This paper describes the practice in diamond drilling blast holes and discusses the relative merits of this method as compared with drilling by percussion rock-drills at eastern magnetite mine A. The rooke that were drilled included: (1) Gneiss; (2) sohist; (3) crystalline limestone; and (4) granular masses of magnetite. The principal stoping methods were: (1) Sublevel open stoping and (2) inclined room-and-pillar. Diamond drilling was used in the sublevel stopes and in some of the large pillars in an old section of the mine. Experimental work on diamond drilling blast holes began in 1943. Drill- ing proved difficult owing to the occurrence of fingers of extremely hard barren rock in the magnetite ore. All diamond drilling was contracted to a firm that furnished everything necessary for drilling except compressed air and water. In most instances the diamond-drill machine is clamped directly to a 3.5-inch column to reduce vibration. For drilling in floor pillars in open stopes, the drill was set on a demountable, sectionalized steel, frame with four legs carrying a 20-foot, 3.5-inch, extra-heavy pipe. "Both coring and noncoring bits were tried. In holes drilled with a cor- ing bit, the core was ground into sludge as the bit advanced so that it was unnecessary to delay drilling for pulling core. Data on tests with several types of bits are given as well as some oper- ating results. A direct comparison of costs between diamond drilling and percussion drilling was not available. The advantages of diamond drilling blast holes at mine A included: (1) Safer working conditions in open stopes. (2) The recovery of additional ore. (3) A reduction in the amount of stops development.

Hydraulic cylinders a re used in several roof support systems, such as longwall shields and mobile roof supports, to provide critical ground control Many state-of-the-art hydraulic support systems operate at pressures as high as 7,000 psi to provide the necessary support capacities. Pressure in the upper stages of multi-stage cylinders can be intensified by a factor of 2 or 3 providing pressures of 20,000 psi or greater. A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. Likewise, the performance characteristics need to be fully understood to evaluate the impact of design parameters on the capability of the support to maintain effective ground control. This paper examines the basic operating principles of state-of-the-art hydraulic cylinders and discusses relative issues pertaining to. (1) setting loads, (2) support stiffness, (3) yielding behavior, (4) errors in assessing support loading, and (S) hydraulic failure mechanisms and how to detect them

"Using. ESR spin trapping methodology, evidence was obtained that fresh quartz dust in a cell-free aqueous medium generated hydroxyl - and possibly superoxide radicals. The hydroxyl radical generation potential decreases on storing of fresh quartz dust in ambient air and on the addition of either catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. The role of quartz related radicals in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis is suggested from these findings.IntroductionThis report summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of oxygenated radical formation by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its inihibition by radical scavengers. This study was undertaken with to elucidate the primary biochemical mechanism involved in the development of silicosis (Farber, 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). In particular the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood (Farber. 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979;). It is generally believed that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process (Farber, 1983; Parazzi et al., 1968). Thus the surface characteristics of the quartz particles have been the subject of several recent studies (Bolls et al.. 1983; Dalai et al., 1986; Fubini et al., 1987). Recently, We reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates free radicals which decay with time, and that these free radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to aged dust from the same stock (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al.. 1988). The formation of Si• and. SiO--type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, Gulumian and van Wyk (1987) have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity. However, these authors did not report the effects of metal chelators, so it was not clear as to whether the detected -OH radicals simply resulted from the Fenton reaction involving exogenous metal ion contaminants. Earlier, Marasas and Harington (1960) reported that quartz particles could function as an oxidant in a number of in vitro oxidations, including the hydroxylation of proline and lysine. They postulated that silica dusts, on reacting with water, could release H2O2 which might have the potential to react with various biological constituents and thus cause tissue damage. In fact, Gabor and coworkers (Gabor and Anca, 1974; Gabor et al., 1975) suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some 'factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radicals capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently Weitzman and Graceffa (1984) reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of • OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work indicated that lipid peroxidation may be one of the mechanism by which asbestos produces tissue injury (Weitzman and Weitberg, 1985). This is significant because • OH radicals are capable of causing peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membrane (Fong et al., 1973). In fact, the formation of oxygenated species in reactions involving quartz was suspected since Kolbanev et al. (1980) reported the detection of H2O2 in the reaction of fresh quartz particle with aqueous medium. The present work was thus undertaken to detect the anticipated formation of some oxygenated, radical species by reactions of quartz in a cell-free media and its inhibition by radical"

