Surface mining activities disturb large tracts of land resulting in the potential for greatly increased downstream sediment loads. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 places increased emphasis on the protection of the environment from the adverse effects of surface mining operations. Surface mining activities must be planned to minimize disturbance to the hydrologic balance, erosion and sediment contributions to receiving streams. Sediment ponds must provide a sediment storage volume equal to the accumulated sediment volume from the drainage area as determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or other empirical methods established by the regulatory authority. It has thus become extremely important for the mining industry to secure more accurate estimates of potential erosion losses and sediment yield. Accurate estimates of sediment yield are required for the planning, design and successful operation of sediment control systems such as detention ponds and other alternative control structures and for evaluating the effectiveness of land management practices. The principal soil loss prediction procedure available for use is the LISLE. The USLE procedure is inadequate for use in predicting soil loss from surface mine regions for a number of reasons. These include: 1. The USLE was developed to estimate average average annual loss from agricultural soils. It cannot predict accurately soil loss for specific storm events. In surface mine regions a major portion of the soil loss occurs during the initial six months to one year of active mining. Accurate estimates of soil loss over short periods are thus required for the design of control structures. 2. "The subject of quartz occurrences in respirable coal mine dusts has been of increasing concern in recent years. The primary impetus for this concern has been provided by better measurement technology that has detected an increased number of mines with high quartz content in their respirable dusts. This paper presents the results of statistical analyses of quartz levels in multi-stage impactor samples from eighteen different coal mining sections located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and Ucah. The quartz and kaolinite determinations were then determined by combining impactor stage loadings to provide larger dust masses and applying the infrared spectrometry procedure outlined in Bureau of Mines/MSHA Method P7.The results will be presented using two categories of data collected during two separate phases of the research:(l) quartz concentration data from mines where quartz was known to be present in relatively high concentrations, and(2) quartz concentration data from mines chosen at random.The aspects of the occurrence of quartz in coal mine airborne dusts that will be reported include the size dependence of the quartz content, quartz variations with location in the mining section, and variations due to mining region. The results of the study show a strong pattern of size dependence of the quartz content in mines for which high quartz concentrations exist. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern exists in mines chosen at random. Quartz levels appear to have a varying relationship to section location and strong geographical patterns do not appear to exist in the data collected. Kaolinite content was found to be similar to that of quartz with patterns that are somewhat more consistent."

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

THE expansion of the world economy which has been in process since 1958 continued in 1963 and both production and consumption of minerals rose. Gross national product (GNP) rose sharply in the United Kingdom and Japan, continued to expand in the United States and Canada, and maintained a high though slightly declining rate of growth in the European Economic Community (EEC) despite the appearance of excess capacity in certain lines and inflationary pressures in Italy and France. The steel and motor vehicle industries both increased output in North America, Western Europe, and Japan. The less developed areas benefited substantially from an improvement in their terms of trade, and their export earnings increased some 8 percent in 1963; although estimates of GNP for the majority of them are 110t yet available, it is probable that this increase was partly reflected in a substantial rise of GNP.2 In the United States the expansion was steady and extended through all sectors of the economy producing no distortions likely to disturb its continuing growth; at yearend with unemployment still at about 5.5 percent of the labor force and operating rates of industry estimated at about 87 percent of capacity, there was a substantial margin for further expansion. Though the balance of payments was still in heavy deficit for the year, in the last half it was moving rapidly toward equalibrium as net exports rose and capital outflows declined; prices were relatively stable, inventories increased only slightly and the activity of mineral-consuming industries remained high, steel output rising by 11 percent to highest level since 1957 and the auto industry output equalling the 1955 record.3

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. The Bureau of Mines has been promoting health and safety in mining since its establishment in 1910. One area of research covers methane control in coalbeds; this report describes a multipurpose borehole used for both degasification and the production of commercial-quality gas. The multipurpose borehole was drilled into a barrier pillar, and seven horizontal degasification holes and one pressure point hole were drilled radially out from its perimeter. On January 28, 1974, after 505 days of degasification, a compressor was installed to the exhaust stack of the multipurpose borehole (2), and pipeline--quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of February 4, 1975, over 171 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company. The in situ pressure at a depth of 200 feet into the coalbed and the average gas flow and water flow from the degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psig, 1,200,000 cfd, and 6.8 gpm, respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psig. Five hundred days later, the corresponding values were 620,000 cfd, 0.15 gpm, and 10.5 psig. Daily flows have been as high as 800,000 cfd, and as low as 360,000 cfd, during the last 500 days. On February 4, 1975, after 882 days of degasification, 576 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the Pittsburgh coalbed; apparently a much larger area of virgin coal is being degasified than is defined by the holes. This study indicates that horizontal boreholes drilled into a coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove gas from the Pittsburgh coalbed.

