lake to the government for long-term care and maintenance, (iv) the release of the mining company from all future liabilities associated with the pit lake, (v) the return the environmental bond to the mining company, and (vi) the reuse of the pit lake for some post-closure, beneficial purpose. The achievement of these goals is known as “walk away, pit lake closure.” Peer-reviewed, publications of successful walk away, pit lake closure provide mining companies the ability to address public concerns regarding the safety of pit lakes which commonly occur during the permitting, operations, and closure phases of mining. To date, most published work on walk away, pit lake closure work has occurred in the coal mining sector in Germany and Australia (McCullough et al., 2009; Jones and McCullough, 2011; Kumar et al., 2013; Schultz et al., 2013). However, in North America, examples of walk away, pit lake closure are not widely discussed in the literature despite there being excellent examples from the coal mining sector in Alberta, Canada (e.g. Pleasure Island, Black Diamond, East Pit, Sphynx, Robb, Lovette, Siltstone, and Sterling), and from the iron mining sector in Minnesota in the United States (e.g. Portsmouth Lake, see MNDNR, 2018). Although seldom included in discussions of pit lakes from the metal and coal mining sectors, the aggregate and fabricated-stone mining sectors also produce pit lakes, and there are numerous examples throughout North America where these pit lakes have been successfully closed and transformed into post-mining resources. The difficulty of finding these good examples in the literature makes it challenging for companies to respond to public and regulatory questions regarding pit lake closure and reuse. As such, there is a pressing need document the motivations and approaches used in examples of successful, walk away, pit lake closure in North America so that the mining industry at large can learn from these examples and can better address public concerns.

INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing was applied in horizontal drill- holes in the Salado salt formation near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Tests were performed approximately 650 m be- low surface to validate the design of a Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) for the disposal of radioactive waste from defense activities of the United States. Hydraulic fracturing was performed primarily to determine whether the virgin in situ stress state at the WIPP site is isotropic and whether the magnitude of the virgin in situ stresses corresponds to the weight of the overburden. Beyond these limited objectives, however, measurements are now being reviewed to evaluate the usefulness of hydraulic fracturing in salt formations in general. Such measurements are desirable to determine stresses induced by mining and to monitor time-dependent stress changes around underground excavations in salt masses. Hydraulic fracturing was chosen because it is the only technique that can be readily applied in virgin ground far from existing mine openings. The method also appeared to yield directly the magnitude of the least compressive principal stress, regardless of the mechanical properties of the rock mass. A knowledge of the least principal compression was deemed sufficient to establish the isotropic character of the virgin in situ stress field under two conditions: (1) the Salado formation was mechanically isotropic, i.e., the fracture toughness did not vary normal and parallel to bedding so as to permit preferred fracture paths, and (2) pressure measurements were combined with determinations of the orientations of hydraulic fractures and, more generally, with observations of the characteristic hydraulic fracture patterns. The latter was possible by locating the drillholes for hydraulic fracturing along the axes of drifts that were mined several months later. The success of general stress measurements by hy- draulic fracturing of salt subjected to anisotropic stress conditions was and remains less certain. While the smallest in situ compressive stresses should still be equal to instantaneous shut-in pressures, there may not exist any unique relationships between the greatest and intermediate in situ principal stresses on one hand and the primary breakdown and fracture reopening pressures on the other. This problem would be a consequence of stress relaxation due to salt creep around any drillhole in which hydraulic fracturing tests are conducted. Moreover, lab- oratory measurements suggest that creep and stress relaxation could be so rapid that it might not be possible to interpret the measurements for anisotropic stress conditions even if hydraulic fracturing were performed as soon after drilling as possible. The primary objectives of the stress measurements in the WIPP were met by combining hydraulic fracturing tests with finite element analyses of the effects of salt creep, observations of hydraulically induced fracture pat- terns, and laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests on oriented core. In situ hydraulic fracturing tests in long drillholes were preceded by several trial tests to establish the best test methods and to demonstrate that salt could be fractured. The resolution of anisotropic stresses and special problems, e.g., in the identification of instantaneous shut-in pressures, are currently being addressed in hydraulic fracturing tests in a mine pillar, in tests following different delays between drilling and fracturing, and in tests with different frac fluids. This paper will review the main results of the analyses above and of one group of hydraulic fracturing tests at different distances from existing excavations. The paper will conclude with a brief description of the geometry of the hydraulically induced fracture patterns. Because of space limitations, it will be assumed that the reader is familiar with hydraulic fracturing or will first consult other sources (e.g., Cleary, 1980; Gronseth and Detournay, 1979; Zoback and Haimson, 1983; Nemat-Nasser et al., 1983; Kim et al., 1984)