"INTRODUCTION The Mineral Ridge-Clay Lick fault system in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Kentucky, is one of the larger and more important fault systems of the Western Kentucky Fluorspar district. Total production from it up to July 1945 (chiefly since 1900) was approximately 80,000 tons of fluorspar ore, 10,000 tons of which came from the Mineral Ridge Fluorspar Co. tract 1, which was being operated by the Mahoning Mining Co. of Rosiclare, Ill. The fluorspar ore carries lead and zinc that can be recovered by milling, and the Mahoning Co. planned to log-wash the ore at the mine and then mill it in its mill at Rosiclare, The Mineral Ridge Fluorspar Co. properties were examined by O. M. Bishop, an engineer of the, Bureau of Mines, in August 1942. During 1943 and 1314, developments on the properties were under observation by X. B. Starnes, of the Bureau, and it was decided to diamond-drill tracts 1 and 2, as indications seemed favorable for opening up additional fluorspar ore bodies. Drilling was begun March 12, 1945, and was completed July 2, 1945, during which time 12 holed were drilled on tract 1 of the Mahoning Co.'s leases for a total of 3,637.1 feet, and one hole 359 feet deep was drilled on tract 2 of the Jennings lease. The Mineral Ridge-Clay Lick fault system, 4 to 47 feet wide, was encountered in all holes at 126 to 265 feet."

The record of fatalities from mine explosions during the past 2 fiscal years has been anything but encouraging; more men were killed by explosions (379) than were killed from the ante cause during to' preceding 6 years combined (368). The reason for the large increase in the number of explosion fatalities during the past 2 years as compared with the previous 6 years is not entirely clear. In some instances, there has been laxity in the enforcement of State mining laws; in others, both workers and operating officials is have failed to observe recognized precautionary measures to prevent explosions. In many of the explosions that lave occurred within the asst few years in mechanized mines it has been evident that speed of operation and a demand for maximum tonnage at minimum cost resulted in neglect of ordinary safety measures.

The material requirements of carbide cutting tools for machining steel and cast iron are dependent on WC bonded with Co, with additions of TaCand TiC. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to devise substi-tute materials, based on Ni-alloy-bonded TiC, for C-5-grade cutting tool applications. This substitution would result in less dependence on foreign sources for Co, Ta, and W, and use of lower cost materials. In this preliminary study, the Bureau investigated the effects of composition and processing variables on the transverse rupture strength and hardness of Ni-alloy-bonded TiC to identify compositions that exhibit promising mechanical properties. Further systematic modification of these compositions by soild-solution strengthening additions would subsequently be evaluated to obtain cutting tool materials with requisite properties and performance for C-5 applications. Compositions for evaluation were prepared by a powder metallurgy method of cold-pressing and liquid-phase sintering. Complementary analysis of compositions included chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectro-scopy, and density measurements. Based on results of this investigation, promising compositions were determined to be 59.37TiC-25Ni-5Mo-lO.63Mo2C, 59.68TiC-25Ni-3.33Mo-1.77Mo2C-6.67W-3.55WC, and 59.35TiC-25Ni-l.67Mo-3.54Mo2C-3.33W-7.1WC.

Equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous HCl and H2O over aqueous binary and ternary solutions of HCl and AICls were calculated or estimated in the range of 20° to 110° C, and up to saturation with AlC13?6H2O. The results were extended to solutions containing less than 10 wt-pct FeCl3 by assuming that FeCl3 and AIC13 are equivalent on the molar basis, since both salts have trivalent cations with a cammon anion. The ionic activity coefficient of HCl and the equilibrium constant for dissolution of gaseous HCl were also computed. This research is part of the effort by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide thermodynamic data to expand the technology base relevant to the extraction of alumina from nonbauxitic domestic raw materials.

