A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. The Pueblo Viejo gold/silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/tonne gold and 20 g/tonne silver at a rate of 7,250 tonnes/day. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide orebody. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians (for some time in the early sixteenth century) prior to the arrival of the Spanish and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950?s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and accordingly, the plant was designed, built and brought into production.

A combined physical/biochemical process for the precombustion removal of 13 inorganic hazardous air pollutant (HAP) precursors, i.e., Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cl, Co, F, Pb, Hg, Mn, Ni and Se, from coal was tested. Biochemical processes for removal of HAP precursors from coal potentially offer advantages of deeper cleaning, more specificity and less coal loss. The slurry column is a second-generation process for the beneficiation o f fine (60-mesh x µm coal by a combination of physical separation of mineral matter and biooxidation of pyrite. Sixty-seven percent removal of pyrite from a 60-mesh Pittsburgh #8 coal was achieved at a 35% (w/w) slurry concentration and a five-day reactor residence time. Ninety percent of the heating value of the feed coal was recovered. Among the HAP precursors of most concern, over half of the Se, As and Hg were removed from the feed coal. From 40% to 70% of most HAP precursors were removed from the feed coal. Hg in the feed coal was reduced from 0.12 to 0.054 ,µg/g in the product coal, while waste coal contained 0.24 µg/g.

The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell mine and mill at Balmertown, in the north western corner of Ontario. The mine operates at 1.3 kt/d (1,500 stpd). It produced more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold during the last three years. Changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10% to 15% increase in gravity recovery. The mill head grade at the Campbell Mill is relatively high, averaging 18.5 g/t (0.54 oz/st) over the total reserve tonnage. During the past several years, the head grade was averaging close to 20 g/t (0.6 oz/st). Before 1994, gravity concentration was achieved by using a combination of conventional mineral jigs and tables. Jig concentrates were upgraded on shaking tables to produce a concentrate, which was refined to bullion. In May 1994, management decided to buy two Knelson CD 760-mm (30-in.) concentrators. The objective was to replace the existing jigs and increase gravity gold recovery by up to 15%. Gravity recovery with jigs averaged between 30% to 35%. Gravity recovery was anticipated to increase to about 50% with the Knelsons.

A traveler driving across desolate central Nevada to the Round Mountain property can easily identify with turn- of-the-century prospectors seeking a fortune, or at least an existence, from the high desert. But now a shadow passing overhead is as likely a sophisticated fighter aircraft from Stillwater Naval Air Station as a circling bird, and the famous trails west show only as historical markers along the highway. Even the approximately 400- km (250-mile) trip southeast from Reno or northwest from Las Vegas takes hours now, not days. And the camps of Round Mountain’s early prospectors have been replaced by one of the world’s largest gold heap-leaching operations. While Round Mountain’s uniqueness begins with its scale, it doesn’t end there. Consider the mine’s low cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold, made possible by a new dedicated (not reusable) leach pad. Also, the operation’s degree of automation means that ore dropped in the south crusher system is not manually handled until it is stripped from the pads. There is the bonus of a geothermal field that is tapped to heat the leach solutions in the winter. And, of course, there was that “unexpected” hitch expected in all mining operations. For Round Mountain, it meant buying a gravity plant to process the gold nuggets discovered last summer in a fault gouge.

Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

C. Hertzler The difference of means of milling characteristics by rock and ore type is tested in a statistical manner in the paper. The null hypothesis being tested is that the sample means of two different populations are equal. It is assumed that the null hypothesis is true when performing the test. Because of this, acceptance of this hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are equal (or there is no significant difference between the sample means), not that the samples come from the same population, as the author asserts. Rejection of the null hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are not equal. A P value for this test is reported in Table 2 and is incorrectly identified as the probability that the two samples came from different populations. Actually, what was recorded was 100(1 - p) where p is the usual p-value. The usual p-value measures, on a scale of zero to one, the extent to which the data agree with the null hypothesis. It is the probability of observing a value of the test statistic (Z score) that is at least as contradictory to the null hypothesis as the one computed from the sample data (McClave and Dietrich II, 1982). The author makes no mention of the fact that were these tests to be conducted together, the chances of determining that the null hypothesis is not true when it is really true are increased considerably (Snedecor and Cochran, 1980). This is a multiple comparisons problem and should be dealt with accordingly. The usual methods involve adjusting the level of the individual tests. Table 2 reports an incorrect 100(1 - p) value in the comparison of concentrate grades for other rock types with .30 to .69 % Cu vs other rock types with .70 + % Cu; 86 % should be 98.6 %. Although the article can be criticized for poor data presentation and discussion of that data, the point the author makes regarding the use of these statistics in the ore reserve estimation process is well taken. It does not appear that inaccuracies in the statistical interpretations have hindered that usefulness. Miller After reading Ms. Hertzler's comments, it appears that the differences noted were basically semantics. If the paper is ever presented at a math symposium, some changes will be needed. When deciding the best way to present the data to mining engineers and geologists, I decided that presenting the probability that the two sample groupings came from different populations (reverse to the Null hypothesis) was easier and would require less verbage to explain. Hence, the 100(1 - p) difference which was noted. Ideally, I would have preferred to give the recovery and concentrate grades, then comment which ones had significant differences. Unfortunately, Kennecott Corp. did not grant permission to publish the ore body's actual recoveries and concentrate grades. The conclusion is that there was, as expected, a relationship between the ore's geologic properties and the metallurgical properties, and by determining this relationship, the overall mineral model was greatly improved.

ITEC Environmental Colorado has begun reprocessing the tailings from old mining sites near Boulder, CO. And if the technology behind ITEC's pilot project at Gold Hill proves successful and profitable, the company plans to launch similar reprocessing operations in other parts of the state. The pilot project is under the watchful eye of state and federal authorities. They hope the technology becomes the answer to cleaning up old mining sites throughout the West. Remining and environmental cleanup on an economic basis, then, are ITEC's hopes in one the most environmentally conscious counties in the state. Clean up the mine dump sites and recycle the land, for a profit. In June 1998, ITEC Mineral Inc., ITEC Environmental Colorado's Canadian parent, acquired the Gold [ ] Hill Mill facility in Boulder County. Included in the acquisition was 4.4 hm2 (11 acres) containing the Gold Hill Mill and 283 hm2 (700 acres) of additional properties adjacent to the facility. ITEC estimates that there are about 910 kt (1 million st) of dump rock in the area. That is enough to make the operation viable. ITEC will sell the metals recovered through its reprocessing operations. However, due to low metals prices, ITEC is not expecting to make much money on the recovery of precious and base metals. Instead, the company plans to resell the reclaimed land for residential and commercial development or open space. The Gold Hill Mill site is the first of 17 sites in Colorado that ITEC Mineral hopes to clean up and recycle the land. Most notable among the sites is the historic Central City/Black Hawk mining district, which ITEC believes holds considerable potential. The Gold Hill Mill is located 14 km (9 miles) west of the city of Boulder and less than a half mile from the small town of Gold Hill. The mill was. last operated in 1992. The operation was forced to close that year due to environmental and cash flow problems. Gold Hill is in the middle of a region with more than 32 Mt (35 million st) of mine tailings. Independent geologists have' established the average grade of the Gold Hill mine tailings to be 4.5 to 5.3 g/t (0.13 to 0.155 oz/st) of gold and 28 to 44 g/t (0.83 to 1.29 oz/st) of silver. According to these studies, the Gold Hill mine tailings are five times richer in precious metals than the tailings of the Norebec Manitou property in Canada that ITEC is also remining, reclaiming and restoring. Upon acquiring the mill, ITEC undertook a refurbishing program that included adding a second ball mill. This increased the Gold Hill Mill's capacity to 180 t/d (200 stpd). The operation employs 15 people. "The Gold Hill Mill site will demonstrate the efficiency of our integrated remining, reclaiming and restoration process," said Maxine Stewart, president of Denver, CO -based ITEC Environmental. "The abundance of similar mine sites in Colorado presents a number of opportunities to bring the benefits of the ITEC system to other communities around the state." Holly Huyck is technical advisor to the Clear Creek Watershed Advisory Group. She said: "ITEC is cleaning up an orphan mine site that otherwise would continue to contaminate the Boulder Creek watershed with acid and excess metals. This is a win-win situation: ITEC gains marketable minerals while it reclaims mined land and helps to improve the watershed."

