Improve the dust control effectiveness of dry collection systems on surface coal mine drills. Approach Use a dust pelletizer to convert the respirable dust particles discharged by the dry collector into dust pellets that present no health hazard. Background Blasthole drills are well-known sources of respirable dust that can contain significant amounts of quartz. The drills frequently use a dry cyclone-filter type collector that can obtain dust reductions theoretically greater than 95 pct. However, surface mine drills using dry collectors typically have three major dust sources that significantly reduce the overall effectiveness of the collection system: (1) the dust collector dump cycle, (2) drill shroud leakage, and (3) leakage around the drill stem seal in the drill table.

To determine the effectiveness of multiple types of fire sensors for early and reliable mine fire detection. Background The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the effectiveness of multiple types of fire sensors for early mine fire detection and nuisance signal discrimination. Reliable early fire detection in underground mine can be hindered by false fire alarms produced by carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke particulate emissions from diesel equipment, welding, and metal-burning activities. Another false fire alarm source is the cross-interference of hydrogen (H2) produced by battery-charging operations with a CO sensor's chemical cell. Workers can learn to ignore repetitious "false" alarms associated with these emissions. This jeopardizes their safety in the event of a mine fire.

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. "INTRODUCTIONPlatelet-activating factor (P AF) has been shown to mediate a broad range of biologic activities (1). Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group, an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon of the glycerol backbone, and an ether linkage at the first carbon. The alkyl group attached to the first carbon can exist in a variety of chain lengths, with the C16 and C18 forms predominant in humans. The structure of P AF has been identified as 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine (2,3).PAF can be released from a variety of cell types, such as basophils, neutrophils, and alveolar macrophages ( 4-6). Stimuli for the release of P AF include calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and zymosan. In addition, endotoxin has been shown to be a potent stimulant of P AF release from alveolar macrophages (7).P AF has been shown to have a number of pulmonary effects. It has been associated with asthma since it can cause contraction of pulmonary tissue (8) and leukotriene secretion from leukocytes (9) and induce airway constriction when inhaled by humans (10). In addition, PAF is a potent chemoattractant and can cause migration ofneutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (11,12). Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide-protein complex derived from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. I.PS is the lipopolysaccharide portion of endotoxin. LPS contains four covalently joined subunits: lipid A, 3-deoxyoctonate, a core polysaccharide moiety, and an 0-specific antigenic polysaccharide side chain. Rough LPS contains no 0-antigen side chain. The liP.id A portion of LPS has been associated with most of the biolQgic effects of endotoxin (13). This lipid A subunit consists of a D-glucosamine disaccharide backbone substituted with four fatty acid side chains. Endotoxin is found in a wide variety of occupational settings associated with organic dusts derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, cereal grains, silage, rice, and poultry (14-18). In addition, airborne endotoxin has been found in sewage treatment plants, composting plants, offices with contaminated humidifiers, and showers or saunas (19-22)."

The purposes of the research were to assess the applicability of new accident investigation methods to mining accidents, and to adapt those found to be applicable in the development of a new methodology for use in mining. The development included field testing, evaluation and modification of the new methodology. The report is in two volumes. Volume one discusses the background research, the design of a methodology for field evaluation, preliminary field tests in Utah mines, and work done to prepare for a formal, complete evaluation by federal government mine safety officials. This, volume 2, discusses the field evaluation done by the contractor and cooperating mines after the program was re-directed by the Bureau of Mines. It relates to research done during a period of approximately eighteen months, ending in April, 1983.

This final report summarizes the prototype development and testing of an air curtain respirotory protective device under Bureau of Mines Contract HO122087. The air curtain respiratory protective device, as part of a miner?s hat, provides protection for the underground mining machine operator against inhalation of dangerous amounts of respirable coal dust. Major components of the air curtain respiratory protective device are: 1) a modified miner hat incorporating an air curtain jet manifold from which the protective air curtain emanates, 2) a motor blower which supplies the air for the air curtain, 3) a filter element to remove the particulate material from the air used for the air curtain, and 4) the hoses and coupling used to duct the filtered air from the motor blower to the modified miner's hat.