Thermal decomposition of copper (II) sulfate (CUS04) and copper (II) oxy-sulfate (CuO?CUS04) are important steps in the overall oxidative roasting of covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S). Nonisothermal thermogravimetric techniques were used to investigate the decomposition reactions in flowing Na and air. Thermal decomposition of CUS04 and CuO?CUS04 followed "linear" kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 55±2 and 66±3 kcal per mole decomposed, respectively. These apparent activation energies comply with those previously reported when isothermal kinetic techniques were used. The addition of oxygen decreased the rate of decomposition, while small amounts of iron which were admixed with CuO?CUS04 did not have a significant effect. Neither oxygen nor iron had any appreciable effect on the apparent activation energy of the decomposition reaction.

"I. INTRODUCTIONA mechanism which is present in leukocytes and capable of releasing histamine from rabbit platelets was first described by Barbaro and Zvaitler in I966. A soluble mediator between rabbit leukocytes and platelets was also detected by Siraganian and Osier in 1971. This factor was isolated and characterized in 1971 by Benveniste et al. and named platelet activating factor i PAF). It was shown to be released from rabbit basophils through an antigen - IgE-dependent mechanism. The presence of PAF in human leukocytes' and its aggregation and releasing effects on human platelets were also demonstrated. Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group. an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon and a nonester link at the first carbon.' The structure of the mediator was found to be 1-O-alky1-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphoryl choline and it has been chemically synthesized.""' A variable portion exists in the alkyl group attached to the first carbon which can have a variety of molecular sizes such as C and C (where Cu is more abundant). Recent work by Pinckard et al."" has shown that there are at least five variations of the alkyl group.PAF has been shown to have a broad range of biological effects. Release of PAF from alveolar macrophages may be important in asthma, allergy, and shock states. In a rabbit model of antigen IgE anaphylaxsis. PAF can induce all of the effects of antigen challenge and. therefore is presumed to be a key mediator in production of anaphylaxsis. In addition to aggregating and degranulating platelets it is a potent chemoattractant."" and causes contraction of guinea pig ileum contraction of lung tissue and enhanced capillary permeability PAF has important effects in the kidney and is also known as the renal hypotensive factor proposed by Blank et al. who found the structure of PAF independently of Benveniste et al.' In producing these responses. PAF acts by a receptor-like mechanism. In platelets. PAF selectively desensitizes itself but not thrombin or collagen. In smooth muscle tissues a similar phenomenon occurs with anaphylatoxin or other stimuli.In vivo. PAF probably acts in concert with other agents in producing its various biological effects. It causes platelets to release histamine serotonin and RCS (rabbit-contractile substance formed from prostaglandins PPG2, PGH2 and TXA2) which contracts rabbit aorta. PAF can cause cells to release SRS-A and leukotriene B."

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies on four makes of Japanese automobiles, three 1981 and one 1982 model years, received from three manufacturers to determine if their materials composition would present problems to the current technology used to process junk automobiles for metal recovery. One of each make of automobile was hand-dismantled to determine the materials composition. In addition, two nearly identical automobiles of each make were shredded at a commercial operation where all metal products and rejects were collected for analysis to determine metal and nonmetal distribution. The average weight of the four automobiles to be dismantled, less batteries, tools, and fluids, was 1,938.3 lb. The weight was distributed as 1,472.9 lb. ferrous and 115.6 lb nonferrous metals, 275.2 lb combustibles, 72.3 lb noncombustibles, and 2.3 lb electrical components. The dismantled automobiles, less gas tanks, fluids, tools, wheels, tires, and batteries, which were all removed from the automobiles that were shredded, contained an average of 1,389.1 lb ferrous and 101.6 lb nonferrous metals, 305.7 lb nonmetals, and 2.3 lb electrical components. In comparison, materials collected from the shredded automobiles averaged 1,304 lb ferrous metals, 80 lb nonferrous metals, and 341 lb landfill materials. There were no materials used in the manufacture of the late model Japanese automobiles that should present handling or processing problems to the steelmaking or secondary metal recyclers.