"Increasing worldwide energy demands, coupled with desires for cleaner energy, have led to greater research of renewable energies. Strongly weather-dependent energy sources, e.g. solar and wind energy, are unable to provide a constant control energy to withstand the fluctuation of the extensive power systems during peak hours. The pump storage plant Nant de Drance in Switzerland will not only have the capacity of a nuclear power plant, producing 900 MW, but will also combine the environmental aspect and the demand for controlled energy. Nant de Drance is one of the pioneer projects for upcoming energy challenges and serves as a model for future pump storage plants. This paper focuses on the planning process and the project execution of interdisciplinary large-scale projects such as Nant de Drance, including project related data handling, communication systems and project handling skills. Furthermore, the paper discusses mining excavation in the context of large scale projects and their regional environmental challenges, e.g. high alpine rock mass on the site of Nant de Drance. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project Overview Nant de Drance is a 900 MW pump storage plant located in the Swiss Alps. To provide such a high energy storage, six turbines (reversible Francis type), each with a capacity of 150 MW, were installed. Due to the efficiency factor of 80% the pump storage plant is able to provide an energy production of 2500 GWh per annum. Construction of the pump storage plant, which has been selected as “Major Tunneling Project of the Year” in 2014 by NCE and ITA-AITES, will be completed over 10 years. Therefore, the project has been divided in six major phases outlined below: - Launch: 2008 - Access Gallery: 2010 – 2012 - Excavation KMA, KTR: 2011 – 2014 - Concreting KMA, KTR: 2014 – 2016 - Installation of HEM equipment: 2014 – 2018 - Tests & entry into service: 2017 – 2018 Figure 1 outlines the single process phases of the project. For the construction of the shafts, galleries and caverns, 1.7 million m³ of metamorphic rock with sedimentary origin (mica schist & paragneiss of the massif „Aiguilles Rouges“) were excavated. A tunnel network with a total length of 15 km was created. The machine cavern measures 194 m long, 32 m wide and 52 m tall."

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. Australian miner Newcrest Mining Ltd. had exited the joint venture several years ago. Gold has always fascinated mankind. From Tutankhamen's mask to the huge nuggets that have been found in the Australian outback, gold has quickened the pulse and fevered the eye. But in recent years, governments around the western world have shown a singular lack of interest in research into gold processing, with many programs being cut. There are some notable exceptions, fortunately, and this paper summarizes a large research effort that is well supported by the Australian government and the Australian gold industry. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is an unincorporated joint venture between the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Murdoch University, Curtin University of Technology and the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy. The Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) is the Parker Centre's broker for generic R&D contracts with industry. Each of the partners makes available staff, students and equipment to further the work of the Parker Centre, and the Australian Government provides additional funding. The Parker Centre is nearly five years old and has grown spectacularly in that time. There are now about 30 full-time-equivalents of effort from 50 scientists and engineers, as well as about 40 postgraduate and honours students. The fundamentals of the key operations in hydrometallurgy are studied in three programs: leaching (which includes pretreatment by roasting etc), precipitation (or crystallisation), and surface processes (which includes solid/liquid separation, adsorption, solvent extraction, etc). A large part of the Parker Centre's R&D is directed towards gold processing technology. In Australia, a dramatic increase in gold production, from about 30 to nearly 300 tonnes per year (1977-1997), has been made possible largely as a result of a brilliant metallurgical innovation, the carbon-in-pulp process. However, falling head grades eg 2.56 to 1.84 g(Au)/t over the last 10 years, and environmental concerns, are squeezing profit margins. There is increasing pressure to reduce costs, and the Parker Centre program is focussed on providing the scientific understanding required to do this. A selection of research highlights will be given, to indicate the depth and breadth of the R&D at the Parker Centre.