Comparative tests of four coals used industrially for coke production have been made by three laboratories of the Federal Bureau of Mines, each using its standard equipment and procedures for evaluating coal for coking. Two of the coals were blends used in the western and eastern sections of the United States, the third was a strongly coking coal widely used for producing coke in Alabama, and the fourth was a blend typical of those used for producing foundry coke in the Birmingham district. The coals used and the cokes produced from them covered a wide range of chemical and physical properties. The tests used at all three laboratories for determining the physical properties of the cokes were made according to ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) methods. The excellent agreement found for the physical properties of the cokes indicated that, for the coals tested, the BM-AGA (Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association) 18-inch circular retort used at Pittsburgh, Pa" the 14-inch slot-type oven used at Denver, Colo., and the 17-inch slot-type oven used at Tuscaloosa, Ala., were substantially equivalent for evaluating coals for production of coke. Thus, added value is given to data obtained previously and independently at these three Bureau laboratories. INTRODUCTION Laboratory equipment to produce coke for evaluation has not been standardized by the industry. The results obtained with anyone design of equipment have been regarded as showing only the relative values of coal to produce coke of the requisite quality. Few systematic studies have been made to correlate results obtained in different types of equipment. Results of one, in which the Bureau of Mines participated, were published recently.2/ This

"The United States Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the State of Utah and the City of Salt Lake in an investigation of methods of abating the smoke nuisance in Salt Lake City. In the course of this work samples of the atmosphere have been collected and analyzed in an attempt to determine the part played by sulphur dioxide or smelter gases in polluting the air at Salt Lake City.A fairly wide-spread opinion exists in Salt Lake City that the smelters contribute appreciably to the smoke nuisance. The gases discharged from the smelter stacks are believed (1) to float over the city in a heavy blanket which prevents the smoke from rising, and (2) to unite with the water vapor in the air to form corrosive fogs injurious to health and property.The first of these theories seems untenable. If the gas did not mix with air it would sink, owing to its heavier specific gravity, and form a blanket an the earth. Actually, the gas diffuses rapidly in air and any part reaching Salt Take must he thoroughly diluted. Perhaps sulphur dioxide in sufficient concentration might aid in fog formation. The more obvious nuisance, however, would be the injury to health and vegetation.The Garfield smelter is 16 miles west of the city, The Murray smelter 8 miles south, and the Midvale smelter 12 miles south. Under normal operating conditions, a relatively small amount of solid matter is discharged from these stacks. The toxic gaseous constituent of the discharge is sulphur dioxide, it is being discharged from the smelters the year round. If they are a factor in the city's smoke problem, the concentration of this gas in the air of the city should be appreciable and should increase toward the smelters, the con centration being highest with a south or a west wind."

"It is generally agreed that dust characteristics play a role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of information on what the characteristics of mine dust actually are and how they vary among different mining regions, coal seams, etc. This paucity of data can generally be attributed to the serious problems encountered in collecting sufficiently large quantities of dust for conventional analytical procedures.Personal samplers are widely used in coal mines for regulatory and enforcement purposes. Generally, these provide information only on the total (respirable) dust loading in the mine atmosphere and on the mineral matter (primarily quartz) content of the respirable dust. A procedure has been developed by which samples collected with a slightly modified personal sampler can be analyzed for particle size distribution, total mineral matter content and elemental composition, in addition to the standard mass and quartz measurements. These analyses could readily be performed on a routine basis. Shape analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) could easily be included if appropriate shape criteria are established. Extension of the procedure to include the determination of complete size/specific gravity (composition) distributions is quite straightforward provided sufficiently large samples (at least 10 mg) can be collected. Typical sample sizes for a personal sampler carried by a miner for one shift range from about 0.5 to 2 mg.The basic procedure was developed and evaluated using synthetic mine dust prepared in the laboratory. Field tests in three working mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have confirmed the applicability of the approach to the real world. Particle size distribution measurements on mine dust collected in the modified personal sampler were found to agree closely with the results of simultaneous in situ measurements obtained using cascade impactors."

The Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of lines has recently developed an improved method for the determination of water in pctroleum emulsions. It has been described in detail in an article entitled "A convenient method for the determination of water in petroloum and other organic emulsions" by E. W. Dean and D. D. Stark (Jour. Ind., and Enc. Chem. Vol. 12, ſay, 1920, page 436). It is essentially a modification of the familiar procedure of "distillation with an iniscible solvent", the improvement consisting in the use of apparatus that is rºck more convenient than any previously employed. The method has been used with marked success in the Bureau's laboratories for a period of about a year and has also been tried with equal satisfaction by a number of other laboratories. It has been most extensively employed for determining the water content of heavy fuel oils but has been applied also to several other types of emulsions, including shale oils, tars derived from coal, greases, and mixtures of powdered coal, oil and water. The Bureau has received a number of requests for information regarding commercial sources for the apparatus used, and having been assured of the value of the method, has taken steps to render it available for general use. - The equipment is, with the exception of two items, made of parts that are obtainable from the ordinary stock of chemical supply houses. The two exceptions are (1) the so-called "distilling tube receiver" and (2) the electric heater. The former is an essential part of the equipment; the latter is a convenient ac cessory but it can if necessary be roplaced by a gas burner. Efforts on the part of the Bureau staff to ronder these two items of apparatus available for purchase from supply houses, or for production by the user are hero described.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. Each rule that is given is proposed as necessary or helpful to the accomplishment of one or more of these measures. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED Alive.-See definition of " live." Table 10 and figure 4 show the number of fires and fire injuries occurring at the surface of underground coal mines by state during 199&1999. Table 10 also shows by state the risk rate, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 65 fires occurred in 10 states. Thirteen of those fires caused 12 injuries and 1 fatality (the yearly average was 6.5 fires and 1.2 injuries). Four fues and one fire injury involved con- tractors. The Ewhr value was 97 x l O6 hr (Irr = 0.025); the LWD value was 6,206. Pennsylvania had the most fues (20 fues and 5 injuries), followed by West Virginia (1 6 fires and 1 fatality) and Kentucky (1 5 fires and 3 injuries). Among these states, Pennsylvania had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr - 0.095). Table 1 1, partly illustrated in figure 5, shows by time period the number of fires, fire injuries, and fire fatalities; risk rates; employees' working hours; and lost workdays. The number of fires and fire injuries show a decrease followed by an increase during the five time periods, accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours throughout the periods (see table 11 and figure 5). The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 12- 17 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 6 shows the major variables during 199&1999. Table 18 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

The value of protective clothing in the prevention of injuries has long been recognized in many of the leading industries , but the adoption of the idea into mine safety programs is comparatively new . Once started , however , the idea has grown rapidly and the results already obtained by mining companies have shown that it is fundamentally sound . Both coal and metal mining companies are rapidly adopting these protective measures , and since 1924 many mines have become well equipped with eye , head , and foot protection . At the present time approximately 70 percent of the employees in the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are provided with safety hats . At many metal mines all employees are provided with safety hats, shoes , and goggles . The Pennsylvania mining law provides that all shaft · workers in anthracite mines shall wear protective hats . In According to a study³ made of the nature of 3,485 temporary injuries and of the parts of the body of underground coal mine employees most exposed to occupational hazards , the head and face were injured 665 times , the hands 856 times , and the feet 565 times . Of 2,555 temporary injuries in metal mines , the head and face received 484 , the hands 788 , and the feet 357 . a similar study4 made by a coal -mining company for the year 1928 , of 556 injuries the scalp received 9 , the skull. 4 , the eyes 47 , the hands 62 , the thumbs 21 , the fingers 141 , the ankle , the feet 51 , and the toes 35 . "Kuhn, Douglas C., and Laurence M. Demers. Effect of surfactant on basal and silica-induced eicosanoid production by the alveolar macrophage. Am. J . Physiol. 269 (Lung Cell. Mol. Physiol. 13): L165-Ll 70, 1995.-Infiammation and fibrosis subsequent to the inhalation of certain mineral dust particles has been suggested to result from the activation of eicosanoid synthesis by the alveolar macrophage (AM). To determine if surfactant modifies dust-induced generation of eicosanoids by the AM, we evaluated the effect of the surfactant lipid dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) on the production of eicosanoids by rat AM exposed to respirable silica dust in vitro. During the first 24-h exposure period, DPL alone significantly increased basal production of eicosanoids but completely inhibited silica-induced thromboxane A2 synthesis. In contrast, leukotriene B4 (LTB4 ) production was only partially reduced by DPL. During a second 24-h exposure period, LTB4 production in response to the highest dose of silica remained significantly elevated in the presence of DPL. Similar results were obtained when the surfactant preparation Survanta was evaluated. These results suggest that 1 ) DPL and Survanta independently activate AM eicosanoid production, 2) DPL and Survanta modulate the response of the AM to silica dust, and 3) L TB4 may be the most important eicosanoid mediator of the long-term effects of silica dust exposure on lung pathophysiology. THE OXYGENATED METABOLITES of arachidonic acid (AA) (here collectively termed eicosanoids) have been implicated as important regulators of lung physiology and are thought to be involved in pathophysiological sequelae such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, and the pulmonary complications of sepsis (20). This role is manifested through both direct effects on lung physiology as well as through an indirect modulatory effect on the release of other mediators of lung injury, in particular profibrotic cytokines such as the interleukins and tumor necrosis factor (15). Recently, exaggerated eicosanoid production by both the alveolar macrophage (AM) and the type II epithelial cell has been demonstrated to result from the exposure of these cells to several particulates, including crystalline silica (quartz) dust (5, 9, 17). These observations have led to the suggestion that eicosanoids play a major role in the etiology of pneumoconioses.Another secretory component of the pulmonary environment, surfactant, has been shown to modulate crucial AM functions, such as bactericidal activity and the recruitment of circulating immune cells (25). Indeed, an important feature of the lung's reaction to inhaled mineral dust is an increase in surfactant production, perhaps as a compensatory or protective response (1, 16). In addition, the alteration of the surface properties of mineral dust by surfactant or its components has been shown to influence the biochemical response of the AM to the dust, perhaps by altering the surface charge of the dust particle (11, 29, 32). And recently, Wallace et al. (28) have shown that the coating of mineral dust with surfactant, and its subsequent removal by lysosomal phospholipase, unmasks differences in dust cytotoxicity that are not apparent when AM are exposed to uncoated dust. Thus it appears that the inclusion of surfactant in in vitro exposure studies may be important in evaluating both the absolute levels of eicosanoid production by the normal and dust-exposed AM and the temporal relationship between dust exposure and the production of inflammatory mediators by the AM. Therefore, we characterized the effects of the surfactants dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL; the primary lipid component of natural surfactant) and Survanta (a commercially available surfactant derived from bovine lung) on basal and silica-induced AM eicosanoid production during two 24-h periods after exposure to dust particles to both allow the enzymatic removal of surfactant from the particle surface and evaluate the k"

