Zirconium chloride is of great commercial importance as starting materials for production of ZrO2, Zirconium metal and other Zirconium compounds from its main resources (Zircon Sands). The present study concerns with preparation of pure ZrO2 from Zircon by direct chlorination technique. Different parameters affecting the chlorination process are studied viz. carbon, chlorine flow rate temperature and time. The chlorination extent is determined from the loss in weight and chemical analysis of reaction products. The maximum chlorination extent -92% are achieved at 1100°C for 30 min. Zirconium oxide is produced from the collected zirconium tetrachloride either by calcination at 900°C or by hydrolysis in water in presence of RCI with a purity = 99%. Evaluations of the products of the process are investigated microscopically and by X-ray diffraction. The apparent activation energy of the chlorination of Zircon is determined to equal 36 kJ/mole.

The Umiray Angat 13,2 km long tunnel in Philippines have been bored through extremely variable and difficult ground conditions including a number of special events. In particular the following adverse conditions were found: faults in decomposed ground, high temperature rocks, extremely rapid and important convergence phenomena, water inflows up to 800 litres per second. The special El Nino climatic conditions caused a long dry season and lower the level of the lake that was granting the access by barge to the site under the minimum navigable level. Many equipment have had therefore to be transported to site by a 10 ton capacity helicopter, after having been partially dismounted. For the same reason most of the tunnel drive have been bored servicing the site by 1 ton capacity helicopters to transport materials, spares and personnel. In order to overcome the above geological and logistic problems several innovation were introduced and tested in this project. Despite all that difficulties the 13,2 km of tunnel were bored in about 24 months, with a global average of 500 m/month.

The Ciénega project, now under construction by Peñoles group, is located in the mountains of northwest Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in a 4-km (2.5mile) long system of veins. An underground operation will be built. The planned 1 kt/ d (1100 stpd) process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to the development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994. Ciénega’s ore bodies consist of quartz veins containing gold, silver, lead and zinc values. The vein thicknesses vary from 2 to 10 m (6.5 to 33 ft) with a northwest trend and nearby vertical dip. Veins are hosted in Tertiary volcanic rocks. The district has intermittently been explored since 1971 by Penoles. After the third series of diamond drilling and direct development work on vein, Peñoles decided to begin project construction.

The present work explores the reutilization of red mud, an industrial waste arising from the production of alumina, as a component of isolation technologies for hazardous substances. The work involved the study and optimisation of the geotechnical properties of red mud in conjunction with adsorption experiments of As(V) and Hg(II). The results from both types of experiments were integrated in a dispersion-diffusion model to calculate migration curves and minimum thickness of the red mud compacted layer. The geotechnical studies showed that compaction increased the stability and decreased the hydraulic conductivity of red mud barrier. Red mud sorbed high amounts of As (up to 44 mmmol kg-1) and Hg (up to 9.2 mmmol kg-1). The calculated minimum thickness of the red mud barrier was 1-10 cm for As and 2-19 cm for Hg, for an operation period of 35 years. The results obtained let to conclude that the reuse of red mud as a component of isolation systems of hazardous substances represents a viable alternative use of this residue.

The PT Freeport Indonesia‘s Deep Ore Zone(DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start in year 2000 and to ramp up to25,000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarizes the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of one of these fans. The fan was installed on the surface in a parallel arrangement with two others. It has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay. Five cross passages (CPs), spaced at 200m centre to centre, provide emergency access between the two tunnels, as shown in Figure 1.The CPs were constructed by open-face excavation methods but the particular geological conditions at the project site (loose and variable carbonate sedimentary strata with very high permeability) required specific ground treatment solutions to provide safe excavation conditions and to ensure the long term serviceability of the permanent works construction. Where access allowed, ground treatment was performed from the ground surface using deep-mixing techniques; however, at two locations (CP2 and CP3) surface access was restricted and ground treatment by freezing, performed from the tunnels, was required. The CPs are 12.3m long with an excavation diameter of 5.8m and are located up to 30m below the water table partly or wholly within the Key Largo limestone (termed Layer S7 in the ground model). Layer S7 is a coralline limestone having a metastable honeycomb structure and high variable porosity. At CP2 the upper portion of the excavation was within the overlying Anastasia Formation limestone (Layer S6), comprising a highly permeable coquina. The geological profile along the project is shown in Figure 2.This paper presents aspects of the freeze design and the risk mitigation necessary to successfully achieve the construction of the CPs in the unique geological conditions."

