Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and =5.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Classical acid-base accounting using modified Sobek titration methods has resulted in interpretation of results for materials with neutralization potential (NP) less than 20 tons of CaCO3/1000 tons of material (2% CaCO3) as "uncertain" due to lack of sensitivity within that content range. Standardization of a "fizzless" acid neutralization potential (ANP) method was undertaken in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International using two ranges of sulfuric acid additions based on reaction pH and carbonate carbon estimates rather than subjective fizz testing as well as hydrogen peroxide additions to correct for mineral acidity. The method is identified as the acid neutralization potential acidity (ANPA) titration method. During interlaboratory testing a positive bias was discovered within the "uncertain" range which was further investigated and resolved by increasing the test sample weight from one to five grams for samples needing improved accuracy in materials with ANP <2% CaCO3. Test results from the interlaboratory testing of the low range method is presented and compared with the results from the original ANPA method in the paper.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and stopes of varied sizes and orientations. This study investigated the interaction between underground workings and the pit slope stability, in particular for the ultimate pit depth of over 600 metres. Parametric analyses were conducted on the structural and rock mass properties in order to provide realistic input. Several cases in both 2D and pseudo 3D using UDEC were modeled and analyzed to investigate the performance of the rock mass at various mining stages. The concept of equivalent property factor was also introduced to model the 3D behavior using 2D models. Based on the modelling results, the possible failure mechanisms and deformation of the pit walls were assessed. Factors of safety have been derived for the pit slope at different mining stages using the strength reduction technique. The modelling results agree well with pit performance monitoring results to date. The concept and results presented in this paper could be a useful reference for operations with similar circumstances and stress regimes.

"The 13.2 m external diameter double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques, and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km tunnel consists of 3.4 km TBM bored tunnel, 1 km twin NATM tunnels, and cut and cover sections. The project is being delivered in a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of Independent Design Verification. Presently, the project is in its advanced stages of construction with a recent successful TBM breakthrough on August 22nd 2015. The paper presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects and provides the status of the construction. PROJECT BACKGROUND The $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Upon its completion in 2017, the project will improve connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduce congestion and save motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction, and bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region; it will ease traffic across the strait, reduce congestion, decrease pollutants and emission while maintaining the historical silhouette of the city. Figure 1 provides a general view of the project location and alignment. The overall project consists of three parts totaling 14.6km. Parts 1 and 3 consist mainly of widening existing motorways, providing connections to existing roads, reconstructing local bridges and underpasses on the European and Anatolian sides respectively. Part 2 is the tunnel crossing across the Bosphorus; it is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km long consisting of 3.4 km of 13.2m external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut and cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

The effect of microwave treatment on the surface roughness and wettability of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2 ) and on the chemical composition of its surface was studied. The microwave source was a conventional multimodal oven with frequency of 2.45 GHz and maximum power of 900 W. Pure chalcopyrite specimens and purified chalcopyrite concentrate were used in this study. Analysis using atomic force microscopy showed a decrease in the surface roughness of the chalcopyrite after microwave radiation. This decrease may be due to oxidation of the surface and formation of iron oxide. Moreover, the surface wettability of the chalcopyrite mineral increased with increasing duration of microwave radiation, which was in good agreement with the micro-flotation mass recovery results. The increased wettability of the surface may be attributed to the decreased surface roughness by microwave radiation. Analysis using scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicate that after microwave radiation, the contents of sulfur and iron increased whereas that of copper decreased on the surface of the chalcopyrite, significantly changing the average atomic number of the chalcopyrite surface.

The removal of metals from an acid mine drainage (Leviathan Mine, Alpine County, California) water by precipitate flotation was investigated. The Leviathan waters vary from about pH 4.0 to pH <2.0and contain from about 2,000 to about 12,000 ppm SO42-.The main multivalent metals present in solution are Fe, Ca, Mg, Al and Mn. Both Cu and Co are present in small amounts. The pH was adjusted with lime. The collector used was either sodium oleate or tall oil. The sodium oleate was used as a function of pH to establish optimum flotation conditions and the tall oil was used only at the optimum pH. Dow Froth 250 was used as a frother. In some test additional Cu was added to the system. Excellent recovery of Fe and Cu were achieved at optimum pH. The process achieves results comparable to precipitation and filtration without as much problems with screens blinding because of less material to filter.

Little precise information is available on the effect of mining on the surface topography. It is often assumed that after mining the surface will simply sink. This is not an infallible conclusion as is well illustrated in two of the three examples herein. This paper describes the results of an attempt to precisely measure the surface movement in the area around coal pillars left in place for three oil wells in a completely mined and caved area at the Harwick Mine of the Duquesne Light Company. The dates when the various measurements were made are shown on the data sheets and indicate the rate of surface movement. These oil wells are identified as wells Nos. 2, 3, and 6. This mine property is located on the north side of the Allegheny River at Cheswick, Pennsylvania, and extends in a northerly and westerly direction about five miles. The three well pillars are situated on the westerly side of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad some 2,000 feet from Rural Ridge, Pennsylvania (Fig, 1).

The present research work deals with the effective utilization of hematite ore containing goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite losson- ignition (LOI) phases in pellet making without deteriorating product pellet properties by optimizing the induration cycle especially drying and preheating of pellets. Adequate drying and preheating of pellets before sintering is of prime importance to sustain the desired properties of pellets. Green pellets of + 8 to − 16 mm size were prepared in a laboratory disc pelletizer and indurated by varying drying and preheating temperatures in a laboratory Raising Hearth Furnace (RHF). Produced pellets were assessed for physical and metallurgical properties. Improvement in drying and preheating temperature simultaneously helped in mitigating fired pellets’ property deterioration. Drying at 300 °C and preheating at 750 °C helped in the maximum removal of matrix LOI from the pellets before firing and enabled the production of pellets of desired properties. Laboratory scale findings successfully implemented at existing 4.2 MTPA capacity pellet plant of JSW Steel Ltd. Vijayanagar and high LOI iron ores (IOs) utilised which resulted in reduction of average monthly pellet fines generation by ~2 wt. %.

In 1989, United States mine production of barite decreased 13% while world mine production decreased by 8.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 21.2%. And imports decreased by 12.8%. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, increased 17.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported crude barite during 1989 increased from $38.10/t ($34.56 per st) in 1988 to $40.27/t($36.54 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 77% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 75% of the domestic mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the nonoilfield sector. Of the total consumption used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 80% was used in drilling fluids. The other 20% was used in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1989. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 869, 7.2% less than the average of 936 in 1988. Crude barite imports were down 12.8% from 1988. Imports accounted for 73.8% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the US. China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 63% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 27.4%, Peru 4.3%, Chile 2.9%, and Canada and Mexico, each with 1.1 %. About 97% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector.