INTRODUCTION Detailed investigation of a 60-ft-deep excavation in a mixed profile of sands and stiff clay was performed by the University of Illinois for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO). The work was coordinated through DeLeuw, Cather and Co., the General Engineering Consultant of METRO. Instrumentation was concentrated in a portion of braced excavation for the Gallery Place Station near the intersection of 7th and G Street. The early construction date, the 60 ft depth of cut, and the proximity of large buildings formed the basis for selection of this site as the focal point of observation and measurement. A history of lateral and vertical displacement is provided wherein movements which occurred during excavation to the full depth of cut and, subsequently, during station construction and the removal of braces are described in detail. Observations of preloading and the consequent brace loads and wall displacements are described. The effect of temperature change on brace loads is discussed and the measured apparent earth pressure for the 60-ft cut is provided. The paper discusses the relationship of lateral displacements of the cut wall to the construction procedure, and compares the lateral wall displacement with both lateral and vertical movement in the surrounding soil mass. Based on observed movement, the method by which displacement was predicted for a nearby 82-ft-deep excavation is described. The performance of the 82-ft-deep excavation has been summarized elsewhere (2).

The plant data were collected from three streams around a dense medium drum for coarse coal cleaning operated at various volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed. The effect of the volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed (MF) and particle sizes on the performance criteria, g50 and Ep, of the dense medium drum. These measured data were adjusted and calculated for the yields and balanced relative density distributions by mass balanced method based on the statistic principle. These balanced data were then used to formulate the mathematical models of the separation distribution curves for the various feed size intervals. The correlation equations for the g50 and Ep as the function of inverse of the feed size, and MF and total throughput were established. A numerical algorithm utilizing the Secant method, based on the root searching principle, was developed for yield optimization and simulation of dense medium drum separation to improve the separation efficiency and hence the product yield. The relationships between the direct ash content and relative density of the particles in feed and the products were established and incorporated into the numerical algorithm for predicting the product quality.

Aquatic organisms are sensitive to free cyanide (HCN) though the presence of certain metals that can form stable complexes and thereby reducing both the amount of bioavailable cyanide. Recent work has suggested that consideration of HCN rather than total cyanide can provide the basis for water quality criteria. Cyanide is often present in complex effluents that affect speciation and bioavailability. We have developed a model to predict the speciation of cyanide in complex effluents and have shown that this model can predict the toxicity of metal-cyanide complexes in terms of HCN. This study evaluated available cyanide toxicity exposures with this model to assess the role of water chemistry (e.g., metal-cyanide interactions) on the observed. Toxicity endpoints based on total cyanide ranged over several orders of magnitude for a variety of metal-cyanide mixtures. However, predicted HCN concentrations among these same tests described the observed toxicity data to within a factor of 2. Aquatic toxicity can be well described using HCN though in certain metal-cyanide mixtures toxicity was jointly described by HCN and elevated levels of bioavailable metals. This work was performed in support of an industry-sponsored reassessment (Gensemer et al 2006) of the U.S. EPA water quality criteria for cyanide (EPA 1985) using free cyanide as the basis for the re-calculation. The work presented in this manuscript presents technical support for using free cyanide as the preferred basis for this recalculation.

In-situ uranium solution mining involves the injection of a lixiviant (leach solution) through appropriately placed wells into the underground ore zone. Upon contacting the uranium minerals, this solution will dissolve the uranium. The uranium containing solution is then pumped out of the wells into a processing plant where the uranium values are removed, typically in ion exchange columns, and the stripped liquor is recycled back into the field. The lixiviants may be acidic or basic. Where the ore zone mineralization contains appreciable carbonate, as in the South Texas fields, acid consumption would be excessive and the typical solution is ammonium carbonate bicarbonate at about 5-10 g/l and a pH of 7-9. Because the usual uranium minerals, uraninite or coffinite, contain uranium in the insoluble tetravalent state, it is necessary to add an oxidant to increase the valence to the hexavalent state where the uranium is soluble. Oxygen dissolved in the lixiviant has been shown to be quite effective for this purpose. It is also much more economical than other oxidants. Of concern is the possibility that (1) its solubility may or may not provide concentration levels adequate to give an economically attractive uranium level in the extracted liquor, and (2) the addition of oxygen in excess of the saturation level so as to increase the uranium grade in the lixiviant may cause gas blockage of the typical fine-pored ore formations.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention, primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite concentrates by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid bake-leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400º C) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate happens during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase when baking at 400º C. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400º C, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.5 mL/g and two hours baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in a similar fashion.