The Oatman District produced approximately 2.2 x 10 6 ounces of gold and 0.8 x 10 ounces of silver between 1897 and 1942. A total of 3.8 x 10 tons of ore averaging 0.58 O/T gold and 0.17 O/T silver was extracted from eight major orebodies and a number of lesser deposits. Oatman lies at the center of a trachyte-latite-rhyolite volcanic complex which contains at least one resurgent caldera. The orebodies are typical epithermal quartz-calcite + adularia lode deposits which are very deficient in sulfur. Ore deposition has occurred within dilatant zones on faults which radiate from a common point within-the complex. Fischer-Watt Mining approached the Oatman District with an integrated exploration program utilizing four basic procedures to define the characteristics of past productive areas the results of which were applied to unexplored portions of the vein system. These procedures, listed in their order of usefulness, in defining known and prospective mineralized zones are: vein contouring, detailed alteration mapping, fluid inclusion temperature determinations, and geochemical sampling.

The glass container industry is the largest producer of glass in the United States. As of this writing, there are approximately 89 active domestic production locations. In 1984, the industry shipped 11.8 million tons of glass containers. Approximately 70% of this production was clear or flint glass, 20% amber, 7% green, and the remainder miscellaneous colors. Although the production of nearly 12 million tons of glass is impressive, anyone following the industry over the last five years is aware that the industry has changed from a pattern of growth in the 1970's to one of maturity in the 1980's. Some observers, less generous, perhaps, have described the 1980's as a period of decline. In 1981, there were 119 production facilities which produced 13.2 million tons of glass the previous year. This equates to a 10% reduction in glass container production from 1980 to 1984, with a corresponding impact on the segment of the industrial minerals producers serving the container glass industry, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

One of the major improvements in ore grinding economics in North America has been the introduction of autogenous grinding. The history of this has been well documented in previous AIME presentations and in the literature. Pickands Mather & Co. has been very active in the development of autogenous grinding since 1957. This early work led to the application of autogenous grinding to the Wabush Mines ore in 1965, with the installation of 6-24 ft. diameter by 8 ft. long - 1,750 HP mills. Development work recently completed in 1971 on another ore has led to the decision to install 5-36 ft. diameter by 15 ft. long - 12,000 HP mills when this project goes ahead. Between these two decisions lies a tremendous amount of research, development, and application of autogenous grinding to a variety of ores. The Pickands Mather Metallurgical and Research Laboratory in Hibbing, Minnesota has tested, in its pilot plant facility, ores from 9 different deposits. Some of these deposits have as much difference within their own ore types as there is between the various deposits. Therefore, it is safe to say that over 20 different ore types have been tested and flowsheets developed for commercial applications. Of the 9 projects, 3 are in operation. These are Wabush Mines in Labrador, Canada, (1) Savage River Mines in Tasmania, (2) and The Griffith Mine in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. (3) Pilot plant work has encompassed over 300 individual tests. These tests were carried out in mills that were 5-1/2, 8, and 12 ft. in diameter. Grinding power requirements for the primary autogenous milling has varied from 2 to 30 KWH/Lt of crude ore.

The boron review arrived too late for the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1993. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 958 kt (1.05 million st), yielding 526 kt (580,000 st) of B203, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Estimated value was $322 million. This level of production was about 5% less than 1992 revised production figures. The United States continued to provide essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1993 was 900 people, about the same as in 1992. That was down from 1988 levels of 1250 people. Total world production of boron in 1993 was about 2.5 Mt (2.75 million st), yielding about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of B203. World production in 1993 was about equal to revised 1992 levels. Production United States In 1993, mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals. Domestic producers, in order of quantity of production, were: • US Borax and Chemical Corp., which operates an open pit kernite and tincal mine at Boron, CA, producing boric acid and borax products, • North American Chemical Co., which produces boric acid and borax products as coproducts from chemical operations at Searles Lake, CA and • American Borate Co., which produced small amounts of colemanite and shipped from inventories from its operation in Death Valley, CA.

Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

Thin films of copper [2.0 nm on germanium internal reflection elements (IREs) and 3.4 nm on germanium discs] were exposed to 10% gum arabic (aqueous solution) , 2% alginic acid (aqueous solution), 1% bacterial culture supernatant (BCS, simulated seawater solution) and 0.5% Pseudomonas atlantica exopolymer (simulated seawater solution). The IRES were monitored in situ, in real time using fourier transform infrared/cylindrical internal reflection/attenuated total reflection spectroscopy as a function of time at ambient conditions. The discs were characterized (pre- and post-exposure) by X-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies. Ancillary graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to monitor the removal process of the copper thin film from the germanium substrates. Results indicate that Cu was oxidized by gum arabic, alginic acid and BCS. Furthermore, Cu was removed from the Cu/Ge interface by all four polymers. The Cu was found associated with the polymer solutions.