Develop a method for recovering phosphate from a wide variety of complex western phosphate materials, including low-grade ores, tailings, and unused fines. Approach A flotation technique is used for this broad type of extraction. The method includes depression of phosphate minerals and anionic flotation of carbonate minerals, followed by cationic flotation of silicate minerals. How It Works A slurry is prepared for flotation by sizing to remove a low-grade, high-impurity slime fraction. Depending on the material, further sizing and/or grinding steps may be used to produce a size concentrate or to remove gangue. The flotation feed is conditioned with H2SiF6 and a fatty acid emulsion. The H2SiF6 is absorbed chemically to the phosphate mineral surface, making it strongly attracted to water and preventing adsorption of the fatty acid. Under these conditions, the fatty acid is a selective collector for carbonate minerals, which are removed as a froth product. Next, the silicates are floated with an amine reagent added directly to the slurry without additional pulp preparation.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy of columbium for use at high temperatures and for nuclear applications. The properties of possible alloys were determined, and the more promising ones were selected for further improvement. Criteria for selection were machinability, hardness, workability, tensile strength, and oxidation resistance. Thirteen 100-gram ingots, ranging from 100 percent columbium to 100 percent vanadium, were prepared and subjected to various tests. Also included for comparison were zirconium and the zirconium alloy, zircaloy-2. Test results showed that a columbium alloy, containing 10 atomic percent vanadium merits further development. Besides being workable at room temperature, the columbium-10 atomic percent vanadium alloy has oxidation resistance superior to the other alloys of the series and is also superior to zirconium or zircaloy-2. The latter two materials have comparable neutron-absorption cross sections. The strength and hardness values of the alloys tested were found to increase with increasing vanadium content, reaching a maximum at 50 atomic percent vanadium and decreasing with further increase in vanadium. This behavior is typical of binary alloys wherein each element will retain any proportion of the other in solid solution. INTRODUCTION There is an increasing need for alloys for service at high temperatures. Since current world reserves of columbium metal approximate 1,500,000 tons (1),4 this metal is now readily available. Columbium can ties; be considered a practical base material for high-temperature alloys required in nuclear reactors and in aircraft and space vehicles. General requirements chosen are: (1) Workability, (2) satisfactory mechanical properties at temperatures approaching 1,000° C., and (3) resistance to oxidation at such temperatures.

THE CARBONIZING properties of Chilton-bed coal from Lorado No. 5 mine, HE Logan County, W. Va., were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 600°, 700°, 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. and by expansion tests. Chemical analyses, agglutinating and plasticity tests, and low- and high-temperature assays also were included in the investigation. Blends with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at. 900° C. The Chilton coal bed lies in the Kanawha, or Upper Pottsville formation of the Pennsylvanian system; the estimated original reserves are nearly 3.2 billion tons. The bed was 39/1 to 57 inches thick in the Lorado No. 5 mine, and the coal was 38 to 57 inches thick. The carbonization sample contained 62.6 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free, basis, and the heating value on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis was 15,190 B. t. u. per pound; it therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous. It contained 1.8 percent moisture, 35.2 percent volatile matter, 57.9 percent fixed carbon, 5.1 percent ash, and 0.7 percent sulfur, as carbonized. The sulfur was largely organic, and the ash softened at 2,630° F. The agglutinating value determined on a silicon carbide-coal mixture of 15:1 was 6.8. In the Gieseler test the coal softened at 327° C., fused at 407° C., attained a maximum fluidity of 5,730 dial divisions per minute at 435° C., and solidified at 487° C. Maximum resistance in the Davis plastometer was 45.5 pound-inches.