Location The Meggen Mine and the concentrator plant of the "Sachtleben Bergbau G.m.b.H." are located in the southern part of the Ruhr-district of the Federal Republic of Germany. The mine has been in operation for more than 100 years, but the concentrator described in this paper was built in 1962 and started up in January 1963. Goelogy and Mining The Meggen ore-body is of sedimentary origin and occurs in a zone of limestones, graywacke and shales of Devonion age. The average thickness of the deposit is 3 meters and, due to an intense folding of the area, the mineralized zone dips very steeply at 800 toward the north. The ore consists of 85 percent of sulfides and 15 percent gangue that mainly contains silicates from the host rocks. The principal ore minerals are pyrite (67 percent), sphalerite (16 percent) and galena (2 percent) with minor amounts of marcasite and only traces of chalcopyrite. As shown in Fig. 1, the sphalerite and galena are very finely disseminated in the massive pyrite of the Meggen ore, and a very fine grinding combined with a special flotation technique are required to liberate the valuable sulfides and to produce separate concentrates of lead, zinc and pyrite. Mining is performed by the sub-level stoping method and employs trackless equipment. Present operations provide ore from the 600 meter level. Annual ore production is 870,000 metric tons.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

Coal Preparation Terms (General) 1.1 Coal preparation-collectively, physical and mechanical processes applied to coal to make it suitable for a particular use. 1.2 Run of mine (ROM coal)-coal produced by mining operations, before screening, crushing, or preparation. 1.3 Raw coal-coal that has received no preparation other than possibly screening or crushing. 1.4 Raw coal feed-raw coal supplied to a plant or machine, in which it undergoes some form of preparation. 1.5 Coal cleaning-the treatment of coal to lower the mineral matter content (ash). 1.6 Cleaned coal; clean coal-coal produced by a cleaning process (wet or dry). 1.7 Middlings-a product of coal preparation that, by reason of its ash content, is intermediate between coal and discard. It follows therefore that the relative density of middlings is intermediate between those of coal and discard. Middlings may be reprocessed. 1.8 True middlings; bone comparatively high ash particles so nearly homogeneous that their quality cannot readily be improved by crushing and recleaning. 1.9 False middlings; interbanded middlings-middliigs in which the particles consist of bands of coal and shale, and from which the coal may be liberated by crushing 1.10 Refuse-waste material in the raw coal which the cleaning process removes. The Black Hawk district in New Mexico hosts an unusual type of deposit: arsenide five-element veins. These deposits are Ag-Co-Ni-Bi-As-bearing carbonate veins with local concentrations of U, Pb, Zn, Sb, and other elements. They are high-grade silver deposits (1000s g/t Ag), but low tonnage (<1 Mt) and difficult to find. By 1881, claims were staked and a town developed. It is estimated that >$1,500,000 was produced in 1883–1893, when Ag prices dropped due to the 1893 Ag panic. Solid Silver Mining Co. produced $600,000 from the Black Hawk mine; one car load contained $28,000 worth of silver! The town of Black Hawk grew to 125 population by November 1883. By the end of 1893, the town was vacant; nothing remains. The district was idle until 1916, and the mines operated sporadically since because of lack of available capital, water issues, and difficulty in finding ore shoots. The area is a favorite for mineral collectors. Tungsten was found in the district in 1935 in quartz veins associated with pegmatites. Metal production from 1881–1960 is estimated as 3,000 lbs Cu, 1,000 oz Au, 1,286,000 oz Ag, and 4,000 lbs Pb. In addition, 10,542 short tons of 2.7–71% WO ore and 615 short tons of fluorspar ore have been produced from the district.

This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively