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. This report describes a process for quickly developing information that is useful for skills training. The process is called job training analysis (JTA). Its main use is to structure skills training at the jobsite. JTA supports structured skills training by identifying the job duties, tasks, and steps and the reasons why those job components are important. The outcome of the JTA process is a worksheet—a training outline based on the knowledge and expertise of experienced workers. Time invested in developing a JTA will result in significantly more time saved when it is used appropriately by skilled trainers. Like a roadmap, JTA saves time and energy. Experimental work at several mine sites helped document, refine, and validate the JTA process. JTAs for two mining jobs—roof bolting and lift truck operation—at two different mine sites are used to illustrate some of the concepts and the specific JTA process described in this report. The work at these two sites was influenced by cooperative work between the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at several other mine sites and prior collaborative work with the U.S. Navy. The mining JTA process is grounded within the military research on the design of instructional systems. MSHA and NIOSH worked to simplify and apply the military training development model for mining industry use through collaborative work at several mine sites. The JTA process involves three activities: (1) planning, (2) a 1- to 3-day workshop where the JTA is developed using facilitated work with subject-matter experts, and (3) followup. Guidelines and considerations for each of these activities are included. Results indicate that the JTA process has been well received and valued by mining industry participants. It blends aspects of health and safety, production, maintenance, and crew coordination.

[A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and, discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low frequency rate from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, cross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat and the block systems are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some good may accrue to many other bituminous mines which 'nave similar natural conditions.]

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. Thallium is one of the rare and relatively neglected elements that has recently assumed conspicuous importance. This element is widely distributed in nature but occurs in such minute quantities in most rocks and minerals that its recovery at present is only commercially feasible as a byproduct of other industries. World War II, with its unprecedented demand for products having special or unusual properties, led to a study of a number of the rarer elements that previously had been given comparatively little attention for one or more of the following reasons: 1. 2. Limited knowledge of properties. Small quantitios present in available raw materials. 3. High cost of concentration and recovery. Some of those rare elements, either alone or in the form of compounds, have already proved of such value for certain military and industrial purposes that their extraction from ores and waste products, oven at high cost, is fully justified. On the othor hand, further investigation of their character- istics, discovery of more adequato sources, and improvement in methods of con- centration and recovery would greatly broaden their field of usefulness and establish new and expanded industries. The current market for some of these elements exceeds the available supply. One of the functions of the Bureau of Mines is to study the properties of such elements in greater detail, locate the most promising raw materials from which they can be derived, and work out methods of extraction that will render the recovery of such elements more economical. The purpose of a serios of information circulars on the raror elements is to present in condensed form the facts and data so far available. This information may serve as a basis in planning more complete investigations loading to a full utilization of such elements.