Sand is one of the most common materials on the earth’s surface. It is a naturally occurring material resulting from the physical and chemical breakdown of rocks. The definition of sand varies, as do the number of products made from the material. Sand is generally classified by grain size, however the measurement or scales differ depending on the context in which it is being used. Geologist define sand as particles of rock between .05 and 2 millimeters in diameter. The variability of the mineral composition generally dictates which sand can be used for different industrial purposes. For example, sand used for Portland cement concrete and asphaltic concrete mixtures can be very different in physical and chemical composition than sand used in the making of fiberglass. In this paper, construction uses of silica sand, which consists almost entirely of the mineral quartz (SiO2), will be discussed and analyzed.

INTRODUCTION A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environ- mental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The environmental measure that reflects physiological strain is the link between the three elements and, since the turn of the century, the discussion of the merits of various indices has been prolific. One problem in selecting a suitable measure or index is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to accurately reflecting the physiological strain. For example, wet bulb temperature is simple to measure and, for a particular mining sys- tem, it may adequately represent physiological strain, however, it would not necessarily provide the same relatively safe measure in a different mining system. The acceptance of a measure which can be universally applied has been confounded by both development and predisposition. That is not to say that there is only one "correct" measure and all others are unsuitable. It is self evident that if the application of a particular index has resulted in adequate control, then that mea- sure is correct for that situation. However, an understanding of the limitations is necessary to ensure that adequate control is maintained as mining conditions change. Almost 100 years after the question of heat stress in mines started to be dealt with in a collective manner, an analysis of the available information is leading towards a general strategy to control this problem. In the paper, the developments in heat stress assessment are briefly examined and followed since the earliest published observations on the effect of heat in mines (Haldane, 1905), efforts to determine a relationship between an environmental measure and human performance are reviewed and summarised and the benefits of control strategies such as acclimatisation and shortened shifts are discussed as they relate to Mount Isa Mines. The results of testing the prototype air cooling power instrument are discussed and a heat stress control strategy outlined. HEAT STRESS AND AIR COOLING POWER The operation of the human engine is analogous to other engines where the conversion of chemical energy from the oxidation of fuel to useful mechanical energy is not 100% efficient. In a diesel engine it is about 33% and in a human engine less than 20% resulting in at least five times as much heat produced by the meta- bolic process as useful work done. Metabolic energy production is related to the rate at which oxygen is consumed and is about 340 W for each litre of oxygen per minute. Using measured oxygen consumption and an average body surface area of 2.0 m2, the approximate metabolic energy production associated with different mining tasks is (Morrison et al. 1968):- • Rest, 50 W/m2 • Light work, 75 to 125 W/m2 (machine, LHD or drill jumbo operators) • Medium work, 125 to 175 W/m2 (airleg drilling, light construction work) • Hard work, 175 to 275 W/m2 (barring down, building bulkheads and timbering) • Very hard work, over 275 W/m2 (shovelling rock) Heat balance is achieved when the rate of producing heat (the metabolic heat production rate) is equal to the rate at which the body can reject heat mainly through radiation, convection and evaporation. Heat exchange between the lungs and the air in- haled and exhaled is normally less than 5% of the total and there- fore usually ignored. Any heat not rejected to the surroundings will cause an increase in body core temperature. Since heat stress is related to the balance between the body and the surrounding thermal environment, the main parameters required to be known when determining acceptable conditions are those associated with the heat production and transfer mechanisms. These can be summarised as follows: Metabolic heat production rates (M - W) Skin surface area (A3) (and effects of clothing) Dry bulb temperature (t[ ]) Radiant temperature (t[ ]) Air velocity (V) Air pressure (P) Air vapour pressure (e [ ]) The rate of heat transfer to or from the environment depends on the equilibrium skin temperature t, and the sweat rate S,. These in turn depend on the response of the body to the imposed heat stress and the effect of thermoregulation (Stewart, 1981). Thermoregulation The body contains temperature sensitive structures which send impulses to the brain at a rate depending on the temperature. Both hot and cold signals can be differentiated and the thermoregulatory response ahivated according to which signal pre- dominates. If "cold" signals are dominant, body heat loss is re-

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. Prior to the commissioning of the Sansu Sulphide Treatment Plant (STP), Ashanti Goldfields' treatment facilities were capable of producing some 700 000 ounces of gold per annum. Ore sources were underground refractory sulphides, surface oxides and old tailings dams. In order to increase the mines production to 1 million ounces per annum and to accommodate the change in ore sources as surface mining moved into fresh sulphides, a part of the strategy adopted was -the construction of a new sulphide treatment plant with a capacity to mill 2.2 million tonnes per annum and produce 400 000 ounces of gold. The STP has been designed, built and commissioned. and has been in operation since February 1994. The Plant boasts the world's largest Bio-oxidation facility which is capable of treating 790 tonnes of sulphide concentrate per day at a grade of 11.4% sulphur and is currently undergoing an expansion to increase its capacity to 1050 tonnes per day. The following sections describe the reasons for selecting the BioX® Process, the plant design, the commissioning experience and the plant performance to date.