Techniques are described for recovering about 80 pct of the cobalt and nickel contained in superalloy scrap by anodic dissolution of the scrap and simultaneous electrodeposition of a pure cobalt - nickel alloy at the cathodes in an electrolytic cell partitioned by permeable diaphragms into separate anode and cathode compartments . Superalloy scrap was alternatively prepared for subsequent anodic dissolution either by melting and casting massive scrap into suitably sized anodes , by packing moderate - sized discard scrap in inert metal baskets that subsequently served as anodes , or after concentrating the superalloy portion of grinding debris , by magnetic separation to reject corundum or other abrasives , slagging any remaining abrasives from molten grindings , and finally casting the superalloy metal into anodes . In the processing , purified electrolyte -- 1 N in NiSO4 and in NiCl₂ , and 0.1 N in CoSO4 and in CoCl2 --was charged to the cathode compartments and discharged from the anode compartments at a rate sufficient to overcome the backward migration of ionic impurities from the anodes to the cathodes . Discharged electrolyte was purified by reacting it first with SO2 and next with limestone , and then recirculated to the cathode compartments , in which a 50 pct cobalt - 50 pct nickel alloy was deposited on either blanks of stainless steel or starting sheets of cobalt - nickel alloy . The process was made self - sustaining by either adding H2SO4 to the catholyte feed to throttle the rate of cobalt - nickel deposition , thereby compensating for the slower rate of cobalt - nickel dissolution from the anode and losses occurring in electrolyte purification , or alternatively , adding H₂SO4 to

Correlations between mass spectra and molecular structures of 186 organic sulfur compounds are discussed. The olefinic ions, the alkyl ions, the CnE2n+1 ions, the m/e 61 ions, and the m/e 35 ions in the spectra of thiols are related to molecular structure. In the spectra of sulfides, the olefinic ions, the m/e 61 ions, the m/e 35 ions, the CnH2n+1S+ ions, and the CnH2n+1SH+ ions are correlated with molecular structure. For disu1fides, the correlations relate HSSF+& and RSSH+ ions to molecular structure. Base peaks of alkylthiophenes are correlated to their molecular structures. Some unimolecular reactions of sulfur compounds in the mass spectrometer are considered. A cyclic intermediate is suggested for the reaction which produces m/e 47, CH3S+, and m/e 48, CH4S+, ions in the spectra of sulfides. An expanded ring is suggested as a possible intermediate in the reactions of thiophenes. Heats of formation of sulfur-containing ions and their appearance potentials are presented in tabular form. Ionization potentials for sulfur-containing radicals and molecules are also given. Discussion of the spectra, tabulated in the appendixes, provides an insight into the relationship of the molecular structure of a compound to the mass-to-charge ratios and the intensities of the ions in its mass spectrum. Correlations of the mass spectra with molecular structures are empirically developed by observing regularities in the spectra of the reference compounds. Correlations extend the usefulness of mass spectra because they can be employed to determine the molecular structure of an unknown compound.

Laboratory flotation of synthetic coal-pyrite mixtures and high-pyritic-sulfur coal indicated that ferric chloride (FeCl3), aluminum chloride (AIC13), chromium chloride (CrCl3), and cupric sulfate (CuSO4) are potential pyrite depressants. For each metal salt there appeared to be a range of pH values and optimum concentration for selectively depressing pyrite in coal flotation. Pyrite was depressed in the pH range from 4.5 to 7.0 with ferric chloride, from 5.8 to 7.0 with aluminum chloride, from 6.4 to 7.1 with chromium chloride, and from 6.4 to 7.4 with cupric sulfate. Best separation of pyrite from coal was achieved in flotation solutions containing from 2 X 10-5 to 5 x 10-5 mole/ liter of each salt. In solutions containing excess salt concentrations, coal was also depressed. These Bureau of Mines tests demonstrated on a laboratory scale that, in solutions containing 4 X 10-5 mole/liter ferric chloride and from 1 x 10-4 to 2 x 10-4 mole/liter sodium hydroxide, the pyritic sulfur content of a Lower Freeport bed coal sample could be reduced from about 2.51 percent to less than 0.60 percent with recoveries of over 83 percent. The depression of pyrite appears to be due to the adsorption of positively charged colloidal metal hydroxide at the pyrite-solution interface. This hypothesis is supported by zeta potential determinations which showed that suspended coal and pyrite particles in solutions containing metal salts are positively charged in the pH range where depression occurs.

"INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.