Laboratory tests were made to determine if aluminum fluoride of commercial grade could be synthesized by reacting alumina hydrate with dilute ( 25 to 75 grams per liter of fluorine ) aqueous fluoride solutions . • Products containing up to 90 percent aluminum fluoride ( A1F ) were synthesized by reaction of alumina trihydrate ( A120 3H2O) with either dilute hydrofluoric acid ( HF ) or ammonium fluoride ( NHF) solutions , the ammonium fluoride solution resulting from ammonia ( NH ) desilication of a hydrofluoricfluosilicic acid ( HF - H₂ SiF ) solution . Fluorine recoveries of over 80 percent were obtained with either type of solution . The hydrated precipitates of AlF, and ( NH4 ) , A1F ( ammonium aluminum fluoride ) obtained by reacting hydrated alumina with these solutions were subsequently converted to anhydrous AlF, by controlled heating .

This publication presents original thermal data for a typical variety of perlite and supplies basic information for use in computing energy requirements in processes for expanding perlite. Perlite has been defined by Raiston 4/ as any silicious lava containing dissolved water in sufficient amount to errand into bubbles when the material is quickly heated to a suitable point in the softening range." The uses of expanded perlite in) the construction and ceramic industries have been discussed by Ralston 4/ and King. 5/ The work described here had a dual purpose: (1) It was desired to ascertain quantitatively, using a typical variety of perlite, just how firmly the contained water is held, and (2) it was desired to obtain basic thermal data sufficient for energy-requirement calculations in processes for expanding perlite.

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916,1 and an investigation of Illinois coal-washing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coal. OBJECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION The present investigation was limited to a study of screening as applied in preparing mineral products with the expectation of obtaining more comprehensive information on screening machinery.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50.

The purpose of this investigation was to find whether the moduli of elasticity obtained were the same for the following methods : ( 1 ) Deformation of a borehole in a prism subjected to uniaxial stress ; ( 2 ) deflection of a thin beam of uniform cross section uniformly loaded ; ( 3 ) sonic - pulse velocity measurements , and ( 4 ) strain measurements on a prism under uniaxial stress . The rock tested was chosen for its good elastic behavior and relatively good homogeneity and elastic isotropism . The same rock was used for all methods . Results indicate that for given environmental and stress conditions the moduli obtained by each of the four methods check one another within the limits of experimental error and that the differences introduced which are characteristic for each method are smaller than physical variations within the rock tested .

An aluminizing dross which is accumulating as a waste material in substantial quantities was tested for possible use as a steel deoxidizer. This material, consisting mainly of aluminum, silicon, and iron, was used to deoxidize laboratory-scale melts ranging from 7 to 100 pounds. Oxygen analysis showed that the aluminizing dross was effective in reducing oxygen levels in steel. A direct comparison with aluminum wire showed the dross material to be at least as effective. Under similar test conditions with 7-pound melts, 3 grams of aluminum reduced the oxygen concentration from 210 to 175 ppm, while 4 grams of aluminizing dross (equivalent to approximately 2 grams aluminum) reduced the oxygen concentration from 250 to 170 ppm. An additional 4 grams of aluminizing dross produced a final oxygen concentration of 140 ppm.

The bauxite diagram presented as figure 1 was developed to clarify, by graphic means, the theoretical chemical constituents of gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite for all possible proportions of these two minerals from pure gibbsite to pure kaolinite. The tables in the report reflect the same date. The diagram provides (1) a graphic representation of the relations of constituents with respect to a ill possible percentages of alumina and silica, (2) a basis for verifying the accuracy of analyses of gibbsite-kaolinite bauxite, and (3) a basis for estimating the type and proportion of alumina hydrate and/or silicate minerals that may be present in gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite. The diagram, with accompanying interpretations and use formulas, will be useful to those connected with the mining and processing of bauxite.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1992 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, the continent's total output for a number of major mineral commodities declined relative to the volume produced during 1991. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines in mineral production from 1991 to 1992 were for cobalt and copper (declines of 28.6 % and 23.4 %, respectively), which could be partially attributed to mining and metal processing difficulties caused by political and economic disruptions in Zaire and for uranium (12 % drop), for which much of the continental production decline was ascribed to Namibian cutbacks in response to lower world prices. The severe regional drought also adversely affected the mineral industry in a number of sub-Saharan nations.

This report present the results of a laboratory and field research program aimed at design and development of a torque-thrust controlled bolter with the capability to (1) predict the "quality of anchorage" attained while installing mechanical anchor roofbolts, and (2) improve the uniformity and tension levels achieved among a group of roofbolts. The prediction accuracy of the anchorage quality algorithm ranged from low to moderate because of the complexity and variability of the phenomena involved. The best roof support with mechanical anchor bolts was found to be achieved by simply installing them under ? proper torque-thrust control, and with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead. This procedure resulted in an improvement in uniformity of 3 times, along with an increase in mean tension levels of 75% over conventionally installed roofbolts.

This report covers the investigation of the MacArthur copper deposit and several adjacent claims in the Mason mining district; Lyon County, Nev. (fig. 1). As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was begun first on the MacArthur claims. Work was done later on some adjacent claims in the immediate area, as shown by figure 2. Field work was begun by the Bureau of Mines on January 16, 1950, and completed on October 25, 1950. Eight diamond-drill holes were completed, for an aggregate of 3,414 linear feet, Analyses were made of' each drilling interval. The report includes a brief history of the district and a description of the deposits and of the work done by the Bureau of Mines.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews the first 2 years of the agency's progress in implementing total quality management (TQM), which the agency refers to as Quality Improvement (QI). All employees have been trained in basic TQM concepts, a cadre of facilitators has been selected and trained, and 13 Bureauwide teams are addressing specific issues that were identified by Bureau employees nationwide as problem areas. Also in place are a Quality Council composed of the Bureau's top executives, a Quality Management Board, and eight QI Working Groups to provide a national 01 infrastructure. There are also Quality Steering Groups at each Bureau location nationwide to address local concerns. In addition to the narrative text, the texts of salient memoranda and other documents are included as appendixes.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests on samples of two Florida phosphate slimes t6 devise a technique to recover phosphate currently dis-carded because of its fine size. A flotation technique was devised to recover the phosphate contained in two fractions of each slime: the plus 37um fraction and the plus 20-um fraction. The technique involved conditioning the flotation feed with sodium silicate and a fatty acid-fuel oil emulsion, floating a rougher phosphate concentrate, and cleaning the concentrate in two cleaner stages with sodium silicate added to each for gangue depression. Concentrates containing 21.0 to 32.3 pct P20S were produced with recoveries of 68.1 to 84.2 pct of the P20S con-tained in the flotation feed.

This report on methods employed for dehydrating oil-field emulsions, is the second of a series prepared as a result of a study of oil-field emulsions recently completed by the writer. The first paper2 dealt with the factors responsible for the formation of emulsions. A third paper will discuss the physical chemistry involved in the formation and resolution of such emulsions. In the early development of the oil fields of Pennsylvania, no emulsion troubles of any consequence were encountered, nor to any serious extent in the oil fields of other Eastern States: However, with the development of fields west of the Mississippi in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and California, where heavier oils of different characteristics were found, the problem of dealing with cut oil soon became of great importance.

In Europe, water infusion is used widely to reduce generation of respirable dust during mining. Its use in the United States is limited to a few plow operations in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed. This Bureau of Mines report describes the technology for infusing water in to a longwall panel and reports the results of a recent demonstration in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed that achieved dust reductions averaging 58 pct. Because water infusion increases moisture content of the coalbed, face air velocities in excess of 500 ft/min (2.5 m/s) are possible, further diluting dust levels before dust entrainment occurs. An economic analysis shows a 23-pct reduction in operating costs when coal production is increased by changing from unidirectional mining to bidirectional mining with water infusion.