The Sheep Creek deposit near White Sulfur Springs, Montana, is a middle Proterozoic stratabound and strataform sediment- hosted massive sulfide containing 4.5 million tonnes (5.0 million tons) averaging 2.5% copper, and 0.1% cobalt in the upper sulfide zone (USZ) and 1.8 million tonnes (2.0 million tons) averaging 6% copper in the lower sulfide zone (LSZ). Mineralization is hosted in lower Newland shales and debris flow conglomerates in the graben controlled Helena Embayment of the Belt Basin. USZ mineralization is characteristically high in Cu, Co, Ni, Ba, As, Pb, and Ag. Mineralogically it consists of barite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and tennantite with minor amounts of marcasite and various cobalt minerals. By contrast, the LSZ is higher in Cu, Ni, and Au and lower in Co, As, Pb, and Ag. Mineralogy of the LSZ consists of dolomite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. In both zones significant amounts of cobalt, nickel, arsenic and copper are incorporated in pyrite rims. Tennantite controls the abundance of numerous trace elements in the ores. Fluid incluison data from hydrothermal USZ barite suggests that mineralization took place at temperatures in excess of 250°C, under relatively oxidizing conditions (f02 = 10-32+1) from moderately saline (1.1-3.5m), metal rich brines. The absence of barite in the LSZ suggests mineralization under more reduced conditions (f02 = 10.38+2). Mineralization was initiated following basin subsidence in excess of 400m. Contemporaneous with movement along a growth fault(s) was upward migration of hot metal-bearing fluids which permeated the loosely consolidated sediments and may have vented on the sea floor. The differences in the two zones may be explained by the effects of variations in local basin morphology and solution chemistry.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Lucky Friday mine is located in Mullan, Sho-¬shone County, Idaho. The mining method is horizontal slice cut-and-fill (with timbering for support or un¬timbered) using hydraulic sand. Cemented sand fill at a 1:17 ratio is used in sill pours and at a 1:7 ratio for the final 152 mm (6 in.) capping in successive stope floor pours. Annual production with 100% cut-and-fill mining is 167 829 t (185,000 st). The average depth of mining is 1296 m (4250 ft) and the average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size The ore body is 396 to 488 m (1300 to 1600 ft) long on strike, 1421 m (4660 ft) on dip, with an average width of 2.3 m (7.5 ft). Dip varies from vertical to1.2 rad (70°) Ground Conditions, Ore Value, and Production Requirements The ore body contains quite strong argentiferous galena and quartz. The hanging wall and footwall are strongly sheared and fractured. Ore value is $211/t ($192/st).

"In July 2012 construction started on the Grosvenor project, a five million tonne per annum underground longwall mine planned for Moranbah in Central Queensland. Grosvenor is located immediately to the south of the existing Moranbah North mine which has been in operation since 1998. EPBM technology is being used for the first time in Australia for excavation of a coal drift. The TBM was used to build two drifts on the project, one for the coal conveyor which will transport to surface, and another for people and equipment to access the underground once the mine’s operational (as shown in figure 1). The TBM will pass beneath a steel archway roof that has been installed at the drift’s entrance and begin drilling into the ground to build the seven metre diameter tunnel, descending at an angle of one in eight until it reaches the depth of the coal seam approximately 160 metres below.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The first TBM used in a coal mine was in 1962, a Wohlmyer, in Westerholt, Germany. A further 75 km of tunnels were excavated in coalmines within Germany between 1971 to 1983. This paper will review the Grosvenor Mine project (Grosvenor) owned by Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (Met Coal) includes the construction of a new underground coal mine and surface facilities on the northern boundary of the town of Moranbah in the Central Queensland Bowen Basin coal precinct. The contract to undertake the underground development works was awarded to Redpath in 2012. The scope of the Grosvenor Project was to construct temporary office and workshop facilities, install 2 portal arches, backfill boxcuts and infrastructure, excavate by EPBM method 967 m of 1:6 gradient Conveyor Drift and 1,258 m of 1:8 gradient Transport Drift, development of 2,520 m of pit bottom area roadways and development of 10,550 m of the first longwall tailgate. Performance monitoring, operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in open pit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike open pit has been ongoing since the early 1980’s, with its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls. With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via pre-split blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of inter-ramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted resulting in quantified, rock specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2 degrees on a 300m high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for pre-split drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves. Location The Goldstrike open pit is located on the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada USA (Figure 1). The mine has produced over 43 million ounces (1.2M kg) of gold during the past 30 years. Engineering Geology Stratigraphy Figure 2 is a stratigraphic section of the rocks in the Goldstrike open pit. Quaternary alluvium and Miocene materials typically are poorly indurated stiff soils and are not present in all locations. Bedrock units consist of siltstones, mudstones, sandstones and cherts. From top down the major units exposed in the open pit are the Vinini Formation, the Rodeo Creek Unit, and the Popovich Formation. In general, rock mass strength increases with depth.