INTRODUCTION Today at LKAB, the primary mining method used is sublevel caving, independent of ore-body size, shape, dip, and geographical location. The mining of small ore bodies with relatively flat dip involves a lot of develop¬ment work, a large initial investment, big dilution, and large ore losses. In 1975 serious investigations into other possible methods, especially for those small ore bodies which do not lie in direct contact with other ore bodies, began. Different methods were studied and a number of in¬teresting ideas came from Russian mines. An analysis was made of one of the proposed methods, sublevel benching, in which mining is carried out from raises, and which uses the throw from the blast to place the broken ore. However, there were reservations about working in big open rooms at great depth, and doubts about the possibility of getting acceptable drilling results in an acceptable environment from raised platforms. Testing was therefore delayed for a time. However the investigations continued and in the fall of 1976, it was decided to try vein mining in a small ore body (Indian) (see Figs. 1 and 2). MINING RESULTS The results are now available from the mining of Indian and are as follows: Ore plan area 1200 m2 Level height 50 m Ore volume 60 000 m3 Ore tonnage 270 000 t Iron content 62% Dip 0.69 rad (40°) Ore thickness 14 m Ore compressive strength 26 MPa Ore C-factor (fracture density) 0.21 Hanging wall compressive strength 28 MPa Hanging wall C-factor 0.27 About 40 000 m of the holes were drilled by ring drills with an average productivity of 85 m/shift; loading of a round (2 rows, 750 m of hole) was usually accomplished in one shift. The total ore recovery was about 270 000 t with an average iron content of 59%, and three to four shifts were required per round (4700 t) to load. The principal of "throwing" the rock during blast¬ing worked well, and no ore remains on the footwall. ROCK CONTROL Before mining commenced at Indian, it was dis¬covered that the rock strength in its vicinity was rela¬tively poor. Since the ore is flatly dipping, and mining was to take place with open rooms, the strength of the hanging wall was of great importance. A supplementary program of exploration drilling was done during the fall of 1976 in order to assess fracture spacing and rock strength from the drill cores. Results showed that the strength of the hanging wall was low because of the many fractures. A decision was made to try cable bolting of the hanging wall by extending some of the ordinary blast¬holes. Cables (20 mm diam) were grouted in these larger holes and the rest of the hole was then utilized for ordinary loading (see Fig. 2). About 100 bolts altogether were installed and, to date, only small falls have occurred and the hanging wall is holding. Its exposed area is 2100 m2 DEVELOPMENT WORK On the 350-m level, four crosscuts (two per mining room), one longitudinal drift, and two elongated drifts (one per raise) for the raise climber were developed as shown in Fig. 1. Of the 230 m of drift, 60 m were in ore and the rest in waste. For mining room A alone, a total of 115 m of drift were needed with 30 m in ore. The drift dimensions were about 4.5 X 5.5 m. In the drifting on the 300-m level, two connecting drifts were driven from one existing transport drift forward to the respective raises. The total development was 93 m, all in waste (Fig. 1). The two raises having a length of 80 m each were driven at an angle of 0.68 rad (39°) from the hori¬zontal. They were driven along the footwall contact with a separation of 30 m and had an area of 10 m2. The main scope of the present study is to investigate the suitability and sensitivity of the magnetic susceptibility as a pollution monitoring tool in urban areas. For this purpose, a municipal park located in the centre of Chania city, which may be affected by traffic and domestic heating pollution, was selected as the study area. In the context of the present work, magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted in two phases. Surface soil samples were collected in 2006 from the area under investigation and they were analyzed in order to estimate the spatial distribution of the magnetic susceptibility. One year later, mapping of the magnetic susceptibility has been contacted in situ using Bartington MS2D and MS2F sensors. Additionally, soil samples were collected from selected positions in order to compare the values of the magnetic susceptibility with that estimated in 2006 research. Both investigations indicate high values of the magnetic susceptibility around the park near the roads and in a small area inside the park where a café is located.