Since it has been demonstrated that silica caused phagocytic cells to activate lipoxygenase metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids we thought selective inhibition of this metabolic pathway might be helpful in treatment of silicosis. It is known that lipoxygenase metabolism plays a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and hypersensitivity conditions. Further, it is believed that the alveolar phagocytic cells which engulf silica begin the inflammatory cycle which produces the metabolic products, cytokines and growth factors which causes fibrosis in the lung. There have been indications that drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase can inhibit fibrosis from other causes. Previously, we developed a method which detects the activity of lipoxygenase metabolism by measuring free radical oxidation via light production or chemiluminescence (CL). We decided to apply this method to phagocytic cells that would be found in the lung in the presence of silica with and without newly developed inhibitors of the lipoxygenase reaction. We used drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase directly including AA861 (TAKEDA), A63162 (Abbott), and an inhibitor that scavenges free radicals produced from the lipoxygenase reaction, nordihydroguairetic acid. In addition we used an indirect inhibitor, tetrandrine. We found drug inhibition of silica activated CL from alveolar macrophages, neutrophils and human leukemia (HL-60) cells differentiated with DMSO. Nordihydroguairetic acid 2x10-5M produced almost complete inhibition in all three cell types. In human leukemia cells (HL-60) A63162 and tetrandrine were equally inhibitory at 42% while in human neutrophils A63162 and tetrandrine were less active 22 and 10% respectively. In macrophages A63162 and AA861 were less than 50% inhibitory to cellular CL at 2xl0-5M. Direct assay of tetrandrine (2x10-5M) with sodium arachidonate and soybean lipoxygenase reveals no inhibition. All antilipoxygenase drugs regardless of mechanism were inhibitory to cellular chemiluminescence from all three types of phagocytic cells. These drugs alone or in mixtures could prove useful in treatment of silicosis.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin&apos;s origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin&apos;s wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite&apos;s physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter&apos;s production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia&apos;s producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin&apos;s 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide&apos;s unit value is much higher, kaolin&apos;s estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute&apos;s guidelines. "The Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area, near the Afghanistan border. The deposit of SIOM is containing a geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61 %. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development (SD) is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a SD is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes SD activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators could be filtered as the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM have been analyzed. Keywords: Iran, Sustainable Mining, SIOM, Evaluation, Islamic Values INTRODUCTION Mining Industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron etc., with 37 billion tons of proven reserves and more than 57 billion tons of potential reservoirs. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5.316 active mines and 84.922 employees in the whole country in 2012-13 (2) and according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011 the share of this sector in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 per cent (3). Sangan Iron Ore Mines (SIOM) The deposit of SIOM is one of the largest iron-ore deposits in Iran, also considered to be one of the Middle East’s richest deposits, which contains a total geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61%. It is located 300 km southeast from Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, and 18 km northeast of Sangan town, in Khaf County, at latitude N34°24’, longitude E60°16’ in the north-eastern Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, 30 km west of the Afghanistan border (4) (Figure 1). SIOM is owned by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO). IMIDRO intends to develop an open pit mine complex and supporting facilities in SIOM for the production of about 20 Mtpy of iron oxide concentrate and pellets in four developing phases (5)."

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with medium-sized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in this study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.) wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.) wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.) wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1, and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.) wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods, particularly to address respirable silica dust, for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud.INTRODUCTION Surface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1% of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples) • 5.8% of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (9 out of 155 samples) • 7.3% of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (3 out of 41 samples) • 7.5% of blaster/shotfirer were overexposed to respirable silica dust (3 out of 40 samples) Of significant interest is an x-ray surveillance study recently completed under the NIOSH Enhanced Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (ECWHSP). This program offered free chest radiographs to surface coal miners in 16 states. Pneumoconiosis was found among 2.0% of the 2,328 screened miners with at least 1 year of mining tenure. Twelve miners had radiographic changes consistent with progressive massive fibrosis, and 9 of these 12 miners reported no underground mining tenure. All but 1 of the 9 miners worked at occupations that were in the vicinity of blasthole drilling, either as a driller, blaster, or blast crew member [1]."
